CHAPTER 15 — THE FAMILY HE CHOSE

CHAPTER 15 — THE FAMILY HE CHOSE

Lily woke with a scream.

She sat upright in the darkness, one hand pressed against her chest.

Her heart was racing.

The room was silent.

Too silent.

Moonlight slipped through the curtains.

Michael was asleep in the chair beside her bed, his head tilted against the wall.

Victor was in the adjoining room.

Serena was supposed to be standing guard outside.

Lily looked toward the door.

It was open.

"Serena?"

No answer.

Lily slowly got out of bed.

Her feet touched the cold floor.

She walked toward the hallway.

"Serena?"

Still nothing.

Then she heard it.

A child's laughter.

Soft.

Faint.

Coming from the end of the corridor.

Lily froze.

She knew that sound.

She had heard it in her dreams.

The eighth child.

Lily walked toward it.

The hallway seemed longer than it had been moments before.

At the end stood a small mirror.

Lily stopped in front of it.

Her reflection stared back.

Then—

another girl appeared behind her.

About six years old.

White dress.

Bare feet.

Dark hair.

Lily turned.

Nobody.

She looked back at the mirror.

The girl was still there.

Lily whispered:

"Who are you?"

The child smiled.

"You forgot me."

Lily's breath caught.

"What?"

"You remember seven."

The girl touched the mirror.

"But there were eight."

Lily stepped closer.

"What's your name?"

The girl smiled.

"You know."

Lily shook her head.

"No."

The girl whispered:

"Look."

The mirror changed.

Lily saw the laboratory.

Eight beds.

Eight children.

Eight numbers.

00.

01.

02.

03.

04.

05.

06.

07.

Then she saw something that made her blood turn cold.

The eighth bed wasn't labeled.

It was empty.

The child stood beside it.

Then the mirror cracked.

Lily jumped backward.

The image disappeared.

Michael suddenly appeared behind her.

"Lily?"

She turned.

"Michael."

He looked worried.

"What happened?"

She pointed at the mirror.

"Someone was here."

Michael looked.

There was nothing.

"Lily..."

"I saw her."

"Who?"

"The eighth."

Michael went silent.

Then he smiled.

Not because he thought she was imagining things.

Because he understood.

"She's not another subject."

Lily stared at him.

"How do you know?"

"Because Eden had seven experiments."

He looked at the mirror.

"But only one observer."

Lily frowned.

"Who?"

Michael's expression changed.

"Us."

Morning came.

The ruined Blackwood estate was surrounded by police.

The Project Mirror files had spread across the world.

Names were being investigated.

Companies were collapsing.

Officials were resigning.

Doctors who had participated in the experiments were being arrested.

Families were finally learning what had happened to their missing children.

The truth could no longer be buried.

But Lily knew the truth wasn't the same thing as justice.

Justice would take years.

Maybe decades.

She stood outside the hospital.

Michael joined her.

"You haven't slept."

"Neither have you."

He smiled.

"Fair."

Lily looked at the sky.

"Do you ever wonder who we would have been?"

"If none of this happened?"

"Yes."

Michael thought for a moment.

"I would've been annoying."

Lily laughed.

"You already are."

"And you would've been stubborn."

"I already am."

Michael looked at her.

"Maybe that's the point."

"What?"

"Maybe they changed our memories."

"Maybe they changed our names."

"Maybe they changed our lives."

He smiled.

"But they didn't create everything."

Lily looked at him.

"What do you mean?"

"You still chose."

She smiled.

"So did you."

Michael nodded.

"Yeah."

He held out his hand.

Lily took it.

For the first time, there was no machine telling them what they were.

No scientist.

No number.

No protocol.

Just two people choosing to stand together.

Serena came outside.

She carried a folder.

"We found something."

Lily's smile disappeared.

"What?"

Serena handed her the folder.

"Your mother."

Lily opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

Elena stood beside a small house.

Behind her was a young boy.

Lily stared.

"That's the child."

Serena nodded.

