CHAPTER 6 — THE CHILD WHO SURVIVED

CHAPTER 6 — THE CHILD WHO SURVIVED

The gunshot echoed through the warehouse.

Lily froze.

Michael grabbed her hand.

"Run."

She couldn't move.

Not because she was afraid.

Because she was looking at him.

Her little brother.

The boy she had searched for in dreams.

The boy whose face had slowly faded from her memory.

The boy she had believed was dead.

He was standing in front of her.

Alive.

Older.

Scarred.

But alive.

"Michael..."

He pulled her toward the door.

"Lily, we have to go."

"But—"

"Now."

Another gunshot exploded somewhere outside.

Michael shoved open a side door.

Cold night air rushed inside.

Lily stumbled after him.

"Where are we going?"

"Anywhere away from here."

"Who shot at us?"

"Marcus's men."

Lily stopped.

"You said Marcus wasn't here."

"He doesn't have to be."

Michael looked over his shoulder.

"He always sends someone first."

They ran.

Behind them, the warehouse filled with shouting.

Footsteps.

Men yelling.

Doors crashing open.

Michael pulled Lily through a narrow passage between two buildings.

Lily struggled to keep up.

"Wait!"

He stopped.

She nearly crashed into him.

Michael turned.

"You okay?"

She was crying.

He looked at her face.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then he touched her cheek.

"You're really here."

Lily grabbed his hand.

"So are you."

Michael smiled.

A broken, emotional smile.

"I thought you were dead."

"I thought you were."

"I looked for you."

"Where?"

"Everywhere."

Lily shook her head.

"I don't remember."

"I know."

"You remember everything?"

Michael looked away.

"No."

His voice became quieter.

"Not everything."

Lily squeezed his hand.

"Tell me."

Michael stared into the darkness.

"I remember enough."

He started walking.

Lily followed.

"We weren't orphans."

She stopped.

"What?"

"Our parents were alive."

Lily stared at him.

"My mother?"

"Yes."

"Then why did she disappear?"

Michael didn't answer immediately.

"Because she tried to get us out."

"From Project Mirror?"

He nodded.

"She found out what they were doing."

"What were they doing?"

Michael's expression hardened.

"Testing children."

"Why?"

"To create people who couldn't be controlled."

Lily's blood ran cold.

"Controlled by whom?"

Michael looked at her.

"People like Marcus."

They continued walking.

Lily's mind raced.

"Then why did they choose us?"

Michael stopped.

"You."

He pointed at her.

"Because you were Subject 07."

"And you?"

"Subject 08."

"What made us special?"

Michael shook his head.

"You survived."

"Survived what?"

He looked at her.

"The mirror."

Lily frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Michael took a deep breath.

"The tests were designed to break memory."

"Break memory?"

"Yes."

He continued.

"They would show children things that never happened."

"Why?"

"To see if we could tell reality from lies."

Lily's stomach tightened.

"Is that why I can't remember?"

"Partly."

Michael looked away.

"They didn't just erase your memories."

"They changed them."

Lily stopped walking.

"What?"

"They made you believe things that weren't true."

"Like what?"

Michael stared at her.

"That I died."

Tears filled Lily's eyes.

"Why?"

"Because it made you easier to control."

She shook her head.

"Who did this?"

Michael's answer was quiet.

"Your mother."

Lily froze.

"My mother?"

"She was forced to participate."

"No."

"She tried to stop it."

Lily stared at him.

"You said she escaped."

"She tried."

"What happened?"

Michael looked at her.

"She failed."

Across the city, Victor stood in the warehouse surrounded by photographs.

Daniel approached.

"We lost them."

Victor's eyes remained on the wall.

"How?"

"Someone disabled the cameras."

"Again?"

"Yes."

Victor looked at the photograph of Lily and Michael.

"Where did they go?"

"We're tracking their phones."

"They don't have them."

Daniel paused.

"What?"

"Marcus took them."

Victor's expression hardened.

"He wants us to know they're alive."

