CHAPTER 2

CHAPTER 2
The Pendant That Shouldn't Exist
Silence swallowed the Crystal Ballroom.
No one spoke.
No one even dared to move.
The joyful atmosphere that had filled the room only minutes earlier had vanished, replaced by a suffocating tension that seemed to press against every guest's chest.
Lily stood at the center of the aisle, Ethan's tuxedo jacket wrapped around her torn wedding dress. Her fingers instinctively tightened around the jade pendant resting in her palm, unaware that the tiny piece of stone had just shattered decades of carefully buried lies.
Across from her, Victoria Ashford stared at the pendant as though she were seeing a ghost.
Her breathing had become shallow.
Her heartbeat pounded painfully in her ears.
It couldn't be.
She had watched firefighters search the ruins of Ashford Manor twenty-five years ago.
She had stood beside police officers as they combed through the ashes.
She had spent months hoping someone would find her daughter alive.
Instead, all she received were condolences.
No body.
No answers.
No pendant.
Eventually, everyone had convinced her that the fire had consumed every trace of the child she loved.
Everyone except her heart.
Some nights she still dreamed of a little girl laughing in the gardens of the old estate.
A little girl with bright eyes and tiny hands reaching toward her.
A little girl wearing...
That pendant.
Victoria's legs suddenly weakened.
A nearby guest quickly pulled out a chair.
"Mrs. Ashford..."
She ignored him.
Her eyes never left Lily.
The ballroom seemed to disappear.
Only the pendant remained.
Only the past.
Only the impossible.
Twenty-Five Years Earlier...
The Ashford Estate had been alive with laughter.
Three-year-old Charlotte Ashford ran barefoot across the rose garden, her golden curls bouncing as she chased butterflies beneath the afternoon sun.
Victoria laughed as she followed behind.
"Charlotte!"
"Slow down!"
The little girl giggled.
"You can't catch me, Mommy!"
Richard Hale, Victoria's closest family friend, smiled from the terrace.
"She has your spirit."
Victoria smiled proudly.
"And her father's stubbornness."
Charlotte climbed onto a marble bench.
"Daddy!"
A tall man stepped from the house carrying a small velvet box.
Her father, Edward Ashford.
He knelt before his daughter.
"I have something special for you."
Charlotte's eyes sparkled.
"For me?"
Edward opened the box.
Inside rested a jade pendant carved into the shape of a blooming lotus.
Simple.
Elegant.
Timeless.
Victoria gently fastened it around Charlotte's tiny neck.
"This belongs to the Ashford women," she whispered.
"It belonged to your grandmother."
"And one day..."
"It will belong to your daughter."
Charlotte touched it carefully.
"It's pretty."
Victoria kissed her forehead.
"Promise me something."
"What?"
"If you ever get lost..."
Victoria smiled through unexpected tears.
"Never let anyone take this away from you."
Charlotte nodded seriously.
"I promise."
The memory shattered.
Victoria blinked.
She was back in the ballroom.
Lily still held the pendant.
Exactly the same carving.
Exactly the same faded silk cord.
Even the tiny crack along one edgeâ
The one Charlotte had accidentally made after dropping it onto the garden stonesâ
Was still there.
Victoria's hands shook violently.
"No..."
She whispered again.
"That's impossible..."
Ethan stepped closer.
"Mother."
"What are you talking about?"
She looked at him without truly seeing him.
"Where..."
Her voice barely escaped.
"Where did you get that pendant?"
Lily looked confused.
"This?"
She lifted it gently.
"I've always had it."
"No."
Victoria's voice became sharper.
"I asked where you got it."
Lily frowned.
"My mother gave it to me."
Victoria's heartbeat skipped.
"Your mother?"
"Yes."
"Your real mother?"
Lily hesitated.
"I..."
She lowered her eyes.
"I don't know."
Murmurs spread across the ballroom.
Guests exchanged puzzled looks.
Even Ethan seemed surprised.
"What do you mean?"
Lily swallowed.
"I was adopted."
Another wave of whispers rolled through the crowd.
Ethan stared at her.
"You never told me."
"I found out when I was sixteen."
Lily's voice trembled.
"My parents wanted to tell me earlier."
"But they were afraid."
Victoria suddenly stood.
"Who adopted you?"
"What's their name?"
"Lily."
Ethan gently squeezed her hand.
"You don't have to answer."
But Lily looked into Victoria's frightened eyes.
For the first time...
She didn't see arrogance.
She saw terror.
"My mother's name is Sarah Carter."
Victoria searched her memory.
Nothing.
The name meant nothing to her.
"Where does she live?"
"Outside Brookhaven."
"Has she always lived there?"
"I think so."
"You think?"
Lily nodded.
