CHAPTER 2 — THE MAID WHO KNEW TOO MUCH

The doors locked with a sound that nobody in the Moretti mansion had ever heard before.
Not because the locks were unusual.
But because everyone understood what it meant.
Nobody left.
Nobody escaped.
Nobody could quietly walk away and pretend they had not witnessed the collapse of Vanessa Cole’s perfect announcement.
The most powerful people in the city stood frozen beneath the crystal chandeliers.
Judges.
Business owners.
Politicians.
People who were used to controlling rooms.
And now they were waiting for Alessandro Moretti to decide what happened next.
THE MAN WHO DID NOT BELIEVE IN COINCIDENCES
Alessandro stood in the center of the ballroom.
The same place where, only minutes earlier, he had smiled because he believed he was going to become a father.
Now that smile was gone.
His face revealed nothing.
That was what made him frightening.
Anger was easy to understand.
A person shouting showed you what they felt.
Alessandro Moretti did not shout.
He became quiet.
And quiet men were often the most dangerous.
"Nobody touches anything."
His voice carried across the room.
Several guests looked uncomfortable.
One senator laughed nervously.
"Alessandro, surely this is unnecessary. The child was just confused."
Alessandro turned his head.
The senator stopped speaking.
Because he saw something in Alessandro's eyes.
Not rage.
Calculation.
"Perhaps."
Alessandro answered.
"But I do not make decisions based on assumptions."
His gaze moved toward Vanessa.
"I make them based on evidence."
THE WOMAN WHO BECAME THE SUSPECT
Vanessa stood perfectly still.
Too still.
Most people would not have noticed.
But Alessandro noticed everything.
He had spent his entire life surrounded by people who lied.
He knew the signs.
The unnecessary movements.
The delayed answers.
The rehearsed explanations.
Vanessa was doing all three.
"Alessandro..."
Her voice softened.
"I cannot believe you are allowing this."
He looked at her.
"Allowing what?"
"A servant accusing me."
There it was.
The word.
Servant.
Not Maya.
Not the woman who worked in his home for three years.
A servant.
Alessandro's expression changed slightly.
Only slightly.
But Maya noticed.
Because she had worked around him long enough to recognize small things.
He disliked cruelty.
Especially when it was disguised as superiority.
MAYA ROSSI
"Maya."
Her name sounded strange coming from Alessandro's mouth.
Because people like him rarely said names like hers.
She stepped forward.
"Yes, Mr. Moretti."
"Tell me exactly what happened."
The entire room looked at her.
Every eye.
Every judgment.
Maya felt her throat tighten.
This was the moment she had feared.
Not because she was lying.
Because she was telling the truth.
And truth was dangerous when powerful people were involved.
"I was cleaning Miss Cole's suite six weeks ago."
Vanessa immediately interrupted.
"She was snooping."
Alessandro raised one hand.
Vanessa stopped.
"Maya."
She continued.
"I was organizing the closet area. The lower shelves were messy, and there were several garment bags blocking the back."
She swallowed.
"I moved them."
"And?"
"Behind them was a box."
"What kind of box?"
"A white box with small flowers printed on it."
The room became silent again.
Vanessa's face changed.
Only for a second.
But Alessandro saw it.
"What was inside?"
Maya looked down.
She remembered the moment clearly.
The strange weight of the box.
The fear she felt when she realized what it was.
"A silicone pregnancy belly."
A wave of whispers spread.
Vanessa laughed.
But the laugh was weaker this time.
"That is ridiculous."
She looked around.
"Everyone knows pregnant women use support products."
Alessandro looked at her.
"Do they?"
The question was simple.
But it landed heavily.
THE RECEIPT
"Maya."
"Yes?"
"Did you see anything else?"
She hesitated.
Because this was the part that could destroy her.
Not because it was false.
Because it involved evidence she had never meant to reveal.
"There was a receipt."
Vanessa's eyes snapped toward her.
"What?"
Maya continued.
"It was underneath the box."
Alessandro stepped closer.
"What did it say?"
"I don't remember every detail."
Vanessa smiled.
"There you have it."
But Maya finished:
"But I remember the words."
Everyone waited.
"It said..."
She took a breath.
"Silicone pregnancy prosthetic."
The room exploded.
Not loudly.
But emotionally.
Whispers.
