Chapter 9 — The Betrayal Nobody Saw Coming

Chapter 9 — The Betrayal Nobody Saw Coming
Mary did not sleep that night.
She sat alone in the hidden room of the Carter estate, staring at the photograph her mother had left behind.
Elena Carter.
Alive.
Standing beside a young Ethan.
But beneath the photograph was a sentence that refused to leave Mary's mind.
That isn't his real name.
Across the table, Daniel was going through the blue file again.
“You're sure she was here?” Mary asked.
Daniel didn't look up.
“Yes.”
“My mother?”
“Yes.”
“Then why did she disappear?”
“I don't know.”
Mary's eyes hardened.
“You said you were there the night she disappeared.”
“I was.”
“You said Ethan came.”
“Yes.”
“And now you're telling me he may not even be Ethan.”
Daniel finally looked at her.
“I told you what I knew.”
Mary stood.
“No. You told me pieces.”
She picked up the photograph.
“You've been investigating my family for three years. You knew my mother was alive. You knew Victoria was alive. You knew Ethan was involved.”
Daniel remained silent.
“You knew everything except the part that would make me trust you.”
“I didn't know enough.”
Mary laughed bitterly.
“Everyone knows enough to lie to me.”
Daniel's expression tightened.
“I never wanted to hurt you.”
“But you did.”
“Yes.”
The answer stopped her.
Daniel stood.
“I know.”
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then Mary's phone rang.
Claire.
Mary answered.
“Where are you?”
“I'm at Blackstone.”
“Why?”
“I found something.”
Mary's expression changed.
“What?”
“A private server.”
“What kind?”
“Your father's.”
Mary looked at Daniel.
“Can you access it?”
“I'm trying.”
“Don't.”
Claire paused.
“What?”
“Don't open anything until I get there.”
“Mary, you need to hear this.”
“What?”
Claire lowered her voice.
“There are recordings.”
“Of what?”
“Your wedding.”
Mary froze.
“What do you mean?”
“Not the ceremony.”
Claire swallowed.
“The presidential suite.”
Twenty minutes later, Mary and Daniel arrived at Blackstone's headquarters.
The building was almost empty.
Claire was waiting in the basement archive.
She looked pale.
“What did you find?”
Claire pointed toward a computer.
“This server was hidden behind the old accounting system.”
Mary sat down.
“Show me.”
Claire opened the first folder.
WEDDING / SECURITY / PRIVATE
Inside were dozens of video files.
Mary recognized the timestamps.
The day of her wedding.
She opened the first recording.
The screen showed the presidential suite.
Ethan entered.
Vanessa was already there.
Mary watched without blinking.
Ethan closed the door.
Vanessa asked:
“What if she finds out?”
Ethan answered:
“She won't.”
Mary's fingers tightened around the chair.
Vanessa said:
“You promised me she wouldn't be hurt.”
Ethan looked at her.
“She won't be.”
“And her father?”
Ethan's face changed.
“He isn't part of the plan.”
Vanessa frowned.
“Then why did Richard order the accident?”
Mary froze.
Claire looked at her.
Daniel stepped closer.
The recording continued.
Ethan said:
“Because Richard doesn't trust anyone.”
Vanessa whispered:
“He's going to kill him.”
Ethan didn't answer.
Mary paused the video.
“Go back.”
Claire replayed it.
Vanessa:
“Why did Richard order the accident?”
Ethan:
“Because Richard doesn't trust anyone.”
Mary stood.
“My father's accident wasn't an accident.”
“No,” Daniel said.
“It was murder.”
Claire nodded.
“But that's not the worst part.”
Mary looked at her.
“There are more recordings.”
The second file showed Richard.
He was sitting in an office with a woman whose face was hidden.
Mary leaned closer.
The woman's voice was distorted.
Richard said:
“You promised me she would never find out.”
The woman answered:
“She won't.”
“What about Ethan?”
“He's under control.”
“And Mary?”
A pause.
“She is the key.”
Mary felt cold.
Richard continued:
“What happens if she refuses?”
The woman replied:
“Then we use Vanessa.”