"The one from the final transmission."

Michael stepped closer.

"Where?"

Serena pointed to the coordinates.

"Outside Chicago."

Lily closed the folder.

"We're going."

Serena looked at her.

"You should know something first."

"What?"

"The boy isn't Subject 08."

Lily frowned.

"Then who is he?"

Serena looked toward Michael.

"Michael."

He froze.

"What?"

Serena continued:

"The boy is his son."

Silence.

Michael stared.

"I don't have a son."

"You did."

Lily looked at Serena.

"What does that mean?"

Serena opened another file.

"There was an experiment before Project Mirror."

"One Elena never told you about."

Michael took the file.

His hands began shaking.

Inside was a photograph.

A woman.

Young.

Pregnant.

Michael stared.

"I don't remember her."

Serena whispered:

"Because Marcus removed those memories."

Lily looked at him.

"Michael..."

He couldn't speak.

Serena continued:

"The child was born."

"Elena took him."

"She hid him from Marcus."

"And when Project Mirror collapsed, she brought him back."

Michael closed the file.

"I have a son."

Lily placed a hand on his shoulder.

"Then let's go meet him."

The house was small.

White walls.

A wooden porch.

A garden.

Nothing about it looked dangerous.

Nothing looked like Eden.

Lily stood at the gate.

Michael was beside her.

Serena stayed several steps behind.

Victor waited in the car.

Michael looked nervous.

"I don't know what to say."

Lily smiled.

"Say hello."

"What if he doesn't recognize me?"

"He shouldn't."

"What if he hates me?"

"Then give him time."

"What if..."

Lily squeezed his hand.

"Michael."

He looked at her.

"You spent your entire life being told who you were."

"Today you get to choose."

Michael took a breath.

Then knocked.

The door opened.

Elena stood there.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

Michael stared at her.

"You knew."

Elena nodded.

"I did."

"You knew I had a son."

"Yes."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because Marcus would have found him."

Michael's voice became bitter.

"You took my child."

"I protected him."

"You took everything from me."

Elena's eyes filled with tears.

"I know."

Lily stepped forward.

"Where is he?"

Elena looked behind her.

"Inside."

A little boy appeared.

About ten years old.

Dark hair.

Brown eyes.

He looked at Michael.

Then Lily.

Then Serena.

He didn't seem afraid.

Elena whispered:

"This is Noah."

Michael couldn't move.

The boy stared at him.

"Are you Michael?"

Michael nodded.

"Yes."

Noah looked confused.

"My grandmother said you were dead."

Michael swallowed.

"I thought you were."

Noah frowned.

"Why?"

Michael looked at Lily.

Then back at the boy.

"Because someone lied to us."

Noah studied him.

"Are you my father?"

Michael's eyes filled with tears.

"Yes."

The boy nodded slowly.

Then asked:

"Can I call you Dad?"

Michael broke.

He knelt.

"Yes."

Noah ran into his arms.

Michael held him tightly.

Lily looked away.

She cried silently.

Serena put an arm around her.

"You okay?"

Lily nodded.

"Yes."

"Really?"

Lily smiled through her tears.

"Yes."

Because this was the first family reunion in her life that wasn't forced by a machine.

No one had programmed it.

No one had ordered it.

No one had created it.

They had chosen it.

Victor stood alone outside.

He watched through the window.

Lily eventually stepped out.

"You don't have to stay outside."

Victor smiled.

"I know."

"Then why are you?"

He looked through the window.

"Because I don't know where I belong."

Lily sat beside him.

"You belong with us."

Victor shook his head.

"I'm not Michael."

"I know."

"I'm not the Victor they remember."

"I know."

"I'm not the man my father wanted me to become."

Lily smiled.

"Good."

Victor laughed.

"Good?"

"Very good."

He looked at her.

"What am I, then?"

Lily thought about it.

"You're Victor."

"That's it?"

"That's enough."

Victor looked toward the house.

Michael was playing with Noah.

Serena was helping Elena prepare food.

