Chapter 10 — The Father's Deal

Chapter 10 — The Father's Deal

Mary opened her eyes.

The hand covering her mouth disappeared.

The room was still dark.

She could hear Daniel breathing somewhere behind her.

Vanessa was crying.

Then the emergency lights flickered on.

Mary turned.

Elena stood three feet away.

Older than the woman in Mary's childhood photographs.

Thinner.

Paler.

But unmistakably her mother.

Mary's lips trembled.

“Mom.”

Elena stared at her.

For one second, neither moved.

Then Mary crossed the room and slapped her.

The sound echoed through the underground chamber.

Elena didn't react.

Mary's eyes filled with tears.

“You're alive.”

“Yes.”

“You watched me grow up believing you were dead.”

“Yes.”

“You watched me get engaged to Ethan.”

“Yes.”

“You let me walk into that hotel room without warning me.”

Elena lowered her eyes.

“I couldn't.”

Mary laughed through her tears.

“You couldn't?”

“I was being watched.”

“So was I!”

Mary's voice broke.

“You left me alone.”

Elena finally looked at her.

“I left you alive.”

Mary froze.

“What?”

Elena stepped closer.

“If I had returned to you eight years ago, you would have died.”

“Who would have killed me?”

Elena didn't answer.

Mary looked toward Daniel.

“Richard?”

“No.”

“Ethan?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Elena's expression became grim.

“Your father.”

Silence.

Mary stared at her.

“My father?”

“Yes.”

“You're lying.”

“I wish I were.”

Mary shook her head.

“My father tried to protect me.”

“He made a deal.”

“What deal?”

Elena looked at the blue file.

“The deal that destroyed our family.”

The Deal

Eight years earlier, James Carter had discovered that Richard was stealing billions from Blackstone.

But Richard wasn't working alone.

He had built a network inside the company.

Lawyers.

Bankers.

Government officials.

Security contractors.

Anyone who could erase a document or make a person disappear.

Elena discovered the network first.

She wanted to expose them.

James wanted to negotiate.

“He believed he could control Richard,” Elena said.

“He was wrong.”

Mary listened without speaking.

Elena continued.

“Richard offered him a deal.”

“What kind?”

“Your father would surrender control of certain assets.”

“In exchange for?”

“Your life.”

Mary's face went pale.

“My life?”

“Yes.”

Richard knew Elena would never surrender.

So he threatened Mary.

She was only nineteen.

Young.

Trusting.

And completely unaware of the war happening around her.

“Your father agreed,” Elena said.

Mary whispered:

“What did he give Richard?”

“Everything Richard needed to take control of Blackstone.”

“And my mother?”

“He gave Richard my location.”

Mary's heart stopped.

“He sold you?”

“No.”

Elena's voice trembled.

“He thought he was saving me.”

Mary stared.

“But you disappeared.”

“Yes.”

“Because of him.”

“Yes.”

“And the accident?”

Elena looked away.

“That came later.”

Mary's voice became colder.

“Who caused it?”

Elena didn't answer.

Mary stepped forward.

“Mom.”

Elena finally said:

“Richard.”

Mary closed her eyes.

“Then why did Dad say he didn't know?”

“Because he didn't.”

“What?”

“Your father knew Richard planned something.”

“But he didn't know what.”

Elena nodded.

“By the time he realized, it was too late.”

The Price of Silence

Mary looked at the blue file.

“What did my father agree to?”

Elena pointed toward the documents.

“Look at page forty-seven.”

Mary opened the file.

There was an old contract.

The paper was yellowed.

The signatures were unmistakable.

James Carter.

Richard Hale.

Mary read the first paragraph.

Then the second.

Her breathing became shallow.

The agreement transferred a controlling block of Blackstone shares to a trust.

The beneficiary wasn't Richard.

It wasn't Ethan.

It wasn't even Elena.

It was Mary.

Mary looked confused.

“Why would Dad transfer shares to me?”

