CHAPTER 12 — THE LAST BETRAYAL

CHAPTER 12 — THE LAST BETRAYAL

The room fell silent.

Elena stood beneath the emergency lights.

Her gray hair was soaked from the rain.

Her face was pale.

But her hand was steady.

The small metal device in her palm glowed faintly blue.

The master key.

Marcus stared at it.

For the first time since Lily had known him—

he looked afraid.

"You shouldn't have come."

Elena looked at him.

"You shouldn't have survived."

Marcus smiled.

"Neither should you."

Michael stepped forward.

"Mom."

Elena looked at him.

For a moment, the cold woman disappeared.

She looked like the mother he remembered.

The woman who had held his hand.

The woman who had tucked him into bed.

The woman who had cried at his funeral.

But Michael knew now.

Some of those memories were lies.

"Are you really my mother?"

Elena's eyes filled with tears.

"Yes."

"Or is that another memory?"

She shook her head.

"I'm your mother."

Michael's voice became colder.

"Then tell me the truth."

Elena looked at Lily.

Then Serena.

Then Marcus.

"I will."

Marcus laughed.

"No."

Elena raised the master key.

The machines around them began to power down.

Marcus immediately moved.

"Don't."

Elena pressed the device.

The entire laboratory shook.

Lights exploded.

Screens went black.

Somewhere deep beneath the facility, enormous machinery began shutting down.

Marcus lunged toward her.

Michael intercepted him.

The two men collided.

Marcus struck Michael across the face.

Michael fell.

Lily screamed.

"Michael!"

Marcus reached for Elena.

But Serena stepped between them.

She raised her gun.

"One more step."

Marcus stopped.

"You."

Serena's hands were shaking.

"But you're still standing."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because Lily remembered me."

Marcus smiled.

"That won't save you."

Serena aimed directly at his heart.

"Maybe not."

She cocked the weapon.

"But it might save them."

Marcus stared at her.

Then slowly smiled.

"You still don't understand."

"What?"

"You were never my creation."

Serena frowned.

Marcus looked at Elena.

"Tell her."

Elena closed her eyes.

"Marcus is right."

Serena froze.

"About what?"

Elena whispered:

"You were mine."

Serena lowered her weapon.

"What?"

Elena looked at her.

"I created you."

"No."

"Not biologically."

Elena stepped forward.

"But I created your memories."

Serena's face drained of color.

"Why?"

"Because I needed someone I could trust."

Serena stared.

"You used me."

"Yes."

"You made me believe Marcus killed my parents."

"I made you believe many things."

"Why?"

"Because I couldn't fight him alone."

Serena's eyes filled with tears.

"So my whole life..."

"Was built around a lie."

Elena nodded.

"Yes."

Serena looked at Lily.

Then Michael.

Then back at Elena.

"You all lied."

Elena's voice cracked.

"I was trying to protect you."

"Everyone says that."

Serena laughed bitterly.

"Everyone uses that word."

"Protect."

"Protect."

"Protect."

She raised her gun again.

"But all anyone ever did was destroy us."

Elena nodded.

"I know."

"Do you?"

"Yes."

"Then why?"

Elena looked at Marcus.

"Because he was always one step ahead."

Marcus smiled.

"Don't blame me for your choices."

Elena turned toward him.

"You were the reason I made them."

"No."

Marcus shook his head.

"You made the first choice."

Elena froze.

Marcus stepped closer.

"You chose Lily."

"You chose Michael."

"You chose Victor."

"You chose Serena."

"And every time you chose one child..."

He smiled.

"...another one died."

Elena closed her eyes.

The accusation hit harder than any weapon.

Michael stood again.

Blood ran from his lip.

He looked at Marcus.

"Why did you make me kill Victor?"

Marcus stared.

"You already know."

"I want you to say it."

Marcus smiled.

"Victor was becoming dangerous."

"He wanted to expose Project Mirror."

"He wanted to destroy everything."

Michael's voice hardened.

"So you used me."

"Yes."

"You made me believe I was him."

"Yes."

"You took my childhood."

"Yes."

"You took Lily."

Marcus's expression became cold.

"I gave you purpose."

Michael stepped closer.

"You gave me a prison."

