Chapter 7

The Secret in the Nursery

Some rooms are built for new beginnings.

Others are built to bury the past.

The nursery at Caldwell Manor had never welcomed a child.

For eight years, its white walls had remained untouched.

The elegant wooden crib had never held a sleeping baby.

The rocking chair beside the window had never been used.

Yet someone insisted on cleaning the room every week.

Dust was never allowed to settle.

Flowers were replaced every Monday.

Fresh curtains appeared every spring.

It was as though the family had been preserving a memory no one was allowed to mention.

Detective Daniel Brooks found that strange.

Very strange.

Two days after discovering Olivia Bennett's hidden letter, Brooks obtained a second search warrant for Caldwell Manor.

This time, he wasn't interested in the staircase.

He wanted the nursery.

Charles Caldwell protested immediately.

"That room has nothing to do with your investigation."

Brooks calmly handed him the warrant.

"The court disagrees."

Vanessa folded her arms.

"You've already searched the house."

Brooks looked at her.

"I searched for evidence."

He paused.

"Today I'm searching for the truth."

The nursery door creaked open.

Sunlight spilled across pale blue walls decorated with hand-painted clouds.

Everything inside looked untouched.

Too perfect.

Officer Hernandez slowly walked around the room.

"No dust."

He frowned.

"But nobody's lived here."

Brooks nodded.

"Exactly."

His eyes moved across every shelf, every drawer, every picture frame.

Nothing seemed unusual.

Until he noticed the rocking chair.

One leg rested slightly higher than the others.

As if something beneath it had warped the wooden floor.

He knelt.

Ran his fingers across the polished oak.

A faint scratch.

Almost invisible.

"Hernandez."

The officer hurried over.

"Lift the chair."

Together they moved it aside.

Underneath...

A loose floorboard.

Back at my apartment, I was trying to follow the doctor's orders.

Rest.

No stress.

No unnecessary movement.

Impossible.

Sarah placed another cup of tea beside me.

"You've checked your phone twelve times in five minutes."

"I know."

"You need to breathe."

"I can't."

Because every hour Detective Brooks uncovered another lie.

Another secret.

Another reason my marriage had never been real.

The doorbell rang.

A police officer handed me an evidence receipt.

"Detective Brooks asked us to bring this."

Inside the envelope was a small brass key.

Attached was a note.

Found inside the nursery.

My heart raced.

Meanwhile...

At Caldwell Manor...

Officer Hernandez carefully pried the floorboard loose.

Everyone expected jewelry.

Cash.

Maybe old documents.

Instead...

A leather journal.

Wrapped carefully in waterproof cloth.

Brooks immediately recognized the elegant handwriting on the cover.

Olivia Bennett

Vanessa's face lost all color.

Charles whispered,

"...No."

Brooks slowly opened the diary.

The first pages were ordinary.

Wedding plans.

Pregnancy symptoms.

Dreams about motherhood.

Then...

The tone changed.

March 8

Ryan has become quieter.

Something is wrong with his family.

Every dinner ends in another argument.

His mother watches me as if I'm already an enemy.

March 22

Vanessa entered the nursery without knocking.

She looked around the room and smiled.

"Don't get attached," she told me.

I laughed.

Now I wish I hadn't.

Brooks turned another page.

The handwriting became hurried.

Shakier.

April 3

I found documents in Richard's office.

Millions of dollars missing.

Fake trusts.

Property transfers.

Someone is stealing from their own family.

I copied everything.

Officer Hernandez looked up.

"Financial fraud."

Brooks nodded.

"But keep reading."

The next pages were filled with fear.

April 10

Someone searched my bedroom.

They know I found the files.

April 14

Ryan told me to stop asking questions.

He looked terrified.

Not angry.

Terrified.

April 18

If anything happens to me...

It wasn't because of money.

It's because of the child.

Brooks stopped reading.

The room became silent.

Vanessa suddenly laughed.

"That's ridiculous."

Nobody looked at her.

Another page.

April 21

I finally understand.

The inheritance isn't the real reason.

The baby is.

Someone inside this house knows who the father really is.

Brooks' eyes narrowed.

Gabriel.

Again.

The same missing name.

The final pages were stained.

As if tears had fallen onto the paper years ago.

April 26

Ryan begged me to leave.

He said he couldn't protect me anymore.

I wanted to believe he was overreacting.

I was wrong.

April 27

If this diary is ever found...

Please tell my child...

The sentence stopped abruptly.

The ink smeared.

No more words.

Only a faint fingerprint in dried blood.

At my apartment...

Detective Brooks called.

"We found Olivia's diary."

I closed my eyes.

"What does it say?"

"A lot."

He hesitated.

"But there's something else."

"What?"

"It wasn't the only thing hidden beneath the floor."

Back at Caldwell Manor...

Officer Hernandez reached deeper into the compartment.

His fingers touched another object.

A thick brown envelope.

Sealed.

Across the front, written in black ink, were four words.

Only If I Die

Brooks carefully broke the seal.

Inside were dozens of photocopied documents.

Bank records.

Property deeds.

Trust agreements.

Letters.

Every page carried one signature.

Eleanor Caldwell

Officer Hernandez whispered,

"My God..."

Then Brooks unfolded the final sheet.

It wasn't a financial document.

It was a DNA report.

Dated eight years earlier.

He read the names twice to make sure he wasn't mistaken.

Mother: Olivia Bennett

Child: Male Fetus

Alleged Father: Gabriel Hayes

Probability of paternity:

99.99%

The room fell completely silent.

Ryan, who had arrived only moments earlier with his attorney, stared at the report in disbelief.

"You knew?"

Brooks asked quietly.

Ryan slowly shook his head.

"I knew..."

His voice cracked.

"...the baby wasn't mine."

"But I never knew who the father was."

He looked down at the report.

"Until now."

Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.

"That changes nothing."

Brooks looked at her.

"Doesn't it?"

"It proves Olivia lied."

"No."

Brooks carefully placed the DNA report into an evidence bag.

"It proves someone believed this unborn child was dangerous enough to kill over."

Just then, Officer Hernandez rushed back into the room.

"Detective."

"What is it?"

"We found something hidden inside the back cover of the diary."

Brooks examined the book again.

A thin compartment had been carved into the leather.

Inside...

A tiny cassette tape.

Old.

Dusty.

Still intact.

Attached to it was another handwritten label.

If they find me before I can escape... play this.

Brooks looked toward Vanessa.

For the first time since the investigation began...

She wasn't pretending anymore.

Her hands were shaking.

Because diaries could be dismissed.

Letters could be challenged.

Documents could be explained away.

But a voice...

A recorded confession from a woman who knew she was about to die...

Was something far more dangerous.

May you like

And everyone in the room knew exactly whose voice waited inside that tape.
