CHAPTER 14 – The Last Lie (1)

CHAPTER 14 – The Last Lie (1)

The rain began just after midnight.

Heavy drops struck the windows of Rosa's apartment, turning the city lights into blurred streaks of gold and silver.

Inside, everything was quiet.

Lily slept peacefully with Button tucked beneath her chin.

Rosa had finally drifted off on the couch after another exhausting day.

Only Ethan remained awake.

He sat near the window, unable to sleep.

The past week replayed endlessly in his mind.

The piano.

The fall.

The hospital.

The courtroom.

Arthur's confession.

His mother's letter.

Every truth had uncovered another lie.

He should have been exhausted.

Instead...

He felt strangely alert.

Because something still didn't fit.

Victoria had never been reckless.

She calculated everything.

Every public appearance.

Every interview.

Every smile.

If she had launched such a vicious campaign...

It meant she believed she still had something to gain.

Or something to hide.

At 2:17 a.m., Ethan's phone vibrated.

Daniel.

He answered immediately.

"What happened?"

Daniel didn't waste a second.

"We found the investigator Victoria hired."

"And?"

"He's willing to testify."

Ethan stood.

"What changed?"

"Money."

"I offered more?"

Daniel laughed softly.

"No."

"His conscience."

Ethan frowned.

"He has a daughter."

Silence.

Daniel continued.

"When he saw Lily on television..."

"...he quit."

The meeting took place before sunrise in Daniel's office.

The investigator introduced himself as Marcus Reed.

He looked tired.

Ashamed.

"I've made mistakes."

Ethan remained silent.

"But I never intended to hurt a child."

Daniel placed a recorder on the table.

"Tell us everything."

Marcus nodded.

"I was hired by Eleanor Haynes."

"What exactly did she ask you to do?"

"Find anything that could damage Rosa Martinez."

"Anything."

Marcus sighed.

"I followed her."

"I photographed her."

"I interviewed former classmates."

"And?"

"I found nothing."

"Nothing?"

"Nothing dishonest."

He looked directly at Ethan.

"Your daughter has an extraordinary mother."

Ethan didn't speak.

Marcus continued.

"So they changed the assignment."

"What assignment?"

"They told me..."

"...if I couldn't find a scandal..."

"...I should create doubt."

The room fell silent.

"How?"

"I was instructed to crop photographs."

"Remove people."

"Change dates."

"Use anonymous sources."

Daniel slid several photographs across the table.

Marcus pointed to one immediately.

"This one."

It showed Rosa smiling beside a young man.

Marcus flipped it over.

Then produced the original.

The complete photograph revealed four people standing together.

One of them was Gabriel.

Another was their university professor.

The newspapers had deliberately cropped everyone else out.

Leaving only Rosa and Gabriel.

A lie.

Hidden inside a photograph.

By midmorning...

Daniel had enough evidence to dismantle every false accusation.

But Ethan wasn't satisfied.

"This clears Rosa."

Daniel nodded.

"It does."

"It doesn't explain Victoria."

"What do you mean?"

Ethan leaned back.

"She isn't doing this for revenge."

"She's protecting something."

Daniel looked thoughtful.

"You still believe there's another secret."

"I know there is."

Meanwhile...

Victoria sat alone in her penthouse apartment.

The engagement ring still rested inside its velvet box.

She hadn't returned it.

She couldn't.

Not because of its value.

Because it represented the future she refused to surrender.

Her phone rang.

"Ethan."

She smiled before answering.

"I was wondering when you'd call."

His voice was calm.

"We need to meet."

Her heartbeat quickened.

"So you've forgiven me?"

"No."

"Then why?"

"I think it's time we stop lying to each other."

She hesitated.

"When?"

"Noon."

"Where?"

"The Caldwell estate."

She smiled.

"I'll be there."

Exactly at noon...

Victoria walked into the grand library.

She wore the same elegant confidence that had once charmed investors and reporters.

But today...

Only Ethan was waiting.

No lawyers.

No journalists.

No family.

Just him.

He gestured toward a chair.

"Sit."

She remained standing.

"I'd rather stand."

"As you wish."

Silence stretched between them.

Finally...

Ethan slid a folder across the table.

"What's this?"

"Proof."

She opened it.

Her face remained composed.

At first.

Then...

She saw the original photographs.

Marcus Reed's sworn statement.

Bank transfers.

Phone records.

Private emails between her mother and the investigator.

Her fingers slowly stopped turning the pages.

"Where did you get these?"

"It doesn't matter."

She looked up.

"So..."

"...you've decided to destroy me."

Ethan stared at her.

"No."

"You did that yourself."

Victoria laughed.

Not happily.

Not bitterly.

Simply...

Tired.

"You know what your problem is, Ethan?"

"I'm listening."

"You think people choose greed."

She closed the folder.

"They don't."

"They choose fear."

"What were you afraid of?"

She looked toward the window.

"Being ordinary."

The answer surprised even her.

"My whole life..."

"I was told I had one purpose."

"Marry well."

"Protect the family."

"Expand the legacy."

She smiled sadly.

"Nobody ever asked me what I wanted."

"And what did you want?"

She looked directly into his eyes.

"You."

The room became quiet.

"I loved you."

Ethan answered honestly.

"I believe you."

Tears appeared in her eyes.

"But your love came with conditions."

He continued.

"You loved the version of me that belonged to your plans."

"The moment I chose my daughter..."

"...you chose war."

She couldn't deny it.

Because it was true.

Before either of them could speak again...

The library doors opened.

Daniel entered carrying a sealed envelope.

"It just arrived."

"What is it?"

"The forensic report."

Ethan frowned.

"Forensic?"

Daniel nodded.

"We analyzed Arthur Whitmore's financial records."

Victoria's expression changed.

Daniel slowly opened the file.

Then looked toward Ethan.

"You were right."

"There was one more secret."

"What is it?"

Daniel's voice became very quiet.

"Arthur Whitmore didn't keep the money."

Silence.

"The five million dollars from Haynes Holdings..."

"...was transferred again."

"To whom?"

Daniel looked directly at Victoria.

Her face slowly lost every trace of color.

"The final recipient..."

"...was an account in your name."

The room froze.

Victoria whispered,

"No..."

Daniel placed the banking documents on the table.

"Three offshore transfers."

"Each authorized with your personal security code."

Ethan stared at her.

"You knew."

She shook her head.

"No..."

"I didn't..."

But her voice lacked conviction.

Because deep inside...

She remembered.

A meeting with her mother.

Several documents she had signed without reading.

A promise that everything was "being handled."

The last lie had never been told only to Ethan.

It had also been told...

To Victoria herself.

And as the truth finally unraveled...

She realized something devastating.

She hadn't merely lost the man she loved.

May you like

She had been used as a pawn by the very family she had spent her entire life trying to please.
