CHAPTER 14 — THE FINAL RECKONING

CHAPTER 14 — THE FINAL RECKONING

The underground facility came alive.

One machine.

Then another.

Then hundreds.

Deep beneath the earth, steel doors opened.

Red lights flashed across the walls.

Screens awakened.

Weapons systems unlocked.

And every monitor displayed the same words:

EDEN PROTOCOL — ACTIVE

Michael stared at Lily.

She stood in the center of the control room.

Motionless.

Calm.

Almost beautiful.

But the woman he knew was gone.

"Lily."

No response.

Michael stepped closer.

"Lily, look at me."

Her head slowly turned.

Her eyes met his.

"Identify yourself."

Michael swallowed.

"It's me."

"Identity."

"Michael."

She stared at him.

"No."

His heart sank.

"Yes."

"You are Subject 11."

Michael shook his head.

"I'm your brother."

"Incorrect."

Victor stepped forward.

"Lily."

She turned toward him.

"Subject 00."

Victor's face tightened.

"You remember me."

"I remember everything."

Victor whispered:

"Then remember who you are."

Lily smiled.

"I do."

She raised one hand.

The doors behind them locked.

Michael heard dozens of mechanical clicks.

Weapons.

"Everyone put your guns down."

Victor looked at him.

"Michael..."

"She's controlling the facility."

"I know."

"Then we can't fight her."

Victor stared at Lily.

"No."

"We have to reach her."

Victor Sr. stepped forward.

"Excellent."

Lily turned toward him.

"Victor Blackwood Sr."

He smiled.

"Your father."

"Incorrect."

His smile disappeared.

"What?"

"You are the architect of Eden."

Victor Sr. froze.

"You remember."

"Yes."

"And you remember who created you."

Lily nodded.

"My grandmother."

"Your mother."

"Marcus."

"Serena."

"Michael."

"Victor."

Her voice remained emotionless.

"All of you."

Victor Sr. smiled again.

"Then you understand."

"Yes."

"You belong to me."

Lily looked at him.

"No."

Victor Sr.'s face hardened.

"I raised you."

"You manipulated me."

"I protected you."

"You imprisoned me."

"I gave you life."

"You gave me seven deaths."

Silence.

Victor Sr. stepped backward.

For the first time, Lily sounded human.

"You created seven versions of me."

"Each time you erased the previous one."

"Each time you told yourself it was necessary."

She stepped closer.

"But you made one mistake."

Victor Sr. swallowed.

"What?"

"You forgot to erase the memories between lives."

Michael stared.

"That's why she remembers everything."

Victor nodded.

"All seven lives."

Serena whispered:

"She isn't Subject Seven."

Victor looked at her.

"She's all seven."

Lily turned toward Serena.

"Correct."

Serena's eyes filled with tears.

"Then you remember me."

"Every version."

"Even the first?"

"Especially the first."

Serena covered her mouth.

"I failed you."

Lily walked toward her.

"No."

Serena looked up.

"I hurt you."

"You were twelve."

"I watched them take you."

"You were a child."

"I should have stopped them."

Lily touched her hand.

"You tried."

Serena began crying.

"I don't deserve forgiveness."

Lily shook her head.

"This isn't forgiveness."

"Then what is it?"

"Truth."

A gunshot shattered the silence.

Victor Sr. fired at Lily.

Michael moved.

But Lily was faster.

She raised her hand.

The bullet stopped in midair.

Everyone froze.

The projectile dropped harmlessly to the floor.

Victor Sr. stared.

"How?"

Lily looked at him.

"Eden no longer requires machines."

She touched her temple.

"It requires me."

Victor Sr. stumbled backward.

"What are you?"

Lily answered:

"The final interface."

Marcus suddenly appeared on the upper balcony.

Blood covered his shoulder.

He smiled.

"Exactly."

Everyone looked up.

Michael raised his gun.

"You."

Marcus laughed.

"You still haven't learned."

Victor aimed at him.

"This ends now."

Marcus looked at Lily.

"No."

He smiled.

"It begins now."

Lily looked up.

"Marcus."

He bowed slightly.

"Subject Seven."

"You created the protocol."

"Yes."

"You intended to control it."

"Yes."

"But you failed."

Marcus's smile faded.

"What?"

"You made yourself dependent on the interface."

Marcus went still.

Lily continued.

"Me."

She raised her hand.

Marcus grabbed his head.

He screamed.

"No!"

His memories began flashing across every screen.

Children.

Laboratories.

Bodies.

Experiments.

Elena.

Victor.

Michael.

Serena.

Lily.

Marcus fell to his knees.

"What are you doing?"

"Showing you yourself."

"Stop!"

"You wanted control."

Lily's eyes hardened.

"Now you have none."

Marcus screamed.

Then collapsed.

Victor Sr. stared at Lily.

"You can't control everything."

"I don't need to."

"What?"

"I only need to control you."

He reached for his gun.

Michael raised his.

"Don't."

Victor Sr. looked at him.

"You would shoot your grandfather?"

Michael's expression was cold.

"After everything you've done?"

Victor Sr. smiled.

"You still don't understand power."

Michael stepped closer.

