CHAPTER 11 — THE LAST BOARD MEETING

CHAPTER 11 — THE LAST BOARD MEETING

At 11:47 the next morning, Rebecca walked into the Hale Corporation headquarters carrying a black metal box.

She had not slept.

Neither had Ethan.

The house was gone.

The evidence was damaged.

Michael was in the hospital.

Chloe had disappeared after the explosion.

Nathaniel was missing.

Eleanor was gone.

And Daniel—

Rebecca still didn't know whether he was alive.

Yet there was one place she had to go.

The boardroom.

Because at noon, the Hale Corporation would hold its final board meeting.

And every person who had helped Daniel destroy her would be sitting at that table.

Rebecca entered the lobby.

The receptionist stood immediately.

“Mrs. Hale.”

Rebecca stopped.

“Who called the meeting?”

The receptionist swallowed.

“Mr. Hale.”

“Which Mr. Hale?”

She hesitated.

“Daniel.”

Rebecca almost laughed.

Of course.

Even after everything, Daniel still believed he could control the room.

She walked toward the elevators.

Ethan followed.

“Mom.”

“Yes?”

“Are you sure?”

“No.”

He nodded.

“Good.”

Rebecca looked at him.

“Why is that good?”

“Because the people who are sure about everything are the ones who got us into this mess.”

For the first time that morning, Rebecca smiled.

Just slightly.

The elevator doors opened.

They stepped inside.

Neither noticed the man watching them from across the lobby.

A man with silver hair.

Nathaniel.

He raised his phone.

“She's going in.”

A voice answered.

“Good.”

Nathaniel looked toward the elevator.

“And if she finds the ledger?”

Silence.

Then:

“She will.”

Nathaniel frowned.

“What happens then?”

The voice replied:

“Everything burns.”

The boardroom was full.

Nine directors.

Three attorneys.

Two financial auditors.

And Daniel.

He sat at the head of the table.

His face was bruised.

His left hand was bandaged.

But he looked calm.

Too calm.

Rebecca entered.

The room fell silent.

Daniel looked up.

For a second, something almost like relief crossed his face.

Then he stood.

“Rebecca.”

She didn't answer.

She placed the black box on the table.

Every director stared at it.

Daniel's expression changed.

“What's that?”

“You know.”

“I don't.”

“Then you're about to.”

She sat down.

Ethan took the chair beside her.

Daniel stared at him.

“You shouldn't be here.”

Ethan looked directly at him.

“Neither should you.”

Several directors exchanged uncomfortable glances.

Daniel slowly sat.

The chairman cleared his throat.

“Mrs. Hale, this is a legally scheduled emergency meeting.”

Rebecca looked at him.

“Good.”

“We're here to discuss the company's financial position.”

“No.”

The chairman frowned.

“We are.”

Rebecca opened the black box.

“We're here to discuss fraud.”

The room went silent.

Daniel leaned forward.

“Rebecca.”

She looked at him.

“You should listen.”

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

“What are you doing?”

“Ending your company.”

The first document landed on the table.

A bank transfer.

Then another.

Then another.

The chairman picked one up.

“What are these?”

“Payments.”

“To whom?”

Rebecca pointed at Daniel.

“His private accounts.”

Daniel shook his head.

“Those aren't mine.”

Rebecca smiled.

“They were transferred through six shell companies.”

Daniel looked at the auditors.

“That's fabricated.”

Rebecca placed another document down.

“Then explain this.”

Daniel read it.

His face changed.

It was his signature.

Authorizing the transfer of company assets into an account controlled by Vale Strategic Holdings.

The chairman looked at him.

“Daniel?”

Daniel said nothing.

Rebecca continued.

“You told everyone I had been draining company funds.”

“I never—”

“You filed the complaint.”

Daniel stopped.

The room erupted in whispers.

One director asked:

“Is this true?”

Daniel looked around.

“There's context.”

Rebecca laughed.

“Of course there is.”

She opened another folder.

“Here's the context.”

She placed a recording device on the table.

Daniel's own voice filled the room.

“Once Rebecca is removed, the trust becomes accessible.”

Silence.

Then another recording.

“Chloe will make the divorce inevitable.”

The board members stared at Daniel.

His face went pale.

Rebecca looked at him.

“You used the company to fund the plan.”

Daniel whispered:

“Turn it off.”

