Chapter 10 – The Trap

Chapter 10 – The Trap
Emma stared at the frozen image on the monitor.
Samuel Brooks.
The man who had risked everything to help her.
The man who had given her Ethan's diary, the rusted key, and the map to Basement Seven.
He was standing beside Catherine Sterling.
And with his own hands...
He was opening the hidden door.
"No..." Emma whispered.
The word barely escaped her lips.
Lily looked up at her, confused.
"Emma?"
Her gaze remained fixed on the screen.
"This can't be..."
The recording resumed.
Samuel stepped aside, allowing Catherine and Isabella to enter the tunnel. Catherine appeared calm. She wasn't being forced. She even nodded to Samuel before disappearing into the darkness.
The hidden door closed.
The video ended.
Silence filled the control room.
Isabella's voice returned through the speakers.
"You trusted him."
Emma clenched her jaw.
"What did you do to that recording?"
A soft laugh echoed around her.
"I didn't have to do anything."
"You edited it."
"Look more carefully."
Emma replayed the footage in her mind.
No visible cuts.
No glitches.
No missing frames.
Everything looked authentic.
Yet something felt...
Wrong.
"People believe cameras tell the truth," Isabella said.
"They don't."
"They only show where someone was standing."
Emma frowned.
"What are you talking about?"
"They never show why."
The monitors went dark.
Only one screen remained illuminated.
It displayed Samuel.
Live.
He was walking through one of the upper tunnels carrying a lantern.
Completely unaware he was being watched.
Emma's heart raced.
"He's here."
"He came looking for you."
Isabella's voice sounded almost amused.
"Unfortunately..."
The camera angle widened.
Six armed guards emerged silently behind Samuel.
"He won't find you first."
"No!"
Emma instinctively reached toward the monitor.
Too late.
Marcus stepped into view.
Samuel turned just as the guards surrounded him.
The old man raised his hands slowly.
He didn't resist.
The screen went black.
Lily tugged gently on Emma's sleeve.
"They'll hurt him."
Emma's mind raced.
Everything was happening too fast.
She had to find Ethan.
Rescue Lily.
Save Samuel.
Warn William.
And somehow uncover the truth before Isabella erased it forever.
The room suddenly felt much smaller.
Much more dangerous.
A metallic click echoed behind them.
Emma spun around.
The elevator gate had silently closed.
Without anyone touching it.
She hurried toward it and pulled with all her strength.
It wouldn't move.
Locked.
Lily whispered,
"They've trapped us."
Emma searched the walls desperately.
There had to be another exit.
Then she noticed a narrow corridor branching away from the control room.
Unlike the brightly lit hallway, this passage remained in complete darkness.
Above the entrance, faded letters read:
ARCHIVE
She grabbed Lily's hand.
"We're going."
"Is that safe?"
"No."
Emma managed a weak smile.
"But it's better than staying here."
The Archive smelled of dust and old paper.
Thousands of files lined metal shelves stretching farther than Emma's flashlight could reach.
Cabinets.
Boxes.
Photographs.
Reels of surveillance tape.
Everything meticulously organized.
Someone had documented decades of lives.
Emma picked up the nearest folder.
A family photograph fell onto the floor.
The Harrison family.
Parents.
Twin boys.
A little girl.
Happy.
Normal.
The file's final page contained one stamped word.
COMPLETED
Emma opened another folder.
Another family.
Another photograph.
Another ending.
COMPLETED
Again.
And again.
Every family Isabella had entered.
Every child she had studied.
Every file ended the same way.
Emma felt sick.
Lily stopped suddenly.
"Someone's here."
Emma switched off her flashlight.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Measured.
Not running.
Not searching.
Approaching.
The sound echoed through the endless shelves.
Tap.
Tap.
Tap.
Emma pulled Lily behind a tall filing cabinet.
The footsteps grew louder.
Closer.
Then stopped.
Only a few feet away.
A flashlight beam swept slowly across the aisle.
Emma held her breath.
She recognized the shoes.
Marcus.
He stood silently for nearly a minute.
As if listening.
Finally, he spoke.
"I know you're here."
Emma remained perfectly still.
Marcus sighed.
"You don't understand what's happening."
Still no response.
His voice softened.
"If you stay hidden..."
He paused.
"...she'll kill the old man first."
Emma's heart pounded.
Was he trying to lure her out?
Or warning her?
Marcus continued.
"I can't stop her anymore."
Emma frowned.
Anymore?
"There was a time..."
His voice nearly broke.
"...when I believed we were saving children."
The words hung in the darkness.
Lily squeezed Emma's hand.
Marcus lowered his flashlight.
"If you can hear me..."
A long silence followed.
"...don't trust the evidence."
Then he turned and walked away.
Emma waited until the footsteps disappeared.
Only then did she dare breathe.
"What did he mean?" Lily whispered.
Emma slowly shook her head.
"I don't know."
But she remembered Isabella's words.
"Cameras never show why."
Nothing made sense anymore.
Everyone seemed to be lying.
And somehow...
Everyone also seemed to be telling pieces of the truth.
They continued deeper into the Archive.
Near the back wall, Emma discovered an enormous blueprint mounted beneath protective glass.
It depicted the underground complex.
Far larger than Ethan's drawing.
Far larger than Samuel's burned map.
At the center lay a massive circular chamber.
THE HEART
Surrounding it were seven smaller sectors.
Each marked with Roman numerals.
I.
II.
III.
IV.
V.
VI.
VII.
Emma frowned.
"They're not basements."
Lily nodded slowly.
"They're memories."
Emma looked at her.
"What?"
The little girl pointed toward the blueprint.
"Ethan said every room keeps a story."
Emma stared at the map.
Seven sectors.
Seven stories.
Basement Seven wasn't simply another level.
It was only one part of something much larger.
Suddenly, the emergency lights throughout the Archive began flashing red.
A mechanical voice echoed overhead.
Security breach detected.
Security breach detected.
Emma grabbed Lily's hand.
"We have to move."
The loudspeakers crackled again.
This time...
William Sterling's voice filled the room.
"Emma!"
She froze.
It sounded exactly like him.
"I'm downstairs!"
Lily's frightened eyes widened.
"Don't answer."
"But that's William."
Lily shook her head violently.
"They make voices."
Emma remembered Samuel's warning.
If you hear someone calling your name... make sure you can see their face.
The voice came again.
Closer this time.
"Emma! It's me!"
For one dangerous moment, she almost believed it.
Then...
A second voice echoed from the opposite direction.
Also William.
"Emma! This way!"
Two identical voices.
Calling from different corridors.
One of them had to be fake.
Or...
Both.
The lights suddenly went out.
Complete darkness swallowed the Archive.
Emma felt Lily's hand tighten around hers.
Then...
Another small hand slipped into Emma's free hand.
Warm.
Tiny.
Emma smiled with relief.
"Ethan?"
The child answered softly.
"Yes."
Emma's eyes filled with tears.
She squeezed the little hand.
"I've got you."
A tiny voice whispered back.
"No..."
It wasn't Ethan.
It wasn't Lily.
And it wasn't a child.
The voice belonged to an adult woman.
Cold.
Calm.
May you like
Standing inches from her ear.
"You've got me."
