Chapter 8 — The Security Footage Nobody Could Erase

Chapter 8 — The Security Footage Nobody Could Erase
The elevator stopped between floors.
Charlotte grabbed the railing.
“What happened?”
Daniel looked at the control panel.
“Power failure.”
Smoke began creeping through the ventilation system.
Charlotte's heart raced.
“My mother is upstairs.”
“I know.”
“We have to get back.”
Daniel pulled open the emergency panel.
“There is another way.”
He reached inside and pressed a hidden switch.
The elevator jolted.
A maintenance hatch opened above them.
Charlotte looked up.
“You expect me to climb through that?”
“If you want to survive.”
She didn't hesitate.
Daniel climbed first.
Charlotte followed.
They crawled through the narrow maintenance shaft.
Smoke burned her eyes.
Behind them, the hotel alarms continued screaming.
Then Charlotte heard something.
A woman's voice.
Faint.
Coming through the ventilation system.
“Charlotte!”
She stopped.
“Mom?”
Daniel froze.
Again.
“Charlotte!”
Her mother's voice.
Alive.
Terrified.
Charlotte crawled faster.
“Mom!”
They reached a maintenance platform.
A metal door stood ahead.
Daniel kicked it open.
They entered the thirty-second floor.
The hallway was filled with smoke.
Charlotte covered her mouth.
“Where is she?”
Daniel pointed.
“Executive archive.”
They ran.
Then Charlotte stopped.
A red light was blinking above the archive door.
Recording.
She stared.
“The cameras.”
Daniel nodded.
“Someone left them running.”
Charlotte stepped closer.
“Then the footage survived.”
“Yes.”
“Can we access it?”
Daniel looked at her.
“That's what they were trying to destroy.”
Inside the security room, every monitor was black.
The fire had damaged the main system.
But one terminal remained active.
Charlotte sat down.
“Can you recover it?”
Daniel nodded.
“I can try.”
He connected a portable drive.
Files began appearing.
Hundreds.
Then thousands.
Charlotte stared at the timestamps.
The footage went back months.
She whispered:
“Find the night I was attacked.”
Daniel searched.
The screen changed.
There she was.
Charlotte.
Being dragged across the marble floor.
Vivienne screaming.
Security guards watching.
Charlotte's face twisted with pain.
She looked away.
“Don't.”
Daniel continued.
“We need everything.”
The footage continued.
Then something appeared.
A security guard stepped out of frame.
He wasn't watching Charlotte.
He was looking toward the private elevator.
Someone had entered.
Charlotte leaned closer.
“Stop.”
Daniel froze the image.
The elevator doors were opening.
A woman stepped out.
Charlotte's heart stopped.
Her mother.
Eleanor.
Alive.
Standing in the hotel on the exact night Charlotte had been attacked.
Charlotte stared at the screen.
“She was here.”
Daniel nodded.
“She saw me.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't she come to me?”
Daniel didn't answer.
Charlotte's voice became angry.
“Why?”
“She was hiding.”
“From whom?”
Daniel pointed at the monitor.
Charlotte looked.
Another person appeared.
Richard Hale.
He walked toward Eleanor.
Charlotte's breathing stopped.
“He was here too.”
“Yes.”
“And Adrian.”
Daniel opened another camera feed.
Adrian entered the hallway.
Then Thomas.
Then Vivienne.
Charlotte stared at the screen.
“All of them.”
Daniel nodded.
“They were meeting.”
“Why?”
The footage continued.
Eleanor entered a private conference room.
The others followed.
Charlotte watched through another camera.
The sound was muted.
Daniel tried to restore the audio.
Static.
Then voices.
Adrian:
“She knows.”
Vivienne:
“How much?”
Adrian:
“Enough.”
Richard:
“Then we move tonight.”
Eleanor:
“You're not touching my daughter.”
Charlotte covered her mouth.
Her mother sounded furious.
Richard leaned toward Eleanor.
“You've already lost.”
Eleanor replied:
“No.”
She looked toward the camera.
And for one terrifying second, it seemed as though she was staring directly at Charlotte.
Then she said:
“She will take everything back.”
Charlotte's eyes filled with tears.
“She knew.”
Daniel looked at her.
“She knew I would come.”
“No.”
Charlotte shook her head.
“She knew I would survive.”
The footage continued.
Richard slammed his hand onto the table.
“You have forty-eight hours.”
Eleanor stood.