For the first time, Victor looked peaceful.

"I never had that."

"What?"

"A family that wasn't part of an experiment."

Lily smiled.

"Then stay."

Victor looked at her.

"Are you sure?"

"No."

He laughed.

"Honest."

"I'm still learning."

Victor nodded.

"So am I."

He stood.

Then walked toward the house.

Later that evening, they sat around the same table.

Six people.

Michael.

Lily.

Victor.

Serena.

Elena.

Noah.

No guards.

No scientists.

No cameras.

No machines.

Just food.

Conversation.

Laughter.

Silence.

Normal things.

Noah looked around.

"Why are there so many people here?"

Michael smiled.

"Because we're family."

Noah looked at Lily.

"Are you my aunt?"

Lily laughed.

"I guess I am."

"Then why do you look sad?"

Lily looked at him.

"I'm not sad."

"You are."

She smiled.

"I'm remembering."

"Remembering what?"

"Everything."

Noah tilted his head.

"Is that bad?"

Lily looked around the table.

"No."

She smiled.

"Not anymore."

After dinner, Elena asked Lily to stay behind.

Everyone else left the room.

Elena sat across from her.

"I owe you the truth."

Lily nodded.

"I know."

"I failed you."

"Yes."

"I failed Michael."

"Yes."

"I failed Serena."

"Yes."

Elena looked down.

"I don't expect forgiveness."

Lily was silent.

Then she said:

"You don't have to ask."

Elena looked up.

"Why?"

"Because forgiveness isn't the same as forgetting."

Lily reached across the table.

"I remember everything."

"The good."

"The bad."

"The lies."

"The pain."

"But I choose what happens next."

Elena began crying.

Lily squeezed her hand.

"I choose not to become you."

Elena nodded.

"That's all I ever wanted."

Lily frowned.

"No."

She shook her head.

"That's what you wanted for me."

"What do you want?"

Lily looked toward the doorway.

Michael was laughing with Noah.

Victor was arguing with Serena about something.

Lily smiled.

"I want this."

Elena followed her gaze.

"A family."

"Yes."

"Even after everything?"

"Especially after everything."

Weeks passed.

The Project Mirror trials began.

Marcus survived.

Victor Sr. survived.

Both faced charges for kidnapping, murder, illegal experimentation and countless other crimes.

The truth about Eden became public.

The facilities were destroyed.

The remaining subjects were found.

Families were reunited.

Some stories ended happily.

Others didn't.

Some memories were too damaged to recover.

Some people never returned home.

Lily learned to accept that she couldn't save everyone.

But she could save herself.

She changed her name.

Not because she hated Lily.

Because she finally understood that the name belonged to her.

She kept it.

Lily.

Not Subject 07.

Not a prototype.

Not a vessel.

Lily.

Michael began building a life with Noah.

Victor became the legal witness who exposed the Blackwood network from inside.

Serena opened a foundation for survivors of experimental abuse.

Elena testified.

For the first time, she told the truth without trying to protect anyone from it.

And Lily—

Lily went back to the mansion.

Not as a nanny.

Not as a subject.

Not as someone's daughter.

She went back because she wanted to.

The house no longer frightened her.

The marble foyer was still there.

The staircase.

The chandelier.

The nursery.

Everything looked smaller now.

Lily stood in the center of the foyer.

She remembered Serena dragging Ethan.

She remembered screaming.

She remembered being kicked to the floor.

She remembered believing no one would ever come.

Then she heard footsteps.

Michael.

He entered carrying Noah.

"Found you."

Lily smiled.

"I was remembering."

Michael nodded.

"Bad memories?"

"Some."

"Good ones?"

She looked at Noah.

"New ones."

Noah ran toward her.

"Aunt Lily!"

She caught him.

He laughed.

Michael watched them.

Then said:

"Mom called."

Lily's expression changed.

"Is she okay?"

"She's fine."

"What did she say?"

Michael smiled.

"She said dinner is ready."

