CHAPTER 8 — CHLOE'S DISCOVERY

CHAPTER 8 — CHLOE'S DISCOVERY
Chloe had never been afraid of Daniel.
Not when Rebecca discovered her.
Not when the penthouse was taken from them.
Not when Daniel's company began collapsing around him.
Not even when he stopped answering her calls.
She had always believed fear was something that happened to other people.
People without money.
People without connections.
People who had no idea how the world worked.
She had been wrong.
The first sign came at 2:13 in the morning.
A message appeared on her phone.
You should have stayed out of the Hale family.
Chloe stared at it.
She typed:
Who is this?
The reply came immediately.
Ask Daniel what happened on September 14.
Her stomach tightened.
She deleted the message.
Then another arrived.
And ask him who paid for your apartment.
Chloe froze.
Her apartment.
Daniel had told her he had bought it for her.
He had even joked that it was one of the many things she deserved.
She had never questioned it.
Why would she?
Daniel had money.
Or at least she had believed he did.
Now her fingers trembled.
She opened her banking application.
Then stopped.
A strange feeling settled over her.
She checked the property records instead.
The apartment wasn't registered under Daniel's name.
It wasn't registered under her name either.
The owner was a company.
A company she had never heard of.
Vale Strategic Holdings.
Chloe stared at the screen.
Vale.
The name meant nothing to her.
Yet she had seen it before.
In Daniel's office.
On an old folder.
A folder he had immediately taken from her when she asked about it.
She had forgotten about it.
Until now.
She called Daniel.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
Then she called the number of his office.
Disconnected.
Chloe sat on the edge of her bed.
For the first time, she wondered whether she had ever known Daniel at all.
At seven in the morning, Chloe went to the Hale Corporation building.
She expected security to stop her.
Instead, the guard looked at her identification and immediately stepped aside.
“Mr. Hale said you might come.”
Chloe frowned.
“When?”
“Yesterday.”
“He knew?”
The guard nodded.
“He left instructions.”
“What instructions?”
The guard looked uncomfortable.
“He said if you came here alone, we were to give you access to his private office.”
Chloe's heart began pounding.
“Why?”
“I don't know.”
She walked toward the elevators.
The building felt different.
Employees whispered when she passed.
Some looked away.
Others stared openly.
Everyone knew.
The mistress.
The woman who had walked into Rebecca's home.
The woman Daniel had chosen over his wife.
Chloe had expected hatred.
She hadn't expected pity.
That frightened her more.
She entered Daniel's office.
Everything looked untouched.
His desk.
His chair.
The framed photograph of Rebecca.
Chloe stared at it.
She had never noticed the photograph before.
Daniel had kept it facing him.
Not the one of himself with Chloe.
Not the wedding picture.
Rebecca.
For twenty-three years.
Chloe felt something twist inside her.
She walked to the desk.
A drawer was unlocked.
Inside was a black folder.
The label:
PROJECT 14.
Chloe opened it.
The first page contained a date.
SEPTEMBER 14.
Her heart raced.
The second page contained a list of names.
Rebecca Hale.
Arthur Vale.
Eleanor Hale.
Daniel Hale.
And one name Chloe didn't recognize.
Nathaniel Ross.
Below the names was a handwritten note.
Phase One: Marriage.
Chloe stopped.
She turned the page.
Phase Two: Access.
Another page.
Phase Three: Beneficiary.
Then:
Phase Four: Removal.
Chloe's hands began shaking.
Removal?
She kept reading.
The next page was blank.
The page after that contained a photograph.
Daniel.
Young.
Standing beside Arthur Vale.
Chloe stared.
She had seen that man.
Not in person.
In a newspaper article.
Arthur Vale had supposedly died twenty-three years ago.
She flipped the photograph over.
There was writing on the back.
Daniel knows the first part.
Below it:
He does not know the last part.
Chloe felt sick.
Then she noticed a small envelope attached to the back of the folder.
Her name was written on it.
CHLOE.
She stared at it for several seconds.
Then opened it.
Inside was a single piece of paper.
