CHAPTER 2 — THE PERFECT LIE

CHAPTER 2 — THE PERFECT LIE
By midnight, the house had become unnaturally quiet.
Too quiet.
The children were asleep.
The staff had been sent home.
The police had not yet arrived because Ethan had stopped them from calling.
Not because he wanted to protect Victoria.
Because he wanted answers first.
Mia sat alone in the guest room with an ice pack pressed against her shoulder.
She had changed out of her uniform.
But she still felt as though the accusation was clinging to her skin.
Thief.
Liar.
Gold digger.
The words kept replaying in her head.
A soft knock sounded.
Mia looked up.
Ethan stood outside.
“May I come in?”
She nodded.
He entered but remained near the door.
“I had the doctor come by.”
“I don't need one.”
“You fell hard.”
“I've had worse.”
His eyes moved toward her shoulder.
“Because of Victoria?”
Mia hesitated.
“Because of life.”
Ethan studied her.
“You don't have to protect her.”
“I wasn't.”
“You said you've had worse.”
“I meant…”
She stopped.
Ethan waited.
Mia looked down.
“My father was sick for years. There were hospital bills. Debt collectors. Things happen.”
“You worked before becoming a nanny.”
She looked at him.
“How much did you investigate me?”
“Enough to know you aren't a thief.”
A bitter smile crossed her face.
“You knew that before tonight?”
“I suspected it.”
“That's comforting.”
“I should have stopped Victoria before she touched you.”
Mia looked at him.
“Yes.”
The answer surprised him.
Mia lowered her eyes.
“Sorry.”
“Don't apologize.”
“You're my employer.”
“Not tonight.”
She looked up.
“What does that mean?”
“It means someone tried to destroy your life in my house.”
Ethan's voice hardened.
“And I intend to find out why.”
At the other end of the mansion, Victoria stood before the mirror.
Her face was wet with tears.
But she wasn't crying anymore.
She removed her earrings.
Placed them carefully on the marble counter.
Then looked at her reflection.
The frightened wife was gone.
The grieving socialite was gone.
Only calculation remained.
Her phone vibrated.
She answered immediately.
“He saw the footage.”
A man's voice came through.
“Does he know about the account?”
“No.”
“Does he know about the watch?”
“He knows someone wanted it.”
Silence.
Victoria lowered her voice.
“He's suspicious.”
“Then accelerate the divorce plan.”
Her eyes narrowed.
“You said I had six months.”
“You had six months before you made a mistake.”
Victoria clenched her jaw.
“Don't talk to me like that.”
The man laughed.
“You wanted Ethan's money.”
“I want more than money.”
“What?”
She looked toward the hallway.
“I want his name.”
“You can't have his name if he's alive long enough to expose you.”
Victoria went silent.
Then whispered:
“What do you want me to do?”
“Make him believe Mia attacked you.”
Victoria's eyes widened.
“She's already innocent.”
“That doesn't matter.”
“What are you talking about?”
“People don't believe evidence.”
“They believe stories.”
The call ended.
Victoria stared at her phone.
Then slowly smiled.
The next morning, the perfect lie began.
Victoria didn't attack Mia.
She didn't accuse her directly.
She simply appeared at breakfast wearing a long sleeve blouse.
Her left wrist was wrapped in a bandage.
Ethan looked at it.
“What happened?”
Victoria lowered her eyes.
“Nothing.”
Mia was standing near the kitchen doorway.
She immediately knew.
Ethan looked between them.
“Victoria.”
“I don't want another argument.”
“What happened to your wrist?”
She hesitated.
Then whispered:
“I fell.”
Ethan stared.
“You fell?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“On the stairs.”
Mia's stomach tightened.
Victoria looked at her.
“I don't want to make this worse.”
Mia stepped forward.
“Make what worse?”
Victoria immediately looked frightened.
“Nothing.”
“Mia,” Ethan said quietly.
Victoria shook her head.
“Please don't.”
Mia stared.
“Don't what?”
Victoria's eyes filled with tears.
“Don't pretend you don't know.”
The room went silent.
Ethan looked at Mia.
Mia's face went pale.
“I didn't touch her.”
Victoria quickly replied:
“I never said you did.”
“But you're implying it.”
“I don't want to fight.”
“You're doing this again.”
Victoria stood.
“Mia, please.”
“No.”
Mia's voice became stronger.
“You don't get to hurt me and then pretend you're the victim.”
Victoria flinched.
Ethan watched carefully.
Then Victoria whispered:
“See?”
Mia froze.
Victoria looked at Ethan.
“This is exactly what I was afraid of.”
Ethan's expression changed.
Victoria grabbed her purse.
“I'll leave.”
