Chapter 7 — The Hotel That Belonged to Her

Chapter 7 — The Hotel That Belonged to Her

At 7:03 a.m., Charlotte Vale walked into the Solmere Hotel for the second time.

The first time, she had been dragged across the marble floor.

The second time, she returned as its legal owner.

She wore a black tailored suit.

No jewelry.

No designer labels.

No attempt to impress anyone.

She didn't need to.

The original ownership papers were inside a secure case in her hand.

Behind her walked Edward Reed, Samuel Reed, Mr. Bennett, and three independent attorneys.

Daniel remained several steps behind.

Charlotte had not spoken to him since the cemetery.

She still remembered her father's warning.

Don't trust Daniel.

But she also remembered Daniel saving her life more than once.

The problem was no longer deciding whether he was good or bad.

The problem was discovering whose side he was really on.

The hotel lobby became silent the moment she entered.

Employees stared.

Guests whispered.

Security guards froze.

Someone dropped a glass.

Charlotte stopped in the center of the lobby.

The same marble floor.

The same crystal chandeliers.

The same staircase where Vivienne had humiliated her.

Charlotte looked down at the spot where her blood had stained the marble.

Then she looked up.

“Who is the manager?”

A nervous man stepped forward.

“I am.”

“Your name?”

“Lucas Bennett.”

Charlotte studied him.

“Mr. Bennett.”

“Yes, ma'am.”

“Who authorized the removal of my name from the ownership registry?”

His face went pale.

“I don't know.”

“Who authorized the security lockdown yesterday?”

“I was instructed by Ms. Hart.”

“Vivienne?”

“Yes.”

Charlotte nodded.

“Then call her.”

The manager swallowed.

“She isn't here.”

“She will be.”

At 7:16 a.m., every screen in the lobby suddenly switched on.

Vivienne appeared.

She was sitting behind a desk.

Perfect hair.

Perfect makeup.

Perfect smile.

“Charlotte.”

Charlotte looked at the screen.

“Vivienne.”

“Welcome home.”

“This is my hotel.”

Vivienne laughed.

“Technically.”

Charlotte smiled.

“No.”

She lifted the ownership papers.

“Legally.”

The lobby went silent.

Vivienne's smile disappeared.

“You don't understand the legal situation.”

“I understand it better than you.”

“You haven't been formally recognized by the board.”

“I don't need the board's permission.”

“You're forgetting the emergency control clause.”

Charlotte nodded.

“I read it.”

“Then you know you have seventy-two hours.”

“I do.”

“Which means you have not yet assumed control.”

Charlotte looked at the cameras.

“Actually…”

She handed the document to Edward.

He opened it.

“The beneficiary has fulfilled the first requirement.”

Vivienne frowned.

“What?”

Edward smiled.

“She has physically entered the primary headquarters and presented the original ownership documents to the company's legal representative.”

Vivienne's expression changed.

“The board will dispute that.”

“They can.”

Edward closed the folder.

“But until a court rules otherwise, the controlling ownership remains with Charlotte Vale.”

Charlotte looked around the lobby.

“Effective immediately, this hotel is under new management.”

Vivienne stared.

“You can't do this.”

Charlotte smiled.

“I just did.”

Within ten minutes, the hotel was in chaos.

Security access was changed.

Executive passwords were frozen.

Board members received emergency legal notices.

The accounting department was ordered to preserve all records.

Every financial transaction above $50,000 required independent review.

And every employee who had been involved in Charlotte's removal from the property was suspended pending investigation.

The hotel manager stood beside Charlotte.

“What should we do about Ms. Hart?”

Charlotte looked at the screen.

“Remove her access.”

Vivienne's voice erupted.

“You can't!”

Charlotte calmly replied:

“Watch me.”

The screen went black.

For the first time in years, Vivienne Hart had been disconnected from something she believed belonged to her.

Charlotte turned toward the lobby.

Nobody spoke.

She looked at the employees.