She didn't.

His voice continued.

“Rebecca won't suspect Chloe.”

Then:

“She'll blame herself.”

The recording ended.

No one moved.

Daniel slowly looked at Rebecca.

“I was trying to get out.”

Rebecca's expression hardened.

“You had twenty-three years.”

“I know.”

“You had a family.”

“I know.”

“You had a son.”

Daniel looked at Ethan.

His eyes filled with regret.

“I know.”

Ethan's voice was cold.

“You don't get to call me your son now.”

Daniel looked away.

The chairman stood.

“This meeting is suspended.”

Rebecca shook her head.

“No.”

The chairman looked at her.

“We need legal counsel.”

“Sit down.”

“Mrs. Hale—”

“Sit down.”

Her voice was so calm that he obeyed.

Rebecca looked around the table.

“None of you are leaving.”

One director frowned.

“Why?”

“Because this isn't about Daniel.”

She opened the black box again.

“This is about all of you.”

The first name appeared on the screen.

BOARD MEMBER #1 — CHARLES MERCER.

Charles stood.

“What is this?”

“Your offshore account.”

“I don't have—”

“Bank of Geneva.”

He stopped.

Rebecca displayed the account number.

Then the transfer history.

Then the payments.

Charles sat down.

Next.

BOARD MEMBER #2 — HELEN WARD.

A pharmaceutical contract.

Bribes.

Hidden ownership.

Another director.

Then another.

One by one.

The boardroom became silent.

Rebecca had spent the entire night studying the evidence.

The trust didn't contain money.

It contained names.

Names of people who had spent decades hiding behind corporations.

Names her father had collected.

Names Arthur had wanted.

Names Daniel had tried to obtain.

And now Rebecca had them all.

The chairman looked at her.

“Where did you get this?”

Rebecca smiled.

“My father.”

A director laughed nervously.

“Your father has been dead for years.”

“I know.”

She looked at him.

“But he planned for this day.”

Daniel stared at the documents.

“You never knew.”

Rebecca turned to him.

“No.”

“You never understood what your father built.”

“No.”

Daniel's expression changed.

“He didn't build a company.”

Rebecca nodded.

“He built a trap.”

The doors suddenly opened.

Everyone turned.

A man entered.

David.

Rebecca froze.

He looked exactly like the photograph.

Calm.

Cold.

He walked to the table.

Daniel stood.

“David.”

David looked at him.

“Sit down.”

Daniel obeyed.

Rebecca stared.

“You're alive.”

David smiled.

“So are you.”

“Who are you?”

David looked around the room.

“Someone your father tried to erase.”

“You're not my brother.”

His smile disappeared.

“No.”

The room went silent.

Rebecca stood.

“Then who are you?”

David placed a folder on the table.

“My name is David Vale.”

Rebecca's heart stopped.

Vale.

Arthur.

David looked at Ethan.

“And I'm his son.”

Ethan stared.

“Arthur?”

David nodded.

“Arthur Vale is my father.”

Rebecca looked at him.

“Then why did my father hide you?”

“Because he was afraid of me.”

“Why?”

“Because I knew what the trust contained.”

Rebecca frowned.

“What?”

David looked around the boardroom.

“Your father's evidence wasn't just financial.”

He opened the folder.

Inside were photographs.

Political leaders.

Corporate executives.

Secret meetings.

Payments.

And finally—

Daniel.

Standing beside Arthur.

Rebecca looked at the photograph.

“When was this?”

“Twenty-three years ago.”

Daniel whispered:

“David…”

David turned toward him.

“You betrayed my father.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

“You were supposed to infiltrate Rebecca's family.”

“I did.”

“You were supposed to get the trust.”

“I couldn't.”

“Why?”

Daniel looked at Rebecca.

“Because I fell in love with her.”

David laughed.

“You call what you did love?”

Daniel had no answer.

Rebecca watched them.

Then noticed something.

A date on the photograph.

September 14.

Again.

She looked at David.

“What happened that night?”

David's expression changed.

“That is why we're here.”

The boardroom doors locked.

Everyone turned.

The lights dimmed.

A projector activated.

An old video appeared.

Rebecca recognized the room immediately.

Her father's office.

September 14, twenty-three years ago.

Her father was standing behind his desk.

Eleanor was beside him.

Arthur was sitting across from them.

