Chapter 12 – Fire in Sterling Manor

Chapter 12 – Fire in Sterling Manor
The office door slammed shut with a thunderous bang.
Emma spun toward it, throwing her shoulder against the heavy oak.
It didn't move.
The old brass lock had engaged automatically.
Beside her, Lily shrank into the corner, covering her ears as Isabella's voice echoed from the hidden speaker.
"Don't waste your strength, Emma."
The voice was calm.
Almost compassionate.
"That door was designed never to open from the inside."
Emma stepped back, her breathing uneven.
"What do you want?"
A brief silence.
Then Isabella answered.
"The truth."
Emma laughed bitterly.
"You've spent years burying it."
"No."
Isabella's voice softened.
"I've spent years protecting it."
Above them, William Sterling hurried through the underground corridors with only the flashlight on his phone to guide him.
The hidden passages twisted in impossible directions.
Every turn looked identical.
Every wall seemed older than the last.
Then...
He heard a child crying.
"Ethan!"
William ran toward the sound.
The crying grew louder.
"Dad..."
His heart leaped.
"I'm coming!"
He rounded the corner—
—and found nothing.
Only an empty stone corridor.
The crying stopped instantly.
William stared into the darkness.
His voice echoed back to him.
"Dad..."
Except...
He hadn't spoken.
The tunnels had.
Elsewhere in the maze, Marcus Hale stood alone before a bank of security monitors.
Dozens of camera feeds flickered across the screens.
Emma.
William.
Lily.
Construction crews.
Every movement beneath Sterling Manor was being tracked.
Marcus removed the earpiece connecting him to Isabella.
For the first time in years...
He switched it off.
Silence.
He looked at Ethan's camera feed.
The boy sat handcuffed to a chair inside a circular room.
His face was pale.
Exhausted.
Marcus whispered,
"I'm sorry."
Then he made a decision.
He pulled a small emergency key from his pocket.
One Isabella had never known he possessed.
Inside the locked office...
Emma carefully unfolded the letters from Sarah Morgan.
Most had faded with time.
Some were stained by water.
One by one, the pieces began fitting together.
Sarah Morgan had married Richard Sterling.
Years before William was born.
She was pregnant.
But according to the official Sterling family history...
Richard's wife had always been Eleanor Sterling.
There was no Sarah.
No Morgan family.
No mention of another marriage.
Someone had erased her completely.
Emma looked at Lily.
"They rewrote history."
Lily frowned.
"Can people do that?"
Emma glanced toward the ceiling.
"If they're powerful enough..."
She whispered,
"...yes."
A shrill alarm suddenly echoed throughout the underground complex.
Red emergency lights began flashing.
The hidden speaker crackled.
Not Isabella.
A computerized voice.
WARNING.
FIRE DETECTED.
Emma's eyes widened.
Smoke drifted beneath the office door.
Upstairs...
The first flames appeared inside Sterling Manor's west wing.
A curtain ignited.
Seconds later...
A chandelier crashed into the ballroom.
Crystal shattered across the marble floor.
Servants screamed.
Guests from the overnight charity committee rushed toward the exits.
Within moments, smoke filled the mansion.
Outside, gardeners shouted as flames climbed the historic walls.
Standing calmly in the front courtyard...
Isabella watched.
She wasn't running.
She wasn't panicking.
She simply observed the fire spreading across the estate.
Marcus hurried toward her.
"The west wing is burning."
"I know."
"We have to evacuate."
She smiled faintly.
"We already have."
Marcus looked confused.
"What about the evidence?"
Isabella turned toward the blazing mansion.
"Fire is a wonderful editor."
Deep below...
Emma wrapped a damp cloth around Lily's mouth.
"We're leaving."
The office door remained locked.
Smoke thickened by the second.
Emma searched desperately.
Bookshelves.
Desk.
Fireplace.
Nothing.
Then...
She noticed the old grandfather clock against the far wall.
Its hands pointed to...
7:17.
Every one of Ethan's drawings.
Every clock.
Always the same time.
Emma approached carefully.
She moved the minute hand.
Nothing.
She moved the hour hand.
Still nothing.
Then she turned both together until they aligned perfectly with 7:17.
A loud click echoed behind the clock.
Part of the wall slid open.
A hidden passage.
Lily smiled weakly.
"Ethan knew."
Emma took Lily's hand.
Together they disappeared into the narrow tunnel just as flames burst through the office doorway behind them.
The secret passage climbed sharply upward.
Fresh air flowed through it.
Hope.
For the first time in hours...
Hope.
Meanwhile...
William reached another underground chamber.
His phone flashlight illuminated a familiar object lying on the floor.
A silver bracelet.
Engraved.
O.B.
He picked it up.
"What is this?"
A voice answered from the darkness.
"It belonged to my mother."
William froze.
A woman stepped into the light.
She looked to be in her early forties.
Thin.
Exhausted.
But alive.
William stared.
"No..."
The woman met his eyes.
"You don't recognize me."
"I..."
"You were six years old the last time we met."
William struggled to breathe.
"Who are you?"
She smiled sadly.
"My name is Olivia Bennett."
William remembered the name instantly.
His childhood nanny.
The woman everyone had claimed left for Europe.
"You..."
His voice cracked.
"...you're dead."
Olivia slowly shook her head.
"No."
"They wanted you to think that."
William looked around in disbelief.
"Where have you been?"
Olivia's answer was almost a whisper.
"Waiting."
"For what?"
"For someone willing to see."
The ceiling trembled violently.
Dust rained around them.
Another explosion shook Sterling Manor above.
Olivia looked upward.
"It's started."
"What has?"
"The ending."
Back in the burning mansion...
Firefighters arrived through the front gates.
Sirens echoed across the estate.
Smoke billowed into the morning sky.
Television helicopters circled overhead.
Reporters gathered outside the gates.
One shouted,
"Where's William Sterling?"
Another asked,
"Was anyone trapped inside?"
Isabella stood before the cameras.
Tears filled her eyes.
"My husband..."
She struggled to speak.
"...went back inside to save our son."
The reporters gasped.
Firefighters immediately rushed toward the mansion.
Perfect.
Exactly as Isabella intended.
Everyone now believed William and Ethan were somewhere inside the burning house.
No one would think to search beneath it.
Far below the flames...
Marcus reached the circular chamber where Ethan was imprisoned.
He inserted the emergency key.
The heavy steel lock released.
Ethan looked up.
"Marcus?"
The older man's hands trembled.
"I'm getting you out."
"Why?"
Marcus looked into the frightened boy's eyes.
"Because your mother once saved my life."
Ethan frowned.
"My mom is dead."
Marcus swallowed hard.
He slowly shook his head.
"No, Ethan."
His voice broke.
"That's the biggest lie you've ever been told."
Before Ethan could ask another question, every light in the chamber suddenly went out.
A low mechanical rumble echoed beneath the earth.
The Heart had begun to move.
Somewhere deep inside the ancient machinery, massive gears turned for the first time in decades.
Then Isabella's voice echoed through every tunnel.
Cold.
Commanding.
Final.
"Seal Level H."
One by one, colossal steel barriers began crashing into place.

The underground maze wasn't just burning above.
It was locking itself forever below.
