CHAPTER 5

CHAPTER 5

The Hidden Contract

The first rule of the Thorne family was simple.

Never show weakness.

Marcus Thorne had followed that rule since childhood.

When his father lost a major business deal, he never admitted fear.

When competitors attacked the company, he never showed anger.

When enemies tried to destroy him, he smiled.

Because power belonged to the person who remained calm when everyone else panicked.

But there was one thing Marcus had never learned how to control.

The fear of losing the people he loved.

And now, for the first time in years, his own past had become the weapon pointed directly at his family.

The Thorne mansion had never felt so cold.

It was supposed to be a place of comfort.

A place where Marcus and Khloe could build their future.

A place where their child would grow up surrounded by love.

But since the attack, every hallway felt different.

Every shadow felt suspicious.

Every silence felt like someone was hiding something.

Khloe sat in the private library, looking through old photographs.

Not because she wanted to investigate Marcus.

Because she wanted to understand.

Five years of marriage.

Five years of memories.

Five years of believing she knew the man beside her.

And suddenly, one woman from his past had made her question everything.

She hated that feeling.

She hated that Isabella had managed to enter their home without even being there.

"You're looking for answers."

Marcus's voice interrupted her thoughts.

Khloe looked up.

He stood near the doorway.

Tired.

Not the tiredness caused by work.

The tiredness of someone fighting a battle inside himself.

"Maybe."

Marcus walked closer.

"I wish you didn't have to."

Khloe looked at him.

"I wish you had told me."

The silence returned.

Because there was no defense against that.

"I was afraid."

The honesty surprised her.

Marcus Thorne admitting fear was something almost impossible.

"Of what?"

He sat across from her.

"Of losing you."

Khloe looked away.

"You should have trusted me enough to know the truth."

"I know."

"No, Marcus."

Her voice softened.

"But I need you to understand."

She touched the photograph in her hand.

"I don't care that you had a past."

"I care that Isabella can use your past against us."

Marcus lowered his eyes.

Because that was exactly what was happening.

Meanwhile, Isabella Rossi was preparing her next move.

The attack had failed.

The evidence had destroyed her first plan.

But Isabella had never depended on one strategy.

People underestimated her because they saw beauty first.

They saw the designer dresses.

The charity appearances.

The perfect smile.

They never saw the woman underneath.

The woman who spent years studying people.

Learning their weaknesses.

Finding their secrets.

And Marcus Thorne had one weakness.

He believed protecting people meant keeping painful truths away from them.

Isabella knew better.

Secrets did not disappear.

They waited.

She sat across from her father, Alessandro Rossi.

The Rossi family had built their fortune through investments, luxury brands, and political connections.

Alessandro was old-fashioned.

Cold.

A man who believed emotions were weaknesses.

"You embarrassed this family."

Those were his first words.

Not:

Are you okay?

Not:

What happened?

Only disappointment.

Isabella smiled slightly.

"You still think reputation matters more than winning."

Her father looked at her.

"Winning?"

"Yes."

She placed a folder on the table.

"You know what Marcus is afraid of?"

Alessandro didn't answer.

"Not losing money."

She opened the folder.

"Not losing power."

She tapped the documents.

"He is afraid of losing Khloe."

Her father studied her.

"And you think hurting his wife will bring him back?"

"No."

Isabella smiled.

"I think making him lose trust in her will."

That evening, Daniel Parker contacted Marcus.

"Meet me."

The message was short.

Marcus arrived at a private office inside the hospital.

Daniel was waiting.

On the desk were several documents.

"I found something."

Marcus looked at the files.

"What?"

Daniel opened the first page.

"Someone accessed Khloe's personal information before the attack."

Marcus's expression changed.

"What kind of information?"

"Medical records."

The room became silent.

"Why?"

Daniel shook his head.

"I don't know yet."

Marcus looked through the documents.

The access logs.

The timestamps.

The names.

Then he saw something.

A familiar name.

"Impossible."

Daniel watched him.

"You know this person?"

Marcus did not answer immediately.

Because the name belonged to someone inside his own world.

Someone he trusted.

Someone who had attended the gala.

Someone who had known exactly where Khloe would be.

Before Marcus could investigate further, another scandal exploded.

A leaked document appeared online.

The headline spread within minutes.

THE THORNE MARRIAGE: LOVE OR BUSINESS ARRANGEMENT?

Marcus stared at the screen.

The document was a contract.

A marriage agreement.

Signed years ago.

The public reacted immediately.

Thousands of comments appeared.

They believed they had discovered the truth.

That Marcus and Khloe's marriage was not built on love.

That Khloe had married into wealth through an agreement.

That the perfect romance was a lie.

But Marcus knew something.

The document was real.

And that made it dangerous.

Khloe saw the news before Marcus could tell her.

When he arrived home, she was already waiting.

The contract was on the table.

Her face was pale.

"Is this real?"

Marcus stopped.

There was no point lying.

"Yes."

The answer broke something.

Not because of the contract.

Because of how easily the truth came from someone else.

"When were you going to tell me?"

Marcus remained silent.

Khloe laughed softly.

A painful sound.

"Again?"

"Khloe..."

"Again, Marcus?"

She stood.

"You keep saying you want to protect me."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"But every secret you hide becomes another weapon someone can use against me."

Marcus stepped closer.

"I can explain."

"Then explain."

He opened his mouth.

But before he could speak...

The doorbell rang.

Neither of them moved.

Marcus looked toward the entrance.

A security officer entered.

"Mr. Thorne."

"What happened?"

The officer held out an envelope.

"This was delivered personally."

Marcus took it.

No sender.

No name.

Inside was a single piece of paper.

Only one sentence.

ASK YOUR WIFE WHY HER NAME WAS ON THIS CONTRACT BEFORE SHE EVER MET YOU.

Marcus froze.

Khloe saw his expression.

"What is it?"

He didn't answer.

Because suddenly the contract was not just a secret from his past.

It involved Khloe.

And that made no sense.

Unless...

Unless the entire relationship between Marcus and Khloe had started from a truth neither of them knew.

Later that night, Daniel discovered the missing piece.

He traced the leaked contract.

It had not come from Isabella.

It had not come from the media.

It had come from someone inside the Thorne family.

Someone with access.

Someone with a reason.

The name appeared on his screen.

Daniel stared.

"No..."

Because the person behind the leak was not an enemy.

It was family.

At the same time, Isabella sat alone in her apartment.

She opened an old file.

Inside was a photograph.

Marcus.

Khloe.

And another person standing beside them.

Someone nobody remembered.

She smiled.

"The truth always comes back."

She closed the file.

"The only difference is..."

Her eyes hardened.

May you like

"...who survives when it does."