You were never chosen because Daniel loved you.
Chloe's breathing stopped.
You were chosen because Rebecca would trust you least.
She dropped the paper.
“No.”
Her voice echoed through the empty office.
“No.”
She picked it up again.
There was more.
If you are reading this, Daniel has already failed.
You are now the only person who can stop what comes next.
Chloe looked around.
“Who wrote this?”
A voice answered from the doorway.
“I did.”
Chloe screamed.
She turned.
A man stood there.
Older.
Tall.
Silver hair.
Calm eyes.
She didn't recognize him.
But he knew her name.
“Chloe.”
“Who are you?”
He stepped inside.
“Someone who has been watching Daniel for a very long time.”
“Get out.”
He didn't move.
“You want answers.”
“I want you to leave.”
“You came here looking for the truth.”
He nodded toward the folder.
“You found it.”
Chloe backed away.
“Who are you?”
The man looked at her.
“Nathaniel Ross.”
Chloe froze.
The name from the list.
“Why is your name in this?”
“Because I wrote the plan.”
“What plan?”
“The plan to protect Rebecca.”
Chloe stared.
“You're lying.”
“No.”
“Daniel told me Rebecca was obsessed with control.”
Nathaniel smiled faintly.
“Daniel told you many things.”
“He said her family was unstable.”
“She wasn't.”
“He said her father was corrupt.”
“He was.”
Chloe blinked.
“What?”
Nathaniel's expression changed.
“That's the problem.”
Chloe stared.
“You're saying Daniel was telling the truth?”
“About some things.”
“Then what was the lie?”
Nathaniel stepped closer.
“Who was controlling whom.”
Chloe sat down.
She was no longer afraid of Nathaniel.
She was afraid of the answers.
“Start from the beginning.”
Nathaniel nodded.
“Twenty-three years ago, Arthur Vale approached Daniel.”
“Why?”
“He wanted access to the Hale Family Trust.”
“Why?”
“Because he believed it contained information worth more than money.”
“What information?”
Nathaniel hesitated.
“Names.”
“Whose names?”
“People involved in financial crimes across three countries.”
Chloe's eyes widened.
“Banks?”
“Politicians.”
“Companies?”
“Executives.”
“Daniel?”
“Eventually.”
Chloe swallowed.
“Rebecca?”
“No.”
“Then why marry her?”
“Because Rebecca was the only person her father trusted enough to make the trust beneficiary.”
Chloe shook her head.
“And Daniel agreed?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Money.”
“Of course.”
Nathaniel looked at her.
“But that wasn't the real reason.”
“What was?”
“He believed he could control Rebecca.”
Chloe laughed bitterly.
“He couldn't.”
“No.”
Nathaniel looked at the folder.
“She was stronger than he expected.”
“Then why did you involve me?”
“I didn't.”
Chloe frowned.
“Someone sent me to Daniel.”
Nathaniel's expression changed.
“Who?”
“I don't know.”
“Think.”
Chloe remembered.
A dinner.
A woman.
A recruiter.
An introduction.
A message.
Daniel had seemed interested immediately.
Too interested.
She had thought it was chemistry.
Now she wondered.
“He didn't find me.”
Nathaniel nodded.
“Who did?”
Chloe closed her eyes.
“I was approached by a woman named Victoria.”
Nathaniel went still.
“Victoria Hale?”
“Yes.”
His expression darkened.
“Then you were recruited.”
“For what?”
“To replace Rebecca.”
Chloe stared.
“What?”
Nathaniel's voice became quiet.
“Victoria believed Rebecca would eventually discover the trust.”
“And she wanted Daniel to leave Rebecca?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because a divorce would trigger the final protection clause.”
Chloe frowned.
“Wait.”
She looked at the document again.
“Betrayal.”
Nathaniel nodded.
“The trust could only be activated if Daniel betrayed Rebecca.”
“So Victoria wanted him to cheat.”
“Yes.”
“With me.”
“Yes.”
Chloe felt sick.
“So the entire affair…”
“Was engineered.”
She laughed.
But there was no humor in it.
