CHAPTER 5 – A Father’s First Night (1)

CHAPTER 5 – A Father’s First Night (1)

The hospital was quiet after midnight.

The bustling hallways that had echoed with hurried footsteps and urgent voices throughout the day had settled into a peaceful stillness. Soft lights glowed above the nurses' station, and the rhythmic beeping of distant monitors became the soundtrack of the night.

Inside Room 214, Lily slept soundly.

Her tiny hand rested inside Ethan Caldwell's.

Even in her dreams...

She refused to let go.

Ethan sat perfectly still in the chair beside her bed, afraid that even the slightest movement might wake her.

He had spent years negotiating billion-dollar contracts.

He had spoken before thousands of investors without hesitation.

Yet now...

He didn't dare move a finger.

Because this moment felt more valuable than everything he owned.

He looked at Lily's peaceful face.

A faint bruise colored her forehead where she had struck the marble floor.

Her wrist was wrapped in a small pink cast decorated with smiling cartoon animals.

Her stuffed rabbit, Button, lay tucked beneath her chin.

She looked impossibly small.

How had he missed all of this?

The first tooth.

The first steps.

The first words.

The first nightmares.

The first birthday candles.

Three years of memories...

Gone forever.

He quietly lowered his head.

"I am so sorry," he whispered.

"I should have been there."

Across the room, Rosa watched him in silence.

She had expected anger.

Questions.

Accusations.

Instead...

She had watched Ethan spend the last four hours helping nurses adjust Lily's blanket, reading picture books aloud, and asking endless questions about her favorite food, favorite colors, favorite bedtime stories, and even the name of her imaginary friend.

He was trying to learn three years of fatherhood...

In a single evening.

It broke her heart.

Not because she pitied him.

Because she knew he was sincere.

Around one o'clock in the morning, Lily stirred.

Her eyelashes fluttered.

She blinked sleepily.

"Daddy?"

The word caught Ethan completely off guard.

He smiled.

"I'm right here."

She yawned.

"I had a dream."

"What was it about?"

"We had pancakes."

He chuckled softly.

"Did we?"

She nodded seriously.

"You burned them."

Rosa laughed for the first time that day.

Even Ethan laughed.

"I'm afraid that's probably true."

Lily smiled.

"It's okay."

"I still ate them."

He leaned closer.

"You know..."

"I've never made pancakes before."

Her eyes widened.

"Never?"

"Never."

She gasped dramatically.

"Mama!"

Rosa looked up from her chair.

"Yes, sweetheart?"

"Daddy doesn't know pancakes!"

The room filled with gentle laughter.

For just a moment...

The hospital didn't feel like a hospital anymore.

It felt...

Like family.

After Lily drifted back to sleep, Ethan quietly stepped into the hallway.

Rosa followed him a few moments later.

They stood beside the large window overlooking the city.

Rain still covered the streets below.

Neither of them spoke at first.

Finally...

Ethan broke the silence.

"Tell me everything."

Rosa folded her arms.

"Everything?"

"From the day I left."

She stared at the rain.

"You really want to know?"

"I need to."

She took a slow breath.

"The day after you disappeared..."

"I thought something terrible had happened."

"I called your phone."

"No answer."

"I went to your apartment."

"You'd already moved."

"I contacted your office."

"They said Mr. Caldwell was unavailable."

She smiled bitterly.

"I kept trying."

"For weeks."

"What happened?"

"I found out I was pregnant."

Ethan closed his eyes.

"You should have been the first person I told."

"I wanted to."

"So why didn't you?"

"Because eventually..."

"I believed them."

"The receptionist?"

She nodded.

"She looked me straight in the eye."

"'Mr. Caldwell has asked that you never contact him again.'"

Ethan frowned.

"I never said that."

"I know now."

"But back then..."

"I was twenty-four."

"Pregnant."

"Scared."

"And completely alone."

She looked away.

"I thought you had made your choice."

Ethan felt physically sick.

Someone...

Someone had stood between him and the woman he loved.

Someone had stolen every letter.

Every phone call.

Every chance.

"Do you still have the letters?"

Rosa hesitated.

"Most of them."

"You kept them?"

"I couldn't throw them away."

His voice cracked.

"I want to read them."

"Not yet."

He nodded.

"I understand."

At two-thirty in the morning, Ethan's phone rang again.

This time...

It was his oldest friend and attorney.

Daniel Harper.

Ethan answered quietly.

"What is it?"

"I've been trying to reach you for hours."

"I know."

"News is already spreading."

"How?"

"There were staff members at the mansion."

"And someone leaked everything."

Ethan sighed.

"What are they saying?"

Daniel hesitated.

"The headlines are ugly."

"'Billionaire Discovers Secret Daughter Hours Before Wedding.'"

"'Mystery Maid Claims He Is the Father.'"

"'Wedding in Crisis.'"

Ethan's jaw tightened.

"And Victoria?"

"Her public relations team has already issued a statement."

"What statement?"

Daniel sounded uncomfortable.

"They're describing the incident as..."

"...an unfortunate misunderstanding."

"And?"

"They say the child's mother is making emotional accusations during a stressful family event."

Ethan laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

"So she's already attacking Rosa."

"Yes."

"And social media is taking sides."

Ethan looked through the hospital room window.

Rosa was gently covering Lily with another blanket.

She had no idea the internet was already judging her.

"Daniel."

"Yes?"

"I want every surveillance recording from the mansion."

"I'm already requesting them."

"Good."

"I also want employment records."

"Every receptionist."

"Every assistant."

"Every executive who worked for me four years ago."

Daniel immediately understood.

"You think someone intercepted Rosa."

"I don't think."

"I know."

Back inside the room...

Lily stirred once more.

She opened one sleepy eye.

"Daddy?"

"I'm here."

She smiled.

"Can you stay until morning?"

He gently brushed a curl away from her forehead.

"I'll stay."

"Promise?"

"I promise."

She closed her eyes again.

"Good."

A minute later...

She was asleep.

Ethan looked at Rosa.

"I've made thousands of promises in my life."

She waited.

"But that's the first one..."

"...that actually scares me."

"Why?"

"Because I already failed her once."

Rosa walked over and stood beside him.

"You didn't fail her."

"I missed three years."

"You were robbed of three years."

He looked at her.

"There's a difference."

She nodded slowly.

"Yes."

"There is."

After a long silence, she quietly added,

"But Ethan..."

"If you're going to be her father..."

"...don't spend the rest of her childhood mourning the years you lost."

He looked at Lily.

"Spend it making sure she never feels those years again."

Her words settled deeply inside him.

At that moment...

Ethan Caldwell made a silent promise.

Not to his company.

Not to his shareholders.

Not to the legacy of the Caldwell name.

But to one sleeping little girl with a bandaged wrist and a stuffed rabbit.

No matter who stood against him.

No matter what secrets came to light.

No matter what it cost.

He would never leave her again.

Outside, the rain finally stopped.

And as the first light of dawn began to color the horizon, a father watched over his daughter through her first peaceful night together.

For Ethan...

May you like

It felt like the first sunrise of his life.
