Chapter 9 — The Brother Who Betrayed Her

Chapter 9 — The Brother Who Betrayed Her
Charlotte reached the rooftop at 12:41 a.m.
The wind was violent.
Rain swept across the helipad.
Below her, the city glittered beneath a blanket of darkness.
She stood alone.
Exactly as the message had demanded.
Her mother had begged her not to come.
Daniel had insisted on following her.
Charlotte had refused both.
She needed one answer.
One truth.
One explanation for twenty-two years of lies.
Then the rooftop door opened.
Charlotte turned.
A man stepped into the rain.
Gray hair.
Dark coat.
A face older than the one in her childhood memories.
But unmistakable.
Her father.
Gabriel Vale.
Charlotte couldn't breathe.
For several seconds, neither moved.
Then Gabriel said the words she had dreamed of hearing since she was six.
“Charlotte.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Dad.”
He took one step toward her.
She stepped backward.
“No.”
Gabriel stopped.
“You're afraid of me.”
“You should be dead.”
“I know.”
“You let me believe you were dead.”
“I had no choice.”
Charlotte laughed bitterly.
“That's what everyone says.”
She wiped her eyes.
“My mother said it.”
“Your mother was protecting you.”
“She said you ordered her death.”
Gabriel's face changed.
“She told you that?”
“I saw the footage.”
He closed his eyes.
“Then you've seen only part of it.”
Charlotte's voice shook.
“Did you order my mother's death?”
“No.”
“Did you order your own disappearance?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Gabriel looked toward the city.
“Because I had discovered who was really controlling Solmere.”
“Richard Hale?”
“No.”
“Then who?”
Gabriel looked at her.
“Your uncle.”
Charlotte froze.
“Thomas?”
“Thomas was only a messenger.”
“Then who?”
Gabriel whispered:
“Your grandfather.”
Charlotte stared at him.
“My grandfather died before I was born.”
“No.”
Her blood turned cold.
“What?”
“He disappeared.”
“Why?”
“Because he built the empire on something that was never supposed to be discovered.”
Gabriel stepped closer.
“Solmere wasn't originally a hotel company.”
Charlotte said nothing.
“It began as a private financial network.”
“For whom?”
“Governments.”
“Banks?”
“People who needed money moved without questions.”
Charlotte's stomach tightened.
“Money laundering.”
Gabriel nodded.
“And your grandfather controlled it.”
Charlotte shook her head.
“No.”
“He built accounts across countries.”
“No.”
“He bought politicians.”
“No.”
“He owned judges.”
Charlotte stared.
“You're lying.”
“I wish I were.”
Gabriel reached into his coat.
He pulled out an old ledger.
Charlotte recognized the handwriting.
Her grandfather's.
She opened it.
Names.
Dates.
Amounts.
Payments.
The first page carried a single title.
SOLMERE PRIVATE OPERATIONS
Charlotte looked up.
“How did you get this?”
“Your mother found it.”
“And then?”
“She wanted to expose everything.”
“You stopped her.”
“No.”
Gabriel's voice cracked.
“I tried to help her.”
Charlotte remembered the footage.
“You were there.”
“Yes.”
“You knew she was going to be attacked.”
“Yes.”
“And you walked away.”
Gabriel closed his eyes.
“I was trying to save you.”
Charlotte shook her head.
“You keep using me as an excuse.”
“I was six years old.”
“You were six.”
“You had no idea what they were capable of.”
“I know what you were capable of.”
Gabriel looked at her.
Charlotte's voice became colder.
“You abandoned me.”
For several seconds, the only sound was rain.
Then Gabriel spoke.
“I didn't abandon you.”
“You disappeared.”
“I was captured.”
“By Hale?”
“No.”
“By Thomas?”
“No.”
“Then who?”
Gabriel looked at the ledger.
“Your own family.”
Charlotte stared.
“Who?”
“Your grandfather ordered my disappearance.”
“Why?”
“Because I wanted to expose him.”
Charlotte sat down on the edge of the helipad.
Her entire childhood seemed to be collapsing.
“My mother knew?”
“Yes.”
“She helped you?”
“Yes.”
“Then why did she tell me you were dead?”
“Because your grandfather threatened to kill you.”
Charlotte's voice broke.
“So she lied.”
“Yes.”
“To protect me.”
“Yes.”
Charlotte laughed through her tears.
“Everyone lied to protect me.”
Gabriel sat beside her.
“That was the problem.”
“What?”
“They protected you from the truth until the truth became impossible to escape.”
Charlotte looked at him.
“Then why are you here now?”
“Because it's time.”
“For what?”
“To finish what your mother started.”
Gabriel opened the ledger.
“There is one final account.”
Charlotte frowned.
“What account?”
“An account your grandfather created.”
“Where?”
“Under your name.”
She stared.
“My name?”
“Yes.”
“What is in it?”
“Everything.”
Gabriel looked at her.
