CHAPTER 13

CHAPTER 13

Saving the Family

The words "The wrong baby was delivered." refused to leave anyone's mind.

The note lay in the center of the library table like a silent accusation.

For several minutes, no one spoke.

Victoria looked at Ethan, her eyes filled with sorrow.

She had spent years believing she had adopted an orphan out of compassion.

Now she knew he had become part of a carefully orchestrated scheme.

Ethan stared at the birth certificate of Noah Mercer.

"If I'm not Noah..."

He looked at Detective Michael Reeves.

"...then who am I?"

Reeves answered honestly.

"I don't know."

"But I believe someone else does."

He tapped Richard Hale's notebook.

"The person Richard said betrayed your family."

"The accomplice who killed him before he could reveal their name."

Victoria slowly nodded.

"They're the last person still protecting this secret."

An Unexpected Clue

Forensic specialists spent the entire night examining Richard's notebook.

Most of the pages contained payment records and coded transactions.

One page, however, had something unusual.

Under ultraviolet light, faded writing appeared between the lines.

It had been erased years ago.

The restored words read:

Safe House – Cedar Ridge Cabin

Emergency Contact: M. Ashford

Victoria's face turned pale.

"Ashford?"

"There are no other Ashfords besides us."

Reeves frowned.

"Not exactly."

He opened an old family tree.

Edward Ashford had one younger brother.

Matthew Ashford.

Unlike Edward, Matthew had never enjoyed the spotlight.

He had rarely attended family events.

Twenty-six years earlier, he abruptly moved overseas after a public disagreement with Edward over the future of the family business.

Victoria whispered,

"I haven't seen Matthew in more than twenty years."

Ethan looked up.

"Could Richard have meant him?"

"I don't know."

"But it's our first lead."

Cedar Ridge Cabin

By afternoon, Reeves led a police convoy deep into the mountains.

Cedar Ridge Cabin stood alone beside a quiet lake, hidden among towering pine trees.

The property looked abandoned.

Broken shutters.

Peeling paint.

A rusted mailbox.

Yet tire tracks in the mud were fresh.

Reeves raised his hand.

"Move carefully."

Two officers entered through the front.

Others surrounded the cabin.

Within seconds—

"Clear!"

The house was empty.

But someone had been there recently.

A fire still smoldered in the stone fireplace.

Coffee remained warm on the kitchen table.

Whoever had left had done so in a hurry.

The Basement

While searching the cabin, Ethan noticed scratches on the wooden floor beneath an old rug.

He knelt.

"The floor sounds hollow."

Officers pulled the rug aside.

A hidden trapdoor appeared.

Below it lay a narrow staircase.

Reeves descended first.

The basement contained shelves stacked with old boxes.

Maps.

Cash.

Several fake passports.

And a locked steel cabinet.

Inside the cabinet they found dozens of cassette tapes labeled by year.

All the way back to—

October 17.

Grace's hands trembled.

"I've seen these before."

Victoria turned to her.

"Where?"

"Richard recorded everything."

"He trusted machines more than people."

Richard's Voice

One of the tapes was immediately played using a portable recorder.

Static filled the room.

Then Richard's unmistakable voice emerged.

"Operation Phoenix is complete."

Everyone stood perfectly still.

The recording continued.

"Charlotte has been moved."

"The fire has begun."

"Victoria believes her daughter is dead."

Victoria closed her eyes, fighting back tears.

Richard sounded calm.

Methodical.

As though he were recording business notes rather than destroying lives.

Then another voice interrupted.

A man's voice.

Older.

Confident.

"And the boy?"

Richard answered,

"He's already with the doctor."

The second man laughed softly.

"Excellent."

Ethan felt his heartbeat quicken.

That voice...

Something about it sounded strangely familiar.

A Family Voice

Back at Ashford Estate, the recording was enhanced in the forensic laboratory.

Experts removed background noise and amplified the conversation.

When the cleaned audio played, Victoria suddenly gasped.

"No..."

Lily looked at her.

"What is it?"

Victoria's hands began to shake.

"I know that voice."

Silence filled the room.

Reeves asked quietly,

"Whose is it?"

Victoria whispered,

"Matthew."

Edward's younger brother.

Her brother-in-law.

The man she hadn't seen in over two decades.

Matthew Ashford

Detective Reeves quickly searched current records.

Matthew Ashford had officially lived abroad for years.

Yet financial records painted a different picture.

Every six months, large wire transfers had been sent from one of Richard Hale's private accounts to a company secretly owned by Matthew.

The payments continued until...

Three months ago.

Then they stopped.

Reeves frowned.

"Richard stopped paying him."

Victoria understood immediately.

"They argued."

"Or Richard no longer needed him."

A Mother's Choice

That evening, Victoria found Lily standing in Charlotte's old nursery.

The room had never been fully restored.

A few toys remained on dusty shelves.

The faded wallpaper still showed tiny painted stars.

Lily picked up a cracked wooden horse.

"This should have been my room."

Victoria nodded.

"It was."

Lily turned toward her.

"Do you regret adopting Ethan?"

Victoria answered without hesitation.

"No."

"Never."

She smiled sadly.

"I lost one child."

"I gained another."

"Ethan wasn't the lie."

"The lies were the reasons he came to us."

Lily's eyes filled with tears.

"He's still your son."

Victoria reached for her hand.

"And you're still my daughter."

"There is room in my heart for both of you."

Unknown to them, Ethan stood outside the nursery door.

He had heard everything.

For the first time since learning the truth about his adoption, the weight inside his chest eased.

He might not share Victoria's blood.

But he had never doubted her love.

Now neither did she.

The Last Recording

Before midnight, forensic technicians finished restoring the final cassette from Cedar Ridge Cabin.

Unlike the others, this tape had been recorded only three days earlier.

Richard's voice sounded older.

More tired.

"If you're hearing this..."

"I'm probably dead."

Everyone exchanged nervous glances.

Richard continued,

"Matthew believes killing me will erase the past."

"He's wrong."

Victoria's heart sank.

Richard had known.

He had expected to die.

Then came the most shocking sentence of all.

"Charlotte was never the true target."

The room fell silent.

Lily frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Richard answered from beyond the grave.

"The child Matthew wanted..."

"...was Ethan."

No one breathed.

Ethan stared at the recorder in disbelief.

Richard continued.

"Charlotte's kidnapping was only the distraction."

The tape ended abruptly with the sound of a door opening.

Then silence.

Reeves slowly switched off the recorder.

The room remained frozen.

Victoria looked at Ethan.

Lily looked at Ethan.

Grace looked at Ethan.

For twenty-five years, everyone had believed Charlotte was the center of the conspiracy.

Now Richard's final recording suggested something far more disturbing.

Charlotte had been stolen...

To hide another crime.

One that revolved around Ethan.

Somewhere in the darkness, Matthew Ashford had spent decades protecting a secret so dangerous that he was willing to kill Richard to keep it buried.

And if Richard's last words were true...

Ethan had never been an accidental replacement.

May you like

He had been the real reason everything happened.
