CHAPTER 10 — THE FALL

CHAPTER 10 — THE FALL
The gunshot shattered the darkness.
Rebecca heard someone scream.
Then silence.
For one terrible second, she couldn't tell who had been hit.
“Ethan!”
“Mom!”
His voice came from behind her.
Alive.
Rebecca reached backward and grabbed his arm.
“Are you hurt?”
“No.”
Another voice came from the darkness.
“Drop the gun, Nathaniel.”
Michael.
Rebecca froze.
The lights flickered.
Then came back.
Nathaniel was standing in the doorway.
His gun was on the floor.
And Michael was behind him.
Free.
Blood ran down Michael's forehead, but he was standing.
Rebecca stared.
“What happened?”
Michael looked at Nathaniel.
“He missed.”
Nathaniel smiled.
“No.”
He looked toward the window.
“I didn't.”
Rebecca turned.
The glass was shattered.
A bullet had struck the wall beside Ethan.
Nathaniel hadn't been shooting at them.
He had been shooting at someone outside.
A shadow moved beyond the broken window.
Then disappeared.
Michael rushed toward it.
“Stay here!”
Rebecca grabbed his arm.
“Who was that?”
Michael looked at her.
“Someone who didn't want Ethan to hear the rest of the recording.”
Nathaniel suddenly laughed.
Rebecca turned.
“You think this is funny?”
Nathaniel shook his head.
“No.”
He looked exhausted.
“I think it's finally over.”
Rebecca stared.
“What is?”
“The lie.”
Nathaniel sat at the table.
Michael stood behind him.
Rebecca kept her distance.
Ethan was beside Chloe.
The old tape recorder sat between them.
Rebecca looked at Nathaniel.
“You said Daniel is Ethan's father.”
Nathaniel nodded.
“Not biologically.”
“Then what?”
“Legally.”
Rebecca frowned.
“That makes no sense.”
“It will.”
Nathaniel leaned back.
“Your father knew Ethan wasn't Daniel's biological son.”
Rebecca stared.
“Then why did he let Daniel raise him?”
“Because Daniel was the safest person available.”
Rebecca laughed bitterly.
“Daniel?”
“Yes.”
“He betrayed me.”
“He did.”
“He cheated on me.”
“Yes.”
“He tried to steal the trust.”
“Yes.”
“And you call him safe?”
Nathaniel looked at Ethan.
“Compared to the alternative?”
Rebecca's face hardened.
“Who?”
Nathaniel didn't answer.
Ethan stepped forward.
“You keep saying my father.”
Nathaniel looked at him.
“Which one?”
Ethan froze.
“My biological father.”
Nathaniel's eyes narrowed.
“That is the question everyone has been asking.”
“Then answer it.”
Nathaniel looked at Rebecca.
“She deserves to hear it first.”
Rebecca shook her head.
“No.”
She took Ethan's hand.
“Tell him.”
Nathaniel sighed.
“Your biological father is—”
The door slammed open.
Everyone turned.
A woman stood there.
Eleanor.
Rebecca's mother.
Alive.
She looked at Nathaniel.
“You shouldn't have come here.”
Nathaniel stood.
“You shouldn't have left.”
Eleanor's face hardened.
“I left because you betrayed me.”
“No.”
Nathaniel stepped forward.
“You left because you betrayed everyone else.”
Rebecca stared at them.
“What are you talking about?”
Eleanor looked at her daughter.
“I was trying to protect you.”
Rebecca shook her head.
“Stop saying that.”
Eleanor's eyes filled with tears.
“I know.”
“Then tell me the truth.”
Eleanor looked at Ethan.
Then at Rebecca.
“Your father was not Daniel.”
Rebecca swallowed.
“We know.”
Eleanor shook her head.
“No.”
She took a breath.
“Daniel wasn't the father of the child I gave birth to.”
Rebecca's face went pale.
“The child you gave birth to?”
Eleanor nodded.
“You weren't the only one.”
Rebecca stared.
“Mom…”
Eleanor whispered:
“You had a brother.”
The room went silent.
Ethan looked at Rebecca.
Rebecca couldn't move.