“I know some of you were told I was a fraud.”

Silence.

“I know some of you were told I was unstable.”

Nobody moved.

“I know some of you were told I had no legal claim to this building.”

Charlotte looked at the ownership papers.

“That ends today.”

A few employees exchanged glances.

Charlotte continued.

“I am not here to punish people who were following orders.”

Her eyes hardened.

“But anyone who helped steal from this company, falsify records, or harm my family will be investigated.”

The manager nodded.

Charlotte looked toward the elevators.

“And I want every camera recording from the last twelve months preserved.”

The manager hesitated.

“All of them?”

“All.”

“Even deleted footage?”

“Especially deleted footage.”

On the thirty-second floor, the board was already gathering.

Adrian arrived first.

Then Vivienne.

Then several directors.

Thomas's chair remained empty.

Nobody mentioned his absence.

Adrian slammed a folder onto the table.

“This is ridiculous.”

Vivienne looked at him.

“You said she couldn't get the original papers.”

“She wasn't supposed to.”

“You failed.”

Adrian's face hardened.

“You're the one who allowed her into the hotel.”

“I didn't know she had them.”

“You were supposed to stop her.”

Vivienne stood.

“Don't blame me for your mistakes.”

Adrian stepped closer.

“You promised me control.”

“I promised you what I needed you to believe.”

He stared.

“What does that mean?”

Vivienne smiled.

“It means our arrangement has changed.”

Adrian's face went pale.

“You wouldn't.”

“I already did.”

The doors opened.

Charlotte walked inside.

The room fell silent.

Adrian stared at her.

For several seconds, he looked as if he were seeing a ghost.

Charlotte took the empty seat at the head of the table.

Her mother's seat.

The chair nobody had touched since Eleanor disappeared.

She placed the ownership papers in front of her.

Then looked around.

“Let's begin.”

One director laughed nervously.

“This is highly irregular.”

Charlotte looked at him.

“No.”

She opened the folder.

“This is exactly what should have happened twenty-two years ago.”

Adrian stood.

“You can't simply walk in here and take control.”

Charlotte looked at him.

“Why not?”

“Because the board has authority.”

“Over what?”

He hesitated.

“Solmere.”

Charlotte smiled.

“Show me.”

“What?”

“Show me the document granting the board ownership.”

Adrian said nothing.

Charlotte looked at the directors.

“Anyone?”

Silence.

Edward stepped forward.

“There is no such document.”

Charlotte nodded.

“Exactly.”

Adrian's face reddened.

“This isn't over.”

“No.”

Charlotte smiled.

“It isn't.”

Then the conference room doors opened again.

Daniel walked in.

Charlotte's expression changed.

He carried a file.

“Charlotte.”

She looked at him.

“What?”

“I found something.”

Adrian immediately stepped backward.

Daniel placed the file on the table.

“Security footage.”

Charlotte opened it.

The first recording showed Vivienne entering the hotel the night Charlotte had been dragged out.

The second showed Adrian meeting her.

The third showed something worse.

Daniel himself.

He was standing outside the private elevator.

Talking to someone.

Charlotte paused the footage.

“Who is that?”

Daniel stared.

“Your father.”

Charlotte's heart stopped.

The man standing beside Daniel was older than the photograph.

But unmistakable.

Her father.

Alive.

Charlotte looked at Daniel.

“When was this?”

“Six weeks ago.”

Adrian suddenly stood.

“You forged this.”

Daniel looked at him.

“No.”

Adrian's face changed.

Daniel continued.

“Your father came to the hotel six weeks ago.”

Charlotte stared.

“Why?”

“To meet your mother.”

The room went silent.

Charlotte's voice became quiet.

“My mother was alive six weeks ago?”

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.”

“Then why didn't she come home?”

“Because she was afraid.”

“Of whom?”

Daniel looked at Adrian.

“Of him.”

Everyone turned.

Adrian's face went white.

Charlotte stared.

