Chapter 12 — Mary Strikes Back

Chapter 12 — Mary Strikes Back
For several seconds, Mary couldn't move.
Ethan stood in the doorway.
Richard beside him.
And between them was a little girl.
The child was perhaps eight years old.
She had Vanessa's eyes.
But something about her face made Mary's heart tighten.
She looked familiar.
Far too familiar.
Ethan rested a hand on the girl's shoulder.
“Mary.”
Mary's voice was cold.
“Let her go.”
Richard laughed.
“You still think you're in a position to give orders.”
Mary didn't look at him.
“Let. Her. Go.”
Ethan looked at the child.
“She's safe.”
“She's terrified.”
“So are you.”
Mary finally looked directly at Ethan.
“No.”
She took a step forward.
“I'm angry.”
Ethan smiled faintly.
“That makes you dangerous.”
Mary's eyes narrowed.
“You should be afraid.”
The Girl
Vanessa's daughter looked at Mary.
Her lips trembled.
“Are you Mary?”
Mary's expression softened.
“Yes.”
“Mom said you would come.”
Mary froze.
“Vanessa told you about me?”
The girl nodded.
“She said you were the only person who could save me.”
Richard laughed.
“Vanessa says many things.”
Mary ignored him.
“What is your name?”
The girl hesitated.
“Lily.”
Mary felt something strange.
The name wasn't in any document.
Not in the blue file.
Not in Project Orchid.
“Lily what?”
The girl shook her head.
“I don't know.”
Mary looked at Ethan.
“What did you do to her?”
“Nothing.”
“Then why doesn't she know her last name?”
Richard answered:
“Because she doesn't have one.”
Mary's eyes hardened.
“Everyone has a name.”
“Not in our world.”
Mary looked at Lily.
“Come here.”
Lily looked at Ethan.
He nodded.
The girl slowly walked toward Mary.
Richard didn't stop her.
When Lily reached Mary, she whispered:
“I remember a woman.”
“Who?”
“She had your eyes.”
Mary's heart stopped.
“My eyes?”
Lily nodded.
“She used to sing to me.”
Mary looked toward Elena.
Her mother was still trapped behind the glass.
Elena was crying.
Mary turned back to Lily.
“Was it my mother?”
Lily shook her head.
“No.”
“Who?”
Lily whispered:
“You.”
Mary froze.
The Memory
A headache exploded behind Mary's eyes.
She stumbled.
Images flashed through her mind.
A small room.
A child's laughter.
A woman singing.
A little girl holding Mary's hand.
Mary was older in the memory.
Maybe eighteen.
Maybe nineteen.
But the girl was Lily.
Mary gasped.
“No.”
Another image.
A hospital.
A needle.
A doctor.
Adrian Vale.
Then darkness.
Mary fell to her knees.
Ethan grabbed her.
“Mary.”
She shoved him away.
“Don't touch me.”
Richard looked pleased.
“Now you're beginning to remember.”
Mary looked up.
“What did you do to me?”
Richard smiled.
“Nothing.”
Vale's voice suddenly came from the speakers.
“Not yet.”
Mary froze.
The monitors turned on.
Adrian Vale appeared on every screen.
“Memory is fascinating.”
Mary stared at him.
“You erased me.”
Vale smiled.
“Not exactly.”
“What did you do?”
“I separated memories from emotion.”
Mary shook her head.
“You experimented on me.”
“No.”
Vale paused.
“Your mother did.”
Mary turned toward Elena.
Elena shook her head desperately.
“No.”
Vale continued.
“Your mother asked me to remove one memory.”
“Which one?”
“Lily.”
Mary looked at the little girl.
“Why?”
“Because Lily's existence could destroy everything.”
The Secret
Mary stood.
“Tell me the truth.”
Vale smiled.
“You were twenty years old.”
“You had discovered Project Orchid.”
“You discovered that Richard was using children to create false identities.”
“You found Lily.”
“You tried to expose him.”
Mary stared.
“And my mother stopped me.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because she believed Lily was the key to bringing down Richard.”
Mary frowned.
“Then why erase my memory?”
“Because someone threatened your life.”
“Who?”
Vale looked at Richard.
Richard didn't speak.
Vale said:
“Your father.”
Mary's heart sank.
Again.
Her father.
Always her father.
“What did he do?”
“He made a deal.”
“What deal?”
Vale smiled.
“His final deal.”
The Father's Final Deal
The monitors changed.
A recording appeared.
James Carter.
Older.
Tired.
Sitting across from Adrian Vale.
Mary watched in silence.
Vale asked:
“Do you want your daughter to remember?”
James shook his head.
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because she will go after Richard.”
“She already has.”
“She doesn't understand what she's facing.”
Vale leaned forward.
“You want me to erase her memory.”
James closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
“In exchange for?”
“My life.”
Vale smiled.
“You're offering yourself?”
“Yes.”
“Richard wants you dead.”
“I know.”
“And Elena?”
“She gets to live.”
“And Mary?”