Marcus laughed.

"And yet you escaped."

"Because Lily saved me."

Marcus looked at Lily.

"She always did."

Michael raised his gun.

"You're afraid of her."

Marcus shook his head.

"I'm afraid of what she remembers."

Lily stepped forward.

"Then you're afraid of me."

Marcus looked at her.

"More than you know."

The facility shook again.

A warning alarm sounded.

CORE DESTRUCTION: 08 MINUTES.

Michael looked at the display.

"We need to leave."

Elena shook her head.

"No."

Michael stared.

"Mom?"

"The core has to be destroyed."

"We can do that from outside."

"No."

Elena looked at the master key.

"If I remove it now, the system will restart."

"And Marcus will survive."

Marcus smiled.

"She's right."

Michael looked at him.

"You knew."

Marcus nodded.

"Of course."

"Then why aren't you running?"

Marcus smiled.

"Because this isn't my only facility."

Lily's eyes narrowed.

"How many?"

Marcus didn't answer.

Serena whispered:

"How many?"

Marcus finally looked at her.

"Seven."

Lily's heart sank.

"Seven Project Mirror facilities?"

"No."

Marcus smiled.

"Seven generations."

Michael stared.

"You're saying..."

"Project Mirror was the seventh version."

"What's the first?"

Marcus looked at Elena.

"Ask your mother."

All eyes turned toward Elena.

She looked exhausted.

"The first project was called Eden."

Silence.

"What was Eden?"

Elena looked at Lily.

"Memory creation."

"Not memory transfer."

"Creation."

Lily frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Elena answered:

"They tried to create a human mind from stored memories."

Michael's face hardened.

"And did they succeed?"

Elena nodded.

"Once."

Marcus smiled.

"Twice."

Elena looked at him.

"No."

Marcus's smile widened.

"You forgot."

Suddenly—

a monitor flickered on.

A child's face appeared.

A boy.

About fourteen.

Pale.

Silent.

Lily stared.

"Who is that?"

Marcus looked at the screen.

"Your brother."

Michael froze.

"No."

Marcus smiled.

"Not you."

The boy on the screen looked directly into the camera.

Then spoke.

"Lily."

Her heart stopped.

She knew the voice.

It was Victor.

Not Michael's memory of Victor.

Victor himself.

Alive.

Somewhere.

Lily stepped closer to the screen.

"Victor?"

The boy nodded.

"Help me."

Michael stared.

"That's impossible."

Marcus laughed.

"Is it?"

Lily looked at Marcus.

"Where is he?"

"Somewhere you can't reach."

"Where?"

Marcus leaned closer.

"The original Eden facility."

Elena whispered:

"No."

Marcus smiled.

"Yes."

Elena's face went white.

"You destroyed it."

"I rebuilt it."

"Why?"

"Because Victor was the first successful transfer."

Michael stared.

"Then why did you make me replace him?"

Marcus looked at him.

"Because Victor wasn't stable."

"And you needed a second body."

Michael's face hardened.

"You used me to preserve him."

Marcus nodded.

"Exactly."

Lily stared at the screen.

Victor was still there.

Older.

Alive.

Trapped.

She whispered:

"I'll come for you."

Victor smiled.

"I knew you would."

The screen went black.

Marcus turned toward Elena.

"Now you understand."

Elena's voice was barely audible.

"You kept him."

"Of course."

"All these years."

"Yes."

"You promised me he was dead."

"I needed you to believe it."

"Why?"

Marcus smiled.

"Because you would never have stopped searching."

Elena looked at Lily.

"I should have known."

"You did."

"No."

Elena shook her head.

"I trusted you."

Marcus laughed.

"That was your mistake."

He suddenly pulled a hidden blade from his sleeve.

Serena fired.

Marcus moved.

The bullet struck his shoulder.

He stumbled.

Michael fired.

Marcus dropped behind a machine.

"Go!" Elena shouted.

They ran.

Lily grabbed Serena.

Michael followed.

The corridor began collapsing behind them.

Concrete fell.

Sparks exploded.

Fire spread along the ceiling.

They reached the elevator.

The doors opened.

Everyone rushed inside.

Elena remained behind.

Michael grabbed her hand.

