Chapter 13 — The Truth About Her Mother

Chapter 13 — The Truth About Her Mother

Mary stared at the message.

LILY IS NOT VANESSA'S DAUGHTER.

A second message appeared.

SHE'S YOURS.

The room seemed to tilt.

Mary looked at the little girl.

Lily looked back at her.

The same dark eyes.

The same small crescent-shaped mark near the collarbone.

The same expression Mary had seen in her own childhood photographs.

“No,” Mary whispered.

Elena covered her mouth.

Daniel stared at the screen.

Vanessa began crying.

Richard looked away.

And Alexander Carter simply smiled.

Mary turned slowly toward her mother.

“Tell me.”

Elena didn't move.

“Mom.”

Still nothing.

Mary's voice rose.

“Tell me the truth!”

Elena finally looked at her.

“Yes.”

One word.

It shattered whatever remained of Mary's certainty.

“Yes,” Elena repeated.

“Lily is your daughter.”

The Child Mary Forgot

Mary couldn't breathe.

“How?”

Elena stepped closer to the glass.

“You were pregnant.”

Mary stared at her.

“No.”

“You were twenty.”

“No.”

“You don't remember because Vale removed the memory.”

Mary shook her head violently.

“I would remember having a child.”

“You don't.”

“Because you took her.”

Elena closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

Mary's face twisted with pain.

“You took my daughter from me.”

“I saved her.”

“You stole her!”

“I saved her life!”

The two women stared at each other.

For the first time, Elena's composure broke.

“If I hadn't taken Lily, Richard would have killed her.”

Mary's voice trembled.

“Why?”

“Because Lily carried something Richard desperately wanted.”

Mary looked at the servers.

“The Orchid records.”

Elena nodded.

“Not exactly.”

“Then what?”

Elena looked at Lily.

“Her DNA.”

Mary frowned.

“What about it?”

“It contains a genetic sequence that Vale believed could be used to restore suppressed memories.”

Mary went still.

“Restore them?”

“Yes.”

“That's why he wanted her.”

“Yes.”

“And that's why you hid her.”

“Yes.”

Mary looked at Lily.

The little girl was watching them silently.

Mary's heart broke.

She had spent years believing she had never been a mother.

Meanwhile, somewhere in the world, her daughter had been growing up without her.

The Memory Beneath the Memory

Mary suddenly felt dizzy.

The room blurred.

Then a memory surfaced.

A hospital room.

White curtains.

Rain against the window.

Her younger self lying in a bed.

A newborn baby crying.

Mary reached for her.

A woman stood beside her.

Elena.

“You can't keep her.”

Young Mary cried.

“She is mine.”

“I know.”

“Then why?”

“Because they'll find her.”

A door opened.

Dr. Vale entered.

Young Mary screamed.

“Get away from her!”

Vale smiled.

“It's already too late.”

Then a needle.

A sharp pain.

Darkness.

Mary gasped and grabbed the table.

Daniel caught her.

“Mary!”

She pushed him away.

“I remember.”

Elena's face crumpled.

“What do you remember?”

“My baby.”

She looked at Lily.

“I remember holding her.”

Lily slowly approached.

Mary knelt.

“Come here.”

The girl hesitated.

Then walked into her arms.

Mary held her.

For the first time in years, something inside her felt familiar.

Not romantic.

Not logical.

Something deeper.

Something instinctive.

She whispered:

“I'm your mother.”

Lily began crying.

“I knew.”

Mary pulled back.

“What?”

“My mom told me.”

“Vanessa?”

Lily shook her head.

“Elena.”

Mary looked up.

Her mother was crying.

Why Vanessa Believed Lily Was Hers

Mary stood.

“But Vanessa believed Lily was her daughter.”

Elena nodded.

“Because I made her believe it.”

Mary's expression hardened.

“Why?”

“Because Vanessa was being watched.”

“By Richard?”

“By Vale.”

Elena explained that Vanessa had once worked inside Vale's network.