“A brother?”
“Yes.”
“What happened to him?”
Eleanor looked toward Nathaniel.
“He was taken.”
“By whom?”
“Your father.”
Rebecca's voice broke.
“Why?”
“Because he was afraid.”
“Of what?”
Eleanor answered:
“He was afraid your brother would expose him.”
Rebecca shook her head.
“Expose him for what?”
Eleanor closed her eyes.
“For killing Arthur Vale.”
Silence.
Ethan stared.
“But Arthur is alive.”
Eleanor opened her eyes.
“Yes.”
Rebecca frowned.
“Then who did my father kill?”
Eleanor whispered:
“Arthur's twin.”
No one spoke.
The truth seemed too absurd to be real.
Rebecca looked at Nathaniel.
“You knew?”
“Yes.”
“You knew my father killed Arthur's twin?”
“Yes.”
“And Arthur blamed my father?”
“Yes.”
“Then why did Arthur stay hidden?”
Nathaniel answered:
“Because Arthur wanted revenge.”
Rebecca's eyes narrowed.
“Against my father.”
“No.”
Nathaniel looked at Ethan.
“Against his bloodline.”
Ethan stepped backward.
“What does that mean?”
Nathaniel said:
“Arthur wanted the Hale family destroyed.”
Rebecca's face hardened.
“And Daniel?”
“Daniel was his weapon.”
She looked at Eleanor.
“And you?”
Eleanor's voice trembled.
“I was his mistake.”
Rebecca didn't understand.
“What?”
“I believed I could control Arthur.”
“You couldn't.”
“No.”
Eleanor looked at Nathaniel.
“And neither could he.”
Nathaniel's expression darkened.
“Arthur wasn't the one who created the plan.”
Rebecca stared.
“Then who did?”
Nathaniel looked at her.
“Your father.”
Rebecca felt the room tilt.
Her father.
Again.
The dead man who seemed to stand behind every lie.
Every betrayal.
Every secret.
Eleanor continued:
“Your father knew Arthur would come after us.”
“So he created the trust.”
“Yes.”
“To protect me?”
“Yes.”
“And Ethan?”
Eleanor nodded.
“To protect him too.”
Rebecca stared.
“But why was Ethan the key?”
Eleanor looked toward the tape recorder.
“Because the trust was never about money.”
Rebecca's voice became quiet.
“Then what was it about?”
“Evidence.”
“Against whom?”
“Everyone.”
Eleanor looked at Nathaniel.
“Banks.”
Then at Michael.
“Politicians.”
Then at Rebecca.
“Companies.”
Finally at Ethan.
“And the people who controlled them.”
Ethan frowned.
“Why me?”
Eleanor's face broke.
“Because the evidence was placed inside your birth record.”
Rebecca stared.
“What?”
Eleanor nodded.
“Your father knew that if the documents were stored in a bank, they would eventually be found.”
“So he put them inside the trust.”
“No.”
Eleanor shook her head.
“He put them inside you.”
Ethan stepped backward.
“What?”
Rebecca grabbed his shoulder.
“What are you saying?”
Eleanor whispered:
“The original evidence was encoded into your medical records.”
Ethan stared.
“That's impossible.”
“No.”
Eleanor looked at him.
“When you were born, your father altered the hospital records.”
“Why?”
“To hide your real identity.”
Rebecca's eyes widened.
“That's why no one could find my original birth certificate.”
“Yes.”
“And why the trust needed my child.”
“Yes.”
Ethan looked at Rebecca.
“Mom.”
She looked devastated.
“I didn't know.”
Eleanor nodded.
“I know.”
“Then who does?”
Eleanor looked toward Nathaniel.
“He does.”
Nathaniel said nothing.
A loud crash came from downstairs.
Everyone froze.
Michael drew his weapon.
Rebecca grabbed Ethan.
Chloe moved behind the desk.
Footsteps.
Several people.
Nathaniel looked toward the door.
“They found us.”
“Who?” Rebecca whispered.
“Daniel's people.”
Michael shook his head.
“No.”
He listened.
“Not Daniel.”
The footsteps became louder.
