Chapter 13 – The Hidden Room

Chapter 13 – The Hidden Room

The first steel barrier crashed into place with a deafening roar.

BOOM!

The vibration rippled through every tunnel beneath Sterling Manor.

Dust rained from the ceiling.

Ancient stone groaned as the underground maze began sealing itself section by section.

Emma tightened her grip on Lily's hand.

"We have to keep moving."

The narrow escape passage twisted sharply upward before splitting into three separate tunnels.

Left.

Right.

Straight ahead.

Each passage looked identical.

Then, above the intersections, faded brass plaques slowly emerged from the walls as hidden mechanisms shifted into place.

ARCHIVE

HEART

FOUNDATION

The tunnels were changing again.

Behind them, flames raced through the secret office.

Smoke poured into the passage.

Lily coughed violently.

Emma wrapped her jacket around the little girl's shoulders.

"Stay close."

"I will."

The child looked back into the smoke.

"He's waiting."

Emma stopped.

"Who?"

"The man behind the wall."

A chill spread through Emma's body.

"What man?"

Lily's blue eyes remained fixed on the darkness.

"He never comes out."

Elsewhere in the underground complex...

Marcus unlocked Ethan's handcuffs.

The boy stumbled forward, his legs weak after days of confinement.

Marcus caught him before he fell.

"We don't have much time."

"Where's Emma?"

"Looking for you."

"And Dad?"

Marcus hesitated.

"He's here."

Hope flashed across Ethan's exhausted face.

"My dad came?"

"He never stopped loving you."

Marcus looked away.

"He just stopped seeing."

William followed Olivia through another forgotten tunnel.

Every few steps, another steel barrier slammed shut somewhere behind them.

The exits were disappearing.

William struggled to process everything.

"Olivia..."

She didn't slow down.

"Later."

"My mother said you abandoned us."

Olivia smiled sadly.

"No."

"My father said you stole family money."

"No."

"They said—"

"They said whatever they needed to."

William fell silent.

For the first time in his life, he wondered how much of his childhood had been manufactured.

Emma chose the tunnel marked FOUNDATION.

Something about the word felt important.

The passage narrowed before opening into a circular chamber unlike any she had seen before.

The room was almost perfectly preserved.

Old oak furniture.

Dust-covered portraits.

Bookshelves filled with leather-bound journals.

It looked less like a prison...

And more like a forgotten home.

In the center stood a nursery cradle.

Still gently rocking.

Emma's heartbeat quickened.

There was no breeze.

Nothing had touched it.

Yet it moved.

Slowly.

Back.

And forth.

Lily whispered,

"This is the Hidden Room."

Emma looked around.

"Have you been here before?"

The little girl nodded.

"Only once."

"What happened?"

"She cried."

Emma frowned.

"Who cried?"

"The lady."

Emma approached the cradle carefully.

Inside lay no child.

Only a faded blue baby blanket.

Embroidered into one corner were delicate silver letters.

S.M.

The same initials from Isabella's white glove.

The same initials from Sarah Morgan's letters.

Emma picked up the blanket.

Folded beneath it was a birth certificate.

The paper had yellowed with age but remained readable.

She unfolded it.

Her breath caught.

Child's Name: Sophia Morgan

Mother: Sarah Morgan

Father: Richard Sterling

Date of Birth...

Forty-two years earlier.

Emma stared.

Sophia Morgan.

The daughter Sarah had written to.

The daughter who had vanished from every Sterling family record.

The little girl who had been erased.

A loose floorboard creaked beneath Emma's feet.

She knelt and lifted it.

Beneath the floor lay a small iron box.

Inside...

Hundreds of photographs.

Letters.

Medical reports.

Court documents.

Every page told the same story.

Richard Sterling had secretly annulled his marriage to Sarah using forged records.

He had declared Sophia legally dead before her first birthday.

Months later...

He married Eleanor Sterling.

History had simply rewritten itself.

Emma turned another page.

A newspaper clipping slipped into her lap.

LOCAL TODDLER MISSING

Sophia Morgan, Age 3

Emma frowned.

That made no sense.

The official records claimed Sophia died as an infant.

Yet here was a newspaper searching for her at age three.

Someone had lied twice.

A voice echoed softly behind Emma.

"You found it."

She spun around.

Olivia Bennett stood in the doorway.

William was beside her.

For a moment, no one spoke.

William's eyes met Emma's.

Neither needed to ask.

Everything had changed.

"You found Ethan?" Emma asked.

William's face fell.

"No."

"Marcus has him."

Olivia stepped inside.

"Then we still have time."

Emma handed Olivia the birth certificate.

"Who was Sophia Morgan?"

Olivia looked at the paper for a long moment.

Tears filled her eyes.

"My sister."

Emma froze.

"You mean..."

Olivia nodded.

"Richard Sterling stole us both."

William stared in disbelief.

"My father?"

Olivia looked directly at him.

"The man you called father."

She emphasized the words.

"He wasn't the man the newspapers celebrated."

Emma remembered Isabella's message.

Ask William why his real last name isn't Sterling.

She looked toward William.

"What did she mean?"

William slowly shook his head.

"I don't know."

Olivia closed her eyes.

"Because..."

She took a deep breath.

"...Richard Sterling wasn't your father."

Silence.

The room seemed to stop breathing.

William stared at her.

"No."

"It's true."

"My birth certificate..."

"Was forged."

"My mother..."

"Eleanor couldn't have children."

William stepped backward.

Every certainty he'd carried for fifty-two years crumbled.

"Then..."

His voice broke.

"...who am I?"

Olivia walked toward the fireplace.

She reached inside the cold stone hearth and pressed a loose brick.

A hidden compartment slid open.

Inside rested an old leather journal.

She handed it to William.

"It belonged to Sarah."

His hands trembled as he opened it.

The first page contained a family photograph.

Sarah.

A young man Emma had never seen.

And a baby.

William.

Below the picture, written in careful handwriting, were six devastating words.

Our son, Daniel Morgan Sterling.

Morgan.

Not Sterling.

William's real surname had never been Sterling.

It had always been Morgan.

Before anyone could speak, the entire Hidden Room shook violently.

A deep explosion echoed overhead.

Cracks spread across the ceiling.

Pieces of stone crashed onto the floor.

Lily screamed.

Olivia looked upward in horror.

"They've reached the foundation."

Marcus's voice suddenly crackled through an old intercom hidden inside the wall.

His words came in frantic bursts through heavy static.

"Emma... William... if you can hear me..."

Another explosion interrupted him.

Then his voice returned.

"They've lit the gas mains..."

William's eyes widened.

"The whole mansion..."

Marcus finished the sentence.

"...is going to collapse."

Then, through the static, came another sound.

A child's frightened cry.

"Dad!"

Ethan.

Alive.

But terrifyingly close.

William turned toward the voice without hesitation.

"Ethan!"

Olivia grabbed his arm.

"No!"

William pulled free.

"My son needs me."

Olivia's expression filled with dread.

"That's exactly what she wants."

At that moment, from somewhere beyond the collapsing tunnels, Isabella's voice echoed one final time.

May you like

"Welcome to the last room."

Then every light beneath Sterling Manor went out.