"Mom!"

She shook her head.

"Go."

"No."

"I have to finish this."

Michael pulled her toward him.

"We can do it together."

Elena looked at him.

"Michael."

He stopped.

"I need you to understand something."

"What?"

"I did love you."

His eyes filled with tears.

"I know."

"I didn't always make the right choices."

"I know."

"But every choice I made..."

She looked at Lily.

"...was because I wanted you both to live."

Lily stepped closer.

"Then come with us."

Elena smiled sadly.

"I can't."

"Why?"

"Because someone has to stay."

The elevator alarm sounded.

CORE DESTRUCTION: 03 MINUTES.

Elena pushed Michael inside.

He tried to stop her.

"Mom!"

She pressed the emergency button.

The doors began closing.

Elena looked at them.

"Find Victor."

Lily nodded.

"And destroy Eden."

The doors closed.

Michael slammed his fist against them.

"No!"

The elevator began rising.

Lily held him.

He collapsed against her.

She wrapped her arms around him.

Serena watched silently.

Then she whispered:

"She knew."

Lily looked at her.

"Knew what?"

"That Marcus would follow us."

Michael looked up.

"What do you mean?"

Serena stared at the elevator controls.

"Your mother didn't stay behind to destroy the facility."

Lily frowned.

"Then why?"

Serena looked at them.

"To trap Marcus."

The elevator stopped.

The doors opened.

Marcus stood outside.

Blood covered his shoulder.

His face was calm.

Too calm.

Michael raised his gun.

Marcus looked at him.

"You can't kill me."

Michael aimed.

"Try me."

Marcus smiled.

"You still don't understand."

He pointed behind them.

The elevator doors slammed shut.

The floor dropped.

Lily screamed.

They fell.

Marcus stood alone in the corridor.

He looked at Elena.

She stood at the opposite end.

The master key was in her hand.

Marcus smiled.

"So."

"You finally decided to fight."

Elena raised the device.

"Yes."

"After fifteen years."

"Yes."

"Why now?"

"Because my children are finally free."

Marcus laughed.

"They're not free."

"They never will be."

"Not while you live."

Marcus took a step.

Elena pressed the key.

The entire facility began shaking.

Marcus's smile disappeared.

"You wouldn't."

Elena looked at him.

"Goodbye, Marcus."

The core exploded.

The elevator plunged into darkness.

Michael grabbed Lily.

Serena held onto the railing.

The display flashed:

LEVEL 13.

Lily stared.

"There is no Level Thirteen."

Michael looked at her.

"There is now."

The elevator stopped.

The doors opened.

A cold white light flooded inside.

A corridor stretched ahead.

At the end—

a glass room.

Inside stood Victor.

Alive.

Older.

His hands pressed against the glass.

Lily stepped forward.

"Victor."

He smiled.

"You're late."

Michael stared at him.

"Who are you?"

Victor looked at him.

"Your brother."

Michael's face tightened.

"I thought I was your brother."

Victor smiled.

"You are."

Lily looked between them.

"Then what are you?"

Victor answered:

"The original."

He touched the glass.

"The first Victor."

Michael stared.

"Then who am I?"

Victor smiled.

"The replacement."

Michael shook his head.

"No."

Victor looked at Lily.

"And she's the key."

Lily stepped backward.

"What?"

Victor smiled.

"Because Marcus didn't create Project Mirror."

He looked toward the ceiling.

"She did."

Lily's blood ran cold.

"What?"

Victor continued.

"Not this Lily."

"Her future."

Silence.

Michael stared at him.

"That makes no sense."

Victor's smile disappeared.

"Then you haven't remembered the final memory."

The lights turned red.

A voice echoed through the facility.

Not Marcus.

Not Elena.

Lily.

Her own voice.

From somewhere in the system.

"If you're hearing this, it means I failed."

Lily froze.

Michael looked at her.

"That's you."

The voice continued.

"Do not trust Marcus."

A pause.

Then:

"Do not trust Elena."

Another pause.

"And whatever you do..."

The lights went completely black.

"...do not let Victor leave Eden."

Lily stared into the darkness.

Because the final betrayal had just begun.

May you like

And this time—

it was coming from her.