She had been assigned to protect a group of children whose identities had been erased.

One of those children was Mary's newborn daughter.

Vanessa became attached to the baby.

When Richard discovered Lily's existence, he ordered her removed.

Vanessa refused.

So Elena made a desperate choice.

She altered the records.

She created a new identity for Lily.

Lily Hale.

Vanessa was listed as her mother.

Mary's identity was erased from the child's records.

And Elena disappeared.

Mary stared at her mother.

“You made Vanessa hate me.”

“I made Vanessa protect you.”

“She thought I took her child.”

“I needed her to believe that.”

“Why?”

“Because if Vanessa knew Lily was yours, she would have been interrogated.”

“And she would have told them.”

“Yes.”

Mary looked at Vanessa.

Vanessa was crying silently.

“I really thought she was my daughter.”

Elena nodded.

“I know.”

Vanessa looked at Mary.

“I hated you.”

Mary said nothing.

“I blamed you for years.”

“I know.”

“And now…”

Vanessa looked at Lily.

“I don't know what to believe.”

Mary answered quietly:

“Neither do I.”

The Woman Behind the Woman

Mary turned back to Elena.

“You said the woman in the Carter estate wasn't you.”

“No.”

“Who was she?”

“A woman named Mara.”

“Your double.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Richard was searching for me.”

Mary stared.

“So you created another Elena.”

“Yes.”

“You used her to communicate with me.”

“When necessary.”

“You knew I'd find her.”

“I hoped you would.”

Mary's eyes narrowed.

“Why?”

“Because I needed you to believe I was still alive.”

Mary shook her head.

“You could have just told me.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because Alexander was watching you.”

Mary looked toward her grandfather.

Alexander stood calmly near the doorway.

“Why?”

Elena's expression changed.

“Because he knew about Lily.”

Alexander finally spoke.

“I knew everything.”

Mary looked at him.

“Then why didn't you take her?”

“Because I didn't want her.”

“Then what did you want?”

“You.”

Mary frowned.

“Why?”

“Because you inherited something your mother never understood.”

“What?”

“Control.”

Mary laughed bitterly.

“You destroyed your own family for control.”

Alexander smiled.

“My dear, family is merely the first organization a person learns to control.”

Mary's face hardened.

“You're insane.”

“Perhaps.”

He stepped closer.

“But I built the world your parents lived in.”

Mary shook her head.

“No.”

She looked at Elena.

“My mother built Project Orchid.”

Alexander smiled.

“Your mother improved it.”

Mary froze.

“She didn't create it.”

“No.”

“Then who did?”

Alexander answered:

“I did.”

The First Orchid

Twenty-five years earlier, Alexander Carter had begun Project Orchid as a financial protection system.

He had discovered that wealthy families could lose everything through identity fraud, forged documents, and hostile takeovers.

His solution was radical.

Create backup identities.

Backup corporations.

Backup heirs.

Backup histories.

If one family member disappeared, another identity could legally take their place.

At first, it was intended as protection.

Then money entered the equation.

And power.

Alexander began using Orchid to manipulate ownership.

Companies could be transferred without appearing transferred.

People could disappear without dying.

Inheritance could be redirected.

Enemies could be erased.

And eventually, children became part of the system.

Elena discovered the truth.

She tried to stop him.

Alexander didn't kill her.

Instead, he offered her a position.

“Help me improve it.”

She refused.

So he threatened Mary.

That was the beginning of Elena's war.

Mary looked at her mother.

“You fought him for twenty years.”

“Yes.”

“And Dad?”

“He tried to help me.”

“Until he made the deal.”

“Yes.”

Mary looked at Alexander.

“You destroyed him.”

Alexander smiled.

“He destroyed himself.”

“No.”

Mary's voice became cold.

“You gave him impossible choices.”

Alexander didn't answer.

Mary stepped closer.

“You made him choose between me and Mom.”

“Yes.”

“He chose both.”