Daniel frowned.

"Why?"

Victor turned toward him.

"Because he wants me to follow."

Daniel's face tightened.

"It's a trap."

"I know."

"Then we shouldn't go."

Victor picked up his coat.

"We're going."

Daniel stared.

"Boss—"

"I know it's a trap."

Victor's voice became cold.

"But Lily is inside it."

Lily and Michael reached an abandoned train station.

The place had been empty for years.

Broken windows.

Rusting tracks.

Old advertisements peeling from the walls.

Michael led her into a maintenance room.

He locked the door.

For the first time since escaping, Lily could breathe.

Michael looked at her.

"Are you hurt?"

"No."

"Did Serena hurt you?"

Lily hesitated.

"She kidnapped me."

Michael's face darkened.

"Serena."

"You know her?"

"Yes."

"How?"

Michael laughed bitterly.

"She was there."

"At the facility?"

"Yes."

"She worked for them?"

"Not exactly."

Lily frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Michael sat down.

"Serena was a subject too."

Lily stared.

"What?"

"Subject 03."

Silence.

"She was a child?"

Michael nodded.

"She was twelve."

"Then why does she hate me?"

"Because she believes you took everything from her."

"I don't understand."

Michael looked at Lily.

"Subject 07 was the successful one."

"And Serena?"

"Subject 03 failed."

Lily's face tightened.

"What happened to her?"

Michael looked away.

"They broke her."

Lily whispered:

"And she blames me."

"Yes."

"But I never did anything to her."

"I know."

Michael leaned forward.

"That's the problem."

"What?"

"She doesn't care."

Lily looked at him.

Michael continued.

"She needs someone to blame."

A long silence followed.

Then Lily asked:

"What happened to you after we were separated?"

Michael stared at the floor.

"They took me to another facility."

"Where?"

"I don't know."

"How long?"

"Years."

"Who took care of you?"

"No one."

Lily's eyes filled with tears.

"You were a child."

"So were you."

"Did they hurt you?"

Michael didn't answer.

Lily understood.

She reached for his hand.

He let her hold it.

"I should have found you."

"You were six."

"I promised I'd protect you."

"You did."

She looked at him.

"How?"

"You survived."

Lily began crying.

Michael squeezed her hand.

"That's what they never understood."

"What?"

"They thought surviving meant being obedient."

He looked at her.

"But surviving meant remembering who we were."

Lily wiped her tears.

"Do you remember Mom?"

Michael's expression softened.

"Sometimes."

"What happened to her?"

"She escaped."

"Are you sure?"

"Yes."

"Then where is she?"

Michael looked toward the locked door.

"She disappeared."

"Like you?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because Marcus wanted her dead."

Lily's heart tightened.

"Why?"

"She had something."

"What?"

Michael leaned closer.

"The original Project Mirror file."

Lily stared.

"Where is it?"

Michael shook his head.

"I don't know."

"Then why did Marcus think you did?"

"Because he believed Mom gave it to me."

"Did she?"

Michael hesitated.

"I don't know."

Lily stared at him.

"What aren't you telling me?"

Michael looked away.

"There's something you need to remember."

"What?"

"The night we escaped."

Lily's breathing slowed.

"What happened?"

"You weren't supposed to survive."

"Why?"

"Because Subject 07 wasn't just a test."

"What was I?"

Michael looked at her.

"You were the key."

"To what?"

He didn't answer.

Instead, he reached into his jacket.

He pulled out a small metal pendant.

Lily recognized it instantly.

Her mother's.

She touched it.

"Where did you get that?"

"Mom gave it to me."

"When?"

"The night we were separated."

Lily turned it over.

There was a tiny symbol engraved on the back.

The same black circle crossed by three lines.

Project Mirror.

Michael pointed.

"There's a compartment."

Lily looked closely.

A small seam ran around the pendant.

Michael pressed it.

The pendant opened.

Inside was a tiny piece of paper.

Lily unfolded it.

