CHAPTER 6 — THE SOCIALITE'S WAR

CHAPTER 6 — THE SOCIALITE'S WAR

By the time Ethan reached the second floor, the mansion was no longer a home.

It was a battlefield.

Every light had returned.

Every alarm was screaming.

Security guards were running through the corridors.

And somewhere beyond the locked doors of the children's wing, Victoria was holding a gun.

“Mia, stay behind me.”

Mia grabbed his arm.

“Ethan, the children—”

“I know.”

They ran.

The nursery door stood open.

But Victoria was gone.

Ethan stopped.

His eyes swept across the room.

The beds were empty.

The windows were open.

Mia's heart nearly stopped.

“No.”

She rushed inside.

“Lily!”

No answer.

“Noah!”

Nothing.

Ethan ran to the window.

A rope hung over the balcony.

His face went white.

“She took them.”

Mia shook her head.

“No.”

Ethan turned toward her.

“She couldn't have.”

Then a small voice came from beneath the bed.

“Daddy?”

Ethan froze.

Mia dropped to her knees.

“Noah?”

A tiny face appeared.

Noah crawled out, shaking.

Mia pulled him into her arms.

“Where's Lily?”

He pointed toward the closet.

“She told me to hide.”

Ethan opened the closet.

Lily was inside.

She ran directly into his arms.

“Daddy!”

He held both children.

“Are you hurt?”

They shook their heads.

Mia pressed her hands over her mouth.

Relief nearly brought her to tears.

But then Ethan noticed something.

The children weren't frightened of Victoria.

They were frightened of someone else.

“Who told you to hide?”

Lily looked toward the hallway.

“A lady.”

“What lady?”

“The one who came before Mommy.”

Ethan's expression changed.

“What does she look like?”

Lily thought.

“She had white hair.”

Mia looked at Ethan.

“Evelyn?”

He didn't answer.

Because Evelyn Hart was supposed to be dead.

The police arrived ten minutes later.

The mansion was searched from top to bottom.

Victoria was gone.

No car.

No footprints.

No weapon.

No evidence.

Nothing.

It was as if she had vanished.

Except for one thing.

Her phone.

It was sitting on the dining room table.

Ethan stared at it.

“She wouldn't leave without this.”

His security chief picked it up.

“Unless she wanted us to find it.”

Ethan looked at the screen.

There was one notification.

A social media post.

Victoria had already published it.

A photograph of herself appeared beneath a headline:

BEVERLY HILLS SOCIALITE ATTACKED IN HER OWN HOME.

Ethan's face hardened.

The post continued.

“I never imagined I would have to fear for my life inside the home I shared with the man I loved.”

Below it was a photograph of her bruised wrist.

Then another.

A close-up of the Rolex.

Then a third.

Mia.

Standing beside the children.

The caption read:

“Some people enter wealthy homes pretending to be caretakers. Sometimes they have other intentions.”

Mia stared at the screen.

Her face went pale.

“She took that photograph.”

Ethan nodded.

“When?”

“Yesterday.”

The security chief looked up.

“She was planning this.”

Ethan's jaw tightened.

“Yes.”

Within minutes, the post exploded across the internet.

Thousands of comments appeared.

Poor Victoria.

That nanny should be arrested.

Rich people really can't trust anyone.

I heard the nanny attacked her.

Mia looked at Ethan.

“This is happening because of me.”

“No.”

“She used me.”

“She used everyone.”

Mia stared at the screen.

“She knows how to make people believe her.”

Ethan's eyes hardened.

“Then we'll make them believe the truth.”

By morning, Victoria's lawyer appeared on television.

A tall man in an expensive suit sat beneath studio lights.

“My client has suffered months of psychological abuse.”

The interviewer leaned forward.

“By whom?”

The lawyer hesitated.

Then said:

“By an employee who became dangerously obsessed with the Cole family.”

Mia watched the interview from Ethan's office.

Her stomach turned.

The lawyer continued.

“There were concerns about missing valuables.”

“Was the Rolex stolen?”

“We believe so.”

Mia stood.

“He knows it's a lie.”

Ethan remained silent.

“Why doesn't he say anything?”

“Because Victoria isn't fighting this alone.”