Mary's eyes widened.
Richard leaned forward.
“And if that doesn't work?”
The woman answered:
“Use Daniel.”
Mary stopped the video.
Silence.
Daniel stared at the screen.
“What?”
Mary slowly turned toward him.
“You.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
“Why would they say your name?”
“I don't know.”
“Three years ago, you worked with Ethan.”
Daniel went silent.
Mary stepped toward him.
“You told me it was revenge.”
“It was.”
“Then why were they planning to use you?”
“I don't know.”
Mary stared into his eyes.
“You're lying again.”
Daniel's face tightened.
“Mary—”
“You knew.”
“No.”
“You knew.”
“I didn't.”
“Then explain it.”
Daniel couldn't.
Claire suddenly spoke.
“There's another file.”
She opened it.
The title was simple.
DANIEL HALE
Daniel went pale.
Mary stared at the screen.
“Open it.”
Claire hesitated.
Then clicked.
A scanned document appeared.
It was a medical record.
Daniel Hale.
Date of birth.
Blood type.
And one sentence highlighted in red:
Biological relationship to Elena Carter — CONFIRMED.
Mary's heart stopped.
She looked at Daniel.
“Your mother?”
Daniel didn't answer.
Mary whispered:
“Your mother is Elena.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“No.”
Mary stepped backward.
“No.”
Daniel finally spoke.
“I didn't know.”
“You didn't know your own mother?”
“She disappeared when I was a child.”
Mary stared.
“You said your family was destroyed by Richard.”
“It was.”
“You said your parents died.”
“My father did.”
“And your mother?”
Daniel's voice broke.
“I thought she died.”
Mary looked at the file.
“But she didn't.”
“No.”
“She became my mother.”
Daniel shook his head.
“I didn't know.”
Mary couldn't process it.
Her mother had disappeared.
Daniel had spent years seeking revenge against the Carter family.
And all along, he had been searching for the woman who had raised Mary.
His own mother.
Claire looked between them.
“There's something else.”
She opened another file.
This one contained a DNA comparison.
Elena Carter / Daniel Hale — 99.99%
Mary stared.
Daniel sat down.
“My God.”
Mary's voice was barely audible.
“You're my mother's son.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Yes.”
Mary took a step back.
“Then…”
She couldn't finish.
Daniel understood.
“You're my sister.”
The room went silent.
Again.
Another impossible family connection.
Another secret.
Another lie.
Mary covered her mouth.
“This can't be happening.”
Daniel shook his head.
“I swear to you, Mary, I didn't know.”
She stared at him.
“How convenient.”
“It's the truth.”
“You expect me to believe that?”
“I don't care if you believe me.”
He looked broken.
“I don't believe it myself.”
Claire suddenly noticed something.
“Wait.”
She zoomed in on the document.
“This isn't the original.”
Mary turned.
“What?”
“The date.”
Claire pointed.
“This file was created three days ago.”
Daniel looked at her.
“What?”
Claire nodded.
“Someone uploaded this recently.”
Mary's expression changed.
“So someone wants us to think Daniel is my brother.”
Daniel stood.
“Why?”
Mary looked at the screen.
“To destroy the only person I might trust.”
Daniel stared at her.
“You think it's fake?”
“I don't know.”
Claire opened another folder.
“Then look at this.”
A second DNA report.
This one was dated eight years earlier.
No biological relationship between Elena Carter and Daniel Hale.
Daniel stared.
“Two contradictory reports.”
Mary whispered:
“Just like Ethan.”
Claire nodded.
“Someone is manufacturing DNA records.”
Mary closed her eyes.
“So we still don't know who anyone really is.”
Suddenly, the building's alarm sounded.
Claire looked toward the hallway.
“What happened?”
The lights began flashing.
Daniel grabbed Mary's arm.
“We need to go.”
Mary pulled free.
“Why?”
“Because someone triggered the security lockdown.”
“How do you know?”
“Because I designed this system.”
Mary looked at him.
“You designed Blackstone's security?”
Daniel nodded.
“Three years ago.”
The doors slammed shut.
Metal shutters descended over the exits.