James looked toward the camera.
“She gets to forget.”
Mary's eyes filled with tears.
Her father looked directly into the recording.
“I am sorry, sweetheart.”
His voice broke.
“But if you remember, they will kill you.”
The recording ended.
Mary stood completely still.
For the first time, she understood.
Her father hadn't betrayed her because he didn't love her.
He had betrayed her because he believed forgetting was the only way to keep her alive.
But someone had changed the deal.
Because Mary was still being hunted.
The First Move
Mary wiped her tears.
Then looked at Richard.
“You thought you won.”
Richard smiled.
“I did.”
“You thought I would run.”
“I expected it.”
“You thought the wedding destroyed me.”
“It did.”
Mary smiled.
“No.”
Richard frowned.
“You made one mistake.”
“What?”
“You assumed I was still the woman who walked into that hotel room.”
Ethan watched her carefully.
Mary turned toward him.
“You should have killed me when you had the chance.”
Ethan's expression changed.
“I never wanted you dead.”
“You wanted my shares.”
“Yes.”
“You wanted my trust.”
“Yes.”
“You wanted me to sign.”
“Yes.”
Mary nodded.
“And now you have nothing.”
Richard laughed.
“You have no shares.”
Mary smiled.
“Wrong.”
She pulled a small device from her pocket.
Richard's face changed.
“What is that?”
“A copy of the shareholder registry.”
“You don't have access.”
“I don't need access.”
Mary pressed a button.
Every monitor changed.
Blackstone's ownership records appeared.
Richard's name was highlighted.
Then crossed out.
Ethan's name was crossed out.
A new entity appeared.
CARTER FAMILY TRUST — CONTROLLING INTEREST: 61.4%
Richard's smile disappeared.
“No.”
Mary looked at him.
“You forgot something.”
“What?”
“My father never transferred the controlling shares.”
Richard stared.
Mary continued:
“He transferred the voting rights.”
“To whom?”
“To a trust.”
Richard's face became pale.
“And I am the sole beneficiary.”
The Trap
Richard stepped toward her.
“You're bluffing.”
Mary smiled.
“Am I?”
She pressed another button.
A recording began playing.
Richard heard his own voice.
“Once she marries Ethan, the trust dissolves.”
Then James's voice.
“Only if she signs the transfer.”
Richard's voice:
“She will.”
James:
“What if she doesn't?”
Richard laughed.
“Then we'll make her.”
The recording ended.
Mary looked at him.
“You said those words.”
Richard's face was expressionless.
“Where did you get that?”
“Your private server.”
“You don't have access.”
“I did.”
Richard looked at Ethan.
Ethan looked confused.
Mary smiled.
“While you were all busy trying to control me, I was learning how to control you.”
The Betrayal Nobody Expected
Ethan suddenly stepped forward.
“Mary.”
She turned.
“I can explain.”
“No.”
“You don't understand.”
“I understand everything.”
“I was protecting you.”
Mary laughed.
“You slept with Vanessa.”
“I needed her cooperation.”
“You lied to me.”
“Yes.”
“You planned the wedding.”
“Yes.”
“You knew my identity had been altered.”
“Yes.”
Mary's eyes hardened.
“And you knew Lily.”
Ethan went silent.
Mary stepped closer.
“You knew her before tonight.”
“Yes.”
“Where did you meet her?”
“I helped hide her.”
“From Richard?”
Ethan shook his head.
“From Vale.”
Mary stared.
“Why?”
“Because Vale wanted her dead.”
Mary glanced at Lily.
“Why is she so important?”
Ethan hesitated.
“She has the original Orchid records.”
Mary's eyes widened.
“What?”
Ethan nodded.
“When Lily was a baby, Vanessa was working for Vale.”
Vanessa's daughter had been used as a carrier for data.
A tiny encrypted storage device had been implanted in her medical bracelet.
The bracelet contained the original Orchid records.
Names.
Payments.
Experiments.
Everything.
Mary looked at Lily.
“Where is it?”
Lily pointed toward her neck.
Mary saw a thin scar.
“It's inside me.”
Mary's heart broke.
“Who did that to you?”
Lily looked at Richard.
“He did.”
Richard's face changed.
“That's a lie.”
Lily began crying.
“You told me I was special.”
Mary turned toward Richard.
“You experimented on a child.”
Richard shook his head.
“I didn't.”
“Then who did?”
Richard looked at Vale's image.
“Ask him.”
The screen went black.
Mary's Counterattack
Mary understood something.
Everyone had been fighting over information.
The blue file.
Lily.
The DNA records.
The ownership shares.
Her mother's identity.
Daniel's memories.
And she had been trying to solve each mystery separately.
That had been the mistake.
They were all connected.
Project Orchid wasn't about money.
It was about control.
Control of identity.
Control of memory.
Control of ownership.
Control of people.
Mary looked at Ethan.
“Where is Daniel?”
Ethan didn't answer.
Mary pulled out her phone.
“I know where he is.”
Ethan's expression changed.
