CHAPTER 11 — THE TRIAL OF THE LIE

CHAPTER 11 — THE TRIAL OF THE LIE
By Monday morning, Mia had become a villain.
Not privately.
Not inside the Cole family.
Publicly.
Her face appeared on every news channel.
Every social media platform.
Every gossip website.
The headline was always the same.
MYSTERY NANNY ACCUSED OF TARGETING BILLIONAIRE FAMILY.
Below it was a photograph of Mia.
She looked exhausted.
Frightened.
Guilty.
It had been taken outside the courthouse.
The caption underneath read:
Mia Carter faces charges connected to theft, fraud, and attempted manipulation of the Cole family inheritance.
Mia stared at the screen.
“I haven't been charged with anything.”
Ethan stood behind her.
“They don't need charges.”
“What?”
“They only need people to believe you did it.”
Mia turned.
“Then this is exactly what they wanted.”
“Yes.”
A knock sounded at the door.
Ethan's attorney entered.
“Mr. Cole.”
Ethan turned.
“What happened?”
“The prosecutor has accepted an emergency petition.”
“For what?”
“To freeze the trust.”
Mia's face fell.
“They're freezing the inheritance?”
“No.”
The attorney looked at her.
“Something more dangerous.”
He placed a document on the table.
“The court is being asked to determine whether Mia is legally competent to inherit the trust.”
Mia stared.
“They're trying to declare me unstable.”
Ethan nodded.
“That's the plan.”
The hearing began at nine o'clock.
The courthouse was surrounded by cameras.
Hundreds of people gathered outside.
Victoria arrived first.
She wore a pale suit.
No jewelry.
No dramatic makeup.
She looked vulnerable.
Almost innocent.
The crowd immediately surrounded her.
“Victoria!”
“Did Mia attack you?”
“Are you afraid of her?”
Victoria lowered her head.
“I don't want to speak about it.”
A reporter shouted:
“Do you still love Ethan?”
Victoria paused.
Then whispered:
“I just want my family back.”
The cameras exploded.
Mia watched from inside the courthouse.
“She knows exactly what she's doing.”
Ethan nodded.
“She has practiced this.”
Then Victoria looked through the courthouse doors.
Her eyes met Mia's.
For one second, the mask disappeared.
Victoria smiled.
Not sadly.
Triumphantly.
Mia's stomach tightened.
“She knows something.”
Ethan looked at her.
“What?”
“I don't know.”
Then the courtroom doors opened.
The judge entered.
Everyone stood.
The prosecutor presented the first piece of evidence.
A Rolex.
The same watch Victoria had claimed Mia stole.
“Your Honor, this item was recovered from Ms. Carter's personal belongings.”
Mia whispered:
“That isn't true.”
Ethan's attorney stood.
“Objection.”
The judge nodded.
“Explain.”
“The watch was never recovered from Ms. Carter.”
The prosecutor smiled.
“We have photographic evidence.”
A photograph appeared.
Mia standing beside the watch.
The room murmured.
Mia stared.
“I've never seen that photograph.”
The prosecutor continued.
“Ms. Carter had access to the master bedroom.”
“Yes.”
“She had access to the safe?”
“No.”
“You cleaned the room?”
“Sometimes.”
“So you had opportunity.”
Mia looked at the judge.
“Opportunity isn't proof.”
The prosecutor smiled.
“Perhaps.”
Then he placed another document on the table.
“Then perhaps this is.”
It was a financial transfer.
$750,000.
From an account connected to the Cole family trust.
To an account under Mia's name.
Mia's face went white.
“I never received that money.”
The prosecutor looked at her.
“The transfer says otherwise.”
Ethan stood.
“That account was opened after she disappeared.”
The prosecutor replied:
“By whom?”
Ethan froze.
The attorney beside him whispered:
“We don't know.”
Mia looked at Ethan.
“Can you prove it?”
He shook his head.
Not yet.
The prosecutor smiled.
“That is the problem.”
Victoria's attorney called the first witness.
A former housekeeper.
She testified that Mia had been “obsessed” with Ethan.