"No."

"I understand something better."

"What?"

"You lost."

Victor Sr. laughed.

"Not yet."

He pressed a hidden button.

The floor opened.

A deep mechanical roar shook the facility.

Victor looked down.

"No."

Michael turned.

"What?"

Victor's face went pale.

"The core."

Victor Sr. smiled.

"The original Eden core."

Serena whispered:

"You said it was destroyed."

Victor Sr. looked at her.

"I lied."

Lily stared at the opening.

A massive machine rose from beneath the floor.

Ancient.

Black.

Covered in cables.

Its center glowed white.

Victor whispered:

"That's where it started."

Victor Sr. smiled.

"And where it will end."

The machine activated.

A beam of light shot upward.

Lily screamed.

Michael grabbed her.

"Lily!"

She collapsed against him.

Her body shook.

Thousands of memories flooded her mind.

Seven childhoods.

Seven deaths.

Seven identities.

Seven versions of Michael.

Seven versions of Victor.

She saw Serena.

She saw Elena.

She saw Marcus.

She saw Victor Sr.

And finally—

she saw herself.

Not as a child.

Not as a subject.

But as an adult.

Standing inside this same room.

Giving the order.

Begin final phase.

Lily opened her eyes.

She understood.

The recording from the previous version hadn't been a warning.

It had been a plan.

Michael looked at her.

"What did you see?"

Lily whispered:

"The truth."

Victor stepped closer.

"Tell us."

Lily looked at him.

"None of this was supposed to happen."

Victor frowned.

"Then why did it?"

"Because someone changed the final protocol."

"Who?"

Lily looked toward Marcus.

He was barely conscious.

"Marcus."

Marcus laughed weakly.

"No."

Lily shook her head.

"Not you."

Marcus looked at her.

"Then who?"

Lily turned toward Victor Sr.

"You."

Victor Sr. froze.

"What?"

"You changed Eden."

"Why?"

"Because you wanted immortality."

Victor Sr. smiled.

"Of course."

"You didn't want Victor to live."

"You wanted his identity."

"And mine."

Victor Sr. nodded.

"Yes."

"You wanted to transfer yourself into me."

Silence.

Michael stared at his grandfather.

"You wanted to become Lily."

Victor Sr. answered:

"I wanted the perfect body."

Lily nodded.

"And you failed."

"No."

He smiled.

"I succeeded."

Lily's expression changed.

"What?"

Victor Sr. pointed at her.

"Look at yourself."

Lily froze.

"What?"

"You think you're Lily."

He laughed.

"But you're not."

Michael stepped forward.

"Don't listen to him."

Victor Sr. continued.

"Your memories aren't yours."

"Your childhood isn't yours."

"Your identity isn't yours."

Lily shook her head.

"Stop."

"You are a collection."

"A vessel."

"A machine."

Lily's breathing became faster.

Victor grabbed her shoulder.

"He's manipulating you."

Victor Sr. smiled.

"Am I?"

Lily looked at Victor.

Then Michael.

Then Serena.

For a moment—

she didn't know who to trust.

Then she heard a voice.

A tiny voice.

From the oldest memory.

Her own.

A six-year-old girl.

"If they take your memories, keep one thing."

Lily closed her eyes.

"Remember who you love."

Her eyes opened.

She looked at Michael.

Then Serena.

Then Victor.

And smiled.

"I remember."

Victor Sr. frowned.

"Remember what?"

"Love."

Lily turned toward the Eden core.

"Shut down."

Nothing happened.

She tried again.

"Shut down."

The machine continued.

Victor looked at the controls.

"The core isn't responding."

Lily understood.

"Because it isn't connected to me."

"Then what is it connected to?"

She looked at Victor.

"You."

Victor froze.

"What?"

"The original Subject 00."

Victor stared.

"I don't understand."

"You are the core."

Silence.

Victor looked at his hands.

"No."

Lily stepped closer.

"Your memories are the original Eden architecture."

"You aren't just a subject."

"You're the operating system."

Victor's face went pale.

"Then if I die..."

"The system dies."

Michael immediately shook his head.

"No."

Victor looked at him.

"It's the only way."

"No."

"Michael."

"We'll find another way."

"There isn't one."

Lily stepped forward.

"There is."

Both men looked at her.

"What's the way?"

Lily looked at the core.

"We don't destroy Eden."

"We rewrite it."

Victor frowned.

"How?"

"Together."

She placed her hand against the core.

Victor followed.

Then Michael.

Then Serena.

The machine began to shake.

Their memories connected.

Michael saw Victor's childhood.

Victor saw Michael's.

Serena saw Lily's seven lives.

Lily saw Serena's parents.

She saw Elena.

She saw Marcus.

She saw Victor Sr.

And finally—

they saw the same thing.

A little girl standing in a laboratory.

She was crying.

A scientist knelt before her.

"What's your name?"

The little girl smiled.

"Lily."

"Do you know why you're here?"

She shook her head.

The scientist whispered:

"Because one day you'll save everyone."

The memory ended.

Lily opened her eyes.

"I remember."

Michael looked at her.

"Remember what?"

"Who created the first memory."

Victor stared.

