CHAPTER 3 — THE CLOSET BEHIND THE LIE

The closet was supposed to be ordinary.

A place filled with expensive dresses.

Designer shoes.

Jewelry worth more than most people earned in a lifetime.

A place where Vanessa Cole kept the image she wanted the world to see.

Perfect.

Elegant.

Untouchable.

But behind those clothes...

Behind the silk and diamonds...

Was the truth.

And Alessandro Moretti was about to open the door.

THE SEARCH

The ballroom remained locked.

The guests were no longer celebrating.

They were waiting.

Waiting to see whether the most powerful family in the city had been humiliated by a lie.

Alessandro walked through the mansion with his security team behind him.

Maya followed several steps away.

She did not know why he allowed her to come.

Maybe because she was the only person who had seen the beginning of the truth.

Maybe because he understood something she had learned long ago.

The smallest details were often the ones people ignored.

And ignored details were where secrets lived.

Emma held Maya's hand tightly.

The little girl was tired.

The excitement had disappeared.

She only wanted her bed.

But every few seconds, she looked at Alessandro.

As if trying to understand why the serious man everyone feared was suddenly listening to her.

Children were strange that way.

They did not see power.

They saw people.

THE ROOM OF THE FUTURE

Vanessa's private suite occupied the entire east wing.

A place reserved for the future Mrs. Moretti.

The room itself looked like a magazine cover.

White furniture.

Golden decorations.

Fresh flowers replaced every morning.

Everything carefully arranged.

Everything controlled.

Alessandro stepped inside.

The air felt different.

Not because anything was obviously wrong.

Because everything was too perfect.

People who were hiding something often created perfection around it.

A beautiful painting could hide a crack in the wall.

A perfect smile could hide a lie.

A perfect room could hide a secret.

"Search everything."

Alessandro ordered.

The security team moved immediately.

Drawers.

Shelves.

Cabinets.

Vanessa stood at the doorway.

"You are actually doing this?"

Her voice was wounded.

"After everything we shared?"

Alessandro did not look at her.

"I am investigating."

"No."

She shook her head.

"You are accusing me."

Finally, he looked at her.

"If you are innocent, evidence will prove it."

The words hurt her.

Because they were reasonable.

And reasonable was harder to fight than anger.

THE CLOSET

The closet was larger than Maya's entire apartment.

Rows of clothing.

Shoes arranged by color.

Jewelry cases displayed like museum pieces.

The security officer checked the shelves.

"Nothing."

Another checked the drawers.

"Nothing unusual."

Vanessa smiled slightly.

"There."

She looked at Alessandro.

"Are you satisfied?"

But Alessandro did not answer.

Because he was watching Maya.

She stood near the doorway.

Staring at the back wall.

Not the clothes.

Not the shelves.

The wall.

"Maya."

She looked at him.

"Where exactly did you find the box?"

Everyone turned.

She stepped forward slowly.

"Behind the garment bags."

She pointed.

"Near the bottom shelf."

The security team moved there.

They removed several dresses.

Nothing.

Vanessa crossed her arms.

"I think we have wasted enough time."

Then Emma spoke.

"Mama."

Everyone stopped.

"What?"

Emma pointed.

"Not there."

She walked closer.

"The flower box was here."

She touched the wall.

The adults exchanged looks.

Vanessa laughed.

"She is three years old."

But Alessandro did not laugh.

He looked at the wall.

Because he noticed something.

A small difference.

The wallpaper pattern.

One section did not match perfectly.

A mistake.

A tiny mistake.

The kind only someone searching for hidden things would notice.

"Open it."

The security officer examined the wall.

A hidden panel.

Behind it was a narrow storage space.

Everyone became silent.

THE BOX THAT DISAPPEARED

Inside was empty.

Nothing.

No pregnancy belly.

No receipt.

No evidence.

Vanessa smiled.

"Interesting."

She looked at Maya.

"Someone must have planted something and removed it."

Maya felt her heart sink.

Because this was exactly what she feared.

The truth had been there.

But someone had erased it.

Alessandro looked at the empty space.

His expression remained calm.

But inside, his mind was moving quickly.

Someone knew.

Someone had removed the evidence.

Which meant someone was watching.

THE SECOND SECRET

The security officer continued searching.

Then he noticed something.

"Sir."

Alessandro turned.

The officer held a small object.

A broken piece of plastic.

"What is that?"

"A piece from a storage container."

Maya stepped closer.

She recognized it immediately.

"The flower pattern."

Everyone looked at her.

She pointed.

"That was from the box."

The evidence was not gone.

Not completely.

Someone had removed the main item.

But they missed a piece.

Alessandro took it.

Carefully.

Like it was something dangerous.

Because it was.

THE PHONE CALL

Then his phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone watched as he answered.

"Moretti."

A distorted voice spoke.

"You are looking in the wrong place."

Alessandro's eyes narrowed.

"Who is this?"

No answer.

Only:

"You think Vanessa is the problem."

A pause.

"She is only the beginning."

The call ended.

The room became silent.

VANESSA'S LAST DEFENSE

Vanessa stepped forward.

"Alessandro."

Her voice was softer now.

"I know you are angry."

He looked at her.

"I am not angry."

That frightened her more.

"I am disappointed."

A crack appeared in her perfect expression.

"I love you."

The words came quickly.

Desperately.

"Everything I did was because I wanted a future with you."

Alessandro stared at her.

"Did you?"

She froze.

"Or did you want my future?"

The question destroyed her confidence for a moment.

Because she had no answer.

MAYA'S WARNING

Later that night, after the guests were finally released, Maya prepared to leave.

She carried Emma toward the servant entrance.

But Alessandro stopped her.

"Maya."

She turned.

"Yes?"

He held the broken piece of the box.

"You were telling the truth."

It was not a question.

Maya looked away.

"I wish I wasn't."

He studied her.

"Why?"

"Because people like Vanessa don't lose easily."

Alessandro was quiet.

"You are afraid."

Maya smiled sadly.

"I am realistic."

A pause.

"Mr. Moretti, people like me don't survive fights against people like her."

Alessandro looked at Emma.

Then back at Maya.

"Maybe that was true before."

She looked surprised.

"But not anymore."

THE FILE

After Maya left, Alessandro returned to his office.

On his desk was a folder.

Delivered while he was investigating the closet.

No sender.

No explanation.

Inside was one document.

A photograph.

And a message.

YOU ARE SEARCHING FOR THE FALSE HEIR.

BUT YOU SHOULD ASK WHO CREATED THE NEED FOR ONE.

Alessandro looked at the photograph.

His expression changed.

Because the picture showed Vanessa.

But not alone.

Standing beside her was the man from the previous photo.

Lorenzo Moretti.

And beneath the image was a date.

Three months before Vanessa announced her pregnancy.

Alessandro slowly closed the file.

The lie was no longer just Vanessa's.

It was a plan.

A plan created by someone who knew his family.

Someone who knew his weaknesses.

Someone close enough to destroy him.

And somewhere inside the Moretti mansion...

A person smiled.

May you like

Because Alessandro Moretti had finally started looking in the right direction.