Claire rushed to the control panel.
“Someone has overridden the system.”
Daniel stared at the screen.
“That's impossible.”
“What?”
“Only three people have access.”
“Who?”
Daniel didn't answer.
Mary looked at him.
“Who?”
He whispered:
“Me.”
Mary's blood ran cold.
“Then someone is using your identity.”
A voice came through the intercom.
Calm.
Female.
Familiar.
“Very good, Mary.”
Mary froze.
Her mother's voice.
Elena.
“Mom?”
The intercom crackled.
“I'm sorry.”
Mary stepped toward the speaker.
“Where are you?”
“I can't tell you.”
“Why are you doing this?”
“Because you don't understand what Daniel has done.”
Daniel's face changed.
“What?”
Elena continued:
“He didn't come into your life by accident.”
Mary looked at Daniel.
“Mom, stop.”
“You need to know the truth.”
Daniel shook his head.
“She's lying.”
Elena's voice became colder.
“Daniel came to the Carter family to destroy you.”
Mary stared at him.
“Is that true?”
Daniel didn't answer.
Elena continued:
“He was paid to get close to you.”
Mary's eyes widened.
“By whom?”
A pause.
Then:
“Your father.”
Daniel's face went pale.
Mary turned toward him.
“You were paid by my father?”
“No.”
“Daniel?”
“No.”
He looked genuinely shocked.
“I swear.”
The intercom crackled again.
“You don't know who to trust, Mary.”
Then the voice whispered:
“That's exactly how I wanted it.”
The system went silent.
Daniel rushed toward the server room.
Mary followed.
“What are you doing?”
“Finding the source.”
He connected his laptop to the central system.
Claire watched.
“Can you trace it?”
“Yes.”
The screen filled with code.
Then a location appeared.
Mary leaned forward.
“Where?”
Daniel's face went pale.
“The Carter estate.”
Mary froze.
“But we just came from there.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
He pointed at the coordinates.
“There's another location.”
Mary stared.
“The old Carter estate?”
“No.”
He zoomed in.
An underground structure beneath the property.
Mary remembered the hidden basement.
“There is no second basement.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Apparently there is.”
They returned to the estate before dawn.
The house was silent.
Too silent.
Mary led them into the basement.
They found the hidden passage.
At the end was a steel door.
No handle.
Daniel examined it.
“Biometric lock.”
Mary frowned.
“What does it need?”
“DNA.”
“Whose?”
Daniel looked at her.
“Your mother's.”
Mary stepped closer.
“There must be another way.”
“There isn't.”
She touched the scanner.
Nothing.
Then she remembered the blue file.
Inside was a tiny strip of paper with four numbers.
0814.
Mary entered them.
The lock clicked.
The door opened.
Behind it was a room filled with monitors.
Hundreds of photographs covered the walls.
Mary.
Ethan.
Daniel.
Vanessa.
Victoria.
Her father.
Richard.
And Elena.
At the center of the room was a large screen.
On it was a single sentence:
EVERYONE HAS A ROLE.
Mary walked closer.
Another line appeared.
MARY — THE HEIR
ETHAN — THE DECOY
DANIEL — THE REVENGE
VANESSA — THE WITNESS
VICTORIA — THE KEY
JAMES — THE LIAR
RICHARD — THE GUARDIAN
Mary stared.
“And Mom?”
The screen went black.
Then one final name appeared.
ELENA — THE ARCHITECT
Mary's blood ran cold.
Daniel whispered:
“She planned all of this.”
“No.”
Mary shook her head.
“She couldn't.”
Then another screen turned on.
A live video.
Elena appeared.
She was sitting in a dark room.
Alive.
Watching them.
“Hello, Mary.”
Mary stepped toward the screen.
“Mom.”
Elena looked at her.
“You finally found the room.”
“Why?”
“Because you were finally ready.”
“Ready for what?”
Elena smiled sadly.
“For the truth.”
Mary's voice trembled.
“You destroyed my life.”
“No.”
“You let me believe you were dead.”
“I had to.”
“You manipulated everyone.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Elena's eyes became cold.
