CHAPTER 8

CHAPTER 8

The Trial Begins

The courtroom was never designed to reveal the truth.

It was designed to reveal who could convince people of their version of it.

Every person who entered those doors carried a story.

A victim.

A suspect.

A witness.

A liar.

And on the morning Isabella Rossi faced judgment, the world waited to see which one she would become.

The courthouse steps were covered with reporters.

Cameras surrounded the entrance.

Microphones pushed forward.

Everyone wanted a reaction.

Everyone wanted a headline.

Because this was not just a criminal case.

It involved the most powerful family in the country.

The Thornes.

And the woman accused of attacking them.

Isabella Rossi.

The socialite who once appeared on magazine covers.

The woman who attended charity events beside presidents and billionaires.

The woman who had built an entire identity around being untouchable.

Now she walked into court surrounded by lawyers.

Not admirers.

Not friends.

Lawyers.

And for the first time in years, Isabella Rossi looked like someone who could actually lose.

Inside the courtroom, Marcus sat beside Khloe.

The cameras were not allowed inside.

But everyone knew they were there.

Watching.

Waiting.

Khloe wore a simple dark blue dress.

No expensive jewelry.

No attempt to impress anyone.

She had learned something important.

The truth did not need decoration.

Marcus looked at her.

"You don't have to be here."

Khloe kept her eyes forward.

"Yes, I do."

"Khloe..."

She turned toward him.

"She attacked me."

A pause.

"She tried to hurt our child."

Her voice remained calm.

"But I am not here because I hate her."

Marcus studied her.

"Then why?"

Khloe looked toward Isabella sitting across the courtroom.

"Because I want the truth to matter."

The judge entered.

Everyone stood.

The trial began.

The prosecutor presented the case.

The evidence.

The timeline.

The security footage.

The medical records.

The witness statements.

One by one, the pieces came together.

The courtroom watched the video.

The same video that had destroyed Isabella's carefully created image.

The room became silent as the footage played.

Isabella approaching.

The argument.

The shove.

The kick.

The lie.

When the video ended, nobody spoke.

The prosecutor looked at the jury.

"That was not an accident."

His voice was firm.

"It was not self-defense."

A pause.

"It was a deliberate attack."

Then came Isabella's defense.

And everyone knew this was the moment she had been waiting for.

Her lawyer, Adrian Cole, stood.

He was one of the most expensive defense attorneys in the country.

A man known for turning impossible cases around.

He looked at the jury.

"Ladies and gentlemen."

He spoke slowly.

"Today you have seen a video."

He paused.

"But a video is only a moment."

The prosecutor frowned.

Adrian continued.

"You have not seen everything that happened before."

Marcus's expression changed.

Khloe noticed.

Because this was exactly what Isabella wanted.

Confusion.

Doubt.

A different story.

Adrian walked toward the jury.

"My client made a terrible mistake."

A surprise.

Even Isabella looked at him.

"She admits she acted emotionally."

The courtroom became quiet.

"But emotion is not the same as intention."

He looked toward Khloe.

"Mrs. Thorne and my client had a complicated relationship."

A careful choice of words.

"One filled with jealousy, misunderstandings, and pain."

Then he turned back.

"The question is not whether something happened."

He pointed toward the screen.

"The question is why."

The prosecutor immediately objected.

"Speculation."

The judge allowed limited discussion.

Adrian smiled.

Because that was enough.

He had planted the seed.

And seeds were dangerous.

The first witness was Elaine Parker.

The charity event coordinator.

She walked to the stand.

The prosecutor questioned her.

"Ms. Parker, what did you see when you entered the suite?"

Elaine looked toward Khloe.

Then Isabella.

"I saw Mrs. Thorne on the floor."

"And Ms. Rossi?"

"Standing above her."

"Did Mrs. Thorne appear aggressive?"

Elaine shook her head.

"No."

"Did Ms. Rossi appear afraid?"

Elaine hesitated.

The courtroom noticed.

The prosecutor stepped closer.

"Ms. Parker?"

"At first..."

She swallowed.

