Chapter 10

Chapter 10

Twenty Years of Murder

For years, Detective Daniel Brooks believed he was investigating one attempted murder.

Then one suspicious death.

Now the case had become something else entirely.

A pattern.

And patterns were far more dangerous than isolated crimes.

Because patterns meant intention.

Patterns meant planning.

Patterns meant someone had been getting away with murder for a very long time.

The handwritten note from the forensic laboratory refused to leave Brooks' mind.

The fetus may have had a living sibling.

It shouldn't have been possible.

Olivia Bennett had never given birth.

Every official record confirmed that.

So where had the sibling come from?

Or perhaps...

Who had disappeared?

Brooks requested every birth, adoption, guardianship, and hospital record connected to the Caldwell family over the past twenty-five years.

By evening, the conference table in the Sheriff's Office was buried beneath stacks of files.

Officer Hernandez rubbed his tired eyes.

"We've searched thousands of pages."

"Anything?"

"Nothing."

Brooks remained quiet.

Nothing wasn't normal.

Wealthy families left paper trails.

Trust funds.

Schools.

Doctors.

Insurance.

A missing child should have existed somewhere.

Unless someone had erased every trace.

At my apartment, life had become strangely quiet.

The police maintained a twenty-four-hour guard outside.

Sarah stayed with me almost every day.

My pregnancy was progressing, but the emotional weight of the investigation lingered.

Sometimes I caught myself staring at the empty crib we had ordered months earlier.

Ryan had insisted on assembling it himself.

He never finished.

Neither had our marriage.

Sarah interrupted my thoughts.

"You keep blaming yourself."

I looked at her.

"For what?"

"For staying so long."

I smiled sadly.

"I loved him."

"I know."

"But love isn't supposed to require survival."

Meanwhile...

Ryan sat alone in his late grandfather's private library.

Most of the family's documents had already been seized.

Only a few old journals remained.

His grandfather, Edward Caldwell, had kept meticulous records.

Business meetings.

Charity events.

Family gatherings.

Ryan flipped through page after page.

Then one sentence stopped him.

Charles insists the girl must disappear before anyone learns the truth.

The journal entry was dated twenty years earlier.

Ryan frowned.

The girl?

Who?

He turned the page.

Another entry.

Eleanor refuses to ask questions anymore. She says ignorance is safer.

Ryan's pulse quickened.

His grandfather had known.

Known something terrible.

But what?

Several pages had been ripped out.

Cleanly.

Deliberately.

Someone had removed them years ago.

At the Sheriff's Office...

A young analyst hurried toward Brooks.

"Detective."

"What did you find?"

"Old newspaper archives."

She handed him a yellowed clipping from twenty years earlier.

The headline read:

LOCAL SOCIALITE VANISHES AFTER CHARITY GALA

Photograph:

A smiling blonde woman.

Age twenty-three.

Name:

Rebecca Hayes.

Brooks froze.

Hayes.

The same surname as Gabriel Hayes.

He quickly searched the article.

Rebecca had disappeared without explanation.

Her body was never found.

Her younger brother...

Gabriel Hayes.

Officer Hernandez looked over his shoulder.

"So Gabriel wasn't just a journalist."

Brooks nodded slowly.

"He was looking for his sister."

Everything suddenly shifted into place.

Gabriel hadn't been investigating financial fraud.

He had been investigating his own family's disappearance.

And somewhere along the way...

He had met Olivia.

Another analyst approached carrying hospital records.

"We found Rebecca Hayes."

Brooks looked up hopefully.

"Alive?"

She shook her head.

"No."

She handed him a photocopy.

An emergency room report.

Twenty years old.

Rebecca had been admitted with severe injuries.

Bruises.

Broken ribs.

Signs of repeated assault.

The discharge section was incomplete.

No follow-up.

No death certificate.

No transfer records.

She simply vanished.

Brooks whispered,

"Someone erased her."

That afternoon...

He visited Margaret Bennett again.

Olivia's mother answered immediately.

When Brooks showed her Rebecca's photograph...

Margaret burst into tears.

