CHAPTER 3

CHAPTER 3

The Mafia King and the Broken Mother

Lorenzo Rossi had spent his entire life learning how to read people.

A man who survived in his world did not trust words.

Words were cheap.

Enemies lied.

Partners betrayed.

Friends became weapons.

The truth was always hidden in the smallest details.

A nervous glance.

A shaking hand.

A hesitation before answering.

That was how Lorenzo built his empire.

That was how he stayed alive.

And yet, after three days of watching Hunter Higgins care for his son, he still could not understand her.

Because every rule he knew about people told him she should want something.

Everyone wanted something from Lorenzo Rossi.

Money.

Protection.

Power.

A favor.

A connection.

People approached him with smiles and left with expectations.

But Hunter?

Hunter asked for nothing.

She slept four hours a night.

She ate whatever the kitchen staff left behind.

She wore the same three uniforms because she refused to request anything new.

And every morning, the first thing she did was walk into Leo's nursery and check whether he was breathing.

Before coffee.

Before food.

Before thinking about herself.

Lorenzo noticed.

He hated that he noticed.

"You're doing it wrong."

Hunter froze.

She turned around slowly.

Lorenzo stood in the nursery doorway.

Dark suit.

Cold expression.

The same man who made grown criminals disappear with a phone call.

The same man who could silence a room without raising his voice.

But right now, he was holding a bottle of baby lotion.

Hunter blinked.

"What?"

Lorenzo looked down at Leo.

"You are supporting his neck incorrectly."

Hunter stared at him.

Then looked at Leo.

Then back at Lorenzo.

"You came in here to tell me how to hold a baby?"

"I came in here because you are putting too much pressure on his shoulder."

Hunter almost laughed.

Almost.

But she caught herself.

"Mr. Rossi."

"What?"

"Have you ever actually held your son?"

The question hit harder than she intended.

Lorenzo went still.

Hunter immediately realized she had crossed a line.

But she did not apologize.

Not because she was brave.

Because she was tired.

Tired of watching a father stand outside his child's life like a stranger.

"That's not your concern."

His voice became colder.

Hunter adjusted Leo in her arms.

"Maybe it should be."

The room changed.

The guards outside shifted.

Everyone knew Hunter had just done something dangerous.

She had challenged Lorenzo Rossi.

And survived.

Lorenzo stepped closer.

"You forget who you are speaking to."

"No."

Hunter looked at him.

"I remember exactly."

A pause.

"That's why I'm saying it."

His eyes narrowed.

"You think because you helped my son, you can lecture me?"

"No."

She looked down at Leo.

"I think because I helped your son, you should listen."

Silence.

For a moment, Lorenzo saw something he hadn't seen in years.

Not fear.

Not respect.

Honesty.

A dangerous thing.

Especially from someone who had nothing to lose.

Later that afternoon, Lorenzo found Hunter in the garden.

The Rossi estate had acres of land overlooking the ocean.

Beautiful.

Expensive.

Empty.

That was how Lorenzo always described it.

A beautiful place where nobody was truly happy.

Hunter sat on a stone bench.

She was holding a small photograph.

Lorenzo stopped when he saw it.

He should have walked away.

Privacy was something even he understood.

But then he heard her whisper.

"I'm sorry, Lily."

The name stopped him.

Hunter quickly wiped her face.

She did not know he was there.

"Mommy is trying."

Her voice cracked.

"I really am."

Lorenzo stood frozen.

He had heard people cry before.

He had caused people to cry.

But this was different.

This was not fear.

This was love with nowhere to go.

A strange feeling moved through him.

Something uncomfortable.

Something he did not want.

Sympathy.

"Hunter."

She turned.

Immediately, she stood.

"Mr. Rossi."

Her hand closed around the photograph.

"How long have you been there?"

"Long enough."

Her face tightened.

"I should get back to Leo."

She started walking.

"Wait."

She stopped.

Lorenzo looked at the photograph.

"Show me."

Hunter hesitated.

Then slowly handed it to him.

It was a picture of a baby girl.

Tiny.

Pink blanket.

Closed eyes.

A peaceful expression.

Lorenzo stared.

For some reason, he imagined Leo that small.

He imagined Sophia holding their child.

He imagined a life that never happened.

"What was her name?"

"Lily."

The answer was immediate.

Like she had practiced saying it every day.

"She was beautiful."

Hunter looked away.

"Everyone says that."

"But you believe it."

Her eyes lifted.

For a second, Lorenzo saw the woman behind the pain.

A mother.

Not a maid.

Not a stranger.

A mother.

"Yes."

She whispered.

"Because she was."

That evening, Lorenzo sat alone in his office.

A glass of untouched whiskey sat on his desk.

Beside it was a file.

Hunter Higgins.

He had read it ten times.

Every detail.

Every address.

Every job.

Every medical record.

Nothing.

No hidden connections.

No suspicious activity.

No reason.

And that bothered him more than if he had found something.

Because Lorenzo Rossi understood enemies.

He understood threats.

He did not understand kindness.

His phone rang.

Marcus.

"Speak."

The security chief hesitated.

"We found something."

Lorenzo straightened.

"What?"

"About Hunter."

A pause.

"You were right to investigate."

Lorenzo's expression hardened.

"What did you find?"

Marcus lowered his voice.

"The man who caused her accident."

Lorenzo stood.

"Who?"

"Thomas Vance."

The name meant nothing.

"Who is he?"

"Her former boyfriend."

A pause.

"He has a history."

Lorenzo listened.

"Violence."

Another pause.

"Debt."

Another.

"And connections to people you know."

The room went silent.

"Which people?"

Marcus answered.

"The Moretti family."

Lorenzo's grip tightened.

Impossible.

The Morettis.

The family he destroyed after Sophia's death.

The family he blamed for the bombing.

The family he believed was responsible.

"Hunter has no idea?"

"No."

Lorenzo looked toward the nursery camera.

Hunter was sitting beside Leo.

Reading a book softly.

A woman who had unknowingly walked into the center of his war.

"Keep investigating."

"Yes, boss."

"And Marcus?"

"Sir?"

"Do not let anyone touch her."

A pause.

Marcus understood.

"Understood."

The next morning, Leo laughed.

It was the first time.

A tiny sound.

Barely more than a breath.

But it was real.

Hunter froze.

Then tears filled her eyes.

"Oh my God..."

She touched his tiny hand.

"You laughed."

Lorenzo was standing at the doorway.

He heard it.

That sound.

A sound he thought he would never hear.

His son.

Laughing.

For the first time.

Hunter looked at him.

"Did you hear?"

Lorenzo didn't answer.

Because he couldn't.

His throat felt tight.

A feeling he had buried since the night Sophia died rose unexpectedly.

Love.

Pure.

Terrifying.

He walked closer.

Slowly.

Like approaching something fragile.

Hunter watched as he reached toward Leo.

For a moment, she thought he would stop.

But he didn't.

Lorenzo touched his son's hand.

And Leo wrapped his tiny fingers around his father's finger.

The mafia king froze.

Because for years, men had feared his hands.

Those hands had signed orders.

Made deals.

Ended wars.

But now...

One tiny hand had turned them powerless.

Hunter watched silently.

And for the first time, she saw Lorenzo Rossi not as a dangerous man.

Not as a mafia boss.

But as a father.

A broken father.

Just like her.

Two people who had lost everything.

Standing beside the one life they still had left.

Neither of them knew it yet.

But that moment was the beginning of something neither could escape.

May you like

Because sometimes...

the person who saves your child is the person who saves you too.