Mia turned toward him.

“What do you mean?”

He pointed at the television.

“Look behind him.”

Mia looked.

A man stood in the background.

Gray hair.

Dark suit.

Cold expression.

She recognized him.

“That's Marcus.”

Ethan nodded.

“My brother.”

“Why is he there?”

“I don't know.”

The interviewer asked another question.

“Is Mr. Cole supporting his wife?”

The lawyer smiled.

“Absolutely.”

Mia looked at Ethan.

“That means Marcus is helping her.”

“Apparently.”

“Why?”

Ethan stared at the screen.

“I think he's afraid.”

“Of Victoria?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Ethan's answer was barely audible.

“The people behind her.”

At noon, Victoria made her next move.

A lawsuit.

She accused Mia of theft.

Assault.

Harassment.

Emotional distress.

And attempted extortion.

The accusations were absurd.

But the filing contained photographs.

Medical records.

Security reports.

Witness statements.

Everything appeared perfectly organized.

Mia stared at the documents.

“This is impossible.”

Ethan looked through them.

“They fabricated most of this.”

“How can you prove it?”

“I can't.”

She looked at him.

“Not yet.”

The words were exactly what she needed to hear.

But then Ethan opened the final page.

His expression changed.

Mia noticed.

“What?”

He handed her the document.

It was a financial agreement.

Between Ethan and Victoria.

Mia read the first paragraph.

Then the second.

Her eyes widened.

“What is this?”

“A marriage agreement.”

“You signed this?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Six months ago.”

Mia looked at him.

“Why?”

“I don't remember signing it.”

“What do you mean?”

Ethan stared at the signature.

It looked exactly like his.

But he knew he had never signed the document.

Mia whispered:

“Another forgery.”

Ethan nodded.

The agreement gave Victoria control over a significant portion of Ethan's assets if he were declared mentally incompetent.

Mia looked up.

“They're trying to take everything.”

“Not everything.”

“What else?”

Ethan pointed to one clause.

“If I disappear…”

Mia stopped reading.

“If you disappear?”

Ethan continued.

“…temporary control of the Cole Family Trust transfers to the named guardian.”

“Who is the guardian?”

He didn't answer.

Mia read the name.

Her blood ran cold.

Victoria Ashford.

That evening, the war became personal.

Someone leaked Mia's address.

By six o'clock, reporters were outside her apartment.

By seven, strangers were shouting accusations from the sidewalk.

By eight, someone threw a brick through her window.

Mia stood frozen.

Ethan's security team surrounded the building.

“You can't stay here,” he said.

“I don't have anywhere else.”

“You're coming with us.”

“Back to the mansion?”

“Yes.”

“No.”

“Mia—”

“No.”

She looked at the broken window.

“They want me there.”

Ethan stared.

“Exactly.”

“They want me frightened.”

“Yes.”

“They want me to run.”

“Yes.”

Mia wiped her eyes.

“Then I'm not running.”

Ethan looked at her.

For the first time, he saw something different.

Not fear.

Defiance.

“Good.”

At midnight, Ethan received an invitation.

A charity gala.

Hosted by Victoria.

Tomorrow night.

Mia stared at the message.

“She wants you there.”

“I know.”

“Why?”

Ethan read the final line.

COME ALONE. BRING NO LAWYERS.

Mia shook her head.

“It's a trap.”

“Yes.”

“Then don't go.”

Ethan looked at her.

“I have to.”

“No.”

“If I don't, she'll release something.”

“What?”

“I don't know.”

Mia stepped closer.

“Then we'll find out before tomorrow.”

Ethan looked at her.

“How?”

Mia pointed toward the security room.

“The second camera.”

“What about it?”

“You said they destroyed the system.”

“They destroyed the hidden network.”

Mia's eyes narrowed.

“But not necessarily the storage.”

Ethan understood.

They returned to the underground room.

The computers were dead.

But one hard drive remained intact.

They connected it.

A folder appeared.

GALA — ORIGINAL FOOTAGE

Ethan opened it.

The video showed Victoria meeting someone.

The same hidden man.

But this time, his face became visible.

Ethan stared.

His breathing stopped.

Mia looked at him.