"I remember her."

"You knew Rebecca?"

Margaret nodded.

"She worked with Olivia at the legal aid clinic."

Brooks leaned forward.

"Did Olivia ever mention her?"

"Only once."

"What did she say?"

Margaret closed her eyes.

"She said Rebecca was terrified of a wealthy older man."

Brooks remained silent.

"She never told me his name."

Back at Caldwell Manor...

Charles Caldwell watched the evening news.

Another headline.

Another leak.

Another reporter asking questions.

His empire was crumbling.

Eleanor entered quietly.

"We need to leave."

Charles didn't answer.

"It's over."

Still silence.

She stepped closer.

"They're reopening Rebecca Hayes' case."

Charles slowly looked up.

His face was unreadable.

"I know."

Eleanor whispered,

"They'll connect everything."

For the first time in decades...

Charles looked afraid.

That night...

Ryan requested another meeting with Detective Brooks.

This time, he brought his grandfather's journal.

"I found something."

Brooks carefully examined the worn leather notebook.

Ryan pointed to the entry.

"The girl."

Brooks read it twice.

Then turned another page.

A folded receipt slipped onto the desk.

Old.

Faded.

Issued by a private medical clinic.

Patient:

Rebecca Hayes.

Attending physician:

Dr. Malcolm Pierce.

Brooks immediately recognized the name.

Dr. Pierce had died five years earlier.

Officially...

A heart attack.

Officer Hernandez rushed into the office.

"Detective."

"What?"

"We checked Dr. Pierce's records."

"And?"

"He signed medical reports for Olivia."

Brooks frowned.

"Anything else?"

The officer swallowed.

"He also signed the death certificate for Rebecca Hayes."

Silence filled the room.

The same doctor.

The same family.

Separated by twenty years.

Brooks obtained a warrant before midnight.

Dr. Pierce's abandoned medical practice had never been sold.

Inside the basement archives...

Dust covered everything.

Most patient files had already deteriorated.

But one locked cabinet remained untouched.

Inside were dozens of sealed envelopes.

Each marked with a red sticker.

CONFIDENTIAL

Brooks opened the first file.

Rebecca Hayes.

Second file.

Olivia Bennett.

Third file.

A woman named Caroline Moore.

Missing.

Seventeen years ago.

Fourth.

Emily Ross.

Missing.

Fourteen years ago.

Each file carried the same handwritten initials.

C.C.

Charles Caldwell.

Officer Hernandez counted the folders.

"Twelve women."

Brooks slowly corrected him.

"No."

He picked up another file hidden at the back.

Then another.

And another.

When they finished counting...

The total reached nineteen.

Nineteen missing women.

All connected to Charles Caldwell.

All examined by the same doctor.

All disappearing without explanation.

Then Brooks found one final envelope.

Unlike the others...

It had never been opened.

Across the front, Dr. Pierce had written one chilling sentence.

If I die unexpectedly, arrest Charles Caldwell immediately.

The detective stared at the envelope for several seconds before opening it.

Inside was a handwritten confession from Dr. Pierce.

His hand trembled as he read the first line aloud.

"For twenty years, I helped Charles Caldwell hide the deaths of women he claimed were accidents."

No one in the room spoke.

Brooks continued reading.

"I falsified medical reports."

"Destroyed evidence."

"Signed fraudulent death certificates."

His voice grew quieter.

"I told myself I was protecting my family."

The confession ended with one final paragraph.

"I know of nineteen deaths."

Brooks looked around the room.

"Nineteen."

Officer Hernandez whispered,

"And Emma would have been number twenty."

Brooks nodded grimly.

"If Vanessa had succeeded."

As he carefully folded the confession back into its envelope, another small piece of paper slipped onto the floor.

It contained only a handwritten address.

No explanation.

No name.

Just an abandoned farmhouse twenty miles outside Napa.

Below it, Dr. Pierce had added six words that sent a chill through everyone in the room.

They're all buried beneath the orchard.

The investigation had just transformed from attempted murder...

May you like

Into the search for a mass grave.
