CHAPTER 12

CHAPTER 12

The Second Chance Family

The letter stayed hidden for three days.

Hunter carried it everywhere.

Inside her pocket.

Inside her bag.

Under her pillow at night.

She read the words until they stopped looking like sentences and started looking like a threat carved into her mind.

Lily was not supposed to die.

Four words.

Four words that reopened every wound she had spent months trying to close.

Because losing Lily had been the one pain she accepted she could never escape.

Her daughter was gone.

That was the truth.

A terrible truth.

A permanent truth.

But now someone was telling her that even that tragedy had a secret.

And secrets were something Hunter had learned to fear.

Especially inside the Rossi family.

Lorenzo noticed.

Of course he noticed.

He had spent years reading enemies.

Now he was learning to read Hunter.

The way she became quiet when she was afraid.

The way she touched Leo's blanket whenever she needed comfort.

The way she smiled for everyone except herself.

"You haven't slept."

Hunter looked up from the kitchen table.

It was midnight.

The mansion was silent.

"Neither have you."

Lorenzo sat across from her.

"I asked first."

She looked away.

"I am fine."

He almost smiled.

Because that was the biggest lie she told.

Not because she wanted to deceive him.

Because she had survived by pretending she was fine.

"That's what people say when they're not."

Hunter looked at him.

"You sound like Sophia."

The name softened him.

"I learned from her."

A pause.

"Too late."

Hunter saw the pain behind the words.

And for the first time, she realized something.

Lorenzo was not only mourning Sophia.

He was mourning every lesson he learned after losing her.

"What happened?"

The question was simple.

But Hunter froze.

Because telling Lorenzo meant admitting she had hidden something.

And after everything...

she didn't want another secret between them.

Slowly, she pulled the letter from her pocket.

Lorenzo read it.

His expression changed immediately.

Not anger.

Fear.

The same fear he had when Leo was sick.

"Who sent this?"

"I don't know."

"Who has seen it?"

"No one."

His eyes lifted.

"Hunter."

"I know."

She sighed.

"But I needed time."

"Time for what?"

She looked at him.

"To decide if I could trust you."

The words hurt.

But Lorenzo accepted them.

Because he knew he had earned that doubt.

"You should have told me."

"I know."

"Why didn't you?"

Her voice became quiet.

"Because every time something terrible happens around you..."

A pause.

"I become afraid that I am just another person you need to protect."

Lorenzo stared at her.

"That's not what you are."

"Then what am I?"

The question remained between them.

For a moment, Lorenzo had no answer.

Because the answer was too dangerous.

Too honest.

Finally, he said:

"You're family."

Hunter looked away.

The word affected her more than she expected.

Family.

A word she had lost.

A word she thought she would never have again.

The investigation into Lily's death began immediately.

But this time, Lorenzo did something different.

He did not hide information.

He did not make decisions alone.

He included Hunter.

Every file.

Every report.

Every detail.

Because he understood something now.

Protecting someone did not mean controlling their life.

It meant standing beside them.

They found the hospital records first.

And something was wrong.

A missing page.

A changed signature.

A medication order that had no explanation.

Hunter stared at the documents.

"Someone altered this."

Marcus nodded.

"Yes."

"Who?"

Nobody answered.

Because the person who changed the records had access to the hospital system.

Someone important.

Someone powerful.

Again.

The same pattern.

Then they found the name.

Dr. Julian Halloran.

The same doctor who treated Leo.

Hunter went still.

"No."

Lorenzo looked at her.

"You trust him."

She nodded.

"He saved Leo."

A pause.

"How could he be involved?"

Lorenzo didn't answer.

Because he didn't want to believe it either.

Halloran had been one of the few people he trusted.

One of the few who seemed to care about Leo.

But the Rossi family had taught him one painful lesson.

Appearances meant nothing.

The confrontation happened quietly.

Lorenzo invited Dr. Halloran to the estate.

Not with guards.

Not with threats.

Just a conversation.

The doctor immediately sensed something was wrong.

"What is this about?"