Lily laughed.

"Of course she did."

Noah grabbed her hand.

"Come on."

Lily followed.

Then stopped.

She looked back at the foyer.

For a moment, she saw the past.

A terrified nanny.

A crying baby.

A cruel woman.

A little girl.

A broken family.

Then the image disappeared.

Only sunlight remained.

Michael noticed.

"You okay?"

Lily smiled.

"Yeah."

She walked toward him.

"I finally understand something."

"What?"

"They spent years trying to decide who we were."

Michael looked at her.

"And?"

Lily took his hand.

"They failed."

"Why?"

"Because they forgot the one thing they couldn't control."

Michael smiled.

"What?"

Lily looked at Noah.

Then Victor.

Then Serena.

Then Elena.

And finally—

at herself.

"Who we choose to love."

That night, Lily returned to her room.

She stood before the mirror.

For a moment, she expected to see the little girl again.

The eighth child.

The empty bed.

The white laboratory.

But there was nothing.

Only her reflection.

She smiled.

"Who are you?"

The reflection smiled back.

"Lily."

She laughed softly.

Then turned off the light.

The room became dark.

And for the first time in her life—

the darkness didn't frighten her.

Months later, Lily visited the old Project Mirror site.

Nothing remained.

Only broken concrete and wild grass.

She stood there alone.

Then she placed a small flower on the ground.

Not for Marcus.

Not for Victor Sr.

Not for the scientists.

For the children.

All of them.

The ones whose names had been forgotten.

The ones who never made it out.

The ones who deserved a life.

She whispered:

"You were more than numbers."

The wind moved through the grass.

Lily closed her eyes.

"I remember you."

Behind her, footsteps approached.

She turned.

Michael.

Victor.

Serena.

Noah.

Elena.

Her family.

The family she had chosen.

Michael smiled.

"Ready?"

Lily looked at the ruins one last time.

Then nodded.

"Yes."

They walked away together.

No one followed.

No machines waited beneath the ground.

No secret laboratory opened behind them.

No voice called Lily back.

The past remained behind.

And for the first time—

it stayed there.

Years later, people would still talk about the Blackwood case.

They would call it one of the darkest criminal conspiracies in Chicago.

They would write books about Project Mirror.

They would make documentaries about Eden.

They would argue about whether a person could survive after having their memories rewritten.

Scientists would debate identity.

Lawyers would debate responsibility.

Psychologists would debate trauma.

But Lily never cared about the debates.

She knew the answer.

A person wasn't their memories alone.

A person wasn't their blood.

A person wasn't the name written on a file.

A person was the choices they made after everything had been taken away.

And Lily had lost almost everything.

Her childhood.

Her memories.

Her family.

Her identity.

Her innocence.

But she had gained something no experiment could manufacture.

Choice.

She chose Michael.

She chose Victor.

She chose Serena.

She chose Noah.

She chose Elena—not because Elena had earned forgiveness, but because Lily refused to let hatred control the rest of her life.

And most importantly—

she chose herself.

One final photograph was taken that summer.

Six people stood together beneath the old oak tree.

Michael held Noah.

Serena stood beside Victor.

Elena sat in the center.

Lily stood behind them all.

Nobody posed perfectly.

No one looked at the camera at the same time.

No one had rehearsed a smile.

It was imperfect.

Real.

Human.

The photographer counted.

"Three."

Michael laughed.

"Wait."

"Two."

Noah moved.

"One."

The camera flashed.

And Lily smiled.

Not because she had forgotten the past.

But because she remembered it—

and survived.

The photograph was later placed inside a frame.

On the back, Lily wrote six names.

Michael.

Victor.

Serena.

Noah.

Elena.

And finally—

Lily.

Underneath them, she wrote one sentence:

THEY TRIED TO CHOOSE WHO WE WOULD BECOME.

Then another:

WE CHOSE EACH OTHER.

And that—

more than any secret,

more than any experiment,

more than any empire—

May you like

was the one thing Eden could never take away.
