CHAPTER 12

CHAPTER 12

Ethan's Truth

Richard Hale's body lay motionless on the scorched wooden floor of the old Ashford Manor.

Smoke no longer filled the halls as it had twenty-five years earlier, but the ruins were once again consumed by chaos.

Police officers flooded the estate.

Flashlights swept across the broken walls.

Paramedics rushed toward Grace Holloway while crime scene investigators secured every entrance.

Detective Michael Reeves never took his eyes off the shattered second-floor balcony.

Whoever had fired the fatal shot knew the manor well.

They had chosen the perfect escape route.

By the time officers reached the upper floor, the shooter had vanished into the surrounding forest.

Richard Hale had finally confessed.

But before he could reveal the name of his accomplice...

Someone had silenced him forever.

The Notebook

Victoria knelt beside Richard's body.

Not out of love.

Not out of forgiveness.

But because the man who had stolen twenty-five years of her daughter's life had died carrying answers she still desperately needed.

Detective Reeves picked up the leather notebook Richard had thrown across the floor moments before he was shot.

The cover was worn with age.

Inside were pages of carefully handwritten names.

Dates.

Amounts of money.

Bank account numbers.

Code words.

It looked less like a diary and more like the ledger of a conspiracy.

Reeves flipped through the first few pages.

"Payments to investigators..."

He turned another page.

"Police officers..."

Another.

"Insurance adjusters..."

Victoria felt sick.

"So many people..."

Reeves nodded grimly.

"Richard didn't hide the truth alone."

"He bought silence."

One Name Stood Out

Near the center of the notebook, one page had been marked with a red ribbon.

Across the top, Richard had written:

Project Phoenix

Below it appeared only three names.

Grace Holloway

Helen Brooks

And...

Daniel Mercer

Victoria frowned.

"I don't know that name."

Neither did Ethan.

Nor Lily.

But Detective Reeves froze.

"I do."

Everyone looked at him.

"Who is he?"

Reeves took a slow breath.

"Daniel Mercer was a physician."

"He worked at St. Catherine's Hospital."

"The same hospital where Ethan's adoption paperwork originated."

Ethan felt his stomach tighten.

"My hospital?"

Reeves nodded.

"And according to these records..."

He turned another page.

"...Richard paid him nearly half a million dollars."

The Hospital Archive

The following morning, Reeves obtained a court order granting access to the sealed archives of St. Catherine's Hospital.

The building had changed dramatically over twenty-five years.

Old paper records had long since been transferred into digital storage.

Most had survived.

Some had not.

A hospital archivist led the group into a secure records room beneath the main building.

"We've already searched once."

She looked apologetic.

"Many files from that period are incomplete."

Reeves handed her Daniel Mercer's name.

"I need everything."

She disappeared among endless shelves of dusty boxes.

An hour later she returned carrying a thin file.

"That's all that's left."

A Missing Mother

The file contained only six pages.

The first documented a baby boy born three days before the Ashford Manor fire.

No father's name.

No mother's signature.

Instead, the space where the mother's information should have appeared had been blacked out with thick ink.

Reeves frowned.

"Someone deliberately concealed this."

The archivist looked uncomfortable.

"That's highly unusual."

Victoria studied the report.

"What about the doctor?"

"The attending physician was Daniel Mercer."

Ethan stared at the page.

"Is this me?"

Reeves nodded.

"I believe so."

Then Lily noticed something strange.

"There are two footprints."

Everyone leaned closer.

Normally, newborn records contained a single set of inked footprints.

This page showed two.

One had been crossed out.

The second had been stamped over it.

The archivist whispered,

"I've never seen that before."

Daniel Mercer

Reeves requested Daniel Mercer's personnel file.

The archivist returned empty-handed.

"It doesn't exist."

"What do you mean?"

"He resigned."

"When?"

She checked the computer.

"Four days after the Ashford fire."

Victoria exchanged a glance with Reeves.

The timing was impossible to ignore.

"Do we know where he went?"

The archivist hesitated.

"He disappeared."

"No forwarding address."

"No pension claims."

"No medical license renewal."

"It was as if he simply vanished."

Grace Remembers

Back at Ashford Estate, Grace slowly recovered from her injuries.

She remained weak, but her memory had begun returning in fragments.

Victoria sat beside her bed.

"I need to ask you something."

Grace nodded faintly.

"Do you remember a doctor named Daniel Mercer?"

Grace's eyes widened.

The reaction was immediate.

"You found his name?"

Victoria leaned forward.

"You know him?"

Grace closed her eyes.

"He delivered a baby."

"What baby?"

"The little boy."

"Ethan?"

Grace nodded slowly.

"He wasn't supposed to disappear."

The Night Everything Changed

Grace spoke quietly, forcing herself through memories she had buried for decades.

"The night Richard kidnapped Charlotte..."

"I escaped."

"I ran through the woods."

"I ended up near St. Catherine's Hospital."

She paused to catch her breath.

"There was chaos."

"An emergency."

"I saw Richard arguing with a doctor."

"Daniel."

Victoria listened carefully.

"What were they arguing about?"

Grace swallowed.

"I heard Daniel say..."

'This isn't the baby you paid for.'

The room became silent.

Ethan frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Grace shook her head.

"I don't know."

"I only heard those words."

"Then Richard handed him a suitcase."

"A lot of money."

Ethan Begins to Break

Later that evening, Ethan stood alone in the estate gardens.

His entire life had become a maze of unanswered questions.

He wasn't an Ashford.

He wasn't connected to the fire.

His adoption had been arranged illegally.

Now he had learned that someone had paid a doctor before he was placed into Victoria's family.

Lily quietly joined him.

"You've been out here for hours."

He nodded.

"I keep wondering..."

"What if my real parents wanted me?"

She took his hand.

"They might have."

"What if they searched for me?"

His voice cracked.

"What if they never stopped?"

Lily had no answer.

Because she had asked herself the same questions after discovering Victoria was her biological mother.

She rested her head against his shoulder.

"We'll find them."

He smiled sadly.

"I hope they're still alive."

The Envelope

That night, Detective Reeves returned to Richard Hale's notebook.

He carefully examined the inside cover.

Something felt unusual.

The leather was thicker than it should have been.

Using a small knife, he gently separated the inner lining.

A hidden envelope slipped free.

Inside was a single birth certificate.

Not Ethan's.

Not Charlotte's.

The name at the top froze him in place.

Noah Mercer

Date of birth:

Three days before the Ashford Manor fire.

Mother:

Emily Mercer

Father:

Daniel Mercer

Reeves frowned.

This child had been born the same day Ethan was supposedly born.

Yet another mystery.

Then he noticed a handwritten note clipped to the certificate.

Richard's unmistakable handwriting.

The wrong baby was delivered.

Reeves felt the blood drain from his face.

The wrong baby.

He immediately called Victoria.

"You need to come to the library."

Within minutes, Victoria, Lily, Ethan, and Grace gathered around the table.

Reeves placed the birth certificate before them.

No one spoke.

Finally Ethan whispered,

"What does this mean?"

Reeves answered honestly.

"I don't know."

"But I believe we've been asking the wrong question."

Victoria looked at him.

"What question?"

Reeves met Ethan's eyes.

"Not..."

"'Who are Ethan's parents?'"

He slid Richard's note across the table.

"But..."

"'Who was Richard expecting to receive?'"

Silence filled the room.

If Richard himself had written that the wrong baby had been delivered...

Then Ethan hadn't merely been hidden.

He had been mistaken for someone else.

And somewhere...

Perhaps still alive...

May you like

There was another child whose identity had been switched on the very night two families were torn apart.
