Chapter 6 – The Billionaire’s Perfect Lie

THE HEIRESS THEY TRIED TO ERASE

Chapter 6 – The Billionaire’s Perfect Lie

Adrian stood in the doorway.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Not the police officer.

Not Judge Hayes.

Not Margaret Collins.

Not even me.

Because the man standing there was no longer just my husband.

He was the final piece of the puzzle.

For months, I had wondered how much Adrian knew.

How deep his involvement went.

Whether he was simply a coward who followed his family's orders...

Or something worse.

Now I finally had my answer.

His face had lost all the confidence he carried everywhere.

The confidence of a man who believed money could solve anything.

But money couldn't fix this.

Because some truths did not need lawyers.

They needed witnesses.

Margaret looked at him.

Her hands began shaking.

"Adrian..."

The way she said his name told me everything.

She knew him.

Not as a billionaire.

Not as a businessman.

As the child of the family that destroyed my life.

Adrian stepped into the room.

"Why are you here?"

Judge Hayes asked coldly.

He looked at me.

"I need to talk to Clara."

I almost laughed.

"Now?"

His eyes filled with guilt.

"Please."

The word sounded strange coming from him.

Adrian Blackwood.

The man who had never begged anyone for anything.

Now he was begging me.

But I was tired of hearing apologies after damage was done.

"You had years to talk."

My voice was quiet.

"You had years to tell me the truth."

He looked down.

"I know."

"No."

I shook my head.

"You don't know."

I touched my stomach.

"You knew who I was before I knew who I was."

The room became silent.

"You watched me build a life."

My voice trembled.

"You watched me love you."

A tear escaped.

"And every day, you knew your family had stolen me."

Adrian closed his eyes.

"I was wrong."

Those words.

They should have meant something.

But they came too late.

Judge Hayes stepped forward.

"Mr. Blackwood, before you say anything else, I need an answer."

Adrian looked at her.

"Did you know about the adoption?"

A long pause.

Then:

"Yes."

The answer broke something inside me.

Not because I didn't expect it.

Because hearing him admit it made it real.

Margaret covered her mouth.

"You knew?"

Adrian looked at her.

"You knew too."

The elderly nurse looked away.

Shame crossed her face.

"I was young."

"No."

Adrian's voice was sharper.

"You were scared."

The room fell silent.

Because everyone understood.

Fear had been the weapon the Blackwoods used for decades.

Fear.

Money.

Power.

Adrian sat down.

"I need to explain."

I looked at him.

"Then explain."

For the first time, he didn't try to defend himself.

He told the truth.

Two years before he met me, Adrian had discovered something.

His father, Thomas Blackwood, had kept hidden files.

Private records.

Documents no one in the family was supposed to see.

One night, Adrian found them.

Inside was information about me.

Clara Whitmore.

The missing granddaughter of Thomas Whitmore.

The girl connected to a billion-dollar trust.

"I was twenty-nine."

Adrian said.

"I thought I had found something that would change my life."

I stared at him.

"And it did."

He nodded.

"Yes."

His father had given him a choice.

Find Clara.

Gain her trust.

Marry her.

Then, when the child was born...

Control the inheritance.

"And you agreed."

I whispered.

Adrian looked destroyed.

"At first."

That phrase again.

At first.

"I thought I could do it."

He looked at me.

"I thought I could separate the plan from my feelings."

I almost smiled.

"You thought you could use me and still love me."

He didn't answer.

Because that was exactly what he had done.

"I didn't expect to love you."

The words hung in the air.

"But you did."

"Yes."

"And then?"

Adrian looked away.

"Then I became a coward."

A bitter laugh escaped me.

"A coward?"

I wiped my tears.

"You weren't just a coward."

"You were my husband."

He nodded.

"I know."

"No."

I said again.

"You don't."

Because a stranger hurting me would have been painful.

But my husband?

That was different.

My husband knew exactly where my heart was.

And he used that knowledge against me.

Judge Hayes placed another document on the table.

"Mr. Blackwood, there is still one question."

Adrian looked at her.

"Did you know Vanessa was involved?"

His face changed.

A small reaction.

But I saw it.

"What?"

I whispered.

Adrian remained silent.

"Adrian."

Judge Hayes demanded.

"Answer."

He swallowed.

"Yes."

My heart sank.

"She knew?"

Adrian nodded.

"She found out after my father died."

The room became colder.

Vanessa.

The woman who kicked me.

The woman who accused me of chasing money.

She knew exactly what I was.

"Then why marry her?"

I asked.

Adrian looked at me.

"I didn't."

"Then why was she beside you?"

He had no answer.

Because the answer was obvious.

He allowed her.

The door suddenly opened.

A lawyer entered quickly.

"Mr. Blackwood."

Everyone turned.

The lawyer looked nervous.

"We have a problem."

Adrian stood.

"What?"

The lawyer glanced at me.

Then Judge Hayes.

"Someone accessed the trust documents."

My blood ran cold.

"What does that mean?"

Judge Hayes stepped closer.

"It means someone is trying to change the beneficiary records."

My hand moved protectively over my stomach.

"But that's impossible."

Judge Hayes looked serious.

"Normally, yes."

"Normally?"

She took a breath.

"Unless someone has access to the original legal authorization."

A horrible thought entered my mind.

"The Blackwoods."

Judge Hayes didn't deny it.

Then Margaret spoke.

Her voice was barely above a whisper.

"There is something else."

Everyone looked at her.

"I remember the night Clara was taken."

My heart raced.

"What?"

She looked at me.

"Victoria did not act alone."

The room froze.

"Who helped her?"

Judge Hayes asked.

Margaret's eyes moved slowly toward Adrian.

And Adrian immediately stepped back.

"No."

His voice cracked.

"No, she can't mean..."

Margaret began crying.

"Your father was there."

Silence.

Thomas Blackwood.

The man who started everything.

The man who built the empire.

The man who was supposed to be dead and gone.

But then Margaret said the words that changed everything.

"I saw him leave the hospital."

A pause.

"And he was carrying the original adoption file."

I looked at Adrian.

The color drained from his face.

Because suddenly, the truth was clear.

His father hadn't just known.

He had planned everything.

And Adrian...

Had spent his entire life protecting the legacy of a crime.

That night, as I lay awake in the hospital, one thought kept repeating:

My husband didn't just lie to me.

He inherited a lie.

And then he chose to continue it.

But tomorrow, the world would learn the truth.

Because Judge Hayes had reopened the original case.

And when the court records became public...

The Blackwood empire would begin to collapse.