Elena answered:

“Because he knew Richard would eventually come for them.”

Mary turned another page.

There was a condition.

The trust shall remain protected until Mary Carter reaches the age of twenty-five or enters a legal marriage.

Mary froze.

“Marriage.”

“Yes.”

“If I married Ethan…”

“The protection disappeared.”

Mary stared at the contract.

“So the wedding…”

“Wasn't a wedding.”

Elena's eyes hardened.

“It was the final step in Richard's takeover.”

Mary's hands trembled.

“He needed me to marry Ethan.”

“Yes.”

“And Dad knew.”

“Yes.”

Mary looked at her mother.

“Then why didn't he stop it?”

“He tried.”

“How?”

“By paying Vanessa.”

Mary understood.

Her father had secretly paid Vanessa to expose Ethan.

He hadn't been helping Richard.

He had been trying to destroy the wedding from inside.

But there was another question.

Mary looked at Elena.

“Why didn't you tell him to come to me?”

“I couldn't contact him.”

“Why?”

“Because someone was monitoring him.”

“Who?”

Elena looked at Daniel.

Mary followed her gaze.

Daniel stood motionless.

Daniel's Secret

Mary turned toward him.

“What does he have to do with this?”

Elena said nothing.

Daniel looked at her.

“Tell her.”

Elena shook her head.

“You tell her.”

Daniel swallowed.

Mary stepped closer.

“Tell me what?”

Daniel looked at the floor.

“Three years ago, I was involved in an operation against Richard.”

“You said it was revenge.”

“It was.”

“But you weren't alone.”

“No.”

“Who was with you?”

Daniel looked at Elena.

“Your mother.”

Mary stared.

Daniel continued.

“She found me after my father's death.”

“She knew you?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because she had been watching my family for years.”

Mary's eyes narrowed.

“Why?”

Daniel's voice became quieter.

“Because my father was part of the original Blackstone group.”

“And?”

“He knew about Project Orchid.”

Mary looked at Elena.

“What is Project Orchid really?”

Elena didn't answer.

Daniel did.

“It was a contingency plan.”

“For what?”

“If the Carter family was destroyed.”

Mary frowned.

“Destroyed?”

Daniel nodded.

“Your mother created new identities for everyone who might be targeted.”

Mary's eyes widened.

“That's why the records are fake.”

“Yes.”

“That's why the DNA reports contradict each other.”

“Yes.”

“That's why Ethan's identity doesn't match.”

Daniel hesitated.

“Partly.”

Mary noticed.

“Partly?”

Daniel looked away.

“There was another reason.”

“What?”

“Elena needed someone to take Ethan's place.”

Mary's stomach tightened.

“What do you mean?”

Daniel said nothing.

Elena finally spoke.

“Ethan wasn't supposed to be Ethan.”

Mary looked at her.

“Then who was he?”

Elena closed her eyes.

“That's the secret your father made the deal to protect.”

The Boy in the Photograph

Elena walked to the central monitor.

She pressed a button.

An old photograph appeared.

A little boy.

Perhaps seven years old.

Standing beside Elena.

Mary recognized him immediately.

Ethan.

But there was something strange about the photograph.

The boy's face was bruised.

His wrist carried a hospital bracelet.

Mary looked closer.

“Where was this taken?”

“A private clinic.”

“Why?”

“He had been rescued.”

“From what?”

Elena's expression hardened.

“Richard.”

Mary stared.

“Richard kidnapped him?”

“No.”

Elena looked at her.

“Richard created him.”

Mary didn't understand.

“What does that mean?”

“Ethan was a child without a legal identity.”

Mary's eyes widened.

“An orphan?”

“No.”

“A child whose records had been erased.”

Mary stared at the photograph.

“Why?”

“Because someone wanted him to disappear.”

“Who?”

Elena's answer was barely audible.

“Your father.”

Mary stepped backward.

“No.”

Elena nodded.

“James ordered the removal of Ethan's original identity.”

“Why?”

“To protect him.”