Eleanor looked terrified.
“They're here.”
Rebecca asked:
“Who?”
Eleanor whispered:
“The Vale Foundation.”
The doors burst open.
Three armed men entered.
Michael fired first.
The room erupted.
Rebecca pulled Ethan down.
Chloe screamed.
Nathaniel overturned the table.
Eleanor crawled behind it.
Michael fired twice.
One man fell.
Another disappeared into the hallway.
The third raised his weapon.
Ethan grabbed a lamp and smashed it against the man's arm.
The gun fell.
Michael tackled him.
“Run!”
Rebecca grabbed Ethan.
“Where?”
“Basement!”
They ran.
The basement was dark.
Rebecca slammed the door.
Ethan leaned against the wall.
Chloe was crying.
“What's happening?”
Rebecca didn't answer.
She couldn't.
Her entire life had collapsed in one night.
Her marriage.
Her family.
Her father's identity.
Her mother's lies.
Her son's blood.
And now armed men were hunting them.
Ethan looked at her.
“Mom.”
She looked up.
“I'm sorry.”
“For what?”
“For not telling you.”
“You didn't know.”
“I should have.”
He shook his head.
“No.”
He took her hand.
“You protected me.”
Rebecca began crying.
“I thought I was protecting you from Daniel.”
Ethan looked toward the basement door.
“Maybe Daniel was protecting us from something worse.”
Rebecca stared at him.
“Don't defend him.”
“I'm not.”
He looked at her.
“But everyone in this story has a reason.”
“Not Daniel.”
Ethan hesitated.
“Maybe.”
Then the door opened.
Daniel stood there.
Rebecca froze.
He was holding a gun.
Chloe stepped backward.
Ethan moved in front of his mother.
Daniel looked at him.
“Move.”
Ethan shook his head.
“No.”
Daniel's eyes filled with emotion.
“Ethan.”
“You lied to me.”
“Yes.”
“You lied to Mom.”
“Yes.”
“You cheated on her.”
“Yes.”
“You tried to take everything.”
“Yes.”
“Then why should I move?”
Daniel looked at Rebecca.
“Because they're coming.”
Rebecca stared.
“Who?”
“Everyone.”
He lowered the gun.
“Arthur's people.”
Nathaniel's voice came from behind them.
“Arthur isn't behind this.”
Daniel turned.
Nathaniel had followed them.
“Then who?”
Nathaniel answered:
“Your father.”
Daniel's face changed.
“My father is dead.”
“So is Rebecca's.”
Nathaniel stepped closer.
“And yet both men are still controlling us.”
Daniel stared at him.
“What do you know?”
“Everything.”
“Then tell me.”
Nathaniel looked at Ethan.
“Not here.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No more secrets.”
He turned to Rebecca.
“I owe you the truth.”
Rebecca laughed.
“You owe me twenty-three years.”
Daniel's voice broke.
“I know.”
“Then start.”
Daniel looked at Ethan.
“Your biological father is not Arthur.”
Ethan stared.
Daniel continued:
“He isn't my father either.”
Rebecca whispered:
“Then who?”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“The man your father feared most.”
Rebecca waited.
Daniel opened his eyes.
“Michael.”
Silence.
Rebecca turned.
Michael stood at the basement entrance.
His face was empty.
Ethan stared at him.
“No.”
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.”
Rebecca looked at Michael.
“You?”
Michael didn't answer.
“Is it true?”
Michael slowly lowered his weapon.
“Yes.”
Rebecca's world stopped.
Ethan's face went white.
“You're my father?”
Michael looked at him.
“I am.”
Ethan shook his head.
“No.”
“I didn't know.”
“You've known me my whole life.”
Michael's voice broke.
“I found out when you were born.”
“Then why didn't you tell me?”
“Because your grandfather made me promise.”
Ethan stepped forward.
“You watched me grow up.”
“Yes.”
“You watched Daniel raise me.”
“Yes.”
“You watched him hurt my mother.”
Michael looked away.
“I failed both of you.”
Rebecca stared at him.
“Why?”
Michael's eyes filled with tears.
“Because I loved your mother.”
Rebecca froze.