“Everyone used me.”
Nathaniel said nothing.
Chloe looked down.
“I thought he loved me.”
“I know.”
“Did he?”
Nathaniel hesitated.
“That doesn't matter anymore.”
“It matters to me.”
Nathaniel looked at her.
“Daniel doesn't know how to love people without wanting something from them.”
Chloe's eyes filled.
“Then why did he keep coming back?”
“Because you made him feel powerful.”
She looked away.
That hurt more than she expected.
Then she noticed another line in the folder.
Chloe — secondary contingency.
She pointed at it.
“What is this?”
Nathaniel didn't answer.
“What is the secondary contingency?”
He looked at her.
“If the affair failed…”
“What?”
“…you were supposed to disappear.”
Chloe went completely still.
“Disappear?”
“Yes.”
“Who was supposed to make me disappear?”
Nathaniel didn't answer.
“Who?”
“Daniel.”
Her face went white.
“No.”
“He was given instructions.”
“No.”
“He was told that once the trust activated, you would become a liability.”
Chloe stood.
“You're lying.”
Nathaniel handed her another document.
She read it.
Daniel's signature was at the bottom.
Her knees weakened.
He had signed it.
Chloe Bennett shall be removed from all Hale-related matters once Phase Four begins.
She stared at his signature.
Then whispered:
“He was going to get rid of me.”
Nathaniel nodded.
“Why are you showing me this?”
“Because Phase Four has begun.”
Chloe looked up.
“What does that mean?”
“Rebecca knows.”
Across the city, Rebecca sat in a car with Michael.
She hadn't slept.
Ethan hadn't returned.
Daniel hadn't called again.
She had one goal.
Find Eleanor.
But before she could do that, Michael received a message.
He looked at his phone.
“What?”
Rebecca asked.
Michael didn't answer.
“Michael.”
He turned the screen toward her.
A photograph.
Chloe entering the Hale Corporation building.
Rebecca frowned.
“Why is she there?”
Michael looked at the time.
“Because she found something.”
“What?”
“I don't know.”
Rebecca looked at him.
“You're hiding something.”
“No.”
“Then call her.”
Michael hesitated.
Rebecca noticed.
“You know her.”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“I recruited her.”
Rebecca stared.
“You?”
“Yes.”
“For Daniel?”
Michael nodded.
“Why?”
“Because Daniel needed someone he could use.”
Rebecca's face hardened.
“And you found Chloe.”
“Yes.”
“You helped destroy my marriage.”
Michael looked ashamed.
“I thought I was protecting you.”
Rebecca laughed bitterly.
“Of course.”
She took the phone.
“Call her.”
Michael dialed.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
Then a message appeared.
STOP LOOKING FOR ME.
Rebecca frowned.
“That doesn't sound like Chloe.”
Michael's face changed.
“What?”
“She wouldn't say that.”
Rebecca looked at him.
“How do you know?”
“Because she's afraid.”
Michael stared at the message.
Then whispered:
“She's in danger.”
Chloe left the office carrying the folder.
Nathaniel had disappeared.
She didn't know where he went.
She didn't care.
She only wanted to survive.
She entered the elevator.
The doors closed.
Then the lights went out.
Chloe froze.
“Hello?”
Nothing.
She pressed the emergency button.
No response.
Her breathing became faster.
Then she heard a sound.
Footsteps.
Inside the elevator.
She turned.
A shadow moved behind her.
She screamed.
The lights came back.
Nobody was there.
But the folder was gone.
Chloe stared at her empty hands.
Then a message appeared on her phone.
You should have stopped digging.
Another message followed.
Now you know too much.
She backed against the elevator wall.
The doors opened.
A man was waiting outside.
Chloe recognized him.
Daniel's driver.
“Mr. Hale wants to see you.”
Chloe didn't move.
“Where?”
“The house.”
“Which house?”
He smiled.
“The one Rebecca just left.”
Chloe's stomach dropped.
“No.”
The man stepped toward her.
“You should come willingly.”
She turned and ran.
Ethan sat in his car outside the old family house.