Alexander's smile disappeared.

“And that's why he failed.”

The Father's Last Message

Claire suddenly rushed toward them.

“Mary!”

She held up a tablet.

“I found something in the database.”

“What?”

“A hidden recording.”

“From whom?”

“Your father.”

Mary's heart stopped.

“Play it.”

Claire pressed the screen.

James appeared.

He looked exhausted.

But unlike the previous recording, he wasn't speaking to Richard.

He was speaking directly to Mary.

“My little girl.”

Mary's eyes filled with tears.

“If you're watching this, then I'm probably gone.”

He paused.

“I need you to know one thing.”

“I never stopped trying to get you back.”

Mary covered her mouth.

“Lily was born because of Orchid.”

Mary stared.

“Your mother wanted to destroy the program.”

“I wanted to use it against Alexander.”

James looked down.

“That was my mistake.”

He continued:

“I believed I could control the system from inside.”

“But systems like this don't belong to the people who build them.”

“They belong to the people who know how to exploit them.”

Mary whispered:

“Dad…”

James continued.

“When Lily was born, I realized Alexander would use her to control you.”

“So I made the hardest decision of my life.”

“I let Elena take her.”

Mary began crying.

“I allowed you to believe your daughter was dead.”

“I allowed Vanessa to believe she had lost her child.”

“And I allowed myself to become the villain in your story.”

James looked directly into the camera.

“I am sorry.”

The recording ended.

Mary couldn't speak.

Elena looked down.

“Your father died believing you would eventually discover the truth.”

Mary wiped her face.

“And he was right.”

The Hidden Clause

Claire suddenly frowned.

“There's another document.”

Mary turned.

“What?”

“It was buried inside the trust agreement.”

She opened it.

At first, it looked like another corporate contract.

Then Mary saw the final clause.

Upon the twenty-fifth birthday of the heir, all Orchid-controlled assets shall transfer to the biological descendant of Mary Carter.

Mary stared.

“Biological descendant.”

Claire nodded.

“Lily.”

Mary finally understood.

Alexander had never wanted Mary's shares.

He wanted Lily.

Because Lily was the next legal heir.

If Mary died, the controlling interest would pass to Lily.

And whoever controlled Lily would control Blackstone.

Mary looked at Alexander.

“You never wanted me.”

Alexander smiled.

“I wanted what comes after you.”

Mary's expression hardened.

“Then you've made another mistake.”

“What?”

“You assumed Lily would inherit everything.”

Alexander's smile faded.

“She will.”

“No.”

Mary held up the contract.

“She won't.”

“What did you do?”

Mary pointed at the final page.

“Look at the amendment.”

Claire had found it.

A recent legal amendment.

Signed electronically two days earlier.

The heir's rights had been modified.

No person may exercise control over Lily's inheritance until she reaches the age of twenty-five.

Alexander stared.

“Who authorized that?”

Mary smiled.

“Me.”

“You couldn't.”

“I could.”

“You didn't have the authority.”

Mary looked at him.

“I did.”

Because her father had quietly given her one final power.

A power hidden in the original trust.

The power to amend the inheritance conditions at any time if Orchid was used against her.

Alexander's face darkened.

“You think paperwork can stop me?”

Mary answered:

“No.”

She looked at the server.

“Evidence can.”

The World Was Watching

The Orchid database continued broadcasting.

News channels around the world were showing names.

Politicians.

Bankers.

Corporate executives.

Doctors.

Security companies.

Everyone connected to the program.

Blackstone's stock collapsed.

Government investigators seized company offices.

International warrants were being prepared.

Richard's accounts were frozen.

Alexander's private foundations were exposed.

But Mary knew something.

This wasn't over.

Because Adrian Vale was still missing.

And the most dangerous people were rarely the ones who appeared in the headlines.

Richard's Confession

Richard suddenly laughed.

Everyone turned.

“You think you've won.”

Mary looked at him.

“You're under arrest.”