“You'll never get the documents.”
Adrian laughed.
“We already have the company.”
Eleanor looked at him.
“You have nothing.”
Vivienne stood.
“Where are the originals?”
Eleanor smiled.
“Somewhere none of you will find them.”
Richard's expression hardened.
“Then we'll find the one thing you cannot hide.”
“What?”
“Your daughter.”
Charlotte froze.
The footage suddenly went black.
Daniel looked at the system.
“Someone deleted the next section.”
Charlotte stared.
“Can you recover it?”
“Maybe.”
“Do it.”
Daniel worked quickly.
The computer flashed.
A hidden folder appeared.
ARCHIVE — LEVEL ZERO
Charlotte frowned.
“What is Level Zero?”
Daniel stared.
“I've never seen it.”
“Open it.”
He did.
The screen showed a live camera feed.
Charlotte's blood ran cold.
The feed was from beneath the hotel.
A secret room.
And inside…
Eleanor.
Alive.
Charlotte stood.
“She's still there.”
Daniel grabbed his weapon.
“Then we go now.”
They found the hidden elevator behind a wall panel.
The doors opened with the silver key Charlotte had found.
Daniel stared.
“This key shouldn't work.”
Charlotte stepped inside.
“It does.”
The elevator descended.
One floor.
Two.
Five.
Ten.
The numbers disappeared.
Charlotte looked at Daniel.
“How deep does this go?”
“I don't know.”
The elevator continued downward.
Then stopped.
The doors opened.
A dark corridor appeared.
Charlotte stepped out.
At the end was a steel door.
A camera watched them.
Then a speaker activated.
“Charlotte.”
Her mother's voice.
Charlotte's eyes filled with tears.
“Mom.”
“You shouldn't have come.”
Charlotte walked toward the door.
“You called me.”
“I needed you to know.”
“Know what?”
“That the footage isn't the most dangerous thing here.”
Charlotte frowned.
“What is?”
“The person who recorded it.”
The door opened.
Eleanor stood inside.
She looked exhausted.
But alive.
Charlotte ran to her.
They embraced.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then Charlotte pulled away.
“Why?”
Eleanor touched her face.
“I was trying to keep you alive.”
“You let me believe you were dead.”
“I had to.”
“You let me believe Dad was dead.”
“I had to.”
“You let them steal everything.”
“I had to.”
Charlotte shook her head.
“You always say that.”
Eleanor's eyes filled with tears.
“Because every time I chose the truth, someone paid for it.”
Charlotte looked at her.
“Who?”
Eleanor hesitated.
“Your father.”
Charlotte's heart tightened.
“Where is he?”
Eleanor looked away.
“I don't know.”
Charlotte froze.
“He called me.”
“What?”
“He told me not to trust Daniel.”
Eleanor looked toward him.
Daniel remained silent.
Her expression changed.
“So he found you.”
Charlotte nodded.
Eleanor closed her eyes.
“Then Hale is already moving.”
Suddenly, the lights turned red.
Daniel raised his weapon.
“We're not alone.”
Charlotte looked at the hallway.
Footsteps.
Several people.
Eleanor grabbed Charlotte's hand.
“There's another exit.”
They ran.
Behind them, gunfire erupted.
Daniel returned fire.
Charlotte and Eleanor entered a narrow passage.
“Mom!”
“Keep moving.”
“Where?”
“Archive room.”
“Why?”
“Because your father left something there.”
They reached a steel door.
Eleanor opened it.
Inside were hundreds of hard drives.
Documents.
Photographs.
Boxes.
Charlotte stared.
“This is everything.”
“Yes.”
“Solmere's real records.”
“Yes.”
“The evidence.”
“Yes.”
Charlotte looked at her mother.
“Why didn't you give this to the police?”
“Because the police were compromised.”
Charlotte stared.
“What?”
“Hale owns people in every institution.”
“Then how do we stop him?”
Eleanor pointed toward the computers.
“Release everything.”
Charlotte looked at the system.
“All of it?”
“All of it.”
“Won't that destroy Solmere?”
“It might.”
Charlotte hesitated.
Her mother touched her shoulder.
“Sometimes an empire has to burn before the truth can breathe.”
Charlotte looked at the files.
Then at Daniel.
He nodded.
“She's right.”
Charlotte sat down.
She began uploading.
One file.
Then another.
Then hundreds.
Financial records.
Secret accounts.