“Stop.”
Ethan's voice was firm.
She turned.
“Where were you last night?”
“At home.”
“After the incident.”
“I went upstairs.”
“Did you speak to anyone?”
“No.”
Ethan looked at Mia.
“Mia?”
“I went to my room.”
He nodded.
Then looked at Victoria.
“Who wrapped your wrist?”
Victoria hesitated.
“I did.”
Ethan didn't believe her.
“Why?”
“Because it hurt.”
He walked toward her.
“Show me.”
Victoria instinctively pulled her arm away.
“It's nothing.”
“Victoria.”
She slowly removed the bandage.
There was barely a mark.
Mia stared.
“That isn't from a fall.”
Victoria immediately covered it again.
Ethan's face hardened.
“Who did that?”
Victoria said nothing.
“Mia?”
“No.”
“Victoria.”
She finally whispered:
“I don't know.”
Ethan stared at her.
“You don't know who injured you?”
“I was upset.”
“That doesn't answer the question.”
She began crying.
Then she said the sentence she had been waiting to say.
“I think Mia is dangerous.”
Mia's heart sank.
Within hours, the story spread.
Victoria hadn't officially accused Mia.
She didn't need to.
A few carefully chosen conversations were enough.
A friend at a charity luncheon.
A text to a journalist.
A private message to one of Beverly Hills' most influential gossip accounts.
By afternoon, rumors were everywhere.
Billionaire's nanny becomes violent after being confronted over stolen heirloom.
Marriage crisis inside the Cole mansion.
Did Ethan Cole's nanny attack his wife?
Mia stared at her phone.
Her hands shook.
“They're lying.”
Ethan stood behind her.
“I know.”
“You know?”
“Yes.”
“Then why isn't anyone stopping them?”
“Because Victoria understands something.”
“What?”
“She doesn't need to prove you guilty.”
Ethan took the phone from her.
“She only needs people to believe you're suspicious.”
Mia looked at him.
“Can you stop her?”
“Yes.”
“Then why aren't you?”
He looked toward the window.
“Because I want to know who she's working for.”
Mia's expression changed.
“You think there's someone else?”
“I know there is.”
That evening, Ethan called his head of security.
“Show me every camera recording from the last seventy-two hours.”
“All of them?”
“All.”
“That's nearly four thousand feeds.”
“Then start.”
They worked until three in the morning.
Nothing.
Then Ethan noticed something.
A six-minute gap.
Not in the camera.
In the backup server.
He stared at the screen.
“That's impossible.”
His security chief frowned.
“What?”
“The system doesn't have gaps.”
“Could someone have deleted it?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because the backup is automatic.”
Ethan leaned closer.
“Then someone didn't delete the footage.”
His voice became quiet.
“They replaced it.”
At 3:17 AM, the system suddenly generated an alert.
UNAUTHORIZED DEVICE DETECTED.
Ethan looked at the screen.
A location appeared.
The device was inside the mansion.
His eyes narrowed.
“Wake everyone.”
Mia woke to pounding on her door.
She opened it.
Ethan stood outside.
“Get dressed.”
“What happened?”
“Someone is inside the house.”
Her heart stopped.
“What?”
He grabbed a flashlight.
“Stay behind me.”
They walked into the hallway.
The mansion was dark.
Then they heard something.
A soft metallic click.
From Ethan's office.
They approached.
Ethan opened the door.
Nothing.
The window was closed.
The desk was untouched.
The safe was locked.
Then Mia noticed something.
“Ethan.”
“What?”
She pointed.
The security monitor was on.
But the screen showed something impossible.
It showed the two of them standing in the hallway.
Live.
Ethan stared.
“That camera isn't connected to this monitor.”
Mia whispered:
“Then how is it showing us?”
A red light blinked.
Someone was watching them.
Right now.
Ethan immediately pulled the power cable.
The screen went black.
Then his phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
He opened the message.
A photograph appeared.
It showed Mia and Ethan standing outside the office.
The photograph had been taken seconds earlier.
Underneath was one sentence:
STOP LOOKING FOR THE TRUTH.
Mia looked at Ethan.
“Who is doing this?”
He didn't answer.
Another message arrived.
OR NEXT TIME, THE CHILDREN WILL BE THE ONES WHO PAY.
Ethan's face changed completely.
He turned toward the hallway.
“Get the children.”
Mia ran.
But before Ethan could follow—
every light in the mansion switched off.
And somewhere upstairs, Lily screamed.
Ethan sprinted toward the stairs.
Mia followed.
The perfect lie had just become something far more dangerous.
Because someone had entered their game.
And this time—
May you like
they weren't trying to steal a Rolex.
They were coming for the children.
