CHAPTER 9 — THE WOMAN WHO STOOD ALONE

Maya Rossi had spent three years learning how to disappear.

She learned how to walk quietly through rooms filled with powerful people.

She learned how to lower her eyes when wealthy guests looked at her as if she were part of the furniture.

She learned how to accept insults disguised as jokes.

She learned that in a world built on money, a person without influence had to be careful.

Very careful.

Because one wrong word could cost a job.

One accusation could destroy a reputation.

One powerful enemy could take away everything.

But Maya had finally reached the point where she was no longer afraid of losing what she had.

Because the truth had already taken everything from her once.

And she had survived.

THE WOMAN IN THE RECORDING

The hidden room beneath Daniel's old apartment remained silent after the video ended.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The final words echoed in everyone's mind.

The person who ordered my death was someone Alessandro trusts more than anyone.

Maya looked at Alessandro.

For the first time since she met him...

She saw uncertainty.

Not weakness.

Not fear.

But a man forced to question everything he believed.

His family.

His memories.

The people closest to him.

"Play it again."

Alessandro's voice was quiet.

The security officer restarted the video.

Daniel appeared again.

The same tired eyes.

The same determination.

But this time, they noticed something.

A reflection behind him.

Someone standing in the doorway.

Someone who had been there when Daniel recorded the message.

The video ended before the person's face appeared.

But Alessandro noticed something else.

A ring.

A family ring.

A Moretti symbol.

THE RING THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

Back at the mansion, Alessandro gathered everyone.

Lorenzo.

Vanessa.

Clara.

The senior employees.

The people who had spent years close to the family.

The atmosphere was different.

Nobody knew who could be trusted.

And that was the most dangerous situation for a powerful family.

Suspicion.

Because once trust disappeared...

Every conversation became a possible betrayal.

Alessandro placed the photograph of the ring on the table.

"This belongs to someone in this room."

Silence.

Lorenzo looked at everyone.

Vanessa looked nervous.

Clara looked afraid.

But Alessandro noticed one person who did not react.

One person who looked almost prepared.

His uncle.

Richard Moretti.

THE UNCLE WHO STAYED IN THE SHADOWS

Richard Moretti had always been considered harmless.

That was his greatest advantage.

He was not loud like Lorenzo.

He was not ambitious like Vanessa.

He preferred to stay behind the scenes.

Giving advice.

Offering opinions.

Appearing loyal.

For years, Alessandro trusted him.

Richard had helped him after his father's death.

He had guided him through his first years leading the company.

He was family.

And that was exactly why Alessandro felt something cold in his chest.

Because Daniel's warning suddenly made sense.

The person closest to you.

The person you never question.

THE ACCUSATION

"Uncle Richard."

Everyone turned.

Richard smiled slightly.

"Alessandro."

"I need to ask you something."

"Of course."

"Where were you the night Daniel Rossi died?"

The room froze.

Richard's smile disappeared.

Only for a second.

But Alessandro saw it.

"I don't remember."

A dangerous answer.

For a man who had spent decades controlling his image.

"You don't remember?"

Richard sighed.

"It was three years ago."

Alessandro stepped closer.

"That is strange."

"Why?"

"Because you remember every other detail about that year."

Silence.

THE WOMAN WHO WAS BLAMED

While the family fought, Maya felt something she had not expected.

Isolation.

Even after discovering the truth...

Even after proving Vanessa lied...

She still felt alone.

Because this was not her world.

These people had lawyers.

Connections.

Power.

She had a small apartment.

A child.

And memories of a husband who never got justice.

She stood outside the mansion that night, watching the lights.

A place where she had worked for years.

A place where she had always felt like an outsider.

Then Alessandro found her.

"You are leaving."

She looked at him.

"I don't belong here."

He frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"It means every person in this house has something to protect."

A pause.

"I only have Emma."

Alessandro became quiet.

Because he understood.

Her greatest strength was also her greatest vulnerability.

Love.

THE QUESTION SHE NEVER ASKED

"Why are you helping me?"

Maya finally asked.

Alessandro looked surprised.

"Because Daniel deserves justice."

"That's not the only reason."

A long silence.

Then he answered honestly.

"Because you were the only person in that room who had nothing to gain by telling the truth."

Maya looked away.

"I was scared."

"I know."

"I thought they would destroy me."

Alessandro looked at her.

"But you spoke anyway."

A pause.

"That is not weakness, Maya."

"It is courage."

THE ATTACK

The moment almost felt peaceful.

Until the sound of breaking glass came from inside the mansion.

Security alarms activated.

Everyone moved immediately.

Alessandro grabbed Maya's arm.

"Stay behind me."

They rushed inside.

The investigation room had been destroyed.

Documents scattered everywhere.

The hidden video file was missing.

And on the wall...

Written in black ink:

STOP DIGGING.

Maya stared.

Because beneath the message was something else.

A small drawing.

A child's drawing.

A house.

A tree.

Three people holding hands.

The same picture Emma had drawn.

THE THREAT AGAINST EMMA

Maya's face went pale.

"They know about her."

Alessandro immediately understood.

This was no longer about money.

This was no longer about the empire.

They were attacking the people who could expose them.

He turned toward security.

"Find whoever entered this house."

Then his phone rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

He answered.

No voice this time.

Only a recording.

Daniel's voice.

But not the old message.

A new one.

"If you are hearing this..."

A pause.

"Then they found Maya."

Maya froze.

Alessandro looked at her.

Daniel continued.

"Protect her."

The message crackled.

"And protect Emma."

A pause.

"Because the person behind everything knows the truth about her birth."

The recording ended.

THE SECRET OF EMMA

Nobody spoke.

Maya felt the world stop.

"What did he mean?"

Alessandro looked at her.

A thousand questions appeared.

Why would Daniel mention Emma?

What truth?

What did someone know?

Then Clara whispered:

"No..."

Everyone turned.

The old housekeeper looked terrified.

"You don't understand."

Alessandro stepped forward.

"Understand what?"

Clara's hands trembled.

"Emma is not just a witness."

Maya's heart began racing.

"What are you saying?"

Clara looked at the little girl's photograph on the table.

Then whispered:

"Daniel discovered something about her before he died."

Silence.

"What?"

Clara swallowed.

"Something the Moretti family has been hiding for years."

Maya felt the ground disappear beneath her.

For three years, she thought Daniel died because he uncovered corruption.

Now she realized something worse.

Daniel had discovered the truth about their daughter.

And someone had killed him to keep it hidden.

Across the city, inside a dark office, someone watched the security footage of Maya and Emma.

The person smiled.

"Finally."

The voice was calm.

"Now she knows enough to become dangerous."

A hand opened a drawer.

Inside was another file.

A birth certificate.

A photograph.

And one name circled in red.

May you like

EMMA ROSSI-MORETTI.