Daniel stood near the door.

And another person was there.

Rebecca stared.

Michael.

Young.

Healthy.

Alive.

The recording began.

William spoke.

“If we continue, someone will die.”

Arthur replied:

“Someone already has.”

Eleanor looked terrified.

“Arthur, please.”

Arthur turned toward Daniel.

“Tell him.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Tell him what?”

Arthur said:

“The child.”

Rebecca leaned closer.

Her father looked furious.

“You promised.”

Arthur shook his head.

“I promised to protect him.”

William slammed his hand on the desk.

“You don't get to decide.”

Arthur replied:

“You already did.”

Then Michael spoke.

“I'll take him.”

Rebecca's heart stopped.

Her father looked at him.

“You understand what that means?”

Michael nodded.

“I do.”

Eleanor began crying.

“Please.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“I can raise him.”

Rebecca stared at the screen.

The room was silent.

Daniel's younger face looked nothing like the man she had known.

He looked frightened.

Arthur said:

“You'll raise him.”

Daniel nodded.

“But when the boy turns twenty-three…”

Daniel looked at him.

“What happens?”

Arthur answered:

“He comes back.”

The screen froze.

Rebecca whispered:

“Twenty-three.”

Ethan looked at her.

“That's now.”

The room went silent.

David looked at Ethan.

“Yes.”

Rebecca turned toward him.

“What happens when he comes back?”

David's expression was grim.

“He becomes the legal owner of everything.”

The chairman looked horrified.

“Everything?”

David nodded.

“The company.”

“The trust.”

“The evidence.”

“The accounts.”

“And every asset tied to the Hale family.”

Rebecca stared.

Ethan whispered:

“That's why they want me.”

“Yes.”

David looked at him.

“And that's why they will kill you before midnight.”

The boardroom erupted.

Directors shouted.

Attorneys reached for phones.

The chairman demanded security.

Then every phone in the room buzzed simultaneously.

One message.

THE COMPANY HAS BEEN TRANSFERRED.

Rebecca looked at her phone.

The message continued.

OWNER: ETHAN HALE.

Everyone stared at Ethan.

He looked at his mother.

“I didn't do this.”

Rebecca nodded.

“I know.”

Another message appeared.

EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY.

Daniel stood.

“No.”

Rebecca looked at him.

“It's over.”

He shook his head.

“No.”

“Daniel.”

“You don't understand.”

“I understand everything.”

“No.”

He pointed toward Ethan.

“They'll kill him.”

Rebecca stepped forward.

“Who?”

Daniel's face was terrified.

“The people who own the board.”

David corrected him.

“No.”

Everyone turned.

David's voice was cold.

“They don't own the board anymore.”

He looked at Ethan.

“They own nothing.”

Then the doors opened.

Police entered.

The directors froze.

The chairman turned pale.

One officer approached Rebecca.

“Mrs. Hale?”

“Yes?”

“We have warrants for several people in this room.”

The board members erupted.

“What?”

“This is outrageous!”

“On what grounds?”

The officer looked at Rebecca.

“Financial fraud.”

Then at Daniel.

“Conspiracy.”

Then at Charles.

“Money laundering.”

Then at Helen.

“Bribery.”

One by one, the board members were arrested.

Daniel remained seated.

The officer approached him.

“Daniel Hale.”

Daniel didn't move.

Rebecca watched.

For twenty-three years, she had imagined this moment.

His downfall.

His humiliation.

His fear.

But now that it had arrived, she felt nothing.

Daniel looked at her.

“Rebecca.”

She didn't answer.

“Please.”

She finally looked at him.

“You should have left when I asked.”

His eyes filled with tears.

“I know.”

The officer handcuffed him.

As Daniel was led away, he stopped beside Ethan.

“I am sorry.”

Ethan looked at him.

“I believe you.”

Daniel stared.

“But I will never forgive you.”

Daniel nodded.

“That is fair.”

Then he was gone.

The boardroom emptied.

Only Rebecca, Ethan, David, and Nathaniel remained.

Rebecca looked at Nathaniel.

“You knew this would happen.”

“Yes.”

“You knew Ethan would inherit the company.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because you wouldn't have believed me.”

Rebecca shook her head.

“You were right.”

David stepped toward Ethan.

“There's one more thing.”

Ethan looked at him.

“What?”

“You need to come with me.”

