Chapter 7 – The Financial Motive

Chapter 7 – The Financial Motive

Detective Alan Brooks didn't sleep.

The anonymous photograph remained on his desk long after midnight.

Vanessa Harrington.

The unidentified man wearing a Weston family signet ring.

The black compass tattoo.

And one sentence that refused to leave his mind.

You're looking at the wrong woman. Vanessa is only following orders.

He had investigated organized crime, financial fraud, and corporate corruption.

One lesson had remained true in every case.

When someone is willing to destroy an innocent person...

Follow the money.

Freezing the Accounts

By eight o'clock the next morning, Brooks obtained a court order authorizing a financial review of Vanessa's accounts.

Because the investigation now involved possible fraud, conspiracy, and evidence tampering, the Financial Crimes Unit joined the case.

Special Investigator Rachel Kim arrived carrying three thick folders.

"I've spent the last six hours going through Harrington's finances."

Daniel looked up.

"Find anything?"

Rachel didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she spread dozens of bank statements across the conference table.

"She's not wealthy."

Margaret frowned.

"What?"

"She looks wealthy."

Rachel nodded.

"There's a difference."

Living on Borrowed Money

On paper, Vanessa Harrington appeared to live a glamorous life.

Luxury vacations.

Designer clothing.

Private clubs.

Charity galas.

Imported sports cars.

Social media painted the picture of effortless success.

Reality told another story.

Rachel pointed to the statements.

"She has seventeen active credit accounts."

Daniel blinked.

"Seventeen?"

"Every one of them is nearly maxed out."

Another page.

"Three personal loans."

"Two private lenders."

"One unpaid tax lien."

Margaret stared at the figures.

"How much debt?"

Rachel took a slow breath.

"Just over three point eight million dollars."

Silence filled the room.

Daniel looked again at the reports.

"But the Harrington family owns hotels."

Rachel nodded.

"They used to."

"The company collapsed three years ago."

"They've been hiding their financial problems ever since."

The Insurance Policy

Rachel slid another document toward Brooks.

"This is where things become interesting."

It was an insurance contract.

The policy covered Margaret Weston's diamond necklace.

Declared value:

$8.5 million.

Margaret looked surprised.

"I haven't reviewed that policy in years."

Rachel tapped the final page.

"If the necklace were stolen during a private event..."

"...the insurance company would immediately begin processing a full payout."

Daniel frowned.

"To my mother."

"Yes."

"But someone would also become the obvious suspect."

Everyone looked toward Emily, who had remained quietly seated near the end of the table.

Rachel continued.

"The perfect suspect."

"A housekeeper with disciplinary reports."

"A handbag containing the necklace."

"And dozens of wealthy witnesses."

Emily lowered her eyes.

Daniel's stomach tightened.

Vanessa hadn't chosen Emily by chance.

She had built a believable story around her.

A Convenient Engagement

Rachel opened another folder.

"There are additional transfers."

She projected several bank records onto the screen.

One payment caught Daniel's attention.

$450,000.

Transferred six weeks earlier.

Sender:

Weston Family Trust.

Recipient:

Vanessa Harrington.

Margaret's expression hardened.

"I never approved that."

Daniel looked equally confused.

"I didn't either."

Rachel zoomed in.

"The transfer was authorized using a digital signature."

Daniel stared at the screen.

"Whose signature?"

Rachel answered carefully.

"Yours."

Silence.

Daniel knew immediately.

He had never approved that payment.

Someone had used his credentials.

Emily Connects the Dots

Emily spoke for the first time in nearly an hour.

"There was one afternoon..."

Everyone turned toward her.

"It was about two months ago."

"I was cleaning Mr. Daniel's office."

Daniel nodded.

"What happened?"

"I remember Miss Harrington asking if I could leave for ten minutes."

"She said she wanted to prepare a surprise anniversary gift."

Daniel frowned.

"I wasn't even home that day."

Emily continued.

"She insisted I leave immediately."

"When I came back..."

"...she was sitting at your computer."

The room fell silent.

Rachel slowly closed the folder.

"That explains the deleted emails."

Daniel nodded.

"And possibly the transfer."

The Accountant

Later that afternoon, Brooks questioned Benjamin Pierce, the Weston family's senior accountant.

Benjamin had worked for the company for nearly eighteen years.

He looked exhausted.

Dark circles framed his eyes.

Brooks placed the bank records on the table.

"Recognize these?"

Benjamin glanced down.

His face lost all color.

"I..."

"You do."

Benjamin swallowed.

"I prepared the paperwork."

"For the transfer?"

"Yes."

"Who instructed you?"

Benjamin hesitated.

Brooks leaned forward.

"Mr. Pierce."

"If you lie to investigators now..."

"...you become part of this conspiracy."

Benjamin closed his eyes.

Then quietly answered.

"Miss Harrington."

"Did she say why she needed nearly half a million dollars?"

"No."

"She only told me..."

"...Mr. Weston had approved everything personally."

A Dangerous Debt

Rachel's team continued tracing Vanessa's financial history.

The deeper they looked...

The darker it became.

Most of her private loans hadn't come from banks.

They came from underground lenders.

Several were linked to illegal gambling operations.

Interest rates exceeded thirty percent.

Missed payments carried severe consequences.

Rachel pointed to one particular transaction.

"This payment was due three days after Margaret's birthday party."

Daniel read the amount.

$2.1 million.

He looked up.

"She couldn't pay it."

Rachel nodded.

"Not without a miracle."

Margaret whispered,

"Or an insurance payout."

A Visitor From the Past

That evening, while investigators worked through financial records, an elderly man arrived unexpectedly at the mansion.

Arthur Collins escorted him inside.

"My name is Harold Jenkins."

He introduced himself quietly.

"I used to work for Harrington Hotels."

Rachel recognized the company immediately.

"What brings you here?"

Harold removed a worn envelope from his coat pocket.

"I saw the news."

"I think Miss Harrington has done this before."

Daniel leaned forward.

"What do you mean?"

Harold placed several photographs on the table.

One showed a luxury hotel lobby.

Another showed a young receptionist crying.

Harold sighed.

"Ten years ago..."

"A valuable diamond bracelet disappeared."

"The police found it inside this young woman's locker."

Rachel looked at the photograph.

"What happened?"

"She was arrested."

"Lost her job."

"No one believed her."

Daniel studied the receptionist's face.

"What was her name?"

Harold answered softly.

"Olivia Bennett."

The room became silent.

Emily's heart skipped.

The missing woman.

The same name Detective Brooks had mentioned only a day earlier.

Harold looked at them one by one.

"The charges were eventually dropped."

"But by then..."

"...Olivia had already disappeared."

Brooks slowly asked,

"Did anyone ever investigate Vanessa?"

Harold gave a bitter smile.

"They tried."

"But the security footage..."

He paused.

"...had mysteriously vanished."

One Final Discovery

Just before midnight, Rachel received another report from the Financial Crimes Unit.

She read it once.

Then again.

"This can't be right."

Daniel looked over.

"What is it?"

Rachel slowly turned the monitor toward him.

A wire transfer.

Dated the morning after the birthday party.

The sender wasn't Vanessa.

It wasn't the Harrington family.

It wasn't the Weston Trust.

It came from an offshore account in the Cayman Islands.

Recipient:

Vanessa Harrington.

Amount:

Five million dollars.

Reference line:

Phase One Complete.

No sender's name.

No company.

Only a coded account number.

Rachel looked at Brooks.

"This was never just about stealing a necklace."

Brooks nodded grimly.

"No."

He stared at the words on the screen.

"Someone paid Vanessa..."

May you like

"...to destroy Emily."
