Chapter 5 – The Woman Who Stole a Baby

THE HEIRESS THEY TRIED TO ERASE
Chapter 5 – The Woman Who Stole a Baby
The photograph was only a piece of paper.
A faded image.
A moment frozen twenty-eight years ago.
But to me, it felt heavier than anything I had ever held.
Because inside that photograph was my entire life.
I stared at the woman standing beside the nurse.
Victoria Blackwood.
My husband's mother.
The woman who had sat across from me in my hospital room and warned me not to "destroy" her family.
She knew.
She had always known.
My fingers trembled as I held the photograph.
"Are you sure?"
I asked Judge Hayes.
She looked at the image carefully.
Then at me.
"I never forget a face."
Her voice was firm.
"Especially not one connected to a child who disappeared."
The next few hours felt unreal.
The hospital room became a place where my past and present collided.
My unborn child was sleeping peacefully inside me.
Completely unaware that before they were even born, powerful people had already decided their future.
I placed my hand over my stomach.
For months, I had worried about becoming a mother.
Was I ready?
Would I be good enough?
Could I protect my baby?
Now I knew the answer.
I had to.
Because someone had once failed to protect me.
Judge Hayes opened another folder.
"Clara, there is something you need to see."
I looked at her.
"What else could there possibly be?"
She removed several documents.
Hospital records.
Police reports.
Legal forms.
"The adoption file was sealed because the case was considered private."
She paused.
"But after what happened in court, I requested access under emergency authority."
My eyes moved across the papers.
Then I saw the date.
The day I was born.
Saint Catherine's Medical Center.
My mother's name.
Elizabeth Whitmore.
Everything looked normal.
Until I reached the final pages.
The signatures.
The consent forms.
"This signature..."
I whispered.
Judge Hayes nodded.
"Is fake."
My chest tightened.
"So my mother never signed?"
"No."
"She never agreed to adoption?"
"No."
The room felt colder.
A baby was not taken with violence.
Not with a kidnapping that people could immediately see.
I was taken with ink.
With paperwork.
With lies.
"How did they do it?"
I asked.
Judge Hayes looked down.
"Your mother was told you had complications after birth."
I froze.
"What?"
"They separated you from her."
My eyes filled.
"Why?"
"Because Victoria Blackwood had connections inside the hospital."
The words were difficult to hear.
A nurse.
A businessman.
A powerful family.
They had turned a place meant for healing into a place where a mother lost her child.
"My mother..."
My voice broke.
"Did she look for me?"
Judge Hayes became quiet.
That silence hurt.
"Yes."
A tear slipped down my cheek.
"How long?"
"Years."
I covered my mouth.
My whole life, I thought I was unwanted.
But my mother had been searching.
She had been fighting.
She had loved me.
"Then why didn't she find me?"
Judge Hayes looked away.
"Because the Blackwoods were careful."
The Blackwoods.
That name no longer sounded like a family.
It sounded like a warning.
Meanwhile, across the city...
Adrian Blackwood watched the news coverage from his office.
For the first time in his life, he looked powerless.
The headlines were everywhere.
"BLACKWOOD FAMILY LINKED TO HISTORICAL ADOPTION SCANDAL."
"BILLIONAIRE HEIR ACCUSED OF HIDING WIFE'S TRUE IDENTITY."
His assistant stood silently.
"Sir..."
Adrian didn't answer.
He stared at the television.
At Clara.
At the woman he had convinced himself he loved.
At the woman he had betrayed.
"Did she really know?"
his assistant asked carefully.
Adrian turned.
"Know what?"
"That she was an heiress?"
Adrian said nothing.
Because the answer was complicated.
He had known.
But he had never allowed himself to admit what that meant.
He told himself he loved Clara.
And maybe part of him did.
But another part...
The darker part...
Had seen her as an opportunity.
His phone rang.
Victoria.
He answered immediately.
"What did you do?"
Her voice was calm.
"Excuse me?"
"You went to the hospital."
A pause.
"How do you know that?"
"Because she told the judge about the bracelet."
Silence.
Then Victoria sighed.
"You always were too emotional."
Adrian's expression hardened.
"Did you steal her?"
The question hung between them.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then Victoria said:
"I saved this family."
Adrian froze.
"No."
His voice lowered.
"You destroyed someone else's."
For the first time, Adrian realized something.
His mother had never considered Clara a person.
Only a problem.
Only an obstacle.
Only a piece in a game.
Back at the hospital, Judge Hayes received a call.
Her expression changed.
"Who was it?"
I asked.
She looked at me.
"The police."
My heart raced.
"Why?"
"They found another witness."
A witness.
After twenty-eight years.
Someone who knew what happened.
"Who?"
Judge Hayes hesitated.
"The nurse from the photograph."
My breath caught.
"The woman who carried me away?"
She nodded.
"Yes."
"Where is she?"
Judge Hayes looked at the floor.
"She disappeared shortly after the photograph was taken."
A pause.
"But today..."
She looked at me.
"She contacted us."
My heartbeat increased.
"Why now?"
Judge Hayes's expression became serious.
"Because she said she has been afraid for twenty-eight years."
The door opened.
A police officer entered.
Behind him was an elderly woman.
Her hair was gray.
Her hands shook.
But her eyes...
Her eyes were full of regret.
She looked at me.
And immediately began crying.
"Oh my God..."
I couldn't move.
The woman stepped closer.
"I never forgot you."
My voice was barely audible.
"Who are you?"
She pressed a hand to her chest.
"My name is Margaret Collins."
A tear fell down her face.
"I was the nurse who held you the night you were born."
The room went silent.
Then she whispered the words I had waited my entire life to hear.
"Your mother didn't abandon you."
I closed my eyes.
"She fought for you."
Another tear fell.
"And I failed her."
I looked at her.
"What happened?"
Margaret looked toward Judge Hayes.
Then back at me.
"The truth is worse than you know."
She took a shaking breath.
"Because Victoria Blackwood didn't just steal you."
My heart stopped.
"She paid me to help her."
The room froze.
Twenty-eight years.
A stolen child.
A forged adoption.
A family built on lies.
And now...
The first person who could prove everything had finally spoken.
But before Margaret could continue...
My hospital room door opened.
And the person standing outside made everyone turn.
Adrian.
His face was pale.
Because he had heard the last sentence.
"Victoria Blackwood paid me to steal your child."
Adrian looked at his mother.
Then at me.
And for the first time...
He looked truly terrified.
