CHAPTER 14

CHAPTER 14

The Man Beyond the Mafia

For three days, Lorenzo Rossi did not sleep.

Not because he was afraid of death.

Death had followed him for years.

He had looked into the eyes of men who wanted him gone.

He had walked into rooms where everyone wanted him buried.

He had survived wars that destroyed entire families.

But nothing had prepared him for a photograph of a baby girl.

A baby girl who was supposed to be gone.

A baby girl who belonged to the woman he loved.

A baby girl whose death had broken Hunter in a way even she could not explain.

Lorenzo had learned that there were wounds bullets couldn't create.

And now someone had opened one.

The photograph sat on the table.

Protected inside a plastic folder.

Like evidence.

Like a crime scene.

But to Hunter...

it was something else.

It was Lily.

Her daughter.

Her little girl.

The child she had held for twenty-seven minutes before the world took her away.

The child whose tiny clothes were still folded inside a drawer.

The child whose name she whispered when nobody was listening.

Hunter sat beside the table, staring.

"I remember her."

Lorenzo stood nearby.

"You were only with her for a short time."

Hunter shook her head.

"That was enough."

Her fingers touched the edge of the photograph.

"I knew everything about her."

A pause.

"I knew her heartbeat."

Her voice cracked.

"I knew how she moved."

Lorenzo said nothing.

Because there were some kinds of pain words could not touch.

"I knew she was mine."

The investigation began with one question.

How could Lily be alive?

The hospital records said she was stillborn.

The funeral records existed.

The medical reports existed.

Everything pointed to one conclusion.

Except the photograph.

And Lorenzo Rossi had learned one thing.

Records could lie.

People could lie.

Entire systems could lie.

But a mother's instinct rarely did.

Marcus returned with the first answer.

"Dr. Halloran disappeared."

Lorenzo looked up.

"When?"

"Three years ago."

The same time.

Again.

Every secret led back three years.

"Where?"

"We don't know."

Lorenzo's expression hardened.

"But we found something."

Marcus placed a file on the desk.

"A private research facility."

Lorenzo opened it.

The name made his eyes narrow.

The Belladonna Foundation.

Hunter looked confused.

"What is that?"

Lorenzo stared at the documents.

"I don't know."

And that scared him.

Because Lorenzo Rossi knew almost everything connected to his empire.

If something existed outside his knowledge...

it was dangerous.

The Belladonna Foundation was not a criminal organization.

That made it more frightening.

Criminals could be understood.

They wanted money.

Power.

Revenge.

But the people behind Belladonna believed something else.

They believed humanity could be improved.

Controlled.

Designed.

And the Rossi family had been one of their oldest investors.

Hunter read the documents.

Her face became pale.

"Children."

Lorenzo looked at her.

"What?"

She pointed at the files.

"They studied children."

Silence.

"Their genetics."

A pause.

"Their development."

Another.

"Their survival rates."

Lorenzo felt something cold move through him.

"Leo."

Hunter looked at him.

"And Lily."

Dr. Julian Halloran was found two days later.

Not hiding.

Waiting.

He sat alone in an abandoned clinic.

No guards.

No weapons.

Just a tired old man who looked like he had spent years running from himself.

When Lorenzo entered, Halloran didn't appear surprised.

"I knew you would come."

Lorenzo pointed the gun.

"Where is Lily?"

Halloran closed his eyes.

"Alive."

Hunter made a broken sound.

A mixture of disbelief and pain.

"Where?"

Halloran looked at her.

"I'm sorry."

She stepped forward.

"Don't."

Her voice trembled.

"Don't apologize."

A pause.

"Tell me where my daughter is."

Halloran looked down.

"I saved her."

The room went silent.

"You saved her?"

Hunter's face changed.

"Then why did you let me believe she was dead?"

Halloran couldn't answer.

Not immediately.

Because the truth was ugly.

"Lily was born during chaos."

Halloran spoke slowly.

"The night she was delivered, someone inside the hospital tried to access your records."

Hunter listened.

"I realized the same people targeting Leo were also looking for you."

"Why?"