He had been there for nearly an hour.
He couldn't make himself go inside.
His phone contained the recording.
His grandmother's voice.
His father's name.
Arthur Vale.
His mother.
The trust.
Everything.
Then he saw someone approach.
Chloe.
She looked terrified.
Ethan got out.
“Chloe?”
She stopped.
“Ethan.”
“What are you doing here?”
“I need your help.”
“Why?”
She looked behind her.
“Because Daniel is trying to kill me.”
Ethan stared.
“What?”
“He knows I found out.”
“Found out what?”
Chloe handed him the folder.
Ethan opened it.
He read the first page.
Then the second.
Then the third.
His face changed.
“Phase One.”
He looked at Chloe.
“What is this?”
“Your family.”
Ethan continued reading.
Then stopped.
His eyes landed on the final page.
A handwritten note.
The child is the key.
Ethan's face went pale.
“What does this mean?”
Chloe whispered:
“I think it means you.”
He looked at her.
“Why?”
“Because everyone has been waiting for you.”
“For what?”
Chloe swallowed.
“Your twenty-fifth birthday.”
Ethan stared at the folder.
“That's three years away.”
“No.”
Chloe shook her head.
“Not anymore.”
“What do you mean?”
“The trust has already been activated.”
Ethan looked at her.
“Who activated it?”
Chloe's voice trembled.
“Your mother.”
Rebecca's phone rang.
Unknown number.
She answered.
“Hello?”
A woman's voice.
“Rebecca?”
Rebecca froze.
She knew that voice.
She had heard it in childhood.
On birthdays.
At Christmas.
In dreams.
A voice she had believed she would never hear again.
“Mom?”
Silence.
Then:
“Yes.”
Rebecca's hand began shaking.
“Where are you?”
“I can't tell you.”
“Why?”
“Because they're watching.”
“Who?”
“Everyone.”
Rebecca closed her eyes.
“I found the photograph.”
“I know.”
“I know you're alive.”
“I know.”
“Why did you leave?”
Her mother was silent.
Then:
“To protect you.”
Rebecca laughed through her tears.
“Everyone says that.”
“Rebecca.”
“Mom, I need the truth.”
“You're not ready.”
“I've been waiting twenty-three years.”
Her mother sighed.
“You need to listen carefully.”
Rebecca sat upright.
“What?”
“Arthur is not your enemy.”
Rebecca's heart stopped.
“Then who is?”
Her mother whispered:
“Your father.”
Rebecca couldn't breathe.
“No.”
“He betrayed all of us.”
“Why?”
“Because he wanted the trust.”
“But Arthur wanted it too.”
“No.”
“Then why did everyone say—”
“Because your father made sure everyone believed Arthur was the villain.”
Rebecca stared into the darkness.
“Where are you?”
“I can't tell you.”
“Mom.”
“I will see you soon.”
“When?”
“Before Ethan turns twenty-three.”
Rebecca frowned.
“Why?”
“Because after that…”
Her mother's voice broke.
“…they will come for him.”
The call ended.
Rebecca stared at the phone.
Michael looked at her.
“Who was it?”
Rebecca whispered:
“My mother.”
Michael's face went pale.
“What did she say?”
Rebecca looked at him.
“Arthur isn't the enemy.”
Michael closed his eyes.
“Then who is?”
Rebecca answered:
“My father.”
Michael shook his head.
“That's impossible.”
Rebecca looked at him.
“Nothing is impossible anymore.”
At the same moment, Chloe stood beside Ethan.
He was reading the last page of the folder.
His hands were shaking.
There was one sentence.
If the boy learns the truth before his twenty-third birthday, eliminate the witness.
Ethan looked up.
“Who is the witness?”
Chloe didn't answer.
“Chloe.”
She pointed toward herself.
“Me.”
Ethan stared.
“Why?”
“Because I know everything.”
A car suddenly turned onto the street.
Headlights flooded them.
Chloe grabbed Ethan's arm.
“Run.”
They ran toward the house.
The car accelerated.
A window rolled down.
A gun appeared.