“Perhaps.”

He looked at Alexander.

“But he knows what you don't.”

Mary frowned.

“What?”

Richard smiled.

“Your grandfather didn't create Orchid.”

Alexander's expression changed.

Mary noticed.

Richard continued:

“He inherited it.”

Silence.

Mary looked at Alexander.

“From whom?”

Alexander said nothing.

Richard laughed.

“Ask him.”

Mary turned.

“Grandfather.”

Alexander's face remained calm.

“It's irrelevant.”

“No.”

Mary stepped toward him.

“It's the only thing that matters.”

Alexander looked at her.

Then said:

“Orchid existed long before me.”

“Who created it?”

He hesitated.

Then whispered:

“Your great-grandmother.”

Mary froze.

Richard laughed again.

“The Carter family has been doing this for generations.”

Mary stared at Alexander.

“So this wasn't one man's conspiracy.”

“No.”

“It was a family system.”

“Yes.”

“And you inherited it.”

“Yes.”

“My mother tried to destroy it.”

“Yes.”

“My father tried to control it.”

“Yes.”

“And I…”

Alexander smiled.

“You were born to inherit it.”

Mary shook her head.

“No.”

She looked at Lily.

“I was born to end it.”

Alexander's expression hardened.

The Final Betrayal

A gunshot rang through the room.

Everyone screamed.

The bullet struck the wall beside Alexander.

Security rushed forward.

But the shooter wasn't outside.

It was Vanessa.

She stood with trembling hands.

“I won't let you take her again.”

Richard stared at her.

“Vanessa.”

She pointed the weapon at him.

“You ruined my life.”

Richard smiled.

“You did that yourself.”

Vanessa's finger tightened.

Mary stepped between them.

“Vanessa.”

She looked at Mary.

“I thought you stole my daughter.”

“I know.”

“I hated you.”

“I know.”

“But now…”

Vanessa looked at Lily.

“…I know who she belongs to.”

Mary nodded.

“She doesn't belong to anyone.”

Vanessa lowered the weapon.

“She belongs to herself.”

Mary smiled faintly.

“Yes.”

For the first time, Vanessa smiled back.

Then the lights went out.

A scream came from the hallway.

When the emergency lights returned, Alexander was gone.

Richard was gone.

And the room was empty.

Except for a single envelope on the floor.

Mary picked it up.

Her name was written across the front.

MARY.

Inside was a photograph.

A family portrait.

Alexander.

Elena.

James.

Mary.

And another child.

A boy.

Mary stared.

“Who is that?”

Elena went completely pale.

“No.”

Mary turned toward her.

“Mom.”

Elena shook her head.

“No.”

“Who is he?”

Elena couldn't answer.

Daniel suddenly entered the room.

He looked at the photograph.

His face changed.

“That's impossible.”

Mary stared at him.

“You know him.”

Daniel nodded slowly.

“I've seen him before.”

“Where?”

“In Vale's files.”

“Who is he?”

Daniel swallowed.

“He was Subject Zero.”

Mary looked at Elena.

“What does that mean?”

Elena whispered:

“The first child.”

“The first child of Project Orchid.”

Mary's heart pounded.

“Who?”

Elena looked directly at her.

“Your brother.”

Mary froze.

“My brother?”

Elena nodded.

“The child Alexander erased before you were born.”

Mary stared at the photograph.

Daniel whispered:

“That's not the worst part.”

Mary turned.

“What?”

Daniel pointed to the back.

There was a handwritten date.

And beneath it:

SUBJECT ZERO — ALIVE.

Mary's blood ran cold.

Then her phone vibrated.

A message appeared.

You found Lily.

A second message followed.

Now find me.

And beneath it was a name Mary had never heard before.

Noah Carter.

Mary looked at her mother.

Elena was crying.

“Who is Noah?”

Elena whispered:

“Your brother.”

Mary stared at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

I have been watching you since the wedding.

May you like

A pause.

And now I'm coming home.