“Because Richard wasn't the person I was trying to stop.”
Mary froze.
“Then who?”
Elena looked directly into the camera.
“You've been asking the wrong question.”
“What question should I ask?”
Elena leaned closer.
“Ask who benefited from my disappearance.”
Mary's mind raced.
Richard?
Ethan?
Her father?
Daniel?
Then Elena said something that made Mary's blood run cold.
“And ask yourself why your father was willing to sacrifice you.”
The screen went black.
Mary turned toward Daniel.
“What does she mean?”
Daniel shook his head.
“I don't know.”
Then Claire shouted from the other side of the room.
“Mary!”
She had found another document.
A list of financial transfers.
One name appeared repeatedly.
Mary Carter.
Payments.
Millions of dollars.
Over eight years.
Mary stared.
“I never received this money.”
Claire nodded.
“I know.”
“Then where did it go?”
Claire pointed to the final column.
Mary read the recipient.
Her face went white.
The money had been transferred into an account belonging to—
Daniel Hale.
Mary slowly turned toward him.
Daniel looked at the screen.
His expression collapsed.
“No.”
Mary stepped backward.
“You were paid.”
“I didn't know.”
“You were paid for eight years.”
“I swear to you, I didn't know.”
Mary's eyes filled with betrayal.
“You knew about my family.”
“Yes.”
“You investigated me.”
“Yes.”
“You worked with Ethan.”
“Yes.”
“And now we find millions transferred into your account.”
Daniel shook his head desperately.
“Mary, I never touched that money.”
“Then who did?”
Daniel looked at the documents.
He whispered:
“I don't know.”
Mary backed away.
For the first time, she was afraid of him.
Not because she knew he had betrayed her.
But because she no longer knew whether he had.
Daniel reached for her.
“Mary.”
She stepped back.
“Don't.”
“I can explain.”
“No.”
“I can prove it.”
“How?”
He looked at the screen.
“Bank records.”
“Get them.”
“I will.”
“Now.”
Daniel took out his phone.
Before he could make the call, it rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
A distorted voice spoke.
“You finally found the money.”
Daniel froze.
Mary watched him.
The voice continued:
“Tell Mary who you really are.”
Daniel's face went pale.
The caller laughed.
“Or should I?”
Daniel whispered:
“Who are you?”
The answer came softly.
“You've been working for me for three years.”
Daniel's eyes widened.
“I never worked for you.”
The caller replied:
“You don't remember.”
A pause.
Then:
“That's what the surgery was for.”
Daniel went completely still.
Mary stared at him.
“Surgery?”
Daniel looked at her.
“I don't remember.”
The caller laughed.
“You were never supposed to remember.”
The line went dead.
Mary felt a chill run down her spine.
“What surgery?”
Daniel couldn't answer.
Then, from the hallway, they heard footsteps.
Slow.
Heavy.
Someone was approaching.
Mary turned.
A figure appeared in the doorway.
Vanessa.
Her face was pale.
She held a gun-shaped object in her trembling hand.
Mary stared.
“Vanessa?”
Vanessa looked at Daniel.
Then at Mary.
“I didn't want this to happen.”
Mary took a step toward her.
“What are you doing?”
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
“I have to tell you something.”
“What?”
Vanessa's voice broke.
“The woman you saw on the screen…”
She looked toward the monitors.
“That wasn't Elena.”
Mary froze.
“What?”
Vanessa shook her head.
“That woman isn't your mother.”
Daniel stared at her.
“Then who is she?”
Vanessa whispered:
“The woman who killed your mother.”
Mary couldn't breathe.
“Where is my mother?”
Vanessa looked directly at her.
“She is standing right behind you.”
Mary slowly turned.
No one was there.
Then the lights went out.
A hand covered her mouth.
A familiar voice whispered into her ear:
“Don't scream.”
Mary's entire body froze.
She knew that voice.
It was Elena.
Her mother.
Alive.
And standing behind her.
But Elena whispered only one sentence:
“Daniel has betrayed you.”
Mary closed her eyes.
May you like
Because somewhere deep inside, she already knew—
the greatest betrayal had not happened yet.