Three words were written.

SEVEN REMEMBERS EVERYTHING.

Lily stared.

"What does this mean?"

Michael shook his head.

"I don't know."

Then Lily saw another line.

Written beneath the first.

ELEVEN IS THE CURE.

Her blood ran cold.

"Eleven."

Michael's expression changed.

"Victor."

Lily looked at him.

"Subject 11."

Michael nodded.

"He wasn't supposed to be a subject."

"Then why was he?"

"Because Victor's father needed someone from inside the family."

Lily stared at him.

"Victor knew?"

"No."

Michael shook his head.

"He was seventeen."

"He was there."

"He tried to stop them."

Lily remembered the video.

Victor.

Young.

Angry.

Terrified.

Telling his father to let them go.

She closed her eyes.

"I thought he was part of it."

"He was."

Michael paused.

"But not by choice."

At the Blackwood mansion, Victor stood alone in his father's study.

He had found another hidden drawer.

Inside was a tape recorder.

Old.

Dust-covered.

Victor pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then his father's voice.

"If you're listening to this, I'm already dead."

Victor's jaw tightened.

The recording continued.

"I know what you'll think."

A pause.

"You'll think I betrayed you."

Victor stared at the recorder.

"You'll be right."

His father's voice became quieter.

"But you don't know the whole truth."

Static.

Then:

"Subject 07 was never meant to be a weapon."

Victor froze.

"She was meant to be a safeguard."

He leaned closer.

"Marcus wanted to use Project Mirror to control people."

A pause.

"I refused."

Victor's eyes narrowed.

"I created Subject 11 as a countermeasure."

Victor stopped breathing.

"Victor."

His own name.

Hearing it from his dead father's voice felt unnatural.

"You were never supposed to know."

The recording crackled.

"You were exposed to the same conditioning as the other subjects."

Victor's hand tightened.

"But unlike them, you had something they didn't."

The recording stopped for several seconds.

Then:

"Family."

Victor looked confused.

His father's voice continued.

"That was the variable Marcus could never understand."

"Love."

The tape clicked.

"Your bond with your mother."

"Your bond with Lily."

Victor's eyes widened.

He looked at the photograph.

Lily.

A little girl.

His childhood.

His mother.

His father.

Everything was connected.

The recording continued.

"If Marcus ever discovers the truth, he will come for Lily."

Victor whispered:

"What truth?"

His father's final words answered.

"She carries the memory."

The tape stopped.

Victor stared at the machine.

Then Daniel rushed into the room.

"Boss."

Victor looked up.

"What?"

"We found a location."

"Where?"

"A train station."

Victor stood.

"Lily?"

"We think so."

"Michael?"

"He's with her."

Victor grabbed his coat.

"Let's go."

Daniel hesitated.

"There is one more thing."

Victor stopped.

"What?"

"We found a body."

"Whose?"

Daniel swallowed.

"Thomas."

Victor's eyes narrowed.

"Where?"

"Inside the hospital."

"How?"

"His body was found in a maintenance tunnel."

Victor's face hardened.

"Dead?"

Daniel nodded.

"Yes."

"How?"

"One gunshot."

Victor looked at him.

"Who killed him?"

"We don't know."

Victor stared into the distance.

"Marcus?"

Daniel shook his head.

"No."

"How do you know?"

Daniel handed him a photograph.

The bullet casing.

Victor looked at it.

His face changed.

"This isn't Marcus's weapon."

"Whose is it?"

Victor recognized the markings.

His father's old private security unit.

A unit that had officially been disbanded twenty years ago.

Victor whispered:

"Someone else is playing."

The train station trembled under a distant explosion.

Lily looked at Michael.

"What was that?"

He stood.

"Stay here."

"No."

"Lily—"

"I'm not losing you again."

Michael stared at her.

Then smiled faintly.

"Still stubborn."

"Still your sister."

He nodded.

"Fair."

Another explosion.

Closer.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

Michael grabbed her hand.

"We need another exit."

