Chapter 9 – Another Victim

Chapter 9 – Another Victim

Margaret's hands trembled as she unfolded the yellowed letter.

Eight years.

The envelope had remained hidden inside Olivia Bennett's personnel file for eight long years.

Had someone forgotten it?

Or had someone made sure it was never delivered?

The room fell completely silent.

Detective Alan Brooks nodded gently.

"Read it."

Margaret swallowed hard and began.

Mrs. Weston,

If you are reading this, something has already gone terribly wrong.

I don't know who I can trust anymore, but I know one thing with absolute certainty.

Please don't trust your brother Richard.

He has been meeting secretly with people who should never be inside this house.

I accidentally saw something I wasn't supposed to see.

Now they're trying to make me look like a thief.

If I disappear... it won't be because I ran away.

Please believe me.

Olivia Bennett

Margaret lowered the letter.

Tears streamed silently down her face.

"I never received this."

Brooks carefully took the page.

"The envelope was never opened."

Rachel Kim examined the file.

"No."

She pointed toward the corner.

"It wasn't forgotten."

A faint layer of dried adhesive surrounded the flap.

"It was resealed."

Someone had opened Olivia's letter.

Read every word.

Then sealed it again.

And buried it where Margaret would never find it.

Olivia Wasn't the First

Brooks immediately reopened Olivia Bennett's missing-person investigation.

The dusty case file arrived from county archives before noon.

Inside were photographs.

Witness statements.

Employment records.

Police notes.

Most of it matched what Harold Jenkins had already described.

A valuable diamond bracelet had disappeared from a Harrington Hotel.

The bracelet had been "discovered" inside Olivia's employee locker.

She was arrested.

Released several days later when the evidence fell apart.

By then...

Her reputation was destroyed.

She resigned.

Three weeks later...

She vanished.

Brooks turned another page.

Then stopped.

A handwritten note from the original detective.

Victim repeatedly claimed someone was trying to frame her. No supporting witnesses came forward.

Brooks closed the file slowly.

"It happened before."

Rachel nodded.

"And no one listened."

A Familiar Face

That afternoon, the police department released a confidential request for information connected to Olivia's disappearance.

Only hours later...

A woman arrived at headquarters asking to speak with Detective Brooks.

Her name was Sophia Lang.

She looked exhausted.

As though carrying years of regret.

"I saw Olivia's picture on the news."

Brooks invited her into the interview room.

"How did you know her?"

Sophia stared at the photograph lying on the table.

"We worked together."

"At the Harrington Grand Hotel."

Rachel looked up.

"Were you there when Olivia was accused of stealing the bracelet?"

Sophia nodded slowly.

"I was."

"Did you believe she was guilty?"

Sophia's eyes filled with tears.

"I was too afraid not to."

The Truth Sophia Buried

Sophia twisted her wedding ring nervously.

"I've lived with this for eight years."

Brooks leaned forward.

"Tell us everything."

Sophia took a deep breath.

"Olivia told me someone was following her."

"She kept saying she felt watched."

Rachel exchanged a glance with Brooks.

"The hidden cameras..."

Sophia continued.

"One night she asked me to stay after work."

"She wanted to show me something."

"What?"

"She said she'd found financial records."

Brooks frowned.

"What kind?"

"I never saw them."

"Why not?"

Sophia looked away.

"Because before she could show me..."

"...security arrived."

"They searched her locker."

"And somehow..."

"...the bracelet was inside."

Exactly like Emily.

The same accusation.

The same planted evidence.

The same humiliation.

Emily Sees Herself

Emily listened quietly from the corner of the interview room.

Every word Sophia spoke sounded painfully familiar.

The surprise.

The confusion.

The desperate insistence that she was innocent.

The feeling that no one believed her.

She finally asked,

"What happened to Olivia after that?"

Sophia wiped away tears.

"Everyone avoided her."

"No one wanted to work with a suspected thief."

"She stopped smiling."

"Stopped eating."

"She told me she couldn't understand why her life was falling apart."

Emily closed her eyes.

Only days earlier...

She had felt exactly the same.

Another Witness

Sophia hesitated before speaking again.

"There was someone else."

Brooks immediately looked up.

"Who?"

"A maintenance supervisor."

"His name was Peter Lawson."

"He told Olivia the hotel's security system had recorded something important."

"What happened?"

Sophia lowered her voice.

"He disappeared too."

The room went still.

"Disappeared?"

Sophia nodded.

"He resigned suddenly."

"No forwarding address."

"No goodbye."

"He was simply... gone."

Richard's Past

Rachel began comparing employment records from Harrington Hotels and Weston International.

Within an hour, another connection emerged.

Richard Weston had served as a consultant to Harrington Hotels nine years earlier.

His responsibilities included...

Security restructuring.

Personnel oversight.

Internal investigations.

Daniel stared at the report.

"So Richard knew Olivia."

Rachel nodded.

"And according to payroll records..."

"He approved the investigation that labeled her a thief."

Margaret slowly sat down.

"My brother..."

"He was involved even then."

Brooks added quietly,

"And now we know he was involved again."

A Visit to the Cemetery

That evening, Emily visited her parents' graves.

She often came whenever life became too overwhelming.

The cemetery overlooked a quiet hillside outside Oakland.

Ryan accompanied her.

Neither spoke for several minutes.

Finally, Emily whispered,

"I almost lost everything."

Ryan looked at her.

"But you didn't."

Emily shook her head.

"Only because there was a camera."

She stared at the headstones.

"What if there hadn't been?"

Ryan didn't answer.

Because they both knew.

She would probably be in jail.

Her career over.

Her future destroyed.

Just like Olivia's.

Emily placed fresh white lilies beside the graves.

Then quietly made a promise.

"I'm going to find out what happened to her."

"I'm not letting them erase another innocent woman."

A Visitor in the Dark

Later that night, Detective Brooks returned home after another sixteen-hour day.

As he stepped onto his porch, he noticed something unusual.

An envelope rested against his front door.

No stamp.

No return address.

Inside was a single photograph.

Olivia Bennett.

Standing beside another young woman.

Brooks immediately recognized the second face.

Emily Carter.

He frowned.

The photograph had been taken nearly nine years earlier.

Impossible.

Emily had never worked at Harrington Hotels.

He turned the picture over.

Written on the back were six words.

They were never strangers.

Brooks stared at the photograph for a long time.

If the note was true...

Then the case wasn't just about Emily being chosen at random.

Someone had selected her...

May you like

For a reason that reached back nearly a decade.