Bribes.
Forged contracts.
Political payments.
Blackmail.
And finally—
The recording of her mother's murder.
Charlotte froze.
“Mom.”
Eleanor looked at the screen.
Her face went pale.
“What?”
“This recording.”
They played it.
The video showed Eleanor entering a parking garage.
Richard Hale was waiting.
Adrian stood beside him.
Then Daniel appeared.
Charlotte's heart stopped.
Daniel on the screen spoke:
“She's coming.”
Eleanor turned.
“Daniel?”
The recording continued.
Daniel looked toward Hale.
“Where is the girl?”
Hale answered:
“She's safe.”
Daniel nodded.
Then he stepped aside.
A car approached.
Eleanor walked toward it.
Then a gunshot.
She collapsed.
Charlotte stared.
Her entire body went numb.
Daniel stood beside her.
He whispered:
“I tried to stop it.”
Charlotte turned toward him.
“You were there.”
“Yes.”
“You told him I was safe.”
“Yes.”
“You knew my mother was going to die.”
“Yes.”
“And you did nothing.”
Daniel looked at Eleanor.
“I was ordered to choose.”
“Between what?”
“You.”
Charlotte's eyes filled with tears.
“What does that mean?”
Daniel looked at her.
“Hale told me if I intervened, he would kill you.”
Charlotte shook her head.
“You should have saved her.”
“I know.”
“You should have saved both of us.”
“I know.”
Eleanor stepped between them.
“Charlotte.”
“No.”
Charlotte looked at her.
“I need the truth.”
Eleanor nodded.
Daniel lowered his head.
“I failed you.”
Charlotte stared at him.
Then something else appeared on the screen.
A timestamp.
The recording wasn't twenty years old.
It was dated only three months ago.
Charlotte froze.
“This wasn't the night she died.”
Eleanor looked at the screen.
Daniel stepped closer.
“No.”
Charlotte whispered:
“Mom…”
She turned.
“You weren't murdered.”
Eleanor looked away.
“What happened?”
Eleanor finally answered.
“I staged my death.”
Charlotte stared.
“Why?”
“Because Hale had discovered the truth.”
“What truth?”
Eleanor's face became pale.
“The man who ordered your father's disappearance…”
She looked at Charlotte.
“…wasn't Richard Hale.”
Charlotte stopped breathing.
“Then who?”
Eleanor pointed toward the screen.
A final figure appeared in the footage.
Someone had been standing behind Hale.
Someone Charlotte knew.
Someone whose face she had seen her entire life.
Her mother's voice broke.
“Your father's brother.”
Charlotte stared.
“Thomas?”
Eleanor shook her head.
“No.”
She whispered the name.
“Your father himself.”
Charlotte's world stopped.
“My father?”
“Yes.”
“He ordered his own disappearance?”
Eleanor nodded.
“And he ordered my death.”
Silence.
Charlotte couldn't speak.
The security footage continued playing.
Her father turned toward the camera.
For the first time, Charlotte saw his face clearly.
He looked directly into the lens.
And smiled.
Then the recording ended.
A message appeared on the screen.
IF CHARLOTTE HAS FOUND THIS, THE FINAL STAGE HAS BEGUN.
Charlotte stared.
Then another line appeared.
COME TO THE HOTEL ROOF ALONE.
Beneath it was one final sentence.
YOUR FATHER IS WAITING.
Charlotte slowly stood.
Her mother grabbed her hand.
“Don't go.”
Charlotte looked at her.
“I have to.”
“No.”
“I spent twenty-two years thinking he was dead.”
She wiped away a tear.
“If he's alive, I need to know why.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“I'll come with you.”
Charlotte looked at him.
“No.”
“Charlotte—”
She shook her head.
“If my father is behind all of this…”
She looked toward the screen.
“…then I need to face him myself.”
She walked toward the door.
Behind her, Eleanor whispered:
“Charlotte.”
She stopped.
Her mother looked terrified.
“Whatever he tells you…”
A pause.
“Don't believe him.”
Charlotte nodded.
Then walked away.
The security footage had revealed the truth.
But it had also opened a door to something far worse.
Because Charlotte had spent her entire life believing her father was a victim.
Now she had to face the possibility that he had been the architect of everything.
And waiting above the hotel…
was the man she had mourned since childhood.
May you like
The man who had never been dead.
The man who might have started the war long before Charlotte knew she was part of it.
