Chapter 8 – Family Lies

Chapter 8 – Family Lies
The words on Rachel Kim's monitor hung over the room like a storm cloud.
Phase One Complete.
Five million dollars.
Transferred from an offshore account in the Cayman Islands less than twelve hours after Margaret Weston's birthday party.
No sender.
No explanation.
Only a payment large enough to erase Vanessa Harrington's crushing debts overnight.
Detective Alan Brooks folded his arms.
"People don't pay five million dollars because someone framed a housekeeper."
Rachel nodded.
"They pay that kind of money because the frame-up was only one piece of a much larger plan."
Daniel stared at the screen, unable to shake a single thought.
If someone had financed Vanessa...
Who had wanted Emily destroyed badly enough to spend millions?
The Weston Trust
The following morning, Daniel unlocked a section of the Weston archives that had not been opened in years.
The basement vault contained decades of financial records, contracts, wills, and family correspondence.
Dust covered the shelves.
Margaret joined him quietly.
"I haven't been down here since your father passed away."
Daniel pulled out several leather-bound ledgers.
"I need to understand where that transfer came from."
For hours, they searched through trust documents.
Most were ordinary.
Investment reports.
Property deeds.
Shareholder agreements.
Then Daniel found something unusual.
A file marked:
CONFIDENTIAL — FAMILY SUCCESSION AGREEMENT
The document listed members of the Weston family and the distribution of voting shares should Margaret retire or pass away.
Daniel frowned.
"This isn't the latest version."
Margaret took the file from him.
"It can't be."
She flipped through the pages.
Someone had added an amendment.
Her expression slowly hardened.
"I never signed this."
A Forged Amendment
Rachel examined the document under magnification.
"The signature looks authentic."
Daniel looked at her.
"But?"
"The ink doesn't match the rest of the document."
She pointed to the signature line.
"The agreement is twelve years old."
"This signature..."
"...is less than two years old."
Margaret whispered,
"Someone forged my approval."
Rachel continued reading.
The amendment contained one shocking clause.
If Daniel married Vanessa Harrington, the Harrington family would automatically receive a significant block of Weston International voting shares.
Daniel looked up sharply.
"I've never seen this."
Margaret shook her head.
"Neither have I."
Rachel slowly closed the file.
"So the engagement wasn't only personal."
"It was business."
Richard Weston
Detective Brooks requested interviews with every adult member of the Weston family.
Most cooperated willingly.
One did not.
Richard Weston.
Margaret's younger brother.
A former executive within Weston International.
Richard arrived nearly an hour late.
His expensive suit was immaculate.
His smile never reached his eyes.
Brooks asked the first question.
"Were you aware of the amended succession agreement?"
Richard shrugged.
"I assumed Daniel handled those matters."
Daniel watched him carefully.
"My signature isn't on it."
Richard smiled faintly.
"Then perhaps your attorneys made a mistake."
"No attorney drafted this."
Daniel replied.
"It was forged."
For the first time, Richard's smile faded.
Only slightly.
Emily Returns
At Mrs. Lewis's request, Emily returned briefly to the Weston estate to collect the last of her personal belongings from the staff quarters.
She hoped to avoid everyone.
Instead, she found herself standing once again in the mansion that had nearly destroyed her life.
Every hallway brought back memories.
Long hours.
Quiet mornings.
Endless work.
She packed slowly.
A framed photograph of Ryan.
A small notebook.
A pair of comfortable shoes she kept at work.
Nothing expensive.
Nothing anyone else would have noticed.
As she closed the locker door, she heard voices in the hallway.
She recognized them immediately.
Richard Weston.
And someone else.
She stepped back instinctively, remaining hidden behind the partially open laundry room door.
The Conversation
Richard spoke first.
"We have to stop the investigation."
The second voice answered.
"I've already done everything I can."
Emily froze.
The voice belonged to Vanessa.
She sounded exhausted.
"They know about the money."
Richard lowered his voice.
"Then deny everything."
"The forensic accountants are tracing the transfers."
"They'll reach the offshore accounts."
Richard's expression hardened.
"They won't if you're careful."
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
"Careful?"
"You told me Daniel would never question me."
"You said Emily would be arrested before anyone checked the cameras."
Richard looked away.
"Things changed."
Emily pressed a hand over her mouth.
Richard had known.
He hadn't simply helped Vanessa afterward.
He had been involved before the party even began.
A Dangerous Discovery
Emily carefully reached into her apron pocket.
Her phone.
Without making a sound, she opened the voice recorder.
She wasn't close enough to capture every word.
But she recorded enough.
Richard continued.
"We only needed her reputation destroyed."
"No one was supposed to get hurt."
Vanessa stared at him.
"That's easy for you to say."
"You weren't the one standing there."
"You weren't the one who slapped her."
Richard replied coldly,
"You lost control."
"And now we're cleaning up your mistake."
Emily's pulse raced.
The recording continued.
Then...
A floorboard creaked beneath her foot.
Vanessa turned instantly.
"Did you hear that?"
Richard looked toward the laundry room.
Emily's heart nearly stopped.
Almost Caught
She stepped backward silently.
Holding her breath.
Richard approached the doorway.
One step.
Then another.
Just as he reached for the handle...
Mrs. Lewis appeared from the opposite hallway.
"Mr. Weston?"
Richard stopped.
"Yes?"
"The detectives are looking for you."
His eyes remained fixed on the laundry room for another second.
Then he turned away.
"We're finished here."
Vanessa followed him without another word.
Only after their footsteps disappeared did Emily slowly exhale.
Mrs. Lewis opened the laundry room door.
"I thought I heard someone."
Emily stepped out, pale and shaking.
Mrs. Lewis looked at her face.
"What happened?"
Emily held up her phone.
"I think..."
"...I just recorded something important."
The Truth Comes Out
Less than an hour later, Emily sat inside Detective Brooks' office.
The recording wasn't perfect.
Several words were difficult to hear.
But the key statements were unmistakable.
We have to stop the investigation.
You said Emily would be arrested.
We only needed her reputation destroyed.
When the recording ended, the room fell silent.
Daniel stared at the speaker.
Richard had lied to his face.
Not once.
Repeatedly.
Margaret slowly lowered her head.
"My own brother..."
Rachel looked toward Brooks.
"This gives us conspiracy."
Brooks nodded.
"And probably obstruction."
Daniel looked at Emily.
"You came back only to collect your things."
Emily gave a small nod.
"I almost walked away."
"If I had left five minutes earlier..."
"...I never would have heard them."
One More Family Secret
Just as Brooks prepared an arrest warrant for Richard Weston, Arthur Collins rushed into the office carrying an old personnel file.
"I found something."
He placed the faded folder on the desk.
Across the top was a familiar name.
Olivia Bennett.
Inside was her original employment application.
Her personnel photograph.
Performance reviews.
Then...
A sealed envelope that had somehow never been opened.
Brooks carefully broke the seal.
Inside was a handwritten letter dated eight years earlier.
Addressed to Margaret Weston.
Margaret unfolded it with trembling hands.
The first sentence stole the air from the room.

Mrs. Weston, if anything happens to me, please don't trust your brother Richard.
