Chapter 2

Chapter 2
The Mansion of Lies
The first lie lasted exactly twelve seconds.
That was how long it took after Detective Daniel Brooks declared Caldwell Manor an active crime scene for Charles Caldwell to recover his composure.
He straightened his expensive suit, stepped forward with the confidence of a man who had spent his entire life buying his way out of trouble, and smiled politely.
"There seems to be a misunderstanding, Detective."
Brooks didn't even look at him.
Two paramedics rushed past, kneeling beside me.
One carefully examined my head while the other checked my pulse.
"Six months pregnant?" the female paramedic asked.
I nodded weakly.
"I'm having... cramps."
She immediately looked at her partner.
"We're moving her now."
As they lifted me onto the stretcher, another wave of pain tore through my abdomen.
I bit my lip to stop myself from screaming.
Not because I wanted to appear strong.
Because I refused to give Vanessa the satisfaction of seeing me break.
While the paramedics wheeled me toward the front door, I looked back.
Ryan stood in the middle of the foyer.
Frozen.
His eyes followed the stretcher, but his feet never moved.
Not once did he say he was coming with me.
Instead, he stayed beside his family.
That single decision hurt more than the fall.
Outside, flashing police lights illuminated the massive estate.
Neighbors had already begun gathering beyond the gates.
News traveled quickly in Napa Valley.
Especially when one of the wealthiest families suddenly found their mansion surrounded by police.
As the ambulance doors closed, Detective Brooks leaned inside.
"Emma."
I looked at him.
"I'm assigning two officers to stay with you."
I frowned.
"You think they'll try something else?"
His jaw tightened.
"I think someone inside that house is more afraid of the truth than prison."
He closed the ambulance doors.
"We'll talk at the hospital."
The ambulance sped away.
Behind us, I watched Caldwell Manor disappear into the darkness.
For years, I had called that place home.
Tonight...
It looked like a prison.
St. Helena Medical Center
The emergency department exploded into motion the moment I arrived.
Doctors.
Nurses.
Ultrasound technicians.
Everyone moved quickly.
"Possible abdominal trauma."
"Pregnant, twenty-six weeks."
"Monitor fetal heartbeat."
The words blurred together.
I lay motionless as cold gel spread across my stomach.
The ultrasound technician remained silent.
Too silent.
I searched her face.
"Please..."
My voice cracked.
"My baby..."
She didn't answer immediately.
Instead, she adjusted the monitor.
Seconds felt like hours.
Thenâ
A rapid rhythm filled the room.
Thump.
Thump.
Thump.
Strong.
Steady.
Tears flooded my eyes.
The baby's heartbeat.
Alive.
The doctor smiled gently.
"Your baby is fighting."
I closed my eyes.
Thank God.
"But..."
His expression became serious.
"You've suffered significant trauma."
He pointed toward the monitor.
"The placenta shows signs of stress."
My heart tightened.
"What does that mean?"
"It means you and the baby are stable."
A pause.
"But only if you remain under observation."
"How long?"
"At least forty-eight hours."
I nodded.
I didn't care how long.
As long as my child survived.
An hour later...
Detective Brooks entered my hospital room.
He carried a thin folder.
Already.
He sat beside my bed.
"How are you feeling?"
"Like I fell down a staircase."
A faint smile crossed his face.
"Fair enough."
Then his expression hardened.
"I need to ask you something."
I nodded.
"Was tonight the first time Vanessa Caldwell became violent?"
I looked out the window.
"No."
Three years of memories flooded back.
The coffee she intentionally spilled on me during Christmas dinner.
The locked bedroom.
The threats whispered when nobody else was listening.
The "accidental" shove beside the swimming pool.
The broken picture frame she blamed on me.
Every incident had one thing in common.
No witnesses.
Or witnesses too afraid to speak.
"I documented everything."
I whispered.
Brooks looked up.
"What?"
I reached toward the bedside table.
"My cloud account."
I handed him my phone.
"The password is our case number."
He unlocked it.
His eyes widened.
Folders.
Photos.
Voice recordings.
Medical reports.
Diary entries.
Dates.
Times.
Witnesses.
Nearly three years of evidence.
"You've been collecting this..."
"For a long time."
"Why didn't you report it sooner?"
I smiled sadly.
"Because I kept believing my husband would eventually choose me."
Silence filled the room.
"He never did."
Back at Caldwell Manor...
Detective Brooks' team began interviewing family members one by one.