“From Richard?”

“Yes.”

Mary's mind raced.

“So Dad knew Ethan before I did.”

“Yes.”

“And he knew Ethan's real identity.”

“Yes.”

“Then why did he let Ethan come near me?”

Elena's eyes filled with regret.

“Because James believed Ethan was the only person Richard couldn't control.”

Mary stared.

“But Ethan betrayed him.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Elena's face became cold.

“Because someone changed the plan.”

“Who?”

Elena looked at the floor.

“Vanessa.”

Everyone turned toward her.

Vanessa's face went white.

“What?”

Mary stared at Vanessa.

“You?”

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.”

Elena continued:

“Vanessa was the one who gave Richard access to Ethan.”

Vanessa began crying.

“I didn't know what he was going to do.”

“You knew enough.”

“I was trying to save my daughter.”

Mary stepped toward her.

“Your daughter.”

Vanessa nodded.

“Elena took her.”

Mary froze.

“Why?”

Vanessa wiped her tears.

“Because she knew Richard would use her against me.”

Mary looked at Elena.

“You took Vanessa's daughter?”

Elena's eyes closed.

“Yes.”

“Where is she?”

Elena didn't answer.

“Where is she?”

“She is safe.”

“Where?”

“I can't tell you.”

Mary's voice rose.

“You don't get to decide anymore!”

Elena looked at her daughter.

“I do if telling you puts her life at risk.”

Mary shook her head.

“Everyone says that.”

The Second Contract

Claire suddenly called from the computer.

“Mary.”

Everyone turned.

She was standing at another terminal.

“I found something.”

“What?”

“A second agreement.”

Mary approached.

Claire opened the document.

It was dated eight years ago.

The parties were:

James Carter

Elena Carter

Richard Hale

And one additional name.

Daniel Hale.

Mary looked at Daniel.

“What is this?”

Daniel stepped closer.

His face changed.

“I've never seen it.”

The agreement stated that Daniel would receive a large payment in exchange for protecting Mary.

Mary looked at him.

“You were hired to protect me.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

“It says your name.”

“I know.”

“You were paid.”

“I never received it.”

Mary pointed to the bank records.

“The money went into your account.”

Daniel stared.

“But I never accessed it.”

Claire checked the transaction history.

“He's right.”

“What?”

“The account was opened in Daniel's name.”

“By whom?”

Claire searched.

Then froze.

Mary noticed.

“Who?”

Claire looked up.

“James Carter.”

Mary's father.

Daniel's face went pale.

“My father-in-law?”

Mary corrected him.

“My father.”

Daniel looked at her.

“You mean…”

Mary stared at the document.

“My father hired you.”

“Yes.”

“To protect me.”

“Yes.”

“But you didn't know.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

Mary looked at him.

“Then why did he never tell me?”

Elena answered:

“Because the moment Daniel knew the truth, Richard would have killed him.”

Daniel stared at Elena.

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“You knew my entire life was a lie.”

“Yes.”

“You knew my father was murdered because of Richard.”

“Yes.”

“And you still kept me away from Mary.”

“Yes.”

Daniel's voice broke.

“Why?”

Elena looked at him.

“Because your father made the same mistake mine did.”

Daniel frowned.

“What mistake?”

“Trusting Richard.”

The Betrayal

Suddenly, Claire shouted.

“Someone's accessing the server.”

The monitors began flashing.

A new folder appeared.

FATHER'S DEAL — FINAL TERMS

Mary opened it.

There was a video.

Her father appeared on screen.

He looked younger.

Healthy.

Terrified.

He was sitting across from Richard.

Mary pressed play.

Richard spoke first.

“You want your daughter alive.”

James nodded.

“I'll give you what you want.”

“Everything?”

“Everything.”

Richard smiled.

“Then sign.”

James picked up the pen.

But before signing, he asked:

“And Elena?”

Richard's expression changed.

“She dies.”

James stopped.

“No.”

“Then no deal.”

James looked devastated.

