Chapter 1 – The Baby They Wanted Gone

THE HEIRESS THEY TRIED TO ERASE
Chapter 1 – The Baby They Wanted Gone
The first thing I felt was not fear.
It was betrayal.
Because fear would have been easier.
Fear was something you could fight.
Fear was something you could survive.
But betrayal...
Betrayal came from the person whose hand you once trusted to hold yours when the world turned against you.
And on that day, standing in the middle of a courtroom with my unborn child inside me, I finally understood something terrible:
The people closest to you are sometimes the ones who know exactly where to hurt you.
My name is Clara Whitmore.
Eight months pregnant.
Twenty-eight years old.
And for the first time in my life, I was standing in front of a judge fighting for something that should have never been questioned.
My right to protect my child.
The courtroom was packed.
Reporters filled the back rows.
Lawyers whispered behind expensive folders.
Every seat was occupied by people who had come to watch the downfall of the Blackwood family.
A family that had spent decades building an empire.
A family that believed money could bury any secret.
At the center of it all stood my husband.
Adrian Blackwood.
Billionaire.
CEO.
The man whose name appeared on magazine covers.
The man strangers admired.
The man I once believed was my greatest blessing.
He stood beside his attorneys wearing a perfectly tailored charcoal suit.
Not a wrinkle.
Not a sign of stress.
He looked calm.
Almost bored.
I stared at him from across the courtroom.
Waiting.
Hoping.
Maybe foolishly.
I kept thinking:
He will look at me.
He will remember I am his wife.
He will remember our baby.
But Adrian never looked at my face.
Not once.
Instead, his attention remained on the woman sitting beside him.
Vanessa Laurent.
His mistress.
She looked exactly like the kind of woman the world expected Adrian Blackwood to choose.
Elegant.
Beautiful.
Confident.
Her cream-colored suit was flawless.
Her blonde hair fell perfectly over her shoulders.
She looked like she belonged beside him.
And maybe that was the part that hurt the most.
Not that she was there.
But that Adrian looked comfortable with her there.
Three months earlier, I had discovered their affair.
Three months earlier, my entire world had shattered.
I had found messages.
Photographs.
Hotel reservations.
Conversations that proved my husband had been living two separate lives.
When I confronted him, I expected anger.
Denial.
An explanation.
Something.
Instead, he had simply looked at me and said:
"Clara, you don't understand the situation."
That sentence stayed with me.
Because it was not an apology.
It was not regret.
It was a warning.
A week later, Adrian filed legal documents claiming I was mentally unstable and attempting to manipulate him for money.
Me.
The woman carrying his child.
The court case began as a custody dispute.
At least, that was what everyone thought.
But the truth was much darker.
Because Adrian wasn't fighting for custody.
He was fighting for control.
Control over my child.
Control over my future.
Control over something he believed belonged to him.
The judge entered the courtroom.
Everyone stood.
Judge Eleanor Hayes was known for being strict.
Fair.
Impossible to manipulate.
She took her seat and looked through the documents.
Then she looked at me.
Something changed in her expression.
A small pause.
A moment of confusion.
But she said nothing.
The hearing began.
"My client believes Mrs. Whitmore is attempting to use her pregnancy as leverage," Adrian's attorney said.
I stared at him.
Leverage?
That word almost made me laugh.
"My client has significant concerns regarding Mrs. Whitmore's emotional stability," the attorney continued.
I gripped the edge of the table.
"She has repeatedly threatened to damage Mr. Blackwood's reputation."
That was a lie.
A complete lie.
I had begged Adrian privately.
I had asked him to end the affair.
I had asked him to protect our family.
But now, in this courtroom, my pain had become evidence against me.
Then Vanessa stood.
The judge looked surprised.
"Ms. Laurent, you are not a party in this case."
"I understand, Your Honor."
Vanessa smiled softly.
"But I believe I can provide important context."
Of course she could.
