Chapter 9

The Blood Test

Blood doesn't care about wealth.

It doesn't fear powerful names.

And it never learns how to lie.

The sealed envelope from Olivia Bennett changed the direction of the entire investigation.

The father is still inside the family.

Detective Daniel Brooks read the sentence over and over.

There was no signature.

No explanation.

Only six words that turned every member of the Caldwell family into a possible suspect.

Officer Hernandez broke the silence.

"If Gabriel wasn't the father..."

Brooks nodded.

"Then Olivia was protecting someone."

"Or exposing someone."

Brooks looked at the evidence board.

Charles Caldwell.

Eleanor Caldwell.

Ryan Caldwell.

Vanessa Caldwell.

Every photograph suddenly carried a new question.

Not who pushed Emma.

But who fathered Olivia's unborn child.

The recovered cassette tape finally arrived from the state forensic laboratory that afternoon.

The lead technician carefully handed Brooks a digital copy.

"We restored almost all of it."

"Any damage?"

"A few missing seconds."

Brooks inserted the drive into his computer.

The room filled with static.

Then Olivia's trembling voice emerged.

"If you're listening to this..."

"I'm probably already dead."

Every officer in the room stood silently.

Olivia continued.

"I trusted the wrong people."

"I thought love would protect me."

A pause.

Soft crying.

"Ryan tried to help me..."

Brooks looked up.

Ryan had told the truth.

At least about that part.

The recording continued.

"He begged me to leave."

"But I stayed because I couldn't abandon my baby."

Another pause.

Then—

"The baby's father..."

The tape crackled violently.

The audio disappeared.

Five agonizing seconds of silence.

Then Olivia's voice returned.

"...will never know."

The missing sentence had been erased.

Deliberately.

Officer Hernandez slammed his hand lightly on the desk.

"Someone edited it."

The technician nodded.

"The magnetic strip was physically damaged."

"Can you recover it?"

"We're trying."

"But whoever did this knew exactly which section to destroy."

Brooks stared at the waveform.

One sentence.

One missing name.

Someone had removed only the identity of the father.

Nothing else.

Meanwhile...

At my apartment, I tried to distract myself by organizing baby clothes Sarah had brought.

Tiny socks.

Small blankets.

A stuffed rabbit.

For a few precious minutes...

The investigation disappeared from my mind.

Then the doorbell rang.

Ryan stood outside.

He looked as though he hadn't slept for days.

Dark circles framed his eyes.

His expensive suit was wrinkled.

His hands trembled.

"I know I shouldn't be here."

I remained silent.

"I only need five minutes."

After a long pause...

I stepped aside.

Ryan looked around the apartment.

It was modest compared to Caldwell Manor.

But it felt warmer.

Safer.

"I'm glad you're here."

I folded my arms.

"Why did you come?"

He swallowed hard.

"I remembered something."

I stared at him.

"What?"

"The day Olivia died."

His voice became distant.

"I found her at the bottom of the stairs."

"I already know that."

"No."

He shook his head.

"You don't."

He sat down slowly.

"When I reached her..."

"She grabbed my hand."

My heartbeat quickened.

"What did she say?"

Ryan closed his eyes.

"I've tried to forget it for eight years."

"What did she say?"

A tear rolled down his cheek.

"She said..."

He struggled to breathe.

"'Protect the child.'"

I frowned.

"The child?"

Ryan nodded.

"I thought she meant the baby she was carrying."

"And now?"

He looked at me.

"I think she meant someone else."

Before I could ask another question, Detective Brooks called.

Ryan answered on speaker.

"We need you at the Sheriff's Office."

"Why?"

"We're requesting voluntary DNA samples."

Ryan froze.

Within an hour...

Every adult member of the Caldwell family sat in separate interview rooms.

Charles refused immediately.

"This is outrageous."

His attorney nodded.

"My client declines."

Brooks remained calm.

"You have that right."

He stood.

"We'll obtain a court order."

Charles' confidence slipped.

Vanessa laughed when asked.

"You think I fathered Olivia's baby?"

