Chapter 3 – The Husband Who Bought My Love

THE HEIRESS THEY TRIED TO ERASE

Chapter 3 – The Husband Who Bought My Love

The hardest truths are not the ones that hurt.

They are the ones that make every beautiful memory feel like a lie.

Adrian stood at the foot of my hospital bed.

The man I had loved.

The man I had defended.

The man I had chosen over everyone else.

And for the first time, I looked at him and wondered:

Did I ever know you at all?

"How long did you know?"

My voice was quiet.

But it carried more anger than a scream.

Adrian looked away.

That was when I knew.

Not because he admitted it.

Because he couldn't look at me.

"Clara..."

"No."

I interrupted.

"Don't say my name like that."

His expression changed.

"Like what?"

"Like you still have the right to comfort me."

The words hurt him.

I saw it.

But for once, I didn't care.

Because I had spent months caring about everyone's pain except my own.

"I asked you a question."

Silence.

Then Adrian finally answered.

"Before we met."

The room became painfully quiet.

I felt my heartbeat in my ears.

"Before we met?"

I repeated.

He nodded.

"Yes."

I laughed.

But there was no humor in it.

"How much before?"

His eyes lowered.

"Two years."

Two years.

Two years before he walked into my life.

Two years before he smiled at me in that coffee shop.

Two years before he told me I was different from everyone else.

He already knew.

I remembered the day I met Adrian.

I was twenty-six.

Working two jobs.

Living in a small apartment.

Trying to pay off student loans.

I had never cared about money.

I had never dreamed of luxury.

Then he appeared.

A man who seemed impossible.

Confident.

Successful.

Kind.

At least, I thought he was kind.

He noticed small things.

The way I took my coffee.

The books I carried.

The songs I listened to.

He made me feel seen.

That was what I loved most.

Not his money.

Not his name.

Not the expensive gifts.

The feeling that someone finally understood me.

But now...

I wondered.

Had he studied me?

Had every detail been collected?

Was I a person to him?

Or a problem to solve?

"Why?"

I asked.

Adrian looked confused.

"Why what?"

"Why did you marry me?"

His face tightened.

"Clara—"

"Answer me."

A long pause.

"I loved you."

The answer should have made me feel better.

It didn't.

Because I no longer knew whether it was true.

"You knew about the trust."

He didn't respond.

"You knew my child would inherit everything."

His silence became unbearable.

"You knew before you ever touched my hand."

Adrian finally sat down.

"At first..."

He stopped.

At first.

Those two words told me everything.

"At first what?"

He rubbed his face.

"At first, I was asked to find you."

My stomach turned.

"Asked by who?"

He hesitated.

"My father."

The room felt frozen.

Thomas Blackwood.

The man who had built the empire.

The man whose family name appeared everywhere.

The man who had stolen my identity.

"He knew I existed?"

Adrian nodded.

"Yes."

"How?"

"Your mother tried to expose him."

My breath caught.

"She knew?"

"She found documents. She discovered what happened."

Adrian looked miserable.

"She was trying to find you."

For a moment, I couldn't speak.

My mother had spent years searching for me.

And I had spent years believing she didn't want me.

"What happened to her?"

Adrian's eyes darkened.

"She disappeared."

The word was careful.

Too careful.

"Disappeared?"

"That's what I was told."

I stared at him.

"You don't know?"

He looked away.

And again...

That silence.

That terrible silence.

"You knew enough to marry me."

My voice broke.

"You knew enough to build a life with me."

I touched my stomach.

"You knew enough to have a child with me."

A tear escaped before I could stop it.

"And you never thought I deserved the truth?"

Adrian closed his eyes.

"I was supposed to tell you."

"But you didn't."

"No."

"Why?"

His answer was barely a whisper.

"Because I was afraid."

I stared at him.

Afraid.

The word almost made me angry.

"Afraid of what?"

"Losing everything."

There it was.

The truth.

Not love.

Not protection.

Fear.

"Your father promised you something."

I said.

Adrian looked at me.

"He told you that if you controlled the inheritance, you would take over the company."

His silence confirmed it.

"He made you choose."

Adrian's face changed.

"Clara..."

"No."

I shook my head.

"I understand now."

I looked at him.

"You weren't looking for a wife."

A pause.

"You were looking for a key."

Adrian stood.

"That isn't fair."

I almost smiled.

"Fair?"

I looked at the man who had everything.

"Do you know what isn't fair?"

My voice shook.

"Being born and having your identity stolen."

"Being raised believing your mother abandoned you."

"Falling in love with a man who already knew the truth."

I pointed toward the door.

"You don't get to talk to me about fair."

For the first time, Adrian looked broken.

Not angry.

Not arrogant.

Broken.

"I did love you."

I looked away.

"Maybe."

A tear rolled down his face.

"But you loved me after you knew what I was worth."

He left without another word.

That night, I couldn't sleep.

I kept thinking about our wedding.

The day Adrian promised:

"I choose you."

But now I wondered.

Had he chosen me?

Or had he chosen what came with me?

The next morning, Judge Hayes returned.

She brought a folder.

"I found something."

I looked at her.

"What?"

She placed the folder on the bed.

"Your husband's financial records from before your marriage."

My hands trembled.

Inside were documents.

Emails.

Bank transfers.

And one name appeared repeatedly.

Adrian Blackwood.

The documents showed payments made to private investigators.

Searching for me.

Tracking my life.

Watching me.

"He was investigating me."

I whispered.

Judge Hayes nodded.

"Yes."

"Before he met me."

"Yes."

I turned the page.

And then I saw something that made my blood run cold.

A handwritten note.

Not from Adrian.

From his father.

The message was short.

"Marry her before she discovers who she is. The child will secure everything."

I stopped breathing.

The room blurred.

My husband hadn't just hidden the truth.

He had followed a plan.

A plan created before I ever knew his name.

At that moment, I made a promise.

Not to Adrian.

Not to the Blackwood family.

To myself.

They had spent twenty-eight years trying to erase me.

They failed.

Because I was still here.

And now...

I knew the truth.

The woman they thought they could control was finally awake.