“What if she disappears?”

Richard considered it.

“Disappears?”

“You can tell everyone she's dead.”

Richard smiled.

“And in return?”

“You leave her alone.”

Richard leaned back.

“Fine.”

James signed.

Mary stared at the screen.

Her father had sacrificed his empire to save Elena.

But then the video continued.

Richard said:

“One more condition.”

James looked up.

“What?”

“Your daughter must marry Ethan.”

James froze.

“No.”

Richard smiled.

“Then Elena dies.”

Mary's heart pounded.

Her father had refused.

Again.

And again.

Richard eventually threatened to kill Mary.

Finally, James agreed.

But before signing the final page, he asked:

“What happens after the marriage?”

Richard smiled.

“You'll find out.”

The video ended.

Mary stood in silence.

Her father hadn't willingly given her to Ethan.

He had been forced.

But that still left one question.

Who had changed Ethan?

The Man Behind the Mask

Daniel suddenly noticed something.

“Wait.”

He replayed the video.

“Stop there.”

The image froze.

Richard was holding a folder.

Daniel zoomed in.

A name appeared on the cover.

ORCHID — SUBJECT 17

Daniel stared.

“That's him.”

Mary turned.

“Who?”

“The boy in the photograph.”

Ethan.

Daniel enlarged the image.

Under the name was another line.

Original Identity: Unknown.

Then another.

Current Identity: Ethan Carter.

Mary stared.

“But if his original identity is unknown…”

Daniel whispered:

“Then Ethan wasn't the boy's real name.”

Elena stepped closer.

“That was only the identity Richard gave him.”

Mary looked at her.

“What was his real name?”

Elena hesitated.

Then said:

“Adrian.”

Mary frowned.

“Adrian who?”

Elena's face went pale.

“Adrian Hale.”

Daniel froze.

“My family?”

Elena nodded.

“Your brother.”

Daniel took a step backward.

“No.”

Mary looked between them.

“Daniel has a brother?”

Elena nodded.

“He disappeared twenty years ago.”

Daniel's face became white.

“My brother was seven.”

“So was Ethan.”

Daniel stared at the photograph.

The boy's face suddenly looked different.

Not Ethan.

Not a stranger.

A child from a memory he had buried.

Daniel whispered:

“Adrian.”

Mary looked at him.

“You're sure?”

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

“He had a scar.”

He pointed at the photograph.

“Behind his left ear.”

Mary zoomed in.

There it was.

A small crescent-shaped scar.

Daniel sat down.

“It's him.”

Mary couldn't speak.

Ethan wasn't merely an impostor.

He was Daniel's missing brother.

The Real Betrayal

Mary's phone suddenly rang.

Ethan.

She answered.

“Where are you?”

Silence.

Then his voice.

“You found out.”

Mary's heart pounded.

“Adrian.”

Silence.

She heard him breathe.

Then:

“So my mother finally told you.”

Mary froze.

“Your mother?”

“Yes.”

“Elena?”

“Yes.”

Mary looked at Elena.

Ethan continued.

“You've been asking the wrong questions, Mary.”

“What do you want?”

“I want my life back.”

“You stole mine.”

“No.”

His voice became colder.

“Your father did.”

Mary's eyes narrowed.

“You're lying.”

“Ask him.”

“My father already told me everything.”

Ethan laughed softly.

“No.”

“What?”

“He didn't tell you about the final part of the deal.”

Mary felt cold.

“What final part?”

Ethan paused.

Then said:

“Your father didn't agree to my marriage with you because Richard threatened him.”

Mary froze.

“He agreed because he needed me.”

“Why?”

“Because I was the only person who could kill Richard.”

Mary stared.

“What?”

Ethan's voice dropped.

“Your father hired me.”

Mary couldn't breathe.

“To kill Richard?”

“Yes.”

“And you?”

“I accepted.”

“Then why did you betray us?”

Silence.

Ethan whispered:

“Because Richard offered me something better.”

“What?”