She walked toward the witness area.
Every step was deliberate.
Every movement calculated.
She looked at me.
Then at my stomach.
And smiled.
"I only want what is best for Adrian."
My hands tightened.
Not me.
Not the baby.
Adrian.
The judge asked:
"And what exactly do you believe is best for Mr. Blackwood?"
Vanessa looked directly at me.
"Freedom."
The word hit harder than I expected.
Freedom from me.
Freedom from my child.
Freedom from responsibility.
I looked at Adrian.
Waiting for him to stop her.
He didn't.
That was when something inside me broke.
Not my heart.
Something stronger.
The last piece of hope I had been holding onto.
"Your Honor," I said quietly.
"I would like to speak."
The judge nodded.
"Proceed."
I stood slowly.
My pregnancy made every movement difficult.
But I stood.
"I never wanted his money."
My voice echoed through the courtroom.
"I never wanted his company."
I looked at Adrian.
"I wanted my husband."
For the first time, Adrian looked at me.
But there was no love there.
Only irritation.
"Clara," he said coldly, "don't make this dramatic."
Dramatic.
I almost couldn't believe it.
Eight months pregnant.
My marriage destroyed.
My child's future being discussed like a business deal.
And I was dramatic?
Then Vanessa moved.
At first, I didn't understand what was happening.
She stepped away from her attorney.
Walked toward me.
"Vanessa?"
The judge's voice sharpened.
"Return to your position."
But Vanessa kept walking.
She stopped directly in front of me.
And whispered:
"You should have disappeared when you had the chance."
My blood ran cold.
"What?"
Her expression changed.
The sweetness disappeared.
The mask fell.
"You have no idea what you stole from us."
I stepped back.
"What are you talking about?"
Then she pushed me.
Not hard enough for anyone to notice immediately.
Just enough.
I lost my balance.
But before I could fall...
Her foot came forward.
A sharp impact.
A burst of pain.
She kicked my stomach.
The courtroom exploded.
Gasps.
Shouts.
Chairs moving.
I couldn't breathe.
My body reacted before my mind did.
I wrapped both arms around my stomach.
Protecting my baby.
"No..."
The word came out as a whisper.
Pain ripped through me.
A pain I had never known.
I fell against the witness stand.
And the person who should have run to me...
Did not move.
Adrian remained standing beside his lawyers.
Watching.
Then he said the words I would never forget.
"She's pretending again."
The courtroom went silent.
Vanessa adjusted her suit.
"She'll do anything to keep his money."
I stared at my husband.
My husband.
The father of my child.
And I realized...
The person standing across from me was not the man I married.
Then I felt it.
Warmth.
At first, I thought it was tears.
Then I looked down.
Blood.
A dark stain spreading across my dress.
The judge stood immediately.
Her face changed.
Not anger.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
She looked at me.
At my face.
At my name on the documents.
Then she whispered:
"No..."
Everyone froze.
The judge stepped down from the bench.
"Lock every door."
The courtroom erupted.
"Your Honor?"
"Nobody leaves."
Her voice shook.
For the first time, Judge Eleanor Hayes did not look like a powerful woman in control.
She looked like someone who had just seen a ghost.
She knelt beside me.
"Listen to me."
Her voice became gentle.
"What was your mother's name?"
I struggled to answer.
"My mother?"
"Your biological mother."
My heart stopped.
I didn't understand.
"My mother's name was..."
I swallowed.
"Elizabeth Whitmore."
The judge went completely still.
Twenty-eight years of memories crossed her face.
A sealed adoption.
A missing newborn.
Forged hospital records.
A child who vanished.
A child who was never supposed to be found.
The judge slowly stood.
And when she spoke again...
Her voice carried through the entire courtroom.
"Bring me the original adoption file."
Adrian's expression changed.
For the first time that day...
He looked afraid.
Because he knew.
The secret his family had buried for twenty-eight years...
Was finally coming back.
