CHAPTER 12 – Betrayal (1)

CHAPTER 12 – Betrayal (1)

The letter trembled in Ethan's hands.

For several long seconds, he simply stared at the elegant handwriting.

His mother's handwriting.

The same graceful script that had once written birthday cards, lunchbox notes, and little reminders tucked inside his schoolbooks.

Now...

It felt heavier than stone.

He unfolded the paper carefully.

The first line stole his breath.

My dearest Ethan,

If you are reading this, it means I was too afraid to tell you the truth while I was alive.

The room suddenly felt smaller.

He continued.

You have always believed that I wanted to control your future.

Perhaps I did.

Not because I doubted your heart...

But because I feared losing you the way I lost your father.

Ethan swallowed hard.

His father had built the Caldwell empire with ruthless determination.

He had trusted very few people.

After his sudden death, his mother had been left frightened and surrounded by advisors, lawyers, and businessmen who all claimed to know what was best for the family.

Arthur Whitmore had been one of them.

The letter continued.

Arthur convinced me that a young woman named Rosa Martinez wanted access to the Caldwell fortune.

He said she had planned your meeting.

He said she would eventually use a child to bind you to her forever.

Ethan's jaw tightened.

Every word felt like another knife.

His mother...

Had believed a lie.

A tear landed on the page.

He kept reading.

I asked Arthur only one thing.

I told him to delay her until I could meet her myself.

I never told him to lie.

I never told him to send her away forever.

Ethan's breathing became uneven.

Delay.

Not destroy.

Arthur had gone far beyond her wishes.

The final paragraph shook him to his core.

If I was wrong...

Please forgive me.

If Rosa truly loved you...

Bring her home.

Love the child if there is one.

And do not let my fear become your inheritance.

The signature blurred beneath his tears.

— Mother

Ethan slowly lowered the letter.

For years, he had blamed his mother for building walls around his life.

Now he realized...

She had become another victim.

Someone else had manipulated her grief.

Someone else had whispered poison into the ears of a dying woman.

Arthur Whitmore.

The next morning...

Arthur Whitmore arrived precisely at ten o'clock.

He was seventy-one years old now.

His silver hair was neatly combed.

His expensive suit remained perfectly pressed.

Anyone seeing him from a distance would mistake him for a respected retired attorney.

Only Ethan knew better.

James escorted him into the library.

Arthur smiled politely.

"Ethan."

Ethan remained standing.

"Sit."

Arthur slowly took the chair opposite him.

"I imagine you've discovered a great many things."

"I have."

"And I suppose you want answers."

"I want the truth."

Arthur sighed.

"The truth is rarely comforting."

"I'm not here for comfort."

The old attorney nodded.

"I expected as much."

Daniel quietly entered the library carrying several thick folders.

He placed them on the table.

"Before we begin..."

Arthur looked at the folders.

"What are those?"

Daniel answered calmly.

"Bank transfers."

"Employment records."

"Phone logs."

"Internal memorandums."

Arthur's expression changed ever so slightly.

"You've been busy."

Daniel replied,

"We've also interviewed twelve former employees."

Silence settled over the room.

Ethan spoke first.

"Why?"

Arthur looked at him.

"You already know why."

"No."

"I know what happened."

"I don't know why."

The old attorney folded his hands.

"For your family."

Ethan laughed bitterly.

"My family?"

"Yes."

"You were grieving."

"The company was vulnerable."

"The Haynes family offered stability."

"They offered investment."

"They offered political connections."

"You were about to inherit billions."

Arthur leaned forward.

"And then Rosa appeared."

Ethan's voice hardened.

"So you destroyed her life."

"I protected yours."

"No."

Ethan slammed his hand onto the table.

"You stole mine."

Arthur didn't flinch.

"I have spent fifty years protecting the Caldwell name."

"And in one afternoon..."

"...you nearly threw it away."

Ethan stared at him.

"Because I loved someone?"

"Because you were vulnerable."

"Because she wasn't wealthy?"

Arthur remained silent.

"Answer me."

The old attorney looked away.

"The world judges families differently."

"So you judged her first."

"I judged the risk."

Ethan's anger slowly transformed into disappointment.

"You never even met her."

"I didn't have to."

"You saw her scholarship records."

"You saw her neighborhood."

"You saw her last name."

"And you decided."

Arthur closed his eyes.

"I made the best decision I could."

"For whom?"

Silence.

Daniel quietly slid another document across the table.

Arthur looked down.

His face lost color.

"What is this?"

"A payment."

Arthur frowned.

"I don't understand."

Daniel pointed at the date.

"Three days after Rosa was turned away."

Arthur's hands stiffened.

The transfer totaled...

Five million dollars.

From:

Haynes Holdings.

Arthur looked back at Daniel.

"It's not what you think."

Daniel answered quietly.

"Then explain it."

Before Arthur could answer...

The library doors suddenly opened.

James looked unusually pale.

"Mr. Caldwell..."

Ethan turned.

"What is it?"

James hesitated.

"You should come."

"Now."

Outside...

The front gates of the estate were surrounded by reporters.

Television vans lined both sides of the road.

Camera flashes erupted endlessly.

Daniel frowned.

"How did they know Arthur was here?"

James swallowed.

"They didn't come for him."

He handed Ethan a tablet.

The screen displayed every major news website.

The same photograph filled each one.

Ethan.

Rosa.

Lily.

Walking hand in hand outside the hospital.

Above it...

A headline.

INSIDE THE BILLIONAIRE'S SECRET FAMILY—DID THE MAID PLAN IT ALL?

Another article accused Rosa of manipulating Ethan for financial gain.

A third claimed she had hidden multiple relationships.

Every story quoted anonymous "former university classmates."

Daniel's expression darkened.

"These interviews are fabricated."

Ethan kept scrolling.

Then he stopped.

One article contained photographs.

Old photographs.

Rosa at Columbia University.

Standing beside another young man.

Laughing.

Smiling.

The headline read:

MYSTERY MAN MAY BE LILY'S REAL FATHER.

Arthur looked genuinely confused.

"I had nothing to do with this."

Daniel looked at Ethan.

"I believe him."

Ethan's jaw tightened.

"Then who?"

His phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered immediately.

"This is Ethan Caldwell."

A familiar female voice responded.

"I told you..."

"...Rosa isn't who you think she is."

Victoria.

Ethan's eyes turned cold.

"What have you done?"

Victoria laughed softly.

"I didn't do anything."

"I simply helped the truth find reporters."

"You forged evidence."

"I only asked questions."

"You've crossed a line."

"No, Ethan."

Her voice became frighteningly calm.

"You crossed it when you chose her over me."

The line went dead.

Ethan slowly lowered the phone.

For several seconds...

No one spoke.

Then Daniel broke the silence.

"The photographs are real."

Ethan nodded.

"But the story isn't."

Daniel looked up.

"You know the man?"

A faint smile crossed Ethan's face.

"Yes."

"I do."

"Who is he?"

Ethan looked toward the reporters gathered outside the gates.

Then back at the photograph.

"That's Rosa's older brother."

Silence.

Victoria had launched her biggest attack.

And she had built it upon a lie that would collapse the moment the truth was revealed.

But Ethan understood something else.

This wasn't desperation anymore.

It was obsession.

And obsessed people...

May you like

Were capable of far worse than lies.
