Chapter 14 – The Last Chase

Chapter 14 – The Last Chase

Darkness swallowed the Hidden Room.

Not the ordinary darkness of a power outage.

This darkness felt alive.

The emergency lights had failed. The backup generators had gone silent. Even the faint glow from the burning mansion above disappeared, as though the earth itself had sealed them away.

For several agonizing seconds, no one moved.

Then Ethan screamed again.

"DAD!"

This time the voice echoed through the collapsing tunnels.

William didn't hesitate.

"Ethan!"

He lunged toward the sound.

"William, wait!" Emma shouted.

But it was too late.

He vanished into the darkness.

"Give me the flashlight."

Olivia's voice was calm despite the chaos.

Emma handed it to her.

The beam flickered before revealing a horrifying sight.

Fresh cracks spread across the ceiling like lightning.

Stone dust drifted continuously through the air.

One of the massive support pillars had split down the middle.

Sterling Manor wasn't simply burning.

It was sinking.

Olivia looked toward the fractured pillar.

"We have minutes."

"No..."

Lily whispered.

"Less."

Emma turned toward the tunnel where William had disappeared.

"I'm going after him."

Olivia caught her wrist.

"If you follow the voice..."

She paused.

"...make sure it's really his."

Emma remembered Samuel's warning.

Always see the face.

She nodded once.

Then she ran.

William raced blindly through the tunnels.

"Ethan!"

The flashlight on his phone had shattered during the last cave-in, leaving him with only the faint emergency strips embedded along the walls.

Again he heard the voice.

"Dad..."

Closer now.

"I'm here!"

William rounded another corner.

At the end of the corridor stood a small figure.

A little boy.

Head lowered.

Thin shoulders trembling.

"Ethan!"

William rushed forward.

The child slowly lifted his head.

It wasn't Ethan.

It was a cracked porcelain doll dressed in a child's clothes.

Its glass eyes reflected the dim red emergency lights.

A hidden speaker inside the doll repeated Ethan's voice.

"Dad..."

William froze.

The doll smiled.

Then exploded.

A flash grenade erupted inside the porcelain shell.

The blast threw William against the wall.

His ears rang violently.

Blood trickled down his forehead.

He struggled to stand.

Someone stepped out of the smoke.

Isabella.

She wore the same elegant ivory dress from the gala.

Untouched by dust.

Untouched by fire.

Almost unreal.

"You finally came."

William stared at her.

"Where's my son?"

She tilted her head.

"You've asked the wrong question again."

His voice shook with rage.

"Where is Ethan?"

"Safe."

"You call this safe?"

"No."

She smiled sadly.

"I call it necessary."

Emma followed the collapsing tunnel, guided by distant echoes.

The floor suddenly shifted beneath her feet.

A section of stone gave way.

She barely caught the edge before plunging into darkness.

Below her lay a shaft nearly fifty feet deep.

At the bottom...

Ancient machinery.

Massive gears continued turning despite the collapse.

The entire underground maze was moving.

Even now.

She pulled herself back onto solid ground.

Ahead, she spotted something glinting in the dust.

Samuel's lantern.

Shattered.

Beside it...

Blood.

Fresh.

"Samuel!"

No answer.

Only silence.

Then a faint groan echoed from beneath a pile of broken timber.

Emma rushed over.

Samuel lay trapped under a fallen beam.

His breathing was shallow.

His face pale.

"You came back," he whispered.

"I'm getting you out."

"No."

Emma ignored him, straining against the heavy timber.

It didn't move.

Samuel reached into his pocket.

With trembling fingers, he handed her a brass medallion engraved with the Morgan family crest.

"You'll need this."

"I'm not leaving you."

"You don't have a choice."

Tears welled in Emma's eyes.

"You promised we'd end this."

Samuel smiled weakly.

"We still can."

He pointed toward a narrow tunnel behind the fallen beam.

"The Heart."

Emma looked at the passage.

"I can't leave you."

Samuel's breathing became weaker.

"Listen carefully."

She leaned closer.

"There was never a treasure beneath Sterling Manor."