Officer Hernandez remained expressionless.

"We're collecting everyone's DNA."

She leaned back.

"I'm not giving you anything."

"Very well."

She smirked.

"I'll see you in court."

Ryan didn't hesitate.

He rolled up his sleeve.

"Take whatever you need."

The nurse collected his blood sample.

Brooks watched quietly.

"Trying to prove your innocence?"

Ryan shook his head.

"No."

"Then why?"

His answer surprised everyone.

"Because I want the truth."

Back at Caldwell Manor...

The court order arrived that evening.

Charles exploded.

"You can't force this!"

The deputy calmly handed him the signed warrant.

"The judge disagrees."

One by one...

Blood samples were collected.

Charles.

Eleanor.

Vanessa.

Ryan.

Even distant relatives whose names appeared in the family trust.

The process took hours.

No one knew exactly what Brooks was searching for.

Except Brooks himself.

Late that night...

The forensic laboratory called.

"The preliminary comparison is finished."

Brooks drove there immediately.

The chief geneticist spread several reports across the table.

"We compared Olivia's preserved prenatal medical records."

"And?"

"The fetal DNA profile is authentic."

Brooks nodded.

"What about the father?"

The scientist hesitated.

"That's where it becomes complicated."

He pointed to two reports.

"The biological father shares enough genetic markers with Ryan Caldwell..."

Brooks frowned.

"So Ryan is the father?"

The scientist slowly shook his head.

"No."

"What?"

"The probability is too low."

He pointed to another chart.

"But..."

"The father is a close blood relative."

The room became silent.

Brooks felt his stomach tighten.

"A brother?"

"No."

"Cousin?"

"No."

The scientist looked directly at him.

"The genetics are most consistent with..."

He stopped.

"As consistent with what?"

The scientist took a slow breath.

"Ryan's father."

Charles Caldwell.

Brooks stared at the report.

"You're certain?"

"We repeated the analysis three times."

Silence filled the laboratory.

Officer Hernandez whispered,

"My God..."

Brooks immediately understood why Olivia had hidden the truth.

Why the tape had been altered.

Why the diary stopped abruptly.

Why Eleanor hated her.

Why Charles had panicked over every piece of evidence.

Because if the report was correct...

Olivia hadn't been hiding an affair.

She had been hiding a crime.

The next morning...

Brooks sat across from Charles Caldwell.

He placed the sealed laboratory report on the table.

Charles glanced at it.

Then looked away.

"What's this?"

"A DNA analysis."

Charles smiled faintly.

"I don't understand genetics."

Brooks leaned forward.

"I think you do."

He slid the report closer.

Charles didn't touch it.

Brooks spoke quietly.

"The unborn child Olivia carried..."

A long pause.

"...was yours."

For the first time since the investigation began...

Charles Caldwell lost complete control.

His face turned white.

His breathing became uneven.

His hands visibly shook.

"That's impossible."

Brooks said nothing.

Charles suddenly stood.

"This is fabricated!"

Brooks remained seated.

"We verified it three times."

Charles slammed both hands onto the table.

"She's lying!"

Brooks looked up slowly.

"Olivia has been dead for eight years."

The room fell silent.

Charles realized his mistake too late.

Because he hadn't denied sleeping with Olivia.

He had accused a dead woman of lying.

Without being asked.

Outside the interrogation room...

Officer Hernandez looked through the one-way mirror.

"He just implicated himself."

Brooks nodded.

"Yes."

"But not enough."

"Why?"

Brooks stared at Charles.

"Because there's still one question nobody can answer."

"What question?"

Brooks looked down at Olivia's final letter.

If Charles fathered the child...

Then why had Olivia written:

Protect the child.

Not my child.

Just...

The child.

As Brooks studied the DNA report one last time, he noticed a handwritten note the laboratory had attached to the final page.

A note no one had seen before.

Additional genetic markers indicate the fetus may have had a living sibling.

Brooks' eyes widened.

A sibling?

There had never been any record of another child.

Unless...

May you like

Someone had erased that child too.