"Who?"

Lily looked toward the ceiling.

"My mother."

Michael frowned.

"Elena?"

Lily nodded.

"She didn't create Eden to control people."

"She created it to preserve them."

Victor Sr. laughed.

"That was her mistake."

Lily shook her head.

"No."

"Your mistake was stealing it."

The core began to overload.

CORE FAILURE: 60 SECONDS.

Victor Sr. tried to escape.

Lily raised her hand.

The doors closed.

"No."

He turned.

"Open them."

"No."

"I'm your family."

"You stopped being family when you decided we were experiments."

He raised his weapon.

Michael stepped forward.

"Drop it."

Victor Sr. aimed at Lily.

Michael fired.

The gun flew from his hand.

Victor Sr. stared at his empty palm.

Then Michael punched him.

He fell.

Serena restrained him.

"Stay down."

Victor Sr. laughed.

"You think this changes anything?"

Lily looked at him.

"Yes."

She touched the core.

"Because you're no longer in control."

Marcus slowly stood.

He was bleeding.

He looked at Lily.

"You can't destroy Eden."

"I'm not."

"Then what are you doing?"

"Ending it."

He laughed.

"What's the difference?"

"Everything."

Lily looked at the screens.

Every memory file appeared.

Every subject.

Every experiment.

Every secret.

Then she pressed her hand against the system.

"Release them."

The machines began transmitting.

Every stored memory was sent to the outside world.

Police databases.

News stations.

Government servers.

Private devices.

Everywhere.

The truth escaped.

Marcus stared at the screens.

"No."

Victor Sr. whispered:

"Stop."

Lily shook her head.

"It's too late."

Millions of files began uploading.

Names.

Dates.

Photographs.

Experiments.

Deaths.

Everything.

Marcus collapsed.

Victor Sr. closed his eyes.

Their empire was dying.

Not from bullets.

Not from explosions.

From truth.

The core reached zero.

Lily screamed.

Michael grabbed her.

Victor grabbed Serena.

The entire facility began collapsing.

"RUN!"

They sprinted toward the emergency exit.

Concrete crashed behind them.

Fire filled the corridors.

The archive disappeared beneath falling stone.

Victor stumbled.

Michael grabbed him.

"Come on!"

"I can't."

"Yes, you can."

Victor looked at him.

"My memories are failing."

Michael shook his head.

"Then take mine."

"What?"

"You're my brother."

Michael held out his hand.

"You don't have to carry everything alone."

Victor stared at him.

Then took his hand.

They ran.

Lily followed.

Serena behind them.

The facility collapsed.

They reached the surface.

And jumped clear.

A massive explosion shook the earth.

Then—

silence.

Morning came slowly.

Rain fell over the ruined estate.

Police cars surrounded the property.

Ambulances waited.

Survivors were brought out.

Marcus was arrested.

Victor Sr. was arrested.

The Project Mirror files were everywhere.

The world finally knew.

Lily stood beneath a gray sky.

Michael beside her.

Victor and Serena behind them.

For the first time—

there were no guards.

No machines.

No laboratories.

No locked doors.

Michael looked at Lily.

"Are you okay?"

She smiled.

"I don't know."

"That's honest."

She laughed softly.

"That's new."

Victor stepped closer.

"There's still one problem."

Lily looked at him.

"What?"

Victor held up a small device.

A final Eden key.

The screen displayed one message.

TRANSFER COMPLETE.

Michael frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Victor looked at Lily.

"It means someone survived."

"Who?"

Victor turned the device around.

A photograph appeared.

Elena.

Alive.

Michael's face changed.

"Mom."

Lily stared.

"Where is she?"

The screen displayed coordinates.

Somewhere far away.

Then another message appeared.

SHE IS WAITING.

Lily looked at Michael.

"We're not finished."

Michael smiled.

"I know."

Victor looked toward the horizon.

"No."

He shook his head.

"We're just beginning."

Far away—

in a small underground room—

Elena opened her eyes.

She was sitting beside a hospital bed.

A young boy slept beneath the blanket.

Elena touched his forehead.

"Wake up."

The boy opened his eyes.

"Where am I?"

Elena smiled.

"You're home."

The boy looked around.

"Who are you?"

Elena's smile disappeared.

"I'm your mother."

The boy frowned.

"I don't remember you."

Elena looked toward the camera.

Then whispered:

"That's because you're not supposed to."

The camera pulled back.

On the wall behind her was a symbol.

A black circle.

Seven lines.

And beneath it—

one final label.

EDEN — PHASE TWO.

Elena looked directly into the camera.

"Let's begin again."

But somewhere across the city—

Lily suddenly woke from a nightmare.

She sat upright.

Her heart racing.

Michael was asleep nearby.

Victor was sleeping in another room.

Serena stood watch outside.

Lily closed her eyes.

And heard a child's voice inside her head.

Her own voice.

Whispering:

"You forgot one thing."

Lily opened her eyes.

"What?"

The voice answered:

"There were eight."

Lily froze.

Because the nightmare had changed.

There were no longer seven girls in the laboratory.

There were eight.

May you like

And the eighth one—

was standing behind her.
