CHAPTER 4

CHAPTER 4

DNA Never Lies

The drive back to the city was silent.

Rain tapped softly against the windshield as Victoria Ashford stared out the window, replaying every second of her meeting with Sarah Carter.

She had expected anger.

Denial.

Perhaps even hatred.

Instead, she had seen something entirely different.

Fear.

Not the fear of being caught.

The fear of losing time.

As though Sarah knew the truth was finally catching up—and she was desperately trying to protect someone from it.

Detective Michael Reeves kept both hands on the steering wheel.

Neither of them spoke for nearly an hour.

Finally, Victoria broke the silence.

"Do you think she kidnapped my daughter?"

Reeves didn't answer immediately.

"I've spent forty-three years investigating crimes."

"I've learned one thing."

"Guilty people usually defend themselves."

"They lie."

"They blame someone else."

"They destroy evidence."

Victoria looked at him.

"And Sarah?"

Reeves sighed.

"She looked like a woman carrying a promise."

"A painful one."

Victoria frowned.

"A promise?"

"Yes."

"Not a crime."

His words lingered in the car long after he spoke them.

At the Ashford Estate, the atmosphere was just as heavy.

The mansion, usually alive with staff and activity, felt unusually quiet.

News of the interrupted wedding had already spread across television, social media, and every major news website.

ASHFORD WEDDING ENDS IN SCANDAL

BILLIONAIRE MATRIARCH DESTROYS BRIDE'S DRESS

MYSTERIOUS JADE PENDANT STUNS ELITE FAMILY

Reporters camped outside the estate's gates.

Helicopters occasionally circled overhead.

The Ashford family had become the biggest story in the country.

None of that mattered to Ethan.

He sat alone in the library, staring at the wedding ring still resting in its velvet box.

Hours earlier, he had imagined slipping it onto Lily's finger.

Now he wasn't even sure who Lily really was.

His phone buzzed.

Lily.

He answered immediately.

"How are you?"

There was a long pause.

"I don't know."

Her voice sounded exhausted.

"I feel like my whole life has become someone else's story."

"You'll get through this."

"We'll get through it."

Another silence.

Then Lily asked the question neither of them wanted to face.

"What if the DNA says I'm Victoria's daughter?"

Ethan closed his eyes.

"I don't know."

"What happens to us?"

His heart tightened.

He had thought about that question all afternoon.

If Lily truly was Charlotte Ashford...

Would anything change?

Legally, no.

They shared no blood.

He had been adopted years after Charlotte disappeared.

But emotions were never that simple.

Victoria would suddenly have the daughter she had mourned for twenty-five years.

Everything in the family would change.

Everything.

"Ethan?"

"I'm here."

"Promise me something."

"Anything."

"If the truth changes your family..."

Her voice cracked.

"...don't let it change us."

Without hesitation, he answered.

"It won't."

"I promise."

Across town, Sarah Carter drove aimlessly through empty country roads.

She had no destination.

Only memories.

The envelope lay on the passenger seat beside her.

She had nearly taken it with her.

Instead, in her panic, she had left the cedar chest open in the attic.

Now she realized what that meant.

If Victoria entered the house...

She would find it.

Perhaps that was inevitable.

Perhaps it was time.

Sarah pulled onto the shoulder of a quiet road overlooking a lake.

She turned off the engine.

Silence surrounded her.

With trembling hands, she opened the envelope.

Inside were three items.

A faded photograph.

A silver key.

And a handwritten letter.

She stared at the photograph first.

It showed a young woman holding a toddler.

The woman's face had been deliberately scratched away.

Only the little girl's smile remained visible.

Around her neck...

The jade pendant.

Sarah whispered softly,

"I wish I knew your name."

For twenty-two years she had raised Lily as her own.

She had bandaged scraped knees.

Helped with homework.

Stayed awake through fevers.

Celebrated birthdays.

Cried at graduations.

Loved her with every part of her heart.

Yet she had never known who had placed that little girl on her doorstep.

Only one person could answer those questions.

The person who wrote the letter.

She unfolded it once more.

The handwriting was shaky.

Almost desperate.

If you are reading this, it means I have failed to protect her myself.

Please don't look for me.

Powerful people will do anything to silence the truth.

Raise her with love.

When she becomes an adult, give her the pendant and tell her never to throw it away.

One day someone will recognize it.

When that day comes...

Everything hidden will finally be revealed.

The letter ended without a signature.

Sarah wiped away tears.

Whoever wrote those words had known exactly what would happen.

They had planned for this day.