Officer Hernandez questioned Charles Caldwell first.
"What happened tonight?"
Charles answered confidently.
"It was an unfortunate accident."
"What kind of accident?"
"My daughter slipped."
"Which daughter?"
A pause.
Charles corrected himself.
"My daughter-in-law."
Officer Hernandez made a note.
"You said she slipped."
Charles nodded.
"Yes."
"But the victim says she was pushed."
Charles smiled politely.
"She's emotional."
Meanwhile...
Vanessa sat across from Detective Brooks himself.
She dabbed fake tears with a silk handkerchief.
"I've always treated Emma like a sister."
Brooks didn't respond.
"She became unstable after getting pregnant."
Still nothing.
Vanessa continued.
"She screamed that I wanted her baby."
Brooks slowly opened his notebook.
"Did you?"
Her expression froze.
"What?"
"Want her baby gone."
She laughed.
"What kind of question is that?"
"The kind that deserves an answer."
Across the hallway...
Ryan stared at the interview room wall.
Officer Mitchell placed a recorder on the table.
"When did you first see your wife?"
"After she fell."
"Where were you before that?"
"Dining room."
"With who?"
"My family."
"Did you witness the push?"
"No."
"Did you hear the argument?"
Ryan hesitated.
"Yes."
"What were they arguing about?"
Silence.
Officer Mitchell repeated the question.
Ryan finally answered.
"The nursery."
Two hours passed.
The interviews continued.
One by one.
Every statement contained different details.
Charles claimed Emma slipped.
Vanessa claimed Emma attacked her.
Eleanor claimed she never saw the fall.
Ryan admitted hearing the argument but claimed he saw nothing.
Three cousins insisted they were in the kitchen.
Two aunts said they had already left the room.
Even the timeline changed depending on who answered.
Detective Brooks quietly gathered every report.
Then placed them side by side.
Twelve interviews.
Twelve different versions.
Only one fact remained consistent.
Nobody admitted seeing Vanessa push Emma.
Not even the maid.
Lily sat trembling inside the final interview room.
She couldn't stop shaking.
Brooks placed a bottle of water in front of her.
"Take your time."
She whispered,
"I don't want to lose my job."
"You won't."
"They'll destroy my family."
Brooks leaned forward.
"Who?"
Her lips parted.
"The Caldwells..."
Before she could continueâ
The lights flickered.
Then the room went dark.
Power outage.
Officers immediately reached for flashlights.
Emergency generators activated seconds later.
When the lights returned...
Lily burst into tears.
"I can't."
She stood abruptly.
"I didn't see anything."
She rushed out before Brooks could stop her.
The detective watched quietly.
Then looked toward the hallway.
Vanessa stood there.
Smiling.
Only for a second.
But he noticed.
Three hours later...
Crime scene investigators finished examining the staircase.
Blood samples.
Broken porcelain.
Footprints.
Fingerprints.
Everything was photographed.
Officer Jenkins approached Brooks.
"Sir."
"What did you find?"
"The security system."
Brooks looked up.
"What about it?"
"It was turned off."
"When?"
"Approximately forty minutes before the incident."
Brooks frowned.
"Accident?"
Jenkins shook his head.
"Manual shutdown."
"By who?"
"We're checking."
Another investigator approached carrying a laptop.
"Sir..."
"The surveillance hard drives have been wiped."
Brooks' eyes narrowed.
"When?"
"Tonight."
"Completely?"
"It looks that way."
Charles Caldwell overheard the conversation.
He smiled confidently.
"Technical malfunction."
Brooks looked at him.
"A very convenient one."
Near midnight...
A young forensic technician hurried into the foyer.
His breathing was uneven.
"Detective!"
Brooks turned.
"What is it?"
"I found something."
He held up a floor plan of the mansion.
"The main security system was erased."
Brooks waited.
"But..."
The technician pointed toward a small hallway.
"There was one camera nobody remembered."
Silence spread across the room.
"What camera?"
"A backup surveillance camera installed by the construction company during the mansion renovation."
Charles' face turned pale.
"It wasn't connected to the main system."
The technician nodded.
"Exactly."
"So it wasn't erased."
He looked directly at Brooks.
"It may have recorded everything."
Across the room...
Vanessa's champagne-colored face lost every trace of confidence.
For the first time that night...
She looked genuinely terrified.
Because if that forgotten camera had survived...
May you like
Then so had the truth.
