Chapter 6 – Vanessa Strikes Back

Chapter 6 – Vanessa Strikes Back

The name lingered in Daniel's mind long after he ended the call.

Olivia Bennett.

A former Weston employee.

Missing for eight years.

Connected somehow to the antique jewelry box seen in the hidden recording.

Nothing about it made sense.

But before Detective Brooks could begin searching for answers, another crisis exploded.

Vanessa had decided she wasn't going down without a fight.

The Morning Headlines

By sunrise, every major news outlet was covering the scandal.

The first reports had praised the security footage for exposing the truth.

By noon...

The story had changed.

WESTON HOUSEKEEPER ACCUSED OF MANIPULATING EVIDENCE.

VANESSA HARRINGTON CLAIMS VIDEO WAS ALTERED.

LAWYERS CALL FOOTAGE "DIGITALLY TAMPERED."

Daniel stared at the television in disbelief.

"What?"

Margaret, seated across from him, looked equally stunned.

"How could anyone believe that?"

Before Daniel could answer, Arthur Collins entered the dining room carrying a tablet.

"You need to see this."

Social media had erupted overnight.

Some people supported Emily.

Others insisted the video had been edited.

Anonymous accounts flooded the internet with the same message:

"Never trust a criminal pretending to be innocent."

Hundreds of comments repeated identical phrases.

Thousands appeared within hours.

Someone wasn't just defending Vanessa.

Someone was organizing a campaign.

A Carefully Planned Interview

At eleven o'clock, Vanessa appeared on a nationally televised morning program.

She wore a cream-colored suit.

Minimal makeup.

A simple pearl necklace.

The image of a devastated, respectable woman.

The host leaned forward sympathetically.

"Miss Harrington, you've been accused of framing an employee."

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

"I've been falsely portrayed as a monster."

Her voice trembled at exactly the right moments.

"I loved the Weston family."

"I would never intentionally hurt anyone."

"What about the security footage?"

Vanessa sighed.

"My legal team has reason to believe the recording was manipulated."

She dabbed her eyes with a tissue.

"I've become the victim of a coordinated attack."

The interviewer nodded.

"So you're saying you're innocent?"

Vanessa looked directly into the camera.

"Absolutely."

Within minutes, clips of the interview spread across the internet.

Public opinion began to shift.

Emily Pays the Price

Emily had barely left her apartment when the first stranger recognized her.

"That's her."

"The maid."

"The thief."

Another person muttered,

"I heard she faked the whole thing."

Emily lowered her head and kept walking.

She reached the grocery store only to discover several people secretly recording her with their phones.

One woman loudly whispered,

"She looks guilty."

Emily abandoned her shopping basket and hurried outside.

Her phone rang almost immediately.

It was Mrs. Lewis.

"Emily..."

"I'm so sorry."

"What happened?"

"Reporters are outside your apartment building."

Emily stopped walking.

"They know where I live?"

"I'm afraid they do."

Her heart sank.

Ryan.

She thought only of him.

Medical school was difficult enough without cameras following him across campus.

The First Stone

That afternoon, someone threw a rock through the apartment window.

Glass shattered across the living room floor.

Attached to the rock was a handwritten note.

THIEVES DON'T DESERVE SYMPATHY.

Ryan picked it up with trembling hands.

Emily quietly folded the note.

She didn't cry.

She was too exhausted.

Daniel Makes a Decision

Daniel watched the news conference in silence.

Every sentence Vanessa spoke sounded rehearsed.

Every tear appeared perfectly timed.

When the interview ended, he called Detective Brooks.

"How soon can the forensic lab examine the original footage?"

"It's already there."

"And?"

Brooks replied confidently.

"They'll know if it's been edited."

Daniel looked out his office window.

"Good."

"Because I'm done letting her control the story."

Digital Lies

At the state forensic laboratory, specialists began analyzing every frame of the surveillance recording.

Hours later, Dr. Hannah Pierce invited Brooks into her office.

She displayed several graphs on a monitor.

"The file hasn't been altered."

"You're certain?"

She nodded.

"Not only is the video authentic..."

"...the metadata confirms it has existed continuously since the moment it was recorded."

"No cuts."

"No missing frames."

"No digital manipulation."

Brooks smiled.

"So Vanessa lied."

Dr. Pierce shook her head.

"There's more."

She enlarged another image.

"The campaign online."

"What about it?"

"Thousands of accounts posted identical comments within seconds."

"Automated bots."

Brooks frowned.

"Someone paid for this."

The Deleted Emails

Arthur Collins continued reviewing internal security logs from the mansion.

While checking Vanessa's staff access records, he noticed something unusual.

Late the night before the birthday party, Vanessa had entered Daniel's private office.

She remained inside for exactly fourteen minutes.

Daniel frowned.

"She never told me she was there."

Collins nodded.

"She logged into your computer."

Daniel immediately sat down at his desk.

The inbox looked normal.

Too normal.

Several folders contained suspicious gaps.

He contacted the company's IT director.

Within an hour, deleted files began reappearing.

Dozens of emails had been erased.

Every deleted message had one thing in common.

Emily's name.

Performance reviews.

Staff recommendations.

Security reports.

Someone had systematically removed every positive record connected to her.

Replacing them with disciplinary reports.

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"This wasn't about one necklace."

Collins nodded.

"She wanted everyone to believe Emily had always been dishonest."

A Difficult Conversation

Daniel drove to Emily's apartment that evening.

She hesitated before opening the door.

The bruise on her cheek had begun turning dark purple.

Broken glass still covered part of the living room.

"I'm sorry."

Daniel said quietly.

Emily gave a tired smile.

"You've apologized already."

"Not for this."

He looked around the apartment.

"I should have protected my employees."

She shook her head.

"You couldn't have known."

"I should have."

He handed her a folder.

Inside were the restored emails.

Every commendation.

Every positive review.

Every recommendation Vanessa had deleted.

Emily stared at the papers.

"I thought management stopped believing in me."

"They never had the chance."

Daniel answered.

"Vanessa erased the evidence."

Emily looked down.

For months she had blamed herself.

Wondered why her hard work no longer seemed to matter.

Now she understood.

Someone had quietly rewritten the story of her life.

An Anonymous Warning

Late that night, Detective Brooks received an envelope with no return address.

Inside was a single photograph.

It showed Vanessa standing beside the unidentified man wearing the Weston signet ring.

But this time, the image was clearer.

The man's face remained hidden.

Yet another detail stood out.

A distinctive tattoo on his wrist.

A black compass.

Tucked behind the photograph was a handwritten note.

You're looking at the wrong woman.

Vanessa is only following orders.

Brooks read the note twice.

Then picked up his phone.

"Daniel..."

"I think we have a bigger problem."

"What happened?"

Brooks looked again at the photograph.

"The person behind Vanessa..."

May you like

"...may still be inside your family."