“Every illegal payment.”
“Every bribe.”
“Every secret transaction.”
“Every person Solmere ever paid.”
Charlotte's breathing quickened.
“And my mother hid it?”
“She tried.”
“Where?”
Gabriel looked toward the hotel.
“Beneath the building.”
Charlotte's eyes widened.
“The Level Zero archive.”
“Yes.”
“We already found it.”
Gabriel shook his head.
“You found the records.”
“Then what is left?”
“The account.”
Charlotte didn't understand.
Gabriel leaned closer.
“The money was never transferred into ordinary accounts.”
“Where did it go?”
“Into a trust.”
“Whose?”
“Yours.”
Charlotte froze.
“My inheritance?”
“No.”
He looked at her.
“Your ransom.”
Charlotte stood.
“What does that mean?”
Gabriel's face became grim.
“When your grandfather realized the empire was collapsing, he created a final contingency.”
“A contingency?”
“If anyone tried to expose Solmere, the trust would activate.”
“What happens when it activates?”
“Every hidden asset becomes legally controlled by the beneficiary.”
Charlotte stared.
“Me.”
“Yes.”
“And that's why they want me dead.”
“Yes.”
“Because whoever controls me controls the money.”
Gabriel nodded.
Charlotte looked at the ledger.
“How much?”
Gabriel didn't answer.
“How much money is in the trust?”
“Enough to destroy every person who has ever touched Solmere.”
A gunshot cracked across the rooftop.
Gabriel grabbed Charlotte.
They dropped behind a concrete barrier.
Another shot.
Daniel's voice came through Charlotte's phone.
“Charlotte!”
She answered.
“I'm here.”
“Get down!”
Charlotte looked across the roof.
A sniper was positioned on a neighboring building.
Daniel appeared through the rooftop door.
He fired toward the sniper.
The sniper disappeared.
Daniel ran toward them.
Gabriel immediately raised his weapon.
Daniel raised his.
Charlotte stepped between them.
“Stop!”
Daniel stared at Gabriel.
“You.”
Gabriel looked at him.
“Daniel.”
“You should be dead.”
“So should you.”
Charlotte looked between them.
“You know each other.”
Daniel's jaw tightened.
“Yes.”
“How?”
Gabriel answered.
“He worked for me.”
Charlotte looked at Daniel.
“What?”
Daniel lowered his weapon.
“I was your father's security chief.”
Charlotte stared.
“Then why did you work for Hale?”
“I didn't.”
“But the footage—”
“I infiltrated Hale's organization.”
“To protect my mother?”
“Yes.”
Charlotte shook her head.
“Then why did you let her get shot?”
Daniel looked away.
“Because the bullet wasn't real.”
Charlotte froze.
“What?”
Daniel looked at Gabriel.
“Tell her.”
Gabriel nodded.
“Your mother was never shot.”
Charlotte's mind raced.
“The footage.”
“Was staged.”
“The blood?”
“Fake.”
“The death?”
“Fake.”
Charlotte looked at Daniel.
“Then why did everyone believe she died?”
“Because Hale needed to believe it.”
Gabriel continued:
“We needed him to stop looking for her.”
Charlotte looked toward the city.
Her mother had been alive.
Her father had been alive.
And both had allowed her to grieve alone for years.
She turned back.
“You both lied to me.”
Gabriel's expression broke.
“We did.”
Daniel lowered his head.
“We were wrong.”
Charlotte's eyes filled with tears.
“You don't get to decide what I can handle anymore.”
Neither man spoke.
She continued.
“You don't get to disappear.”
“You don't get to fake deaths.”
“You don't get to manipulate my life.”
“You don't get to call it protection.”
Gabriel nodded.
“You're right.”
Charlotte stared at him.
“For the first time, I'm making my own decisions.”
Then Charlotte noticed something.
The ledger.
One page had been folded.
She opened it.
At the bottom was a handwritten note.
If Charlotte discovers the truth, she must choose between the Vale family and the Solmere family.
Charlotte frowned.
“What does this mean?”
Gabriel looked at it.
His face changed.
“I don't know.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“There's more.”
He pointed to a second line.
The person she trusts most will decide which empire survives.
Charlotte stared.
“Who?”
Gabriel looked at Daniel.
Daniel looked at Gabriel.
Neither answered.
Then Charlotte's phone rang.
Her mother's number.
She answered.
“Mom?”
No response.
Then a man's voice.
Richard Hale.
“Good evening, Charlotte.”
Her blood ran cold.
“Where is my mother?”
“She is safe.”
“What do you want?”
“You.”
“Why?”
“Because your father has lied to you.”
Gabriel reached for the phone.
Charlotte moved away.
Hale continued.
“He didn't come to the hotel to save your mother.”
Charlotte looked at Gabriel.
“He came to steal from her.”
Gabriel shook his head.
“Don't listen.”
Hale laughed.