"Because you were the missing piece."

Lorenzo stepped forward.

"Explain."

Halloran looked at him.

"Leo's condition."

A pause.

"The research."

Another.

"Your family."

He looked at Hunter.

"They discovered your pregnancy was connected to their project."

Hunter's face changed.

"My pregnancy?"

"Yes."

Halloran nodded.

"You were never chosen randomly."

Silence.

"You were selected."

The words destroyed something inside Hunter.

Selected.

A word that made her daughter feel less like a miracle.

More like an experiment.

"No."

Her voice was barely audible.

"Lily was not an experiment."

Halloran looked at her.

"No."

He shook his head.

"She wasn't."

A pause.

"That is why I saved her."

Hunter stared.

"Because she was human."

Halloran nodded.

"And because I realized what they were becoming."

Halloran revealed the truth.

When Lily was born, she had survived.

But someone wanted her removed.

A child connected to the Rossi research program was considered valuable.

Not a person.

An asset.

Halloran refused.

So he created a false death certificate.

He moved Lily somewhere safe.

And disappeared.

Hunter covered her mouth.

All these years...

Lily had been alive.

And she had never known.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

The question came from Lorenzo.

Not angry.

Broken.

Halloran looked at him.

"Because you were not the man you are now."

The words struck harder than any insult.

"You were consumed by revenge."

A pause.

"You would have destroyed everything."

Lorenzo didn't argue.

Because he knew.

The old Lorenzo would have.

He would have burned cities looking for his daughter.

And in doing so, he might have destroyed her safety.

The location was revealed.

A small coastal town.

A foster family.

A child named Lily.

Hunter could barely breathe.

"She knows my name?"

Halloran nodded.

"She has a picture of you."

The answer broke her.

"She knows me?"

"She knows someone loves her."

Lorenzo drove.

Not his driver.

Not his guards.

Himself.

Hunter sat beside him.

For hours, neither spoke.

Finally, she whispered:

"What if she doesn't want me?"

Lorenzo looked at her.

The old Lorenzo would have promised.

Guaranteed.

Controlled.

But the new Lorenzo answered honestly.

"Then you love her anyway."

Hunter looked at him.

"You think so?"

"I know."

A pause.

"Because that's what you did for Leo."

The house was small.

Simple.

Nothing like the Rossi mansion.

No marble.

No guards.

No secrets.

Just a home.

A woman opened the door.

And behind her...

stood a little girl.

Five years old.

Dark hair.

Bright eyes.

A small pink sweater.

Hunter stopped breathing.

Because she knew.

A mother always knew.

"Lily?"

The little girl stared.

Then looked at the photograph in Hunter's hand.

The one of a newborn baby.

The one she had carried for years.

The girl's eyes filled with confusion.

"Are you..."

Her voice was small.

"Are you my mommy?"

Hunter collapsed.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

All the pain.

All the grief.

All the years of believing she had lost her child.

Gone in one sentence.

"Yes."

Her voice broke.

"Yes, baby."

Lily stepped forward.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Like she was approaching a dream.

Then she hugged Hunter.

And Hunter finally cried the tears she had been unable to cry for three years.

Lorenzo watched from a distance.

He didn't interrupt.

This moment belonged to them.

But something inside him changed.

Because he had spent his entire life believing family was something you protected with power.

Now he understood.

Family was something you protected with love.

That night, Lorenzo made another promise.

Not to the Rossi empire.

Not to his enemies.

Not to his name.

To Hunter.

To Leo.

To Lily.

He promised they would never again be treated as pieces in someone else's game.

Never again.

But before they could return home...

a message arrived.

From an unknown number.

One photograph.

A photograph of Lorenzo's father.

Standing beside the founders of the Belladonna Foundation.

And below it:

THE FIRST ROSSI SECRET WAS NEVER ABOUT THE CHILDREN.

A second message followed.

IT WAS ABOUT LORENZO.

He stared at the screen.

Because after everything...

the final truth remained.

The Rossi family had not created a monster.

They had created a survivor.

May you like

And someone was about to reveal why.

TO BE CONTINUED...
