CHAPTER 5 — THE SECRET OF DANIEL ROSSI

For three years, Maya Rossi carried the same question inside her heart.

What really happened to Daniel?

Everyone had given her an answer.

The police.

The company.

The investigators.

The people who came to her house wearing expensive suits and sympathetic expressions.

They all said the same thing.

An accident.

A tragic accident.

A mistake nobody could have prevented.

But Maya had never believed those words.

Because Daniel Rossi was not careless.

He was not reckless.

He was the kind of man who checked a door twice before leaving the house.

The kind of man who read every contract before signing his name.

The kind of man who repaired broken furniture instead of replacing it because he believed everything deserved a second chance.

A man like that did not simply stand beneath a failing structure.

A man like that was placed there.

And now, after three years of silence...

The truth was finally coming back.

THE PHOTOGRAPH

Maya stared at the photograph on Alessandro's desk.

Daniel.

Standing outside Moretti Industries.

Alive.

One day before his death.

Her fingers trembled as she touched the image.

"I don't understand."

Her voice was barely audible.

"He told me he was going to a meeting."

Alessandro looked at her.

"What meeting?"

Maya closed her eyes.

She hated remembering that day.

Because memory was cruel.

It preserved every small detail.

The smell of coffee.

The sound of rain.

The way Daniel kissed Emma's forehead before leaving.

"He said he had information."

Alessandro leaned forward.

"What kind of information?"

"I don't know."

A pause.

"He wouldn't tell me everything."

"Why?"

Maya looked down.

"Because he was scared."

THE LAST CONVERSATION

Three years earlier.

The night before Daniel died.

Maya remembered him sitting at the kitchen table.

The apartment was small.

Their furniture was old.

But it was home.

Daniel held a folder in his hands.

"You need to promise me something."

Maya laughed softly.

"That sounds serious."

"It is."

The smile disappeared from her face.

"What happened?"

Daniel looked toward Emma's crib.

Then back at her.

"If something happens to me..."

"Don't say that."

"Maya."

His voice was serious.

"Listen."

She went quiet.

"Protect Emma."

"I will."

"And don't trust anyone who tells you the Morettis are untouchable."

Maya remembered those words.

Because at the time, they frightened her.

Now...

They terrified her.

THE HIDDEN FILE

Alessandro opened another folder.

"I found this in an old archive."

Maya looked at it.

"What is it?"

"Daniel's investigation."

Inside were pages of notes.

Financial records.

Construction reports.

Photographs.

Names.

Maya slowly turned the pages.

She recognized Daniel's handwriting immediately.

Her eyes filled with tears.

"He kept everything."

"He was building a case."

Alessandro looked through the documents.

Daniel had been investigating Moretti Industries for almost six months.

Not because he wanted money.

Not because he wanted revenge.

Because workers were being placed in dangerous conditions.

Buildings were being approved without proper inspections.

Reports were being changed.

And people were being paid to ignore it.

THE PROJECT HEIR

Then Alessandro found something.

A document hidden between construction files.

A single page.

At the top:

PROJECT HEIR

Maya frowned.

"What is that?"

Alessandro read silently.

His expression changed.

"What?"

He handed it to her.

The document described a private succession plan.

Not a business plan.

A family plan.

A way to guarantee control of the Moretti empire through bloodline and inheritance.

Maya looked confused.

"What does this have to do with Daniel?"

Alessandro continued reading.

Then he saw the name.

Vanessa Cole.

Maya's breathing stopped.

THE FALSE FUTURE

The document revealed something shocking.

Vanessa had not suddenly decided to fake a pregnancy.

The idea had existed long before.

Someone had been planning for a future where Alessandro needed an heir.

A future where emotions could be controlled.

A future where the Moretti empire would remain in the hands of specific people.

Alessandro stared at the page.

"Someone wanted me to have a child."

Maya looked at him.

"Not a child."

She understood before he did.

"A controlled heir."

Silence.

THE FAMILY MEETING

That evening, Alessandro called a family meeting.

Everyone important to the Moretti family gathered.

Including Lorenzo.

The man in the photograph.

The man who had been secretly meeting Vanessa.

Lorenzo entered with confidence.

"Alessandro."

A smile.

"After everything tonight, I assume you have questions."

Alessandro looked at him.

"I have many."

Lorenzo sat down.

"What a dramatic atmosphere."

Nobody laughed.

Because everyone could feel something had changed.

Alessandro placed the photograph on the table.

Lorenzo's expression shifted.

Only briefly.

But enough.

"You know this man."

A statement.

Not a question.

Lorenzo looked at the picture.

"I don't."

Alessandro watched him.

The lie was immediate.

Too immediate.

THE MAN WHO LIED TOO FAST

"I didn't ask if you recognize him."

Alessandro said.

"I asked if you know him."

The room became colder.

Lorenzo leaned back.

"You are accusing your own family based on a photograph?"

"No."

Alessandro placed the document down.

"I am accusing someone based on evidence."

Lorenzo looked at the paper.

And for the first time...

Fear appeared.

VANESSA'S LAST CARD

Vanessa suddenly spoke.

"Enough."

Everyone turned.

She stood near the doorway.

She looked different.

Not the confident woman from the engagement party.

Not the woman beneath the chandeliers.

A woman who knew her secret was slipping away.

"You are making a mistake, Alessandro."

He looked at her.

"Am I?"

She stepped closer.

"You think I am your enemy."

A pause.

"But you don't know what your family has done."

Nobody moved.

Alessandro narrowed his eyes.

"What does that mean?"

Vanessa looked toward Lorenzo.

Then back at Alessandro.

"It means I was never the one who started this."

THE SECRET DANIEL LEFT BEHIND

Later that night, Maya returned home.

Emma was asleep.

The apartment was quiet.

For the first time in years, Maya felt something she had almost forgotten.

Hope.

But hope was dangerous.

Because it made people vulnerable.

She opened Daniel's old box of belongings.

She had not touched it since his death.

Inside were his watch.

His notebook.

A few photographs.

And something she had never seen before.

A small key.

Hidden inside the lining of his jacket.

Her heart raced.

Because Daniel never hid things without a reason.

The key opened a small metal box beneath the floorboard.

Inside was a letter.

Only one page.

Written in Daniel's handwriting.

Maya,

If you found this, then they already know I was looking.

Her hands shook.

The Morettis are not the beginning.

They are only the door.

The person behind them has controlled this city for years.

Do not trust anyone who says they are protecting the family.

They are protecting themselves.

At the bottom of the letter was one final sentence.

The sentence that made Maya stop breathing.

"Alessandro Moretti is not the enemy. He is the next target."

Maya looked at the letter.

Then at the sleeping Emma.

Then at the city outside her window.

Because suddenly she understood.

Daniel had not been investigating the Moretti family.

He had been trying to save them.

And someone had killed him for it.

Across the city, Alessandro stood alone in his office.

The same thought crossed his mind.

The fake pregnancy.

The hidden box.

The deleted cameras.

Daniel's investigation.

They were not separate events.

They were pieces of one plan.

A plan that started before Vanessa ever entered his life.

A plan that involved his family.

May you like

And a plan that was still moving.