“Who is that?”

Ethan whispered:

“My uncle.”

“Your uncle?”

“Richard's younger brother.”

“Where is he now?”

Ethan's face turned pale.

“He died twenty years ago.”

Mia stared at the screen.

The man looked directly into the camera.

And smiled.

Then the video changed.

A second recording appeared.

The man was speaking to someone else.

Someone whose face remained hidden.

His voice was unmistakable.

“We found the heir.”

The hidden person asked:

“And the nanny?”

The man smiled.

“She doesn't know she's the heir.”

Mia stopped breathing.

Then came the sentence that changed everything.

“Once she learns the truth, Ethan will have no choice but to protect her.”

A pause.

“And once Ethan protects her…”

The man smiled.

“…we control them both.”

The recording ended.

Mia looked at Ethan.

“They planned all of this.”

“Yes.”

“For years.”

“Yes.”

“Even me becoming the nanny.”

“Yes.”

She whispered:

“Then Victoria was never the beginning.”

Ethan shook his head.

“No.”

Mia looked at the screen.

“She's just a weapon.”

Ethan nodded.

“And tomorrow night…”

He looked toward the invitation.

“…she intends to fire it in front of everyone.”

The next evening, Beverly Hills gathered beneath crystal chandeliers.

Politicians.

Actors.

Billionaires.

Investors.

Journalists.

Every powerful person in the city had been invited.

And at exactly eight o'clock—

Victoria entered.

She wore a white gown.

Diamonds around her neck.

A smile on her face.

She looked like innocence itself.

The room erupted in applause.

Then the lights dimmed.

Victoria stepped onto the stage.

“Tonight,” she said softly, “I want to tell you the truth.”

A giant screen appeared behind her.

A photograph of Mia filled it.

The crowd murmured.

Victoria's voice trembled perfectly.

“This woman destroyed my home.”

Mia stood at the back of the room beside Ethan.

Her heart pounded.

Victoria continued.

“She stole from us.”

Another photograph appeared.

The Rolex.

Then a picture of Mia crying.

Then her bruised wrist.

The audience turned toward Mia.

Whispers spread.

Victoria looked directly at her.

“And tonight…”

She smiled.

“…I will finally reveal what she has been hiding.”

Ethan's expression hardened.

Mia froze.

Victoria pressed a button.

The screen changed.

A medical document appeared.

Mia's name.

Her mother's name.

And beneath them—

RICHARD COLE — BIOLOGICAL FATHER.

The room exploded with whispers.

Mia couldn't breathe.

Victoria smiled.

But then Ethan noticed something.

The document was different from the original file they had discovered.

One detail had been changed.

The date.

Ethan stared.

“It's fake.”

Victoria turned toward him.

“Is it?”

Ethan stepped forward.

The crowd fell silent.

Victoria raised the microphone.

“Then perhaps Mr. Cole should explain why his father secretly had a daughter.”

Mia looked at Ethan.

He looked back at her.

And in that moment, they both understood.

Victoria had just started the biggest war the Cole family had ever seen.

But she had made one fatal mistake.

She had put the truth on a giant screen.

And Ethan had proof that the document was forged.

He reached into his jacket.

Pulled out a flash drive.

Then smiled.

“Thank you, Victoria.”

Her smile disappeared.

“Because now everyone is watching.”

And the screen behind her suddenly went black.

A new video appeared.

The hidden recording.

Victoria meeting the mysterious man.

Her voice.

His voice.

Their plan.

The room erupted.

Victoria turned white.

“No.”

Ethan looked at her.

“Yes.”

Then the recording played the one sentence Victoria never expected the world to hear.

“The nanny doesn't know she's the heir.”

The crowd went silent.

Mia stared at the screen.

Victoria stared at Ethan.

And somewhere in the room, a man quietly walked toward the exit.

Ethan saw him.

The man looked back.

And smiled.

It was the same smile from the recording.

The man Victoria believed was dead.

Ethan's blood ran cold.

“Stop him!”

But the man disappeared into the crowd.

And Victoria whispered:

“You have no idea what you've just started.”

Ethan turned toward her.

“No.”

He looked at Mia.

May you like

“For the first time…”

“…I think we do.”