Lorenzo placed the old hospital records on the table.

Halloran's face changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

Hunter saw it.

And her heart sank.

"You know about Lily."

The doctor closed his eyes.

"I was afraid this day would come."

Silence.

Lorenzo stepped forward.

"Explain."

Halloran sat down.

He looked older suddenly.

"I'm sorry."

Hunter's eyes filled.

"Don't say that."

Her voice shook.

"Everyone says that."

The doctor looked at her.

"I know."

A pause.

"And I'm sorry that those words are all I have left."

The truth was painful.

Lily had not died because of medical complications alone.

There had been an error.

A deliberate one.

Someone had changed the treatment instructions.

Someone had interfered.

But Halloran had discovered it too late.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Hunter whispered.

The doctor looked down.

"Because I was threatened."

Lorenzo's expression darkened.

"By whom?"

Halloran looked at him.

"The same people who wanted Leo gone."

The room became silent.

"Your family."

Hunter broke down.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Just silently.

The kind of crying that came from a place too deep for sound.

Lorenzo wanted to destroy something.

Someone.

Anything.

But he didn't.

Because he remembered his promise.

No more revenge.

No more becoming a monster.

He sat beside Hunter.

And for the first time...

he didn't try to fix the pain.

He simply stayed.

She leaned against him.

Not because she forgot her grief.

Because she finally didn't have to carry it alone.

Weeks passed.

The Rossi mansion changed again.

But this time, everyone noticed.

There were toys in the living room.

Baby blankets on expensive furniture.

Laughter in hallways that once held only silence.

Lorenzo learned how to cook simple meals.

Badly.

Very badly.

Hunter laughed the first time she tasted his attempt at pasta.

"You nearly destroyed Italian food."

Lorenzo looked offended.

"I am Italian."

"Exactly."

For several seconds, he stared at her.

Then he laughed.

A real laugh.

The guards outside froze.

Because they had not heard that sound in years.

One evening, Lorenzo found Hunter sitting beside Leo.

She looked peaceful.

Something he had never seen before.

"You look happy."

She smiled.

"I am."

A pause.

"That scares me."

"Why?"

"Because happiness always feels temporary."

Lorenzo sat beside her.

"I used to think the same."

She looked at him.

"What changed?"

He looked at Leo.

"This."

A pause.

"And you."

Hunter looked away.

"Lorenzo..."

It was the first time she had said his name without fear.

He noticed.

She noticed that he noticed.

The moment became quiet.

Not uncomfortable.

Just full.

Full of everything they had not said.

Later that night, something happened that changed everything.

Leo woke up.

Hunter entered first.

But Lorenzo was already there.

He was holding his son.

Leo was calm.

Then the baby looked toward Hunter.

And reached for her.

As always.

But this time...

something was different.

A sound.

A word.

Small.

Unclear.

But enough.

"Mama."

Hunter froze.

Lorenzo stopped breathing.

Neither moved.

Because they both knew.

They had heard it.

Leo looked at Hunter again.

"Mama."

And Hunter broke.

She covered her mouth.

Tears falling.

Because Lily had taken away that word.

The world had taken it away.

But now...

after everything...

a little boy had given it back.

Lorenzo watched her cry.

Then he placed one hand on her shoulder.

Not claiming.

Not demanding.

Just reminding her.

She was not alone.

That night, Hunter finally understood something.

She had entered the Rossi mansion as a maid.

A woman with nothing.

A mother with an empty heart.

But somewhere along the way...

she had found a son.

A home.

And a man who was learning how to love without destroying everything around him.

A second chance.

Not a replacement for the family they lost.

A new family built from the pieces that remained.

But while the Rossi family began healing...

someone else was preparing the final move.

Because Adrian had found one last file.

One last secret.

A secret even Sophia never discovered.

The truth about Leo's birth.

And the reason Hunter's body had been the only thing that could save him.

The next morning, Adrian sent one message to Lorenzo.

Only five words.

You need to know the truth.

And beneath it:

May you like

Leo was never an accident.