“How?”
“Because he sent me a message before you arrived.”
She showed him the screen.
A location.
A warehouse.
Ethan's face became pale.
“He shouldn't have been able to contact you.”
“He did.”
Mary smiled.
“And he isn't alone.”
Daniel Returns
The warehouse doors suddenly opened.
Daniel walked in.
Behind him were federal investigators.
Claire.
And Vanessa.
Richard stepped backward.
“What is this?”
Daniel looked at Mary.
“You wanted the truth.”
Mary nodded.
“I do.”
Daniel held up a drive.
“I found the original Orchid database.”
Vale's voice came through the speakers.
“Impossible.”
Daniel smiled.
“That's what you said when I escaped.”
Mary looked at him.
“Your memory?”
Daniel nodded.
“I remember.”
“What?”
“Everything.”
He looked at Ethan.
“I remember my brother.”
Ethan's face changed.
“Daniel.”
“I remember our mother.”
Elena began crying.
“I remember Vale.”
Daniel turned toward the cameras.
“And I remember who started Project Orchid.”
Everyone became silent.
Mary looked at him.
“Who?”
Daniel said:
“Adrian Vale.”
The monitors flickered.
Vale appeared.
“You still believe that?”
Daniel smiled.
“No.”
He held up the drive.
“I know.”
He plugged it into the main server.
Thousands of files appeared.
Names.
Dates.
Payments.
Recordings.
Medical reports.
Then one document appeared at the top.
PROJECT ORCHID — MASTER AUTHORIZATION
Mary looked at the signature.
Her breath caught.
The signature wasn't Richard's.
It wasn't Vale's.
It wasn't Elena's.
It wasn't James's.
It belonged to someone else.
Mary whispered:
“Who is that?”
Daniel stared.
“I don't know.”
Vanessa stepped forward.
“I do.”
Everyone turned.
Vanessa looked terrified.
“That signature belongs to the first person who funded Project Orchid.”
Mary's heart pounded.
“Who?”
Vanessa whispered:
“Your grandfather.”
Silence.
Mary stared at her.
“My grandfather died before I was born.”
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.”
She pointed toward the screen.
“He didn't.”
Mary's blood ran cold.
“He's alive.”
The Man in the Shadows
A slow clap echoed through the underground chamber.
Everyone turned.
A man stepped out of the darkness.
Old.
Elegant.
Silver-haired.
Mary had never seen him before.
But Elena had.
She collapsed against the glass.
“No.”
The man smiled.
“Hello, Elena.”
Mary stared.
“Who are you?”
The man looked at her.
Then smiled.
“My name is Alexander Carter.”
Mary's heart stopped.
“My grandfather.”
He nodded.
“The family you thought was dead…”
He spread his arms.
“…was never dead.”
Mary stared at him.
“You funded Orchid.”
“Yes.”
“You created all of this.”
“No.”
He smiled.
“I created the people who created it.”
Richard stepped forward.
“Father.”
Mary looked at Richard.
Her grandfather smiled.
“Richard.”
Then Mary understood.
Richard wasn't the mastermind.
Vale wasn't the mastermind.
Elena wasn't the mastermind.
Her father wasn't the mastermind.
They had all been pieces.
Alexander looked at Mary.
“And you, my dear…”
He smiled.
“…were always the final piece.”
Mary's fingers curled into fists.
“You're wrong.”
Alexander raised an eyebrow.
“Am I?”
Mary looked around the room.
At Daniel.
At Vanessa.
At Lily.
At Elena.
At Ethan.
Then at the servers containing everything.
“No.”
She smiled.
“You made one mistake.”
Alexander frowned.
“What?”
“You spent twenty years teaching everyone how to manipulate people.”
Mary stepped toward the main control panel.
“But you forgot to teach me how to lose.”
She pressed one final button.
Every file in the Orchid database began uploading to the public network.
Alexander's face changed.
Richard shouted:
“Stop her!”
Too late.
The screen flashed:
UPLOAD COMPLETE.
Mary turned toward them.
“It's over.”
Alexander smiled.
“No.”
He looked at the monitors.
Then at Mary.
“You've just started the war.”
And somewhere above them, every television in the city suddenly switched to the same message:
PROJECT ORCHID — EXPOSED.
Mary watched the first headlines appear.
Blackstone collapsed.
Richard's accounts were frozen.
Politicians were being named.
Police were rushing toward the Carter estate.
The world was finally seeing the truth.
But then Mary's phone vibrated.
One new message.
No number.
No name.
Only five words:
Lily is not Vanessa's daughter.
Mary stared at the screen.
Then another message appeared.
She's yours.
Mary's blood ran cold.
She looked at Lily.
The little girl was staring back at her.
And for the first time, Mary noticed something she should have seen much earlier.
Lily had the same small crescent-shaped birthmark as Mary.
The exact same mark.
Mary slowly whispered:
“No…”
Behind her, Elena began to cry.
May you like
Because she already knew the truth.
And this time, even she couldn't hide it.