That Mia had talked about becoming part of the family.
That Mia had once said:
“I deserve more than being a nanny.”
Mia stared at her.
“That never happened.”
The second witness said Mia had asked questions about the trust.
The third claimed Mia had tried to access Richard Cole's private files.
Each statement sounded believable.
Together, they created a story.
A story where Mia wasn't an innocent woman.
She was an ambitious outsider.
A manipulator.
A thief.
A woman who had entered a billionaire household for one reason:
Money.
The judge listened silently.
The media listened.
And Victoria watched Mia with a faint smile.
Then came the most devastating witness.
Marcus.
He entered the courtroom.
Mia's eyes widened.
“Why is he here?”
Ethan looked stunned.
“I don't know.”
Marcus took the stand.
He raised his right hand.
Swore to tell the truth.
The prosecutor approached.
“Mr. Cole, did you know Ms. Carter?”
“Yes.”
“How would you describe her?”
Marcus looked at Mia.
For a long moment, he said nothing.
Then:
“Dangerous.”
Mia's heart dropped.
Ethan stood.
“Marcus.”
Marcus continued.
“She manipulated my brother.”
The courtroom erupted.
Mia whispered:
“No.”
Marcus said:
“She knew about the trust.”
“She knew about the inheritance.”
“She wanted access.”
Ethan's lawyer objected.
But the damage was already done.
The prosecutor asked:
“Did she ever threaten you?”
Marcus looked down.
“Yes.”
Mia stared at him.
“That is a lie.”
Marcus didn't look at her.
“She told me she would expose the family if we didn't give her what she wanted.”
The judge watched carefully.
Then asked:
“Do you have evidence?”
Marcus reached into his jacket.
“Yes.”
He placed a phone on the evidence table.
A recording played.
Mia's voice filled the courtroom.
“If you don't give me access to the trust, I'll destroy this family.”
Gasps erupted.
Mia stood.
“That isn't me!”
The recording continued.
“You have until tomorrow.”
Mia shook her head.
“They edited it.”
The prosecutor smiled.
“Convenient.”
Ethan looked at Marcus.
His brother refused to meet his eyes.
Mia suddenly noticed something.
The phone.
A small scratch near the bottom.
She remembered it.
She had seen that phone before.
In the mansion.
On the night Victoria had accused her of stealing the Rolex.
Her eyes widened.
“That phone belongs to Victoria.”
Everyone turned.
Victoria's expression changed.
Mia pointed.
“The recording came from her phone.”
The prosecutor frowned.
“Are you certain?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
Mia looked at Ethan.
Then at the judge.
“Because I saw it the night she staged the theft.”
Victoria suddenly stood.
“She's lying!”
The judge struck the gavel.
“Order!”
Victoria sat down.
But Mia had noticed something else.
The phone's timestamp.
She whispered:
“Check the metadata.”
Ethan's attorney immediately understood.
“Your Honor, we request forensic examination.”
The prosecutor objected.
But the judge allowed it.
The phone was handed to a forensic technician.
Twenty minutes later, the result arrived.
The recording had been created three days after the alleged conversation.
Silence filled the courtroom.
Mia looked at Marcus.
He finally looked back.
His eyes were full of regret.
Ethan stood.
“You lied under oath.”
Marcus closed his eyes.
“I know.”
The judge demanded:
“Mr. Cole, explain.”
Marcus looked toward Victoria.
Then toward the courthouse gallery.
Finally, he said:
“I was forced.”
“By whom?”
Marcus swallowed.
“Catherine.”
Mia's heart stopped.
The judge frowned.
“Who is Catherine?”
Marcus whispered:
“Catherine Vale.”
The courtroom erupted.
Catherine's name appeared everywhere.
The prosecutor demanded clarification.
Marcus continued.
“She controls Victoria.”
“And you?”
“She controls me too.”
Ethan stared at his brother.
“Why?”
Marcus looked at him.
“Because she threatened the children.”
Mia stood.
“What children?”
“Lily and Noah.”
Mia's heart raced.
“They're safe.”