Meanwhile, inside a state-of-the-art forensic laboratory, technicians worked through the night.

The Ashford case had been marked URGENT.

DNA extraction.

Amplification.

Sequencing.

Every step was repeated twice.

No mistakes could be allowed.

The lead geneticist personally supervised the process.

By sunrise...

The preliminary report appeared on his computer screen.

He stared at it.

Then checked it again.

Finally, he removed his glasses.

"This can't be..."

A younger technician looked over.

"What is it?"

The geneticist slowly turned the monitor.

"The probability..."

He swallowed.

"...is over 99.999 percent."

The next morning...

Victoria hadn't slept.

Neither had Ethan.

Nor Lily.

At exactly nine o'clock, Detective Reeves arrived at the Ashford Estate carrying a sealed envelope.

His face revealed nothing.

Victoria stood as soon as he entered.

"The results?"

Reeves nodded.

"They're here."

The room became silent.

Even the ticking grandfather clock seemed unusually loud.

Lily's hands trembled.

Ethan quietly reached for them.

Victoria couldn't bring herself to open the envelope.

For twenty-five years she had prayed for this moment.

Now she feared it.

Reeves gently took the envelope.

"Would you like me to read it?"

Victoria nodded.

He broke the seal.

His eyes scanned the report.

Then...

He stopped.

For several long seconds, he said nothing.

Victoria's voice shook.

"Michael..."

"What does it say?"

He slowly lowered the paper.

His eyes met hers.

"There is no doubt."

He took a slow breath.

"The DNA confirms that Lily Carter is your biological daughter."

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Victoria stared at him as if she had forgotten how to breathe.

Lily closed her eyes.

Ethan tightened his grip on her hand.

Then Victoria whispered one broken word.

"Charlotte..."

Her legs gave way.

Ethan rushed forward just in time to catch her before she collapsed onto the floor.

For years, Victoria had imagined this moment.

She believed she would feel joy.

Instead...

She felt unbearable grief.

Because the daughter she had finally found had spent twenty-five years growing up without her.

Twenty-five birthdays.

Twenty-five Christmas mornings.

Twenty-five first days of school.

Twenty-five years of scraped knees, broken hearts, achievements, fears, and dreams.

She had missed every single one.

No amount of wealth.

No amount of power.

No amount of regret...

Could ever give those years back.

Tears streamed down her face.

She turned toward Lily.

"I'm so sorry."

Her voice broke.

"I'm so... so sorry."

Lily stood frozen.

She wanted to be angry.

She wanted to ask why.

She wanted to understand.

Instead, she found herself crying too.

Not because she suddenly felt like Victoria's daughter.

But because she saw a mother whose grief had never truly ended.

Victoria slowly stepped closer.

Her hands trembled.

"May I..."

She hesitated.

"...hug you?"

Lily didn't answer immediately.

Years of confusion.

Love for Sarah.

Pain from the wedding.

The shocking DNA result.

Everything collided inside her.

Finally...

She took one cautious step forward.

Victoria wrapped her arms around her.

The embrace was awkward.

Unfamiliar.

Fragile.

Yet the moment their hearts touched...

Something neither woman could explain settled deep inside them.

Neither spoke.

They simply cried.

Across the room, Ethan smiled faintly.

Perhaps this nightmare could still become something beautiful.

Then Detective Reeves quietly cleared his throat.

"I'm afraid..."

Everyone looked toward him.

"...there's another problem."

Victoria wiped away her tears.

"What is it?"

Reeves placed a second document on the table.

"I asked the laboratory to run one additional comparison."

"Against whom?"

"Ethan."

The room froze.

Ethan frowned.

"My DNA?"

Reeves nodded.

"The results came back this morning."

Victoria looked confused.

"Why would you compare Ethan's DNA?"

Reeves answered carefully.

"Because after twenty-five years..."

"I've learned never to ignore impossible coincidences."

He slowly turned the report toward them.

His expression had become unusually serious.

"The results don't answer every question."

"They create a much bigger one."

Ethan picked up the report.

His eyes widened.

"This..."

He looked at Victoria.

"...this says I'm not related to anyone in the Ashford family."

Victoria blinked.

"Of course you're not."

"You were adopted."

Reeves nodded slowly.

"Yes."

"But according to sealed adoption records..."

He looked directly at Victoria.

"...Ethan was brought into your family only three weeks after Charlotte disappeared."

Silence returned.

Then Reeves spoke the words that changed everything once again.

May you like

"And someone has erased every record of where he came from."