“My identity.”

Mary's blood ran cold.

Ethan continued:

“He promised to tell me who I really was.”

“And did he?”

“No.”

“Then why work for him?”

Ethan laughed bitterly.

“Because I discovered the truth.”

Mary's heart pounded.

“What truth?”

Ethan said:

“Richard isn't the man who destroyed my family.”

Mary waited.

“Then who?”

Ethan's voice became barely audible.

“Your father.”

The call ended.

Mary slowly lowered the phone.

Elena looked terrified.

Daniel stood.

“What did he say?”

Mary looked at them.

“He says Dad destroyed his family.”

Daniel shook his head.

“That's impossible.”

Elena whispered:

“No.”

Mary turned.

“You know something.”

Elena closed her eyes.

“Your father did something unforgivable.”

“What?”

“He didn't just erase Ethan's identity.”

Mary waited.

“He erased Daniel's family.”

Daniel's face collapsed.

“My family?”

Elena nodded.

“He believed they were dangerous.”

Daniel stared at her.

“Why?”

Elena whispered:

“Because your father discovered the truth about Project Orchid.”

Mary's eyes narrowed.

“What truth?”

Elena looked at both of them.

“The project wasn't created to protect us.”

She paused.

“It was created to replace us.”

Mary felt a chill.

“Replace who?”

Elena looked toward the blue file.

“Everyone.”

Outside, a car engine roared.

Then another.

Security lights illuminated the windows.

Claire rushed in.

“Mary!”

“What?”

“We have a problem.”

“What?”

“The police just arrived.”

Mary frowned.

“Why?”

Claire's face was pale.

“They're not here for your father.”

“Then who?”

Claire handed Mary her phone.

A breaking-news alert filled the screen.

DANIEL HALE WANTED FOR THE ATTEMPTED MURDER OF JAMES CARTER

Mary stared.

“What?”

The article claimed Daniel had attacked Mary's father and orchestrated his disappearance from the hospital.

There were photographs.

Security footage.

Witness statements.

Everything.

Too perfect.

Daniel shook his head.

“I didn't do this.”

Mary looked at him.

“I know.”

But Daniel suddenly stepped backward.

He looked toward the door.

“They're coming for me.”

Mary grabbed his arm.

“Wait.”

Daniel pulled away.

“If they arrest me, you'll never find the truth.”

“Then stay.”

“I can't.”

“Daniel!”

He looked at her.

For a second, she saw the same broken man she had trusted.

Then he said:

“Your father made a deal with me too.”

“What deal?”

Daniel's eyes filled with regret.

“He promised me the truth about my brother.”

Mary froze.

“And what did you promise him?”

Daniel said nothing.

“Daniel.”

He looked at her.

“I promised to protect you.”

A pause.

“Even if it meant betraying you.”

Mary's heart sank.

“Have you?”

Daniel looked away.

“I don't know anymore.”

The front doors exploded inward.

Police flooded the house.

Daniel disappeared through the hidden passage.

Mary stood frozen.

Then she looked down.

The blue file was gone.

Someone had taken it.

She turned toward Elena.

“Mom.”

Elena wasn't there.

Mary's eyes widened.

She ran toward the hidden room.

Empty.

Her mother had disappeared again.

Only a single note remained on the table.

Mary opened it.

Her mother's handwriting.

I am sorry.

Below it:

Your father made the deal.

I broke it.

Daniel kept it.

Ethan betrayed it.

And finally:

But the person who started all of this was never Richard.

Mary's hands trembled.

She turned the page.

There was one final sentence.

It was me.

Mary stared at the words.

Then her phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number.

A photograph appeared.

It showed Elena.

Alive.

Standing beside Richard.

And between them stood Ethan.

But this photograph had been taken twenty years ago.

The caption beneath it contained only three words:

Before you were born.

Mary's blood ran cold.

Because suddenly, the question wasn't who had betrayed whom.

May you like

The question was—

What had her mother been planning before Mary was even born?
