CHAPTER 8 – The Custody Threat (1)

CHAPTER 8 – The Custody Threat (1)

The first lawsuit arrived before sunrise.

It wasn't filed in court.

It arrived in the form of headlines.

By six o'clock the next morning, every major news outlet carried a different version of the same story.

BILLIONAIRE FACES CUSTODY BATTLE OVER SECRET DAUGHTER.

MAID MAY SEEK FORTUNE THROUGH CHILD.

WHO IS THE REAL VICTIM?

Some stories portrayed Ethan as a father trying to make up for lost time.

Others painted Rosa as a woman who had hidden a wealthy man's child for financial gain.

No one asked Lily what she had lost.

No one ever asked children.

Inside the hospital room, Rosa stared at the television mounted on the wall.

She quickly muted it before Lily could hear.

But it was too late.

The little girl looked up from the coloring book Ethan had bought her the night before.

"Mama?"

"Yes, sweetheart?"

"What's a fortune?"

Rosa forced a smile.

"It means... having a lot of money."

Lily nodded thoughtfully.

"Like Daddy?"

Ethan looked up from the chair beside her bed.

"I suppose so."

Lily smiled.

"Then Daddy can buy Button a tiny pillow."

Rosa laughed softly.

"A tiny pillow?"

"He sleeps very hard."

Ethan grinned.

"I think Button deserves the best pillow in the world."

Lily nodded with complete seriousness.

"I knew you'd understand."

For a brief moment, the worries outside the hospital walls disappeared.

Inside this room, there were no reporters.

No lawyers.

No billion-dollar fortunes.

Only a little girl deciding whether her stuffed rabbit needed better bedding.

That peace lasted less than ten minutes.

Daniel Harper entered carrying another thick folder.

His expression alone told Ethan something was wrong.

"What happened?"

Daniel closed the door before answering.

"Victoria's legal team has gone public."

Rosa's smile faded.

"They're claiming you intentionally hid Lily."

"I did no such thing."

"I know."

Daniel continued.

"They're also suggesting Ethan shouldn't make emotional decisions until paternity is confirmed."

Ethan crossed his arms.

"I've already agreed to a DNA test."

"They know."

"So what's the point?"

Daniel hesitated.

"They're trying to control the public narrative."

Rosa looked confused.

"What does that mean?"

"It means..."

Daniel sighed.

"...if people believe you're dishonest now..."

"...anything you say later becomes harder to believe."

Ethan shook his head.

"They're attacking the mother of my child to protect a broken engagement."

Daniel looked directly at him.

"I don't think that's all they're protecting."

Later that afternoon...

The DNA samples were collected.

The procedure took less than five minutes.

Lily frowned as the nurse gently swabbed the inside of her cheek.

"Does this make me a superhero?"

The nurse smiled.

"No, sweetheart."

"Why not?"

"Because superheroes don't need cotton swabs."

Lily considered that.

"Maybe tiny superheroes do."

Even the nurse laughed.

Ethan watched the interaction quietly.

Every ordinary moment felt extraordinary.

He had never imagined fatherhood would be like this.

He had expected responsibility.

He had expected pressure.

He had not expected laughter over a cotton swab.

As Lily skipped back to her room, Ethan realized something.

His greatest business achievement had never made him smile the way this little girl did.

That evening...

Rosa packed Lily's backpack.

The doctors had cleared her to leave the next morning.

She folded Lily's favorite sweater carefully.

Then her hands stopped moving.

"What is it?" Ethan asked.

She didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she zipped the backpack closed.

"I'm leaving."

Ethan frowned.

"Leaving the hospital?"

"No."

"The estate."

Silence settled between them.

"I never asked you to stay there forever."

"I know."

"But I can't go back."

"You don't have to see Victoria."

"This isn't about Victoria."

"Then what?"

Rosa looked toward the window.

"I've spent two years cleaning rooms that were never meant for people like me."

She smiled sadly.

"Every morning I entered through the servants' entrance."

"Every evening I left before guests arrived."

"I was invisible."

Her eyes met his.

"I don't want Lily growing up where she's made to feel invisible too."

Ethan's heart sank.

"She'll never feel that way again."

"You can't promise that."

"I can."

"No."

Her voice remained calm.

"You can promise how you'll treat her."

"But you can't promise how the world will."

Ethan had no answer.

Because she was right.

That night...

Victoria sat inside her attorney's office.

Across from her was Richard Lawson, one of the most expensive family lawyers in the country.

He adjusted his glasses.

"The engagement is legally over."

"I know."

"The wedding deposits are irrelevant."

"I know."

"What exactly do you want from me?"

Victoria stared at the city lights.

"I want Ethan back."

Richard sighed.

"I don't think that's possible."

She looked at him sharply.

"Then I want Rosa gone."

Silence.

Richard folded his hands.

"Miss Haynes..."

"If you're asking me to fabricate evidence—"

"I'm asking you to find the truth."

"And if the truth favors Rosa?"

Victoria's expression hardened.

"Then find another truth."

The lawyer leaned back.

For the first time in twenty years of practice...

He felt genuinely uncomfortable.

Because there was something frightening about the calmness in Victoria's voice.

She wasn't grieving.

She wasn't heartbroken.

She was strategizing.

As though Ethan were not a man.

But an acquisition.

Across town...

Daniel received an unexpected phone call.

"Daniel Harper."

A nervous voice answered.

"My name is Angela Brooks."

"I'm sorry to bother you."

"What can I do for you?"

"I worked at Caldwell Enterprises four years ago."

Daniel immediately reached for a pen.

"What department?"

"Human Resources."

His instincts sharpened.

"Go on."

"I saw something."

"What?"

"A personnel file."

"What file?"

"It belonged to Rosa Martinez."

Daniel froze.

"There shouldn't have been a personnel file."

"I know."

"She never worked there."

Angela lowered her voice.

"That's why I remembered it."

"There was a red stamp across the front."

Daniel wrote quickly.

"What did it say?"

Angela swallowed.

"'DO NOT ALLOW CONTACT WITH MR. CALDWELL.'"

Silence.

"Who authorized it?"

"I only saw the initials."

"What initials?"

"A.W."

Arthur Whitmore.

Daniel slowly closed his notebook.

The conspiracy was larger than they had imagined.

Someone hadn't merely intercepted phone calls.

They had created an entire system to keep Rosa away.

Someone had planned this.

For years.

Meanwhile...

Lily climbed onto the hospital bed beside Ethan.

"Daddy?"

"Yes?"

"When I go home..."

"Can we still see each other?"

Ethan looked into her hopeful eyes.

"You'll see me as often as you want."

She smiled.

"Every day?"

"If you'll have me."

She giggled.

"I'll ask Button."

She whispered something into the stuffed rabbit's ear.

Then nodded seriously.

"He says yes."

Ethan laughed.

"Then every day it is."

Rosa watched quietly from the doorway.

Part of her wanted to believe him.

Another part remembered too many broken dreams.

She had learned that love alone wasn't enough.

Love had to survive lies.

Power.

Pride.

And the people willing to destroy it.

Outside the hospital...

A black luxury sedan remained parked across the street.

Inside, a man raised a camera.

He took several photographs.

Ethan holding Lily.

Rosa standing beside them.

Then he quietly made a phone call.

"I've got what you wanted."

A woman's voice answered.

"Good."

"Send them immediately."

The man smiled.

"What should the headline be?"

There was a brief pause.

Then Victoria replied coldly,

"Make it look like they're already a family."

Because if she couldn't win Ethan back...

May you like

She would make the entire world believe Rosa had stolen him.