Daniel looked away.
Michael continued:
“And because your father threatened to kill you if I ever told the truth.”
Rebecca's knees weakened.
She sat down.
Her mother had lied.
Her father had manipulated.
Daniel had betrayed.
Michael had remained silent.
And Ethan—
Ethan had been caught in the middle.
Then the basement lights came on.
A speaker crackled.
A familiar voice filled the room.
Arthur.
“Enough.”
Everyone froze.
Arthur's voice continued.
“You've spent twenty-three years looking for the wrong enemy.”
Rebecca stood.
“Show yourself.”
A screen descended from the ceiling.
Arthur appeared.
Older.
Cold.
Alive.
Beside him stood a man Rebecca had never seen before.
But Michael recognized him.
He whispered:
“No.”
Rebecca looked at him.
“Who is that?”
Michael's face went pale.
“Your brother.”
Rebecca stared.
The man beside Arthur looked almost exactly like her.
Same eyes.
Same jaw.
Same expression.
Rebecca couldn't breathe.
Eleanor covered her mouth.
“My son…”
The man looked directly into the camera.
Then smiled.
Arthur spoke:
“Rebecca, meet David.”
Rebecca's world shattered.
Her brother was alive.
The child her father had supposedly taken.
The child her mother had mourned.
The missing piece.
David looked at Ethan.
Then at Rebecca.
And finally at Michael.
His smile disappeared.
“You took everything from me.”
Michael stepped forward.
“David—”
David raised a gun.
“No.”
Arthur interrupted.
“Tonight, the Hale family falls.”
The screen went black.
A timer appeared.
00:30
Rebecca stared.
“What is that?”
Nathaniel looked at the screen.
“An explosion timer.”
Michael's face changed.
“The house.”
Nathaniel nodded.
“They're going to destroy the evidence.”
Rebecca looked at Ethan.
Then Chloe.
Then Eleanor.
“Can we stop it?”
Nathaniel shook his head.
“No.”
Rebecca's eyes hardened.
“Then we'll take the evidence with us.”
She grabbed the old recorder.
Michael grabbed Eleanor.
Ethan took Chloe's hand.
They ran.
Twenty seconds.
Nineteen.
Eighteen.
The basement doors burst open.
Gunfire erupted.
Nathaniel fired back.
Rebecca ran toward the emergency exit.
Ten seconds.
Nine.
Eight.
Daniel appeared behind them.
“Go!”
Rebecca turned.
“What about you?”
Daniel smiled sadly.
“For once, I'm doing the right thing.”
“Daniel!”
“Go!”
Five.
Four.
Three.
Two.
One.
The house exploded.
The blast swallowed the night.
Rebecca fell.
Ethan screamed.
Then everything went black.
Rebecca woke to sirens.
Smoke filled the air.
She opened her eyes.
Ethan was beside her.
Alive.
Chloe was bleeding from her arm.
Michael was unconscious.
Eleanor was gone.
Nathaniel was gone.
Daniel was gone.
Rebecca tried to stand.
“Mom.”
Ethan helped her.
She looked toward the burning house.
Everything was collapsing.
The walls.
The roof.
The past.
Then she saw something lying in the dirt.
A black metal box.
The original trust.
She picked it up.
Inside was one document.
One photograph.
And one handwritten sentence.
The first betrayal was not Daniel's.
Rebecca stared.
On the photograph were four people.
Her father.
Her mother.
Michael.
And David.
But there was something else.
On the back:
David is not your brother.
Rebecca's blood went cold.
She turned the photograph over again.
Another line appeared beneath it.
He is the reason your father died.
Rebecca looked toward the burning house.
Then toward the darkness where David had disappeared.
The fall had begun.
But Rebecca finally understood something.
The house had burned.
The evidence had survived.
And somewhere in the darkness, the real enemy was still watching.
Her phone vibrated.
One message.
From an unknown number.
You wanted the truth.
A second message appeared.
Now come find me.
And beneath it was an address.
Rebecca stared at the screen.
It was the address of the hospital where Ethan had been born.
May you like
Twenty-two years ago.
At exactly midnight.