“Ask him about the trust.”
Charlotte's heart stopped.
“What trust?”
Gabriel closed his eyes.
Hale continued:
“The trust belongs to your grandfather.”
Charlotte looked at Gabriel.
“Tell me he's lying.”
Gabriel said nothing.
Hale laughed softly.
“Your father didn't protect you.”
“He built the trap.”
The call ended.
Charlotte stared at Gabriel.
“Is that true?”
He looked at her.
“Yes.”
Her heart sank.
“What did you do?”
Gabriel whispered:
“I created the trust.”
Charlotte stepped backward.
“You?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I knew one day everything would collapse.”
“And you put everything in my name.”
“Yes.”
“Without telling me.”
“Yes.”
Charlotte shook her head.
“You didn't protect me.”
Gabriel's voice broke.
“I gave you the power to destroy us.”
Suddenly, alarms sounded inside the hotel.
Daniel looked toward the rooftop door.
“We have a problem.”
Charlotte turned.
“What?”
“Someone has breached Level Zero.”
Gabriel's expression changed.
“Hale.”
Daniel nodded.
“He's going for the trust records.”
Charlotte looked at her father.
“What happens if he gets them?”
“He gains access to the money.”
“How?”
“Through you.”
Charlotte froze.
“How can he access anything through me?”
Gabriel looked at her.
“Because the trust has one final condition.”
“What?”
“The beneficiary must voluntarily transfer control.”
Charlotte understood.
“He needs me to sign.”
“Yes.”
“And if I refuse?”
“He can't touch it.”
A strange calm settled over Charlotte.
For the first time, she wasn't afraid.
She looked toward the hotel.
Then at her father.
Then Daniel.
“Then let's make him come to me.”
Daniel frowned.
“What are you planning?”
Charlotte smiled.
“The same thing they did to me.”
She picked up the ledger.
“I'm going to let him think I'm powerless.”
At 2:18 a.m., every major financial news network received an anonymous document.
A single statement.
CHARLOTTE VALE HAS AGREED TO SURRENDER CONTROL OF THE SOLMERE TRUST.
Markets immediately reacted.
Solmere shares crashed.
Investors panicked.
Richard Hale saw the announcement.
And smiled.
He called Charlotte.
She answered.
“You wanted me.”
“Yes.”
“You wanted the trust.”
“Yes.”
“You want me to sign it over.”
“Yes.”
“Then come to the hotel.”
“I will.”
“Alone.”
Hale laughed.
“You're finally learning.”
Charlotte looked toward the glass doors.
“I'm waiting.”
The call ended.
Daniel stared at her.
“You just invited him into a trap.”
Charlotte nodded.
“Yes.”
Gabriel looked worried.
“What if he realizes?”
“He won't.”
“How do you know?”
Charlotte looked at the security monitors.
“Because he thinks I'm the same woman he dragged across the lobby.”
She smiled.
“But I'm not.”
Thirty minutes later, the hotel doors opened.
Richard Hale entered.
Behind him were six armed men.
Charlotte stood alone in the center of the lobby.
The same marble floor.
The same chandeliers.
The same place where she had once been humiliated.
Hale walked toward her.
“You've finally understood.”
Charlotte smiled.
“No.”
She looked around.
“I finally understood something else.”
“What?”
“This hotel was never yours.”
Hale stopped.
Charlotte raised the original ownership papers.
“It was never Adrian's.”
“It was never Vivienne's.”
“It was never your family's.”
She looked directly into his eyes.
“It was mine.”
Security doors slammed shut.
Every entrance locked.
The lights came on.
Hundreds of security monitors activated.
Hale looked around.
Charlotte smiled.
“Welcome to my hotel.”
Then every screen displayed the same image.
The security footage.
The secret accounts.
The recordings.
The names.
Everything.
Hale's face went white.
Charlotte stepped closer.
“You wanted the truth?”
She held up the ledger.
“Now the whole world gets it.”
Hale stared at her.
“You wouldn't dare.”
Charlotte smiled.
“I already did.”
Behind him, police officers flooded the lobby.
Hale turned.
His men dropped their weapons.
Charlotte watched as the most powerful man in Solmere finally realized the truth.
He had walked into the one place he could never control.
The hotel belonged to Charlotte.
The evidence belonged to Charlotte.
And now…
the truth belonged to everyone.
But as Hale was placed in handcuffs, he leaned toward Charlotte and whispered:
“You still don't know what your father did.”
Charlotte's smile disappeared.
“What?”
Hale looked toward Gabriel.
“Ask him who killed your grandfather.”
Then he was taken away.
Charlotte turned slowly.
Her father stood across the lobby.
His face was pale.
Charlotte stared at him.
“Dad…”
Gabriel said nothing.
She stepped closer.
“Who killed Grandpa?”
Gabriel closed his eyes.
May you like
And for the first time since returning to her life…
he looked truly afraid.