Shock.
Disbelief.
The perfect engagement announcement had become a public investigation.
VANESSA'S COUNTERATTACK
Vanessa's tears appeared instantly.
Too instantly.
Maya noticed.
So did Alessandro.
"Alessandro, please."
Vanessa touched his arm.
"Think about this."
She pointed toward Maya.
"She is a struggling woman."
Maya felt those words like a slap.
"She has nothing."
Vanessa continued.
"No family money. No status. No influence."
The guests listened.
Because this was the world Maya knew.
The world where wealthy people could destroy someone simply by reminding everyone who had more.
"Why would you believe her?"
Vanessa whispered.
"Over me?"
Alessandro looked at Maya.
Then at Emma.
Then back at Vanessa.
"Because she has nothing to gain."
The room went quiet.
Vanessa stared at him.
"What?"
"People who create lies usually want something."
Alessandro said.
"Money."
"Power."
"Protection."
He looked at Maya.
"What does she gain from this?"
Nobody answered.
Because the answer was obvious.
Nothing.
EMMA'S SECOND SECRET
Emma tugged Maya's dress.
"Mama."
Maya looked down.
"Not now, sweetheart."
But Emma frowned.
"No."
She pointed toward Vanessa.
"The lady was scared."
Maya froze.
Alessandro heard.
"What did you say?"
Emma looked at him.
"She was scared when she put the pillow away."
Vanessa's face turned pale.
"When was this?"
Alessandro asked gently.
Emma thought.
"After the tall man came."
Everyone looked confused.
"The tall man?"
Emma nodded.
"He was angry."
A silence fell.
Maya felt something cold move through her.
Because she remembered.
A night she had almost forgotten.
A night when she saw someone leaving Vanessa's room.
A man she did not recognize.
THE SECOND PERSON INVOLVED
Alessandro turned toward his security chief.
"Check the cameras."
The man nodded.
"Already doing it."
A few seconds later, he returned.
"Sir."
Alessandro looked at him.
"What?"
"The camera footage from Miss Cole's hallway has been deleted."
The ballroom became silent.
"Deleted?"
"Yes."
"When?"
"Two days ago."
Alessandro's eyes narrowed.
Two days.
Not after the accusation.
Before.
Someone had prepared.
This was no longer about a fake pregnancy.
It was about planning.
MAYA'S FEAR
Alessandro turned back to her.
"You should have told me."
Maya lowered her eyes.
"I know."
"Why didn't you?"
She looked at him.
For the first time that night, Alessandro saw something beyond fear.
Pain.
"Because people like me do not accuse people like her."
The answer surprised him.
"What does that mean?"
Maya gave a small, bitter smile.
"It means if I accuse a powerful woman, everyone asks what I did wrong."
No one spoke.
"Not what she did."
Alessandro stared at her.
And something changed.
Because he understood.
His world had always protected people like Vanessa.
People with names.
Money.
Connections.
But Maya had spent her entire life without those things.
And somehow...
She still told the truth.
THE ORDER
Alessandro looked at his security team.
"Bring me the guest list."
Then:
"Find every person who entered Vanessa's suite in the last two months."
A pause.
"And nobody contacts Vanessa."
The guests exchanged worried looks.
Vanessa stepped closer.
"Alessandro, you cannot seriously believe this woman."
He looked at her.
"I believe evidence."
A cold silence.
"And right now, evidence is the only thing I trust."
THE MESSAGE
As the investigation began, Alessandro's phone vibrated.
One message.
Unknown number.
He opened it.
A photograph.
His expression changed.
Maya noticed.
"What is it?"
Alessandro did not answer.
Because the photograph showed something impossible.
Vanessa.
Three weeks earlier.
Standing outside a private clinic.
With another person.
A man.
A man whose face was partially visible.
But Alessandro recognized him.
Because he knew that man.
Everyone in the Moretti family knew him.
His own cousin.
Lorenzo Moretti.
The room continued moving around him.
But Alessandro heard nothing.
Because suddenly, the lie was bigger than Vanessa.
It was inside his own bloodline.
He looked toward Maya.
Toward Emma.
Then toward the woman who had almost become his wife.
And for the first time that night...
Alessandro Moretti realized something.
The fake heir was only the beginning.
May you like
The real secret was who wanted him to believe it.