Marcus shook his head.
“Not anymore.”
The room went silent.
“What do you mean?”
Marcus looked at the judge.
“They're being held somewhere.”
Mia's face drained of color.
“Where?”
Marcus didn't answer.
Then the courtroom doors opened.
A woman entered.
Silver hair.
Black dress.
Walking slowly.
Catherine Vale.
Every person in the courtroom turned.
Victoria smiled.
Mia froze.
Catherine walked toward the witness stand.
She didn't look at the judge.
She looked directly at Mia.
Then said:
“Your Honor, I would like to correct the record.”
The judge stared.
“You are not scheduled to testify.”
“I know.”
“Then leave the courtroom.”
Catherine smiled.
“I don't think you understand.”
She placed a folder on the desk.
“I am the legal administrator of the original Cole Trust.”
Ethan's face changed.
“That position was abolished.”
Catherine looked at him.
“Only publicly.”
She opened the folder.
“The original trust was never dissolved.”
Mia whispered:
“Then who controls it?”
Catherine looked directly at her.
“You do.”
The courtroom went silent.
Mia stared.
“What?”
Catherine smiled.
“You have been the legal beneficiary since the day you were born.”
The prosecutor jumped to his feet.
“That's impossible.”
Catherine turned.
“Then perhaps you should read the documents.”
She handed them to the judge.
The judge read the first page.
Then the second.
His expression changed.
“This appears to be authentic.”
Ethan stepped forward.
“What does it say?”
The judge looked at Mia.
“It states that the trust cannot be transferred, frozen, or seized unless the beneficiary voluntarily relinquishes control.”
Mia stared.
“They can't take it.”
“No.”
The judge continued reading.
“And there's another clause.”
“What?”
The judge looked uncomfortable.
“Anyone who knowingly attempts to manipulate, defraud, or discredit the beneficiary becomes permanently disqualified from receiving any benefit from the trust.”
Mia slowly turned toward Victoria.
Victoria's face had gone white.
Ethan understood.
“That means Victoria…”
“Yes,” the judge said.
“She has disqualified herself.”
The courtroom erupted.
Victoria stood.
“No!”
She looked at Catherine.
“You promised me!”
Catherine's expression remained cold.
“I promised you nothing.”
Victoria turned toward her.
“You said I would get everything!”
“I said you would get what you earned.”
Victoria's voice cracked.
“I did everything!”
Catherine smiled.
“And now you have done enough.”
Victoria stared at her.
Then suddenly laughed.
A broken, desperate laugh.
“You're all fools.”
She turned toward Mia.
“You think you're safe?”
Security moved closer.
Victoria pointed at Mia.
“You still don't know what your mother did.”
Mia froze.
“What?”
Victoria smiled.
“Ask her.”
Ethan stepped forward.
“What did Elena do?”
Victoria shook her head.
“Not Elena.”
She looked directly at Mia.
“Your real father.”
Mia's face went pale.
“My father?”
Victoria whispered:
“He isn't Richard.”
Silence.
Ethan looked at Mia.
Mia couldn't breathe.
Victoria continued.
“Richard protected you because he wasn't your father.”
A gasp swept through the courtroom.
“Your real father…”
Victoria smiled.
“…is the man who is about to inherit everything if you die.”
Mia's eyes widened.
“Who?”
Victoria's smile disappeared.
Because suddenly she realized something.
She shouldn't have said it.
But it was too late.
Mia turned toward Catherine.
“Who is my father?”
Catherine stared at her.
Then quietly answered:
“Lucas Cole.”
Ethan froze.
His brother.
Mia's biological father.
The courtroom went silent.
And somewhere outside the courthouse, a car pulled away.
Inside it sat Lucas.
Holding Lily and Noah's hands.
Watching the courthouse through the window.
He whispered:
“I'm sorry, Mia.”
Then he looked toward the children.
“Your mother was never supposed to find out this way.”
May you like
The car disappeared into traffic.
And the trial that had begun as an attempt to destroy Mia's reputation had just uncovered a secret capable of destroying the entire Cole family.