Ethan pushed Chloe aside.
The shot shattered the window behind them.
They fell to the ground.
Another shot.
Then silence.
The car disappeared.
Ethan looked at Chloe.
“Are you hurt?”
She shook her head.
“No.”
He helped her stand.
Then he noticed something on the pavement.
A small black envelope.
It had been thrown from the car.
Ethan picked it up.
His name was written on it.
ETHAN HALE.
He opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
Eleanor.
Arthur.
And Rebecca's father.
Standing together.
Alive.
Twenty-two years ago.
On the back was a message.
Your mother is telling you only half the truth.
Ethan turned the photograph over.
His face went pale.
Because beneath the sentence was another line.
And your father is not Arthur Vale.
Chloe stared at him.
“What does it say?”
Ethan couldn't speak.
He handed her the photograph.
She read it.
Then looked at him.
“Then who is?”
Ethan's phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
A man's voice said:
“Your mother knows.”
“Who are you?”
“You'll find out.”
“Tell me who my father is.”
The man laughed.
“You're asking the wrong question again.”
“What question should I ask?”
The voice became cold.
“Ask Rebecca why she lied about the night you were born.”
The call ended.
Ethan stared into the darkness.
Chloe looked at him.
“What are you going to do?”
He looked toward the house.
“I'm going to ask my mother.”
Inside the house, Rebecca stood alone.
She had just received another message.
One sentence.
Chloe has the folder.
Then another.
Ethan has the photograph.
Then:
You have until midnight.
Rebecca's heart raced.
Midnight for what?
Her phone buzzed again.
This time there was a photograph.
Ethan.
Standing beside Chloe.
Taken only seconds earlier.
Rebecca's blood went cold.
Someone had been watching them.
The message continued.
Tell Ethan the truth before he asks.
Rebecca stared at the photograph.
Then she heard the front door open.
Footsteps.
Ethan entered.
Chloe followed.
Rebecca looked at her son.
He looked at his mother.
Neither spoke.
Finally, Ethan held up the photograph.
“Mom.”
Rebecca's heart broke.
“What?”
“Who is my father?”
Rebecca opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Ethan stepped closer.
“Don't protect me.”
Rebecca looked at him.
“Please.”
“Don't lie to me.”
She looked at Chloe.
Then at the photograph.
Then back at her son.
For twenty-two years, she had protected Ethan from the truth.
Now she realized the truth was no longer hers to protect.
She whispered:
“I don't know.”
Ethan stared at her.
“Then we're going to find out.”
Behind them, Chloe's phone buzzed.
She looked at the screen.
Her face went white.
Rebecca noticed.
“What is it?”
Chloe slowly turned the phone toward her.
A message.
YOU HAVE TEN MINUTES TO LEAVE THE HOUSE.
Then another.
AFTER THAT, REBECCA WILL LEARN WHAT YOU DID.
Chloe looked at Rebecca.
“I didn't do anything.”
Rebecca stared at her.
“What did they say you did?”
Chloe's eyes filled with tears.
“I don't know.”
The lights suddenly went out.
The house fell into darkness.
A voice came through the security system.
Calm.
Male.
Familiar.
“Good evening, Rebecca.”
She froze.
Daniel.
“You wanted the truth.”
The voice continued.
“So I'm finally going to give it to you.”
A pause.
“But first…”
Rebecca heard the front doors lock.
“…you need to decide which person in this room you are willing to sacrifice.”
The lights came back on.
And on the television screen was a live video.
Michael.
Bound to a chair.
Blood on his face.
Rebecca screamed.
“Michael!”
Daniel's voice came through the speakers.
“You have ten minutes.”
Ethan stared at the screen.
Chloe began crying.
Rebecca stood frozen.
Then the screen changed.
A second video appeared.
Her mother.
Alive.
Terrified.
And standing beside her—
Arthur Vale.
Rebecca's blood ran cold.
Arthur looked directly into the camera.
Then he said four words:
“Rebecca, trust no one.”
The screen went black.
May you like
And somewhere in the house—
a clock began counting down.