"Yes."

Adrian stood.

"Objection."

The judge allowed him to continue.

Elaine looked uncomfortable.

Because she remembered.

The moment Isabella changed.

The moment the victim disappeared.

The moment the actress appeared.

Then came the witness nobody expected.

A nurse from the private hospital wing.

Her name was Clara Bennett.

She entered quietly.

The courtroom became curious.

Because she had not been on the original witness list.

The prosecutor approached.

"Ms. Bennett, do you know Mrs. Thorne?"

"Yes."

"How?"

The nurse looked toward Khloe.

"I treated her during her pregnancy."

"And did you notice anything unusual before the attack?"

Clara hesitated.

Then answered:

"Yes."

Everyone became alert.

"What did you notice?"

"Mrs. Thorne had been receiving anonymous messages."

Marcus immediately looked at Khloe.

"What?"

Khloe's expression changed.

She had never told him.

The prosecutor continued.

"How long?"

"Several weeks."

"Did she report them?"

"No."

"Why?"

The nurse looked at Khloe.

"She didn't want to create more problems."

The courtroom became silent.

Marcus felt something painful.

Because Khloe had been suffering alone.

Again.

Adrian stood for cross-examination.

"Ms. Bennett."

"Yes?"

"You said Mrs. Thorne received anonymous messages?"

"Yes."

"Do you know who sent them?"

"No."

"Then you don't know if my client sent them."

The nurse stayed silent.

Adrian smiled.

"Thank you."

A small victory.

But Marcus noticed something.

Adrian was not trying to prove Isabella innocent.

Not completely.

He was trying to create uncertainty.

And that was dangerous.

During the lunch break, Marcus confronted Isabella's lawyer.

"You know she did it."

Adrian looked at him.

"I know many things."

"Then why defend her?"

"Because everyone deserves a defense."

Marcus stepped closer.

"No."

His voice lowered.

"Because you know something else."

Adrian said nothing.

That was the answer.

Back inside the courtroom, Isabella finally testified.

The woman everyone had been waiting for.

She walked to the stand with confidence.

No tears.

No fear.

Just control.

The prosecutor approached.

"Ms. Rossi, did you attack Khloe Thorne?"

Isabella looked directly at him.

"No."

A wave of whispers moved through the room.

The prosecutor remained calm.

"We have video evidence."

"Yes."

"You are saying the video is false?"

"No."

"Then explain it."

Isabella looked at Khloe.

Then Marcus.

And smiled sadly.

"I was trying to protect him."

Marcus's face hardened.

"Protect who?"

She answered softly.

"Marcus."

The courtroom exploded.

The judge demanded silence.

Isabella continued.

"I never wanted to hurt Khloe."

She looked down.

"But I knew something about Marcus that she didn't."

Khloe felt her heart sink.

Again.

The same secret.

The same threat.

The prosecutor frowned.

"What does that have to do with the attack?"

Isabella looked at the jury.

"Everything."

Then she said the words that changed the entire trial.

"Khloe Thorne was never supposed to become Marcus's wife."

Silence.

Complete silence.

Marcus stood immediately.

The judge ordered him to sit.

Khloe looked at him.

Her face showed one question.

What does she mean?

Isabella continued.

"Because before Marcus met Khloe..."

She paused.

"Someone had already decided who he would marry."

The courtroom erupted.

The judge called for order.

But it was too late.

The damage had been done.

Because Isabella had achieved exactly what she wanted.

She had turned the trial from a question about her crime...

into a question about the Thorne family's secrets.

That evening, after court ended, Marcus received a message.

From Daniel.

Only three words.

I found it.

Marcus called immediately.

"What?"

Daniel's voice sounded serious.

"The original contract."

Marcus froze.

"Where?"

A pause.

"Hidden inside the old Thorne family archives."

Marcus felt a chill.

"Who signed it?"

Daniel answered.

And when he heard the name...

Marcus stopped breathing.

Because the signature belonged to someone impossible.

Someone who should never have been involved.

Someone who changed everything.

May you like

Khloe's father.