“You threatened my mother.”

Adrian shook his head.

“No.”

Daniel placed another document on the table.

“Your mother recorded the conversation.”

Charlotte opened it.

A recording began.

Adrian's voice filled the room.

“You can't stop this.”

Eleanor's voice answered:

“You won't get Charlotte's inheritance.”

“You're going to give it to me.”

“Never.”

Adrian laughed.

“Then Charlotte dies.”

Charlotte froze.

Her hands went cold.

The recording continued.

Eleanor whispered:

“You'd kill your own family?”

Adrian replied:

“She isn't family.”

Charlotte closed her eyes.

The room was silent.

Adrian began backing toward the door.

Charlotte looked up.

“You threatened me.”

“No.”

“You threatened my mother.”

“No.”

“You tried to steal my inheritance.”

“No.”

“You told the board I was mentally unstable.”

“I was protecting the company.”

Charlotte stood.

“No.”

She looked at him.

“You were protecting yourself.”

Adrian turned to run.

Security officers entered.

They grabbed him.

He struggled.

“Charlotte!”

She didn't move.

“Listen to me!”

She watched him being dragged away.

“You don't understand!”

Charlotte's voice was calm.

“I understand everything now.”

The doors closed behind him.

Three hours later, Charlotte stood inside the executive office.

It had belonged to her mother.

She looked through the windows at the city.

Solmere belonged to her.

The hotel belonged to her.

The company belonged to her.

But none of it felt like victory.

Not yet.

Her mother was alive.

Her father was alive.

Adrian was under arrest.

Vivienne had disappeared.

And Richard Hale was still free.

The war wasn't over.

Her phone rang.

Charlotte answered.

“Hello?”

A man's voice whispered:

“Your father is in danger.”

Charlotte's heart stopped.

“Who is this?”

“Hale knows where he is.”

“Where?”

“Your hotel.”

Charlotte looked around.

“What?”

“He's inside.”

Charlotte turned toward the door.

Every light on the floor suddenly went out.

The voice continued:

“Don't trust your security team.”

Charlotte's blood ran cold.

Then the call ended.

A second later, the fire alarm began screaming.

Employees ran through the corridors.

Smoke appeared beneath the office door.

Charlotte grabbed the ownership papers.

She opened the door.

The hallway was filling with smoke.

Daniel appeared at the end.

“Charlotte!”

She ran toward him.

“What's happening?”

“Fire.”

“Where?”

“Thirty-second floor.”

“My mother?”

Daniel froze.

Charlotte understood immediately.

“She is here.”

“No.”

“Daniel!”

He grabbed her arm.

“Your mother is in the building.”

Charlotte pulled away.

“Take me to her.”

“You can't.”

“She is my mother.”

Daniel looked at the smoke.

Then at Charlotte.

“Then we have to move.”

They ran toward the private elevator.

Behind them, flames began climbing the walls.

Charlotte looked back once.

The hotel she had just reclaimed was burning.

Someone had started the fire deliberately.

And as the elevator doors closed, she saw a figure standing at the far end of the corridor.

A woman in a white dress.

Vivienne.

Watching.

Smiling.

Charlotte's blood ran cold.

Vivienne raised one hand.

Inside it was a small silver key.

The same key Charlotte had found in her mother's grave.

Charlotte stared.

“How does she have that?”

Daniel looked at her.

His face changed.

“She doesn't.”

Charlotte looked again.

The elevator doors closed.

Daniel whispered:

“That's not Vivienne.”

Charlotte's heart stopped.

“Then who is it?”

He looked at her.

“Your mother.”

The elevator began descending.

And Charlotte finally understood.

The fire wasn't meant to destroy the hotel.

It was meant to force Eleanor Vale out of hiding.

Because someone had finally discovered the truth.

The woman Charlotte had spent twenty-two years believing was dead was not simply alive.

May you like

She had been inside Solmere all along.

And she had been waiting for Charlotte to take back what was hers.