They ran.

The maintenance room opened into a narrow tunnel.

They moved quickly.

Then headlights appeared ahead.

Michael stopped.

Lily froze.

A black SUV rolled slowly into the tunnel.

The doors opened.

Men stepped out.

Armed.

Michael pulled Lily behind him.

A familiar voice echoed through the darkness.

"You've made this much harder than it needed to be."

Serena stepped forward.

Lily's heart sank.

Behind her stood Marcus.

For the first time, Lily saw him clearly.

Older than she remembered.

Silver hair.

Cold eyes.

A scar across his cheek.

Marcus looked at Michael.

Then Lily.

He smiled.

"Subject 07."

Lily's hands clenched.

"I'm not a subject."

Marcus laughed.

"That's what your mother wanted you to believe."

Michael stepped forward.

"Leave her alone."

Marcus looked at him.

"Subject 08."

Michael's expression hardened.

"You failed."

Marcus smiled.

"Did I?"

He looked at Lily.

"You're standing here because of me."

"No."

Lily shook her head.

"I'm standing here because I survived you."

Marcus's smile faded.

"Exactly."

He raised his gun.

"And that's why you are so valuable."

A sudden burst of gunfire erupted.

Michael pulled Lily to the ground.

Men scattered.

Then another sound filled the tunnel.

Engines.

Black vehicles came crashing through the station entrance.

Victor.

He stepped out with a gun in his hand.

"Get away from her."

Marcus smiled.

"There he is."

Victor aimed directly at him.

"Let Lily go."

Marcus laughed.

"You still don't understand."

Victor's eyes narrowed.

"Understand what?"

Marcus pointed toward Lily.

"She isn't the victim."

Victor looked at Lily.

Marcus continued.

"She's the only person alive who remembers what really happened."

Victor froze.

Marcus smiled.

"And when she remembers everything..."

He looked at Victor.

"...she'll remember what you did."

Lily's face went pale.

Victor's expression changed.

"What is he talking about?"

Marcus laughed.

"You don't remember, do you?"

Victor said nothing.

Marcus looked at Lily.

"Tell him."

Lily shook her head.

"I don't know."

Marcus smiled.

"You will."

Then he lowered his weapon.

"Because Subject 07 always remembers."

Suddenly the lights exploded.

Darkness swallowed the tunnel.

Victor heard Lily scream.

He fired.

Men shouted.

Michael yelled her name.

Then silence.

The emergency lights flickered back on.

Marcus was gone.

Serena was gone.

And Lily—

was gone.

Victor stood frozen.

Michael stared at him.

"They took her."

Victor's jaw tightened.

"No."

He looked toward the tunnel.

"They didn't take her."

Michael frowned.

"What?"

Victor walked forward.

He found a small object on the ground.

Lily's pendant.

Broken.

Victor picked it up.

On the floor beside it was a message written in blood.

SUBJECT 07 HAS AWAKENED.

Michael stared at the words.

Victor looked at him.

"Where would they take her?"

Michael's face went pale.

"There's only one place."

"Where?"

Michael whispered:

"The original facility."

Victor's eyes hardened.

"Where is it?"

Michael looked at him.

"Under the Blackwood estate."

Victor went completely still.

"What?"

Michael nodded.

"The place where it all began."

He looked toward the darkness.

"And where your father buried the truth."

Victor tightened his grip around the broken pendant.

Then he said the words that would change everything:

"Take me there."

But neither man noticed the figure standing far above them on the old railway bridge.

A woman watched the scene in silence.

Dark hair.

White coat.

A silver bracelet.

She lifted a phone.

"He's coming."

A voice answered.

"Good."

The woman looked down at Victor.

Then at Michael.

Then toward the darkness where Lily had disappeared.

She whispered:

"Now we find out whether Subject 07 really remembers."

She ended the call.

And walked away.

Her face was finally visible beneath the moonlight.

Elena Blackwood.

Victor's mother.

May you like

Alive.

And smiling.