"What?"

"The inheritance..."

He coughed violently.

"...wasn't money."

"Then what is it?"

Samuel looked directly into her eyes.

"The children."

Emma frowned.

"I don't understand."

"They were choosing heirs."

The words struck like lightning.

"Heirs?"

Samuel nodded faintly.

"Richard believed blood could be..."

He struggled for breath.

"...improved."

Emma's stomach turned.

"The families..."

"They weren't random."

Another cough.

"They all shared..."

His voice faded.

"...the same ancestor."

Before Emma could ask another question, a second collapse shook the tunnel.

The fallen beam shifted.

Samuel pushed Emma away with surprising strength.

"Go!"

The ceiling gave way.

Stone and timber crashed down.

Dust filled the passage.

When it settled...

Samuel was gone.

Buried beneath the rubble.

Emma stood frozen.

For a moment she couldn't move.

Then she remembered Ethan.

She wiped away her tears and ran.

In the central chamber known as the Heart...

Marcus stood protectively in front of Ethan.

Around them, the circular room trembled violently.

Steel doors sealed one after another.

The only remaining exit led toward the main control platform.

Isabella entered calmly.

Marcus drew his pistol.

"Stop."

She looked almost disappointed.

"You finally chose."

"I should've chosen years ago."

She glanced at Ethan.

"He'll never forgive you."

Marcus lowered the gun slightly.

"I don't need forgiveness."

He raised it again.

"I need him alive."

A single gunshot shattered the silence.

Emma reached the entrance just in time to hear it.

She froze.

Smoke drifted across the chamber.

Marcus slowly collapsed to his knees.

Blood spread across his shirt.

The pistol slipped from his hand.

Ethan screamed.

"Marcus!"

The older man looked at the frightened boy one last time.

"I'm sorry..."

He smiled faintly.

"...for everything."

Then he fell.

Emma's eyes filled with tears.

Marcus had died protecting the child he once imprisoned.

Before Isabella could react, Emma sprinted forward and grabbed Ethan.

"It's okay."

He threw his arms around her.

"I knew you'd come."

Emma held him tightly.

"I'm never leaving you again."

Across the chamber, William staggered in, still bleeding from the flash grenade.

"Ethan!"

The boy looked up.

"Dad!"

Father and son embraced for the first time in days.

William broke down completely.

"I'm so sorry."

Ethan cried into his father's shoulder.

"I thought you forgot me."

William closed his eyes.

"I'll spend the rest of my life making that right."

A slow clap echoed through the chamber.

Everyone turned.

Isabella stood alone on the control platform overlooking the Heart.

Behind her, the ancient machinery continued turning.

"You finally became the father he needed."

William stared at her.

"Why?"

She looked at Ethan.

Then at William.

Finally at Emma.

"Because this family deserved one honest ending."

Emma shook her head.

"You murdered people."

"I exposed monsters."

"You imprisoned children."

"I hid them."

"From whom?"

Isabella's smile disappeared.

"From the Sterlings."

Before anyone could respond, Olivia entered the chamber from another tunnel.

She looked directly at Isabella.

"It's over."

For the first time...

Isabella looked genuinely surprised.

"You survived."

Olivia nodded.

"So did the truth."

She held up Sarah Morgan's journal.

"The police have everything."

Isabella stared silently.

Then she laughed.

Not wildly.

Not bitterly.

Simply...

Sadly.

"You still think this ends with me."

She reached behind her and pulled a small brass lever.

Emma's eyes widened.

"No!"

Olivia screamed,

"Don't!"

Isabella looked at William one final time.

"Your father built this prison."

She smiled through tears.

"I only inherited it."

She pulled the lever.

The Heart shuddered violently.

The entire underground complex began collapsing.

Massive gears tore free from the walls.

Steel supports twisted apart.

The floor split down the middle.

Emma grabbed Ethan.

William pulled Lily into his arms.

Olivia rushed toward the emergency tunnel.

Above them, Sterling Manor gave one final, deafening groan.

Then the mansion began to fall.