"We never really talked about my adoption."
"My parents always said..."
She smiled sadly.
"They chose me."
Victoria closed her eyes.
Chosen.
That single word pierced her heart.
Charlotte had been stolen.
Not abandoned.
Not given away.
Stolen.
Detective Michael Reeves stood quietly among the guests.
Although officially retired, he had been invited because of his long friendship with the Ashford family.
He had investigated Charlotte's disappearance decades earlier.
He stepped forward slowly.
"Victoria..."
She turned.
He looked at the pendant.
Then at Lily.
His expression darkened.
"I'd like to see it."
Lily hesitated before placing the pendant into his hand.
The old detective examined it carefully.
Every carved detail.
Every mark.
Then he froze.
"I remember this."
Victoria looked at him hopefully.
"You do?"
"I photographed it."
The ballroom erupted into louder whispers.
"I still have the investigation files."
Victoria grabbed his arm.
"You mean..."
He nodded slowly.
"If this is the same pendant..."
He looked toward Lily.
"...then someone owes us twenty-five years of answers."
Lily felt the room spinning.
Nothing made sense anymore.
She had walked into the ballroom expecting to become Ethan's wife.
Instead...
Complete strangers were looking at her as if she belonged to another life.
Another family.
Another past.
She glanced down at the pendant.
She had worn it every day since childhood.
As a little girl, she often asked Sarah about it.
"Where did this come from?"
Sarah always smiled.
"It was with you when you came to us."
Nothing more.
Whenever Lily asked another question...
Sarah changed the subject.
At the time, she never thought much about it.
Now...
Every forgotten conversation suddenly felt important.
Painfully important.
Victoria took one cautious step toward Lily.
"May I..."
Her voice softened.
"...may I hold it?"
Lily looked uncertain.
After a long pause...
She placed the pendant into Victoria's trembling hands.
The older woman closed her fingers around the cool jade.
Instantly, tears blurred her vision.
There was no mistake.
Hidden inside the lotus carving was a tiny engraved letter.
"C."
For Charlotte.
A mark only her family knew existed.
Victoria's breath caught.
Her lips trembled.
Edward himself had carved that tiny initial after Charlotte was born.
No jeweler.
No duplicate.
No copy could ever reproduce it exactly.
She turned the pendant over.
The engraving remained.
Untouched by time.
Untouched by lies.
Her daughter had worn this.
She knew it with absolute certainty.
Yet one terrifying question remained.
If the pendant survived...
Had Charlotte survived too?
Across the ballroom, an elderly woman sitting near the back slowly stood.
She had remained silent throughout the confrontation.
No one had paid attention to her.
Until now.
Her eyes were fixed on Lily.
Her face had become pale.
She whispered only one sentence.
"Oh no..."
Emma noticed her first.
"Are you alright?"
The woman quickly grabbed her purse.
"I have to go."
She hurried toward the exit.
Almost running.
Detective Reeves frowned.
"Wait."
She ignored him.
He called louder.
"Ma'am!"
The woman disappeared through the ballroom doors.
Victoria stared after her.
Something about the woman's face stirred a distant memory she couldn't quite grasp.
Detective Reeves looked toward one of the hotel security guards.
"Don't let her leave."
The guard rushed after her.
But by the time he reached the parking lot...
She was gone.
Only the sound of tires screeching into the distance remained.
Inside the ballroom, everyone felt the same unsettling realization.
Someone else knew the truth.
Someone had recognized the pendant.
Someone was afraid.
Very afraid.
Lily looked at Ethan.
"What is happening?"
He honestly didn't know.
For the first time in his life...
The Ashford family's carefully polished image was cracking apart before his eyes.
His mother stood silently clutching the pendant.
The retired detective wore the expression of a man who had just reopened the most painful case of his career.
And somewhere outside...
A frightened stranger had fled the hotel the moment she saw the jade pendant.
Ethan wrapped his arm around Lily.
"I don't know what's happening..."
He looked toward the ballroom doors.
"...but I have a feeling our wedding is only the beginning."
Far down the highway, the elderly woman gripped the steering wheel with shaking hands.
Tears streamed down her face.
She reached for an old flip phone hidden inside her handbag.
After dialing a number she hadn't called in years, she whispered urgently when the line connected:
"They found the girl."
A long silence answered.
Then a man's cold voice spoke only six words.
"I told you this day would come."
The call ended.
The woman burst into tears.
Back at the hotel, Detective Reeves stared at the empty doorway.
His instinctsâhoned over forty years of solving crimesâwere screaming at him.
The pendant hadn't just resurfaced.
It had awakened someone who had spent twenty-five years hiding.
And whoever that person was...
May you like
They would do anything to keep the truth buried.