Rebecca immediately stepped between them.

“No.”

David raised his hands.

“I won't hurt him.”

“You're Arthur's son.”

“Yes.”

“Arthur tried to destroy my family.”

David's expression hardened.

“He tried to destroy yours because he believed your father murdered his brother.”

Rebecca stared.

“Your father's brother?”

“Yes.”

“Then why are you helping us?”

David looked at Ethan.

“Because Arthur is dead.”

Rebecca froze.

“What?”

“He died last night.”

“When?”

“During the explosion.”

Silence.

“Then who was controlling everything?”

David looked at Nathaniel.

Nathaniel lowered his eyes.

Rebecca's heart sank.

“Nathaniel.”

He didn't answer.

David said:

“He was.”

Rebecca turned.

Nathaniel finally spoke.

“Arthur gave me instructions before he died.”

“You worked for him.”

“Yes.”

“You manipulated Chloe.”

“Yes.”

“You manipulated Daniel.”

“Yes.”

“You manipulated me.”

Nathaniel looked at her.

“Yes.”

Rebecca's face hardened.

“Why?”

Nathaniel answered:

“Because Arthur wanted revenge.”

“And you?”

“I wanted the truth.”

Rebecca stared at him.

“What truth?”

Nathaniel looked at Ethan.

“That your grandfather wasn't the hero you thought he was.”

Rebecca's voice became quiet.

“What did he do?”

Nathaniel's expression changed.

“He killed a man.”

“Arthur's twin.”

“No.”

Rebecca froze.

Nathaniel continued:

“Someone else.”

“Who?”

Nathaniel looked toward the window.

“Your father killed Ethan's real father.”

Ethan's face went white.

Rebecca whispered:

“Michael?”

Nathaniel shook his head.

“No.”

“Then who?”

Nathaniel's answer was almost a whisper.

“Your father killed the man who gave Ethan his blood.”

Ethan stepped forward.

“Who was he?”

Nathaniel looked directly at him.

“Daniel Hale.”

Ethan froze.

Rebecca's face went blank.

“But Daniel isn't his biological father.”

Nathaniel nodded.

“I know.”

“Then how could he be Ethan's father?”

Nathaniel looked at her.

“Because Daniel wasn't the name of the man who was killed.”

Rebecca's heart stopped.

Nathaniel placed one final document on the table.

Rebecca picked it up.

The name at the top was:

DANIEL ROSS.

She looked at Nathaniel.

“Who is this?”

Nathaniel's face was full of regret.

“My brother.”

Rebecca stared.

“The man your father killed.”

Nathaniel nodded.

“And the biological father of Ethan.”

The room went silent.

Ethan couldn't speak.

Rebecca looked at the document.

Then at Nathaniel.

Then at Ethan.

The entire story had changed again.

Daniel Hale had spent twenty-three years pretending to be Ethan's father.

But the man whose blood Ethan carried was Daniel Ross.

Nathaniel's brother.

The man Rebecca had never known existed.

Rebecca whispered:

“Why did no one tell me?”

Nathaniel answered:

“Because your father made sure you would never remember him.”

“Remember what?”

Nathaniel looked at her.

“That you met Daniel Ross before you ever met Daniel Hale.”

Rebecca's face went pale.

“When?”

Nathaniel said:

“September 14.”

The date.

Again.

Always September 14.

Rebecca closed her eyes.

A memory surfaced.

A young man.

A café.

A smile.

A conversation.

A night she had completely forgotten.

And suddenly—

she remembered.

A man had once told her:

“If we ever have a child, I'll name him Ethan.”

Rebecca opened her eyes.

She looked at Nathaniel.

Then at Ethan.

“Oh my God.”

Ethan stared at her.

“What?”

Rebecca's tears fell.

“I remember your father.”

Nathaniel whispered:

“Then the last secret is finally coming back.”

Rebecca looked toward the window.

Outside, the city continued as if nothing had happened.

But she knew better.

The board had fallen.

Daniel had fallen.

The trust had changed hands.

Arthur was dead.

Yet the truth about Ethan's birth was only beginning.

And Rebecca had just remembered the one night her father had erased from her mind.

September 14.

Twenty-three years ago.

The night before everything changed.

May you like

The night she first met Ethan's real father.

And the night someone decided that Rebecca could never be allowed to remember him.
